Abstract:Carex qingliangensis D. M. Weng, H. W. Zhang & S. F. Xu, a new species of the Cyperaceae from Zhejiang, China, is described with illustrations. The new species is morphologically similar to C. dolichostachya Hayata and C. tianmushanica C. Z. Zheng & X. F. Jin, but differs from the former in having perigynia sparsely pubescent and achenes constricted into a short neck at apex. It differs from the latter in having achenes not contracted in the middle part.

Abstract:Elsholtzia zhongyangii (Lamiaceae), a new species from Sichuan Province, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to E. feddei f. feddei, but it can be easily distinguished from E. feddei f. feddei by smaller corolla (3.2–3.5 mm vs. 4.5–5.3 mm), bract indumentum (glabrous, except margin ciliate vs. villous, especially on veins abaxially, glabrous adaxially) and bract stalked (ca. 1.2 mm vs. sessile). Phylogenetic analyses, based on two nuclear ribosomal (ETS, ITS) and five plastid (rbcL, matK, trnL-F, ycf1, ycf1-rps15) regions, confirmed that the new species formed a monophyletic clade with robust support. The new species is currently known from western Sichuan.

Abstract:Aspidistra luofushanensis, a new species of Asparagaceae from northeast Guangdong, China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically it is similar to A. punctata but can be distinguished by the suberect or slightly inward bending perianth lobes, pollen sacs facing upwards, umbrella-like pistil, upper surface white to light purplish red of sigma with margin lobes revolute. The morphology, pollen morphology and color plates are provided for comparison.

Abstract:A new species, Smilax weniae (Smilacaceae), from Southwest China, is described and illustrated. The new species bears peltate leaves, which was previously a unique feature of S. luei. However, it differs from the latter by having a broad ovate leaf blade, longer peduncle, and sexual dimorphic flowers. Further phylogenetic analyses revealed that the new species were placed in a unique position in a subclade of Old World Smilax based on ptDNA and nrITS sequences. Combining detailed morphological comparisons and molecular evidence, we validated that S. weniae is an undescribed new species. Moreover, the plastome characteristics of S. weniae are reported.

Abstract:In this paper, a new species from Central China, Amana hejiaqingii (Liliaceae), is described and illustrated. It resembles A. anhuiensis and A. tianmuensis but differs from A. anhuiensis as it has one white vein on its lower leaf and yellow anthers. It also differs from A. tianmuensis by possessing solitary pink flowers with longer and wider tepals. The principal coordinates analysis separated the three species based on morphological data. Cytological observation showed that A. hejiaqingii is diploid (2n = 2x = 24). Molecular phylogenetic analyses further supported its species delimitation.

Abstract:Aster yaoshanensis sp. nov., a new species of the family Asteraceae is here described and illustrated. The species is presently known only from rock crevices of mountain valleys in Dayaoshan National Nature Reserve, Guangxi autonomous region, China. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS sequences and complete plastome data have shown that this new species is a member of genus Aster with high support. Morphologically, it mostly resembles A. jishouensis, but it can be easily distinguished from the latter by bract indumentum (glabrous except margin ciliate vs. villous especially on veins abaxially, glabrous adaxially) and color (green vs. purple), shorter corolla (3.2-3.5 mm vs. 4.5-5.3 mm), bract stalk (obvious, ca.1.2 mm vs. sessile), and different distribution (Guangxi vs. Hunan). The detailed description, distribution map, and photos are provided. This study further elucidates the species identification, phylogeny and characteristic evolution of Aster.

Abstract:Sinalliaria is described here as a new genus of the family Brassicaceae from eastern China, based on the morphological characters and molecular sequences. Sinalliaria differs from the related genus Orychophragmus in having basal leaves petiolate, simple or rarely with 1‒3 lateral lobes (not pinnatisect); cauline leaves petiolate, cordate at base (not sessile, auriculate or amplexicaul at base); petals obovate to narrowly obovate, claw inconspicuous (not broadly obovate, with a claw as along as sepal); siliques truncate (not long-beaked) at apex. The microscopic characters of seed testa also show significant differences between Sinalliaria and Orychophragmus . Phylogenetic evidence from DNA sequences of nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid region trn L -trn F indicates that Sinalliaria is a distinct group related to Orychophragmus and Raphanus , but these three genera do not form a clade. The new genus Sinalliaria is endemic to eastern China and has only one species and one variety. The new combinations, S. limprichtiana (Pax) X. F. Jin, Y. Y. Zhou & H. W. Zhang and S. limprichtiana var. grandifolia (Z. X. An) X. F. Jin, Y. Y. Zhou & H. W. Zhang are proposed here.

