Abstract:This paper develops a general formulation of dependent-chance goal programming (DCGP) which is an extension of stochastic goal programming in a complex stochastic system, and gives an example of water allocation and supply to show the application of DCGP. A genetic algorithm based approach is also presented to solve such a model. DCGP is available to the systems in which there are multiple stochastic inputs and multiple outputs with their own reliability levels. The characteristic of DCGP is that the chances of some probabilistic goals are dependent, i.e., the goals cannot be considered in isolation or converted to their deterministic equivalents. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation is also discussed for calculating the chance functions in complex stochastic constraints.

Abstract:The Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) has been proposed as an alternative to the mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) for applications in process synthesis. It is straightforward in conditional modelling. Besides, it can reduce the complexity of the NLP sub-problems. In this paper, a nested method combining heuristic algorithm and gradient-based optimizer is proposed to solve the GDPs. It is generally a two-layer method, where the heuristic algorithm such as Tabu Search (TS) or Genetic Algorithm (GA) performs master iterations in the outer loop dealing with the logical variables of GDPs, and a gradient-based NLP solver such as Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) is applied in the inner layer dealing with the sub-NLP problems. In each call by the outer-layer heuristic algorithm, a set of logic values is specified and passed to the inner-layer. The general GDP model can thus be transformed into a reduced NLP sub-problem by automatically eliminating a number of equations based on the logic disjunction, nonlinear ones in some cases. After the execution of the gradient-based NLP solver, the result of each NLP sub-problem is returned to the outer-layer for further iterations. The heuristic method is responsible to find the global optimum of logic variables. Good performance has been demonstrated by applying the combined method into process synthesis such as heat exchanger networks (HEN) and the integrated water systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes a modified genetic algorithm (GA) for optimization of water distribution systems. A method of dynamically expanding the pipe-choice-table selections and reducing the number of decision variables is introduced, which occurs during a GA run. On the basis of the progressive selection, an initially reduced choice table for each decision variable is allowed to dynamically expand, and then the number of decision variables is gradually reduced. This process enables the GA search to concentrate on promising regions of the search space. The dynamically expanding choice-table genetic algorithm (GA(DECT)) has been applied to a benchmark case study, the New York Tunnels Problem. The results obtained show that the GA(DECT) yields a superior performance in terms of solution quality and computational efficiency. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)WR.1943-5452.0000153. Abstract:Stochastic problems existing in many research domains could be solved through three kinds of methods viz. expected value model (EVM), chance-constrained programming (CCP), and dependent chance programming (DCP). However, these methods, sometimes, give different or even contrary results when dealing with the same real world problems. This paper proposes a new stochastic programming method, termed as balance programming between target and chance, based on the concept of effective decision frontier curve, which can solve the stochastic problems in a more rational, flexible, and applicable manner, and can diminish conflicts of the three above-mentioned methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by building optimal bidding strategies for generation companies with risk management in the electricity market environment. A genetic algorithm with Monte Carlo simulation is employed to solve the programming model.

Abstract:This paper presents a genetic algorithm for chance constrained programming (CCP), including chance constrained goal programming(CCGP), chance constrained multiobjective programming(CCMOP). In order to deal with stochastic constraints, Monte Carlo simulation is employed to check the feasibility of a solution in the proposed genetic algorithm. Finally, we use some numerical examples to illustrate the effectiveness of genetic algorithm for chance constrained programming.

Abstract:The generalized disjunctive programming (GDP) model has been proposed and applied in the past decade as an alternative to the mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model because it has the advantages of being straightforward when used in conditional modeling and being able to reduce the complexity in the sub-NLP. In this paper, we introduced an improved variant of the traditional GDP model, otherwise known as the object-oriented disjunctive programming (ODP) model. Such a method helps generate well-posed sub-NLP, thereby improving the solving process. A nested method combining the heuristic algorithm and gradient-based optimizer is also proposed to solve the GDP and ODP. It is a two-layer method, wherein a heuristic algorithm performs master iterations in the outer-loop when dealing with the Boolean variables, and a gradient-based NLP solver is applied in the inner-loop when dealing with the sub-NLP. Excellent performance has been demonstrated by applying the modeling and solving methods into the process synthesis of heat exchanger networks (HENs) and water networks (WNs).

Abstract:A programming method,termed as balanced programming between target and chance,is developed.Based on the all-around information about the effective decision front curve(EDFC) of the problems concerned,this method can maximize the utility of a decision-making problem through weighing the quantity relationships and comparing the changing velocity along the EDFC between the target profit and the realization chance.The method can solve stochastic optimization problems in a more rational,flexible,and easy-to-use way,and avoid conflicts among the expected value model,chance-constrained programming and dependent chance programming.A numerical example shows the effectiveness and main features of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, a fuzzy quadratic minimum spanning tree problem is formulated as dependent-chance programming. The deterministic equivalent is discussed when the fuzzy direct costs and fuzzy interactive costs are all characterized by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm using Prufer number representation is designed for solving the fuzzy dependent-chance programming as well as its deterministic equivalents. Finally, a numerical example is provided for illustrating the effectiveness of the genetic algorithm.

