Abstract:This study examined gender differences in student engagement and academic performance in school. Participants included 3420 students (7th, 8th, and 9th graders) from Austria, Canada, China, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Malta, Portugal, Romania, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The results indicated that, compared to boys, girls reported higher levels of engagement in school and were rated higher by their teachers in academic performance. Student engagement accounted for gender differences in academic performance, but gender did not moderate the associations among student engagement, academic performance, or contextual supports. Analysis of multiple-group structural equation modeling revealed that perceptions of teacher support and parent support, but not peer support, were related indirectly to academic performance through student engagement. This partial mediation model was invariant across gender. The findings from this study enhance the understanding about the contextual and personal factors associated with girls' and boys' academic performance around the world.
What drives academic peer effects in middle school classrooms in China: Peer composition or peer performance?

Abstract:This quasi-experimental study estimates academic peer effects in China's middle school (7th–9th grade) classrooms, using data from a large-scale nationally representative survey of middle schoolers in China. Our study design circumvents endogenous sorting by focusing on 52 schools that randomly assigned incoming 7th graders to different 7th-grade classes. Further, reverse causality is addressed by regressing students' 8th-grade test scores on their (randomly assigned) classmates' average 7th-grade test scores. Our analysis reals that all else equal, a one-standard-deviation increase in (8th-grade) classmates' average 7th-grade test scores raises an individual student's 8th-grade mathematics and English test scores, respectively, by 0.13–0.18 and 0.11–0.17 standard deviations. These estimates remain stable when peer characteristics examined in related peer-effect studies are included in the model. Further analysis reveals that peer effects work through raising individual students' time spent studying per week and their confidence in learning. Finally, classroom peer effects are found to be heterogeneous across subgroups: larger for boys, academically stronger students, students attending better schools (i.e., schools with smaller classes and urban schools), and students with relatively disadvantaged family backgrounds (e.g., lower levels of parental education and family wealth).

Abstract:Peer is an important factor affecting the academic performance of middle school students. Domestic research has discussed this issue, but there are still some shortcomings in solving endogeneity aspects. Therefore, this study used the random effect of natural changes in pubertal development and maturity of middle school students in two years adjacent to the same class to identify peer effects due to changes in pubertal development and maturity; at the same time, first-order difference and quantile regression are used to solve the endogeneity problems in general regression analysis. We found that girls’ developmental maturity is significantly negatively related to their performance, and boys’ developmental maturity is significantly positively related to their performance, which indicates that there is a gender difference in the impact of adolescent developmental maturity on academic performance of middle school students. In addition, the peer effect is also heterogeneous, that is, in overall, the lower the development maturity of girls in a class, the more conducive to the improvement of student performance; the higher the maturity of students in class, the more conducive to the improvement of student performance. The findings of this study have certain policy implications for adjusting the school age of school-age children.

Abstract:This paper examines the role of teacher gender in education production. We extend student outcomes from traditionally focused academic achievement to noncognitive outcomes. Using a representative survey of middle school students in China, we focus on schools where student-teacher assignments are random. Our results show that having a female teacher raises girls' test scores and improves their mental status and social acclimation relative to those of boys. There is evidence that female teachers provide feedback differently to girls and boys and that having a female teacher alters girls' beliefs about commonly held gender stereotypes and increases their motivation to learn.

