The Relationship Between Autonomy And Independence Of China'S Non-Governmental Organization-Cases From Zhejiang Province

Abstract:The independence and autonomy of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in China have always been the core issues of academic concern. However, scholars did not make a distinction between the concepts precisely, and even, in most of papers, the autonomy and independence are used to express the same meaning. Judging from the recent studies, the concept of "dependent autonomy" explains the difference between the independence and autonomy of the non-governmental organizations, and indicated that they are separated. Furthermore, according to past empirical research and academic intuition, we believe that there is a special relationship between independence and autonomy. Hence, on the basis of a distinction between autonomy and independence, through reviewing the relevant literature, and multiple case studies, the article tries to assume that the autonomy-independence relation of non-governmental organizations shows two Modes in the context of China: If the NGO is relatively of low independence, there is a negative correlation between autonomy and independence while by contrast, if the NGO is relatively of high independence, there is a positively correlation between them.
