Treatment Strategy and Timing of Surgery in Congenital Cervical Scoliosis

Abstract:Torticollis is one of the most common orthopedic problems for infants and children. The majority of cases result from a contracture of the sternocleidomastoid muscle that responds well to stretching exercises. Although rare, the possibility of an underlying osseous abnormality should always remain on the list of differential diagnoses for these children. Congenital cervical scoliosis is an unusual spinal deformity often resulting from multiple vertebral anomalies and is most commonly found in children who present with torticollis. Although technically challenging, surgical correction may be required to prevent deformity progression and development of secondary craniofacial asymmetry, which may lead to more significant cosmetic concerns than the actual cervical curve. This study aims to assess a combined surgical approach for complex deformity correction in these patients.