Abstract:This paper estimates peer effects on student achievement using a panel data set from a middle school in China. Unique features of the organization of Chinese middle schools (Grades 7 to 9) and panel data allow us to overcome difficulties that have hindered the separation of peer effects from omitted individual factors due to self-selection and from common teacher effects and to identify peer effects at the classroom level. We estimate peer effects for Math, English, and Chinese test scores separately. In a linear-in-means model controlling for both individual and teacher-by-test fixed effects, peers are found to have a positive and significant effect on math test scores, a positive but insignificant effect on Chinese test scores, but no effect on English test scores. Importantly, in Math and Chinese students at the middle of the ability distribution tend to benefit from better peers, whereas students at the ends of the ability distribution do not, suggesting that policy makers who want to exploit positive peer effects face difficult tradeoffs in classroom and school assignment.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of having more female classmates on students’ physical health outcomes. To do so, we draw on panel data from the first two waves of the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) and take advantage of exogenous variation in classroom gender composition brought by the random assignment of students to classes when they entered junior high school. Results from the value-added model show that having more female classmates helps to improve the physical health outcomes of junior high school students in China. Specifically, a one-percentage-point (pp) increase in the proportion of female classmates in Grade 7 explains a 0.003-0.004 pp increase in one's probability of staying normal BmiAZ or going from abnormal to normal BmiAZ, a 0.029-0.031 increase in the BmiAZ score of those with low starting BmiAZ, a 0.003 increase in one's HAZ score, and a 0.157-0.165% or 0.166-0.177% decrease in the diopter of one's left or right lens of glasses from Grade 7 to Grade 8, respectively. One possible mechanism underlying these relationships is that more female classmates bring healthier behaviors. Heterogeneity analyses indicate that the beneficial effects of having more female classmates on health outcomes are more prominent among boys, students with less-educated parents, and those attending rural schools or schools with bigger class sizes.
In What Environment Can Female College Students Excel? an Analysis of Gender Differences in Learning of Chinese College Students

Abstract:With the expansion of higher education in China, gender equity has been largely improved at the entrance to undergraduate education. Yet, whether male and female students developed equally during college is still under debate. Using data from a Chinese national college student survey in 2021, this study explores gender differences in learning behaviors and outcomes of college students and examines whether they are influenced differently by educational environmental factors. Employing multiple regression models, we find that though female students outperformed males on active learning behaviors and academic scores, they were less active in higher-order learning behaviors, resource-intensive high-impact educational practice, and student-faculty interactions and reported lower educational gains than their male counterparts. Environmental and educational factors, including institute type, gender composition, academic challenges, and student support, influence the gender gaps in different ways. Overall, most female college students behave under the gender expectations of society and are less responsive to educational factors than their male counterparts. Collectively, these findings underscore the need for heightened awareness of gender gaps in the learning process in different learning environments and advocate for a more tailored collegiate environment that optimally supports female students’ educational pursuits.

Abstract:This paper provides evidence of a new peer effect structure by showing that middle-achieving peers influence academic achievement. By exploiting the random assignment of students to classes within middle schools, we find that students perform better in the presence of hardworking middle-achieving peers. We examine the role of a better classroom environment, motivated learning attitudes, and responsible teachers as key mechanisms. Low-(vs. high-) achieving students are more strongly affected in terms of academic performance and learn-ing attitude by middle-achieving peers' positive spillovers. Therefore, teachers should give due consideration to middle-achieving students.

Abstract:Self-control is a non-cognitive ability that can predict academic performance, and students’ self-control can be influenced by their peers. In this study, we examine the effects of exposure to self-controlled peers on students’ academic performance. Using data from Chinese middle school students, we find that being in a class with self-controlled peers improves students’ test scores. The peer self-control works through both the shining light model and the bad apple model. We also find the asymmetric gender effect whereby self-controlled boy peers influence both genders, whereas self-controlled girl peers have no impact on either gender. The potential mechanism analysis reveals that peer self-control improves students’ scores primarily through supportive teaching attitudes and behaviors, a favorable class environment, and student behavior modification; we find limited influence of peer self-control in the classroom on students’ social network.

Abstract:College life is a crucial period for undergraduate students to build up their philosophy of the world and life, and is also important for their academic development. Besides interactions between teachers and students, interactions between students themselves are another kind of significant interaction that may influence student opinions and academic achievement. Different from the western residential college, China has been using class as the basic organizational unit of student campus life. The peer effect of classmates on student achievement is very significant. According to the empirical study, the magnitude and significance of classmate peer effect are much larger than those of roommates. In addition, comparing to male students, female students are more likely to be affected by their peers.