Abstract:In goal programming problem, the general equilibrium and optimization are often two conflicting factors. This paper proposes a generalized varying-domain optimization method for fuzzy goal programming (FGP) incorporating multiple priorities. According to the three possible styles of the objective function, the varying-domain optimization method and its generalization are proposed. This method can generate the results consistent with the decision-maker (DM)’s expectation, that the goal with higher priority may have higher level of satisfaction. Using this new method, it is a simple process to balance between the equilibrium and optimization, and the result is the consequence of a synthetic decision between them. In contrast to the previous method, the proposed method can make that the higher priority achieving the higher satisfactory degree. To get the global solution of the nonlinear nonconvex programming problem resulting from the original problem and the varying-domain optimization method, the co-evolutionary genetic algorithms (GAs), called GENOCOPIII, is used instead of the SQP method. In this way the DM can get the optimum of the optimization problem. We demonstrate the power of this proposed method by illustrative examples.

Abstract:Land use planning seeks to outline the future location and type of development activity. The planning process should reconcile development with environmental conservation and other concerns pertaining to sustainability; hence multi-objective spatial optimization is considered an effective tool to serve this purpose. However, as the number of social, economic, and environmental objectives increases, especially when numerous spatial units exist, the curse of dimensionality becomes a serious problem, making previous methods unsuitable. In this paper, we formulate a probabilistic framework based on the gradient descent algorithm (GDA) to search for Pareto optimal solutions more effectively and efficiently. Under this framework, land use as decision parameter(s) in each cell is represented as a probability vector instead of an integer value. Thus, the objectives can be designed as differentiable functions such that the GDA can be used for multi-objective optimization. An initial experiment is conducted using simulation data to compare the GDA with the genetic algorithm, with the results showing that the GDA outperforms the genetic algorithm, especially for large-scale problems. Furthermore, the outcomes in a real-world case study of Shenzhen demonstrate that the proposed framework is capable of generating effective optimal scenarios more efficiently, rendering it a pragmatic tool for planning practices.

A Multi-objective Stochastic Programming Model for Emergency Logistics Based on Goal Programming

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of emergency location-allocation in multi-supplier, multi-affected area, multi-relief and multi-vehicle emergency logistics networks. A multi-objective stochastic programming model, which embeds the chance constraints and scenario planning, is proposed to handle the uncertainty of demand, supply and the availability of path. The optimization focuses on minimizing the expected travel time and the proportion of unmet demands, which represent efficiency and fairness respectively. There are also coverage limits for relief suppliers to cover affected areas. The goal programming approach is proposed to solve the multi-objective problem. In the end, computational results based on objective achievement scale indicate the validity of the model and solution.
Generalized Disjunctive Programming for Heat Exchanger Networks Synthesis

Abstract:By introducing the conditional modeling technique into the mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model of heat exchanger networks synthesis (HENS),a generalized disjunctive programming (GDP) model for HENS was proposed.The GDP model adopts a set of logical variables to accomplish the conditional selection of constraints.Compared with the original MINLP model for HENS,the GDP model is more straightforward in the modeling stage.Moreover,the dynamic selection of constraints greatly reduces the complexity in the NLP sub-problems.An automatic elimination of the cost-computation terms for non-existing units also facilitates the solving process.Together with the GDP modeling of HENS,a novel hybrid method,with Tabu Search (TS) in the outer-layer and gradient-based optimizer in the inner-lay,was proposed to solve this GDP model.A comparison with traditional MINLP models for HENS was also conducted via case studies,and the advantages in model's simplicity and computational efficiency of using GDP can be obviously observed.The results show that the proposed GDP with the hybrid solver is effective in dealing with HENS.

Abstract:<p>In the agricultural water resources system, the regional yield is hard to be simulated accurately under the impacts of spatial heterogeneities of soil, weather, and crop types. The optimal water allocation schemes may be not in accordance with actual conditions due to neglecting the actual crop growth process. Meanwhile, the uncertainties in the simulation-optimization models are not easy to be addressed. To deal with the above problems, this paper develops a framework of the distributed AquaCrop simulation nonlinear multi-objective dependent-chance programming (distributed AquaCrop NMOFDCP) for irrigation water resources management under uncertainties. This developed model is applied to a case study of irrigation water resources management in the middle reaches of the Heihe River Basin in China. The 134 homogeneous decision-making units (DMUs) are divided to depict the spatial heterogeneities of the study area, and 472 decision variables (irrigation amount) for 134 DMUs are optimized. Moreover, the model deals with uncertainties expressed as fuzzy goals and tradeoffs relationships between objectives of the yield and water productivity, and measures the satisfactory degrees between objectives and their fuzzy goals. Two groups of Pareto solutions corresponding to the maximum satisfactory degree of the yield, and the maximum satisfactory degree of the water productivity are obtained by the parallel genetic algorithm (PGA) method respectively. In addition, water allocation, satisfactory degree of the yield, and satisfactory degree of water productivity are analyzed at the decision-making unit scale, crop scale, and irrigation-district scale separately. Besides the effects of three weather conditions and four soil types on the system's outputs are conducted. The results show that weather conditions and soil types have obvious effects on the system's outputs at three analysis scales, and different water allocation patterns at the growth period affect the yield and water productivity.</p>

Abstract:Using equilibrium chance measures, this paper presents a new version of fuzzy random dependent-chance programming models. Also, a fuzzy random simulation approach is designed for computing equilibrium chance of a fuzzy random event. At the end of this paper, we suggest a hybrid intelligent algorithm, which integrates fuzzy random simulation, neural network and genetic algorithm for solving fuzzy random dependent-chance programming models.