Abstract:Carex sinosupina, a new species from Gansu, China is described and illustrated. This species is similar to C. aridula and C. ivanoviae, but differs by having broader leaves, 2.0–3.5 mm wide, perigynia 3–5‐veined abaxially and achenes concave at the middle of one lateral surface. Based on a field survey and SEM (scanning electron microscope) observation of the micromorphology of perigynia and achenes, the morphology and micromorphology of the new species, C. aridula and C. ivanoviae is compared.

Abstract:Cerastium qingliangfengicum H.W. Zhang & X.F. Jin sp. nova (Caryophyllaceae) is described. The new species was found in moist places in the valleys of Mt. Qingliangfeng in western Zhejiang of China. It is morphologically similar to C. wilsonii, hut differs by having sparsely to densely pubescent stems, leaves densely pubescent on both surfaces, petal lobes obtuse at apex, and capsules more than twice as long as sepals.

Abstract:A new species Tongoloa arguta (Apiaceae) is described and illustrated in this article. The new species grows in alpine bushes and meadows in south-western China. It resembles T. silaifolia, but differs from the latter by the length of the stem, ultimate segments of leaf and rays of the umbel. Phylogenetic analysis, based on nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, is provided, as well as comparative morphology between related species.

Abstract:Stictidaceae is characterised by a wide geographic distribution and diverse ecological roles. It has recently been the focus of taxonomic research in China. In this study, we describe two new asexual Stictidaceae species that we presume to be saprobes: Glomerobolus poacearum and Ostropomyces yunnanensis . The specimens were collected from decaying stems of unidentified herbaceous and Poaceae hosts in the Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve, China. Our approach combines morphological and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis, utilising LSU, ITS, mtSSU and rpb 2 markers. Glomerobolus poacearum sp. nov., was collected on decayed aquatic grass stems. In our phylogeny, it forms a well-supported clade with G . gelineus, the type of the genus. The species differs from G . gelineus in having comparatively smaller hyphoma, lobes and ballistic propagules that are spherical or fan-shaped when swollen. The discovery of Glomerobolus poacearum on Poaceae species within China are new observations of plant associates and geographical distribution in the genus. Ostropomyces yunnanensis sp. nov., was collected on a stem of a herbaceous plant. In our phylogenetic analysis, it forms a well-supported clade with G . gelineus , the type species of the genus and is characterised by the production of conidiomata with forcible discharge. Ostropomyces yunnanensis is distinguishable from the asexual morph of O . pruinosellus by possessing larger pycnidial conidiomata, which feature multiple locules of conical or irregular shapes and by having larger conidia that are 0–4-septate. These taxonomic contributions enrich our understanding of the diversity, evolutionary relationships and ecological interactions within Stictidaceae .

It can be distinguished by leaves situated in a basal rosette or aggregated at the lower part of the short stem, leaf blade narrowly elliptic or lanceolate, thick papyraceous, and capitulum bearing only one flower. The new species is morphologically similar to A. trinervis and molecularly sister to A. fragrans, both distributed nearby.

Abstract:This study describes two new species of Plagiostriata: P. xiapuensis sp. nov. and P. pingtanensis sp. nov., both collected in the intertidal zone of Fujian Province, China. This is the first record of species in the genus Plagiostriata in China. The morphological characteristics of the two new species are discussed in detail using light and scanning electron microscopy. Plagiostriata xiapuensis sp. nov. is characterized by its lower stria density and simple volae-covered areolae compared to the higher stria density, small and complex volae–covered areolae in P. pingtanensis sp. nov. The morphological characteristics of these two species significantly differ from those of P. goreensis and P. baltica in sternum and areolae features, which is also discussed herein.