Abstract:Summary: The evaluation of the short-term and long-term of disruptive peer effects in the primary edu-cation stage has become a hot topic in labor economics. Based on the latest Chinese Education Panel Survey(CEPS)data in 2014,this paper empirically examines the impact of disruptive peers on the student test scores. When studying the peer effects,there are two key problems to solve,reflection and self-selection. The so-called "reflection" refers to the problem of mutual influences between peers. It is essentially a reverse causal-ity problem that is often encountered in the setting of econometric models,because it is difficult to tell wheth-er the disruptive students have an impact on other students or some students have a bad influence on the sur-rounding students,which leads to a biased and inconsistent estimator if researchers use the surrounding stu-dents' performance to explain other students'. Self-selection mainly refers to the fact that families don't choose schools and classes completely randomly. In order to overcome the estimation bias caused by the problem of reflection and self-selection,we define the class environment as the proportion of disruptive students in the class rather than the peer achievement used in the traditional literature, and we also control the cohort features. After controlling the individual and family factors,we find that students exposed to a disruptive environ-ment have a significant lower education performance. This effect is more significant for the third grade stu-dents in the junior high school. One percent increase of the disruptive peers will result in about 0.2 decreasing in the average standardized test score. The result also shows that the acadamic performance of male students, students with poor family conditions and boarding students is more sensitive to class peers. The heterogeneity analysis of school types shows that peer effects are more obvious in schools with poor education and in town-ship/rural schools. Furthermore,quantile regression results show that the negative effect of disruptive peers has a greater impact on poorly performing students. This paper is helpful to enrich the academic cognition of educational production function and provide a useful reference for future education policy. The underlying implication of our study is that if there are reason-able and feasible policies that can change students' class environment or a more reasonable class division plan,it will effectively improve the educational achievements of students. In addition,the attention to students' family environment should be strengthened,especially those students who perform poorly in school,and strengthening communication and psychological counseling will bring about significant spillovers.
Peer Effects in Competitive Environments: Field Experiments on Information Provision and Interventions

Abstract:Prior studies of social-norms interventions have focused on nudging behavior in non-competitive settings. This research evaluates such interventions in competitive environments, e.g., a class with a competitive grading policy. Field experiments on a learning management system show that providing descriptive information about peers’ behavior has mixed effects in reducing procrastination and improving performance outcomes. Specifically, the effects are moderated by individual characteristics and contextual variables. First, peer information interventions are more effective for males, and the effects are stronger in a male-majority environment than in a female-majority environment. These findings differ from prior studies of social-norms interventions conducted in non-competitive settings, in which females are found to be more responsive to interventions. Gender differences in our competitive settings can be explained by males and females’ differential preferences for competition: males are more competitive-oriented and thus are more responsive to peer information in competitive environments. Second, we find that individuals who are in great need of interventions, i.e., those with poor past behavior and performance, are also more likely to benefit from peer information interventions, suggesting that peer information interventions motivate positive change. This study highlights the heterogeneous effects of peer information interventions and has implications for targeted interventions.
Migrant Peers in the Classroom: is the Academic Performance of Local Students Negatively Affected?

Abstract:This paper provides the first causal estimates of the impact of internal migrant peers on the academic performance of local students in developing countries. By exploiting the random assignment of students to classes within a school, I find that migrant peers have large and negative effects on the academic performance of local students in China and the negative spillover effects are concentrated among male students and among local students in large cities. The investigation of the underlying mechanisms suggests that the negative migrant spillover effects may come from the worsened learning environment or from the adjustment of teachers' pedagogical practices in response to the migrant composition in the classroom.

Abstract:The ability and character of students's group can be seen as potential peer inputs which have influence on individual student's achievement.This study found:peer ability and father's education background in peer inputs' index had a significant influence on student achievement,peer effects had cumulative effect with time,peer ability measured by student achievement had different impact on students of different ability;any student benefited from peer group of homogeneity.This research results have reference value on teaching efficiency improvement and families' education choice: placement basing on homogeneity of student ability will help improve teaching effciency;families should consider children's current ablity selecting the very class for their children when they make education choices.
School Quality and Peer Effects: Explaining Differences in Academic Performance Between China’s Migrant and Rural Students

