Abstract:This paper is aimed at presenting the experimental results of the adsorption features of phenol and pyridine on the activated bamboo charcoal(ABC)at the temperature of 35 ℃.Taking phenol as the typical compound from the phenolic group,pyridine as that from the nitrogen heterocyclic aromatic group,and the ABC with its diameter of 4-6 mm made out of phyllostachys pubescens in Zhejiang Province as the adsorbent,we have carefully observed and measured the competitive adsorption relation of the said compounds in our work.The results of our experimental research have shown that the adsorption of phenol is fit both for the Langmuir and the Freundlich model whereas that of pyridine is only fit for the Freundlich.The maximum adsorption capacities of phenol and pyridine are 122.0 mg/g and 344.8 mg/g respectively with each of the results tested and measured by the Langmuir model.Through the kinetics experiments,the adsorption both of the compounds prove to have reached their equilibrium in 4.0 h,with 70.4% and 72.7% for each of the final adsorption to take place during the first hour of the process.Furthermore,the two adsorption processes prove to conform to the pseudo-second order kinetic model.In addition,it has been found that when the two compounds co-exist in the same solution,the kinetic process,the moment for the two compounds to reach equilibration and the adsorption rate constants prove not to be affected by each other,but their adsorption capacities tend to get lower.By the end of the kinetic experiment(5.8 h),in the single solution systems,the adsorption capacity could be 67.0 mg/g for phenol with its initial concentration of 264.2 mg/L,and 91.0 mg/g for pyridine with its initial concentration of 433.7 mg/L;while in the bi-solution system with the same initial concentrations,the adsorption capacities can be expected to reach 60.0 mg/g and 72.1 mg/g for phenol and pyridine,respectively,and then began to drop down by 10.4% and 20.8% respectively.This implies that phenol may have greatly affected pyridine adsorption onto the ABC.