Abstract:Stipa baicalensis Roshev., S.grandis P. Smirn, and S.krylovii Roshev are constructive species of the Inner Mongolia steppes. They are not only the main resources of forage in Inner Mongolia, but also the natural ecological defense of the Beijing-Tianjin area, boasting very important economical and environmental values. Studies on these Stipa species have been reported both in the domestic and overseas journals, focusing mainly on the grasses geographical distribution, and their biological and physiological characteristics. With the development of molecular biology techniques, studies on the molecular biology of Stipa species have drawn the attention of many researchers. Though analysis of the genetic similarities and genetic structure of one species of Stipa have been documented, research work on the genetic relationship between different Stipa species are still lacking. In the present study, 14 populations of three Stipa species from the middle and eastern Inner Mongolia steppes were analyzed with RAPD markers. We obtained 223 bands from the 16 primers, in which 184 bands were polymorphic. The rate of polymorphism was 82.51%. There were 14 samples to show the obvious similarity among the species, and populations within the same species were initially clustered together. We obtained the special RAPD markers within the populations of the same species.

Chenopodiopsis and is most similar to L. chenopodioides and L. remotiflora , but is distinguished from L. chenopodioides by narrower lanceolate leaf blade and longer pedicel, and longer stamens and styles, and from L. remotiflora by narrower leaf blade and longer stamens.

Abstract:The species delimitation of Triplostegia has been controversy and traditionally includes two species: T. glandulifera and T. grandiflora. These two taxa differs in some morphological characters on leaves, size of corollas, and achene involucel apex. A recent study proposed to merge these two species into a single taxon, T. glandulifera, while the phylogenetic and morphological evidence suggests that this genus consists of three distinct species, including an undescribed species that is distributed in the Hengduan Mountains Region and east Himalaya. Following the phylogenetic and morphological thesis, the authors describe and illustrate this new species: Triplostegia alpina. This taxon is characterized by a brown main taproot with fine roots and one to three more slender white glabrous lateral taproots, petiolate and serrated leaves, corollas 1.1–2.2 mm, achene involucel apex in purple and slightly hooked, which are distinctive from its two congeners. The study highlight the diagnostic role of taproot, leaf, corolla, and achene involucel in delimiting Triplostegia species.

Abstract:The phylogenetic studies of the tribe Alsineae ( Caryophyllaceae ) have revealed a clearer boundary between the genus Stellaria and related genera, primarily relying on the morphological characteristics of style 3, stamens 10 and petals deeply bifid. However, the newly-published species in China, which have 5 styles or ten or more lobes per petal, challenge this boundary and necessitate further studies. In this paper, we reviewed six newly-published Chinese species of Stellaria , utilising both molecular phylogenetic evidence from nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer ( ITS ) and four plastid regions ( trnL-F , matK , rbcL , rps16 ) and morphological evidence. Our results demonstrated that the five new species ( Stellaria abaensis , S. multipartita , S. pentastyla , S. procumbens and S. zhuxiensis ) were nested within the genus Stellaria , but Stellaria motuoensis was sister to the genus Schizotechium . Herein, we accepted four new Stellaria species and proposed a new combination in Schizotechium and a new synonym in Stellaria . Additionally, we described a new species Stellaria longipedicellata from Sichuan Province, China, which was distinguished from the closely-related species Stellaria decumbens by its glabrous body, linear-lanceolate leaves, long pedicellate flowers, prostrate growth habit and flowers nearly equal to or slightly shorter than sepals. Both molecular and morphological evidence support the treatment of S. longipedicellata as a new species of the genus Stellaria .

Abstract:Stipa is a genus comprising ca. 150 species found in warm temperate regions of the Old World and around 30% of its representatives are of hybrid origin. In this study, using integrative taxonomy approach, we tested the hypothesis that hybridization and introgression are the explanations of the morphological intermediacy in species belonging to Stipa sect. Smirnovia , one of the species-rich sections in the mountains of Central Asia. Two novel nothospecies, S . magnifica × S . caucasica subsp. nikolai and S . lingua × S . caucasica subsp. nikolai , were identified based on a combination of morphological characters and SNPs markers. SNPs marker revealed that all S . lingua × S . caucasica samples were F1 hybrids, whereas most of S . magnifica × S . caucasica samples were backcross hybrids. Furthermore, the above mentioned hybrids exhibit transgressive morphological characters to each of their parental species. These findings have implications for understanding the process of hybridization in the genus Stipa , particularly in the sect. Smirnovia . As a taxonomic conclusion, we describe the two new nothospecies S . × muksuensis (from Tajikistan) and S . × ochyrae (from Kyrgyzstan) and present an identification key to species morphologically similar to the taxa mentioned above.