Abstract:In China, parents have a choice to either send their children to private migrant schools in urban areas or to keep them in their own county. It is unclear whether the academic differences of students in rural schools and those in private migrant schools is due to the quality of schools, the quality of students/peers, or the ways that peer effects interact with the quality of the school. Using survey data from students with rural residency who attended either migrant schools or rural public schools, we measure how differences in the quality of the types of schools and how the effect of peers differs in high- versus low-quality schools. An instrumental variable approach is used to identify the causality of a student's peers on his or her academic outcomes and within the context of each of the school venues. The gap in student academic performance is explained by the differences in each student's peers as and in how peers interact in the schooling environments. The analysis also demonstrates that there is a significant interaction effect between one's peers and the quality of a student's school environment. We found that school quality has a complementary effect with peers on student academic performance.
Unveiling the effects of other-gender friendships: evidence from middle-school students in China

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of having other-gender friends on middle-school students' cognitive and noncognitive performance in the context of China. To address the endogeneity of the existence of other-gender friends, we rely on parents' strictness with friends-making and the share of other-gender schoolmates. We find that having at least one other-gender friend is estimated to have a significantly negative effect on students' Mathematics scores and a significantly effect on increasing students' negative mood states. Our estimates indicate that the negative effect of other-gender friends is more pronounced for girls, highlighting the importance of paying attention to girls who build the other-gender friendships during the transition from childhood to adolescence. By focusing on both cognitive and noncognitive performance, we are able to paint a more accurate picture of the impact of other-gender friends on the development of adolescents.

Abstract:We estimate the effects of an educational peer intervention in which previously high- and low-achieving students are randomly paired as deskmates in elementary schools in China. Our treatment boosts the mathematics scores of the low-achieving students. Moreover, the treatment enhances the extraversion and agreeableness of high- and low-achieving students, thereby providing evidence that peers can influence personality traits. The positive treatment effects can be attributed to the deskmate-level peer effects. We document friend network structure changes and present additional evidence on how friendship ties help us better understand the mechanisms behind peer effects. (JEL I21, I26, J24, O15, P36, Z13)
Peers in puppy love and student academic performance in middle school: quasi-experimental evidence from China

Abstract:In the ongoing debate regarding the impact of puppy love on adolescents' personal development, the existing literature has paid insufficient attention to the externalities of students experiencing puppy love in classrooms. By using a nationally representative survey of middle school students in China, we employed random student-classroom assignment as a quasi-experiment to investigate the causal effect of classroom peers experiencing puppy love on students' academic performance. We found that classroom peers in puppy love had an adverse impact on students' academic performance, which is proven to be reliable by a series of robustness checks, including instrumental variable(IV)estimation, removing extreme observations, placebo tests, and adding other control variables. Mechanism analysis indicated that this negative peer effect was caused by students' lower learning effort, lower expectations for the future, further peer effect of student friends and teachers' lack of responsibility and patience. Furthermore, this negative effect was more pronounced among boys, students with high family income, and medium or low cognitive ability.

Abstract:This paper presents evidence of gender peer effects in high schools in India using new administrative data. Identification of gender peer effects is achieved by exploiting variation induced by idiosyncratic changes in gender composition across cohorts within schools, in addition to controlling for past scores. The proportion of female classmates in a student's cohort has a sizeable positive effect on the test scores of both male and female students. We find that peer effects vary non-linearly with the proportion of female students. Finally, we provide suggestive evidence on plausible mechanisms. We show that achievement spillovers are not the main driver of positive gender peer effects. Using a supplemental dataset, we show that a greater proportion of female students leads to an improved classroom environment in the context of Indian schools.

A Study on the Relationship Between Positive Psychological Quality and Academic Performance of College Students

Abstract:In sharp contrast to the relevant research on positive psychological quality and academic performance in basic education, there is almost no relevant research in higher education in China. In order to explore the relationship between positive psychological quality and their academic performances of college students, and furthermore, whether positive psychological quality can affect their performances through the influence of academic self-efficacy and learning engagement, we conducted survey research among medical students in southwest and northeast China. We found that there are differences in positive psychological quality, academic self-efficacy, academic engagement and academic performance among students of different genders and grades. Girls' academic performance and engagement are higher than boys. The positive psychological quality of higher grades is better than that of lower grades. Positive psychological quality can affect academic performance alone, and the effect is more obvious when it is combined with academic self-efficacy. The positive psychological quality and academic self-efficacy can effectively affect learning engagement, which also can affect academic performance. However, learning engagement and academic self-efficacy have no mediating effect on positive psychological quality and academic performance.
