Abstract:AbstractThe ability to harness charges and spins for control of organic excitonic states is critical in developing high‐performance organic luminophores and optoelectronic devices. Here we report a facile strategy to efficiently manipulate the electronic energy states of various organic phosphors by coupling them with inorganic lanthanide nanocrystals. We show that the metallic atoms exposed on the nanocrystal surface can introduce strong coupling effects to 9‐(4‐ethoxy‐6‐phenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole (OCzT) and some organic chromophores with carbazole functional groups when the organics are approaching the nanocrystals. This unconventional organic–inorganic hybridization enables a nearly 100 % conversion of the singlet excitation to fast charge transfer luminescence that does not exist in pristine organics, which broadens the utility of organic phosphors in hybrid systems.

Abstract:This review focuses on the recent research progress in the multi-component assembly of luminescent rare earth hybrid materials, which is based on the luminescent rare earth compounds and two or more other building units, including the other photoactive species. It covers the multi-component luminescent rare earth hybrids which was assembled with different (a) organic-inorganic polymeric units, (b) nanoporous units, (c) nanoparticle composites or (d) other developing special units. Finally, future challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed. Herein it mainly focuses on the work of Yan's group in recent years.

Abstract:Herein we report a novel transparent organic-inorganic hybrid material exhibiting the emission characteristics of lanthanides by polymerization of liquid monomer MMA containing surface modified zeolite L, inside the channels of which luminescent lanthanide complexes are incorporated. The obtained materials were characterized with FT-IR, SEM and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emitting color of the transparent zeolite L-polymer materials can be tuned by simply changing the lanthanide complexes inside the channels of zeolite L. SEM images suggest that zeolite L particles are highly dispersed in the PMMA matrices, which ensures the transparency of the hybrid materials. Luminescence spectra reveal that the luminescence features of the lanthanide have been retained upon embedding into the polymer matrices. The polymer can protect the luminescence of the lanthanide complex inside zeolite L crystals from water quenching.

Abstract:The unique luminescent performance of lanthanide complexes/clay minerals hybrid materials has been fascinating many researchers for recent decades. It not only retains the excellent luminescent characteristics of lanthanide complexes but also improves the poor stability of the complexes. In this article, we introduce the luminescence mechanism of lanthanide complexes and point out the necessity of their combination with clay minerals. After the analysis of the structure and interlayer environment differences of 1:1-type and 2:1-type clay minerals, the intercalation methods (covalent grafting and ion exchange) appropriate for different clay minerals are summarized with examples. Based on the luminescence characteristics of the hybrid materials, the applications of these materials as luminescent probes in recognition of specific metal cations and molecules, detection of pH value, and temperature are reviewed. Finally, the current problems in the preparation of lanthanide complexes/clay minerals hybrid luminescent materials and shortcomings that need improvement in their performance are analyzed, and the application prospect is forecast.

Abstract:In this paper, the synthesis and properties of composite silica microspheres grafted with gold nanoparticles and lanthanide-polyoxometalates are described. This synthesis employs polyethyleneimine as the crosslink polymer to immobilize the Au nanoparticles and lanthanide-polyoxometalates on silica spheres, which results in the formation of bifunctional composite microspheres of silica/lanthanide-polyoxometalates/Au. The composite material was found to be catalytically active in the oxidation of styrene, and benzaldehyde and styrene oxide were the main products. Catalyzed oxidation of styrene demonstrates the size-dependent activity of catalysts and the smaller catalyst shows the higher selectivity. Moreover, the composite particles show bright red luminescence under UV light, which could be seen by naked eyes. The luminescence properties of composite material and the effect of Au nanoparticles on the luminescence of Eu ion were investigated, and energy could be more effectively transferred from ligand to lanthanide ion when Au nanoparticles were grafted on silica spheres. The integration of luminescent components and Au particles makes it possible to label catalyst and monitor the catalyzed reactions.

Abstract:<p>Lanthanide-based hybrid materials constructed by host–guest assembly strategy, displaying improved stability, better procesability and excellent luminescence performance simultaneously, have aroused much attention recently owing to their potential applications in various fields. This review mainly summarized some of the special luminescent hybrid materials using simpler and greener preparation strategy, including water-soluble hybrid materials, luminescent soft-hybrid materials based on ionic liquids, self-healing luminescent hybrid materials and luminescent hybrid materials based on bio-related materials. Particularly, this review discussed the deeper understanding of the influence on the luminescent behaviors exerted by some of inorganic matrices used to prepare the luminescent hybrid materials, and their potential applications in fields such as solar cells, LED, etc. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects in this regard be proposed.</p>

Abstract:We report here on the preparation of novel luminescent core-shell material by initial coating with polyelectrolytes and subsequent with a silica shell on the lanthanide complexes loaded zeolite L microcrystals. Lanthanide complexes loaded zeolite L was prepared by insertion of 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) into the nanochannels of zeolite crystals by gas diffusion of TTA to Eu3+ exchanged zeolite L, coating a silica shell on the lanthanide complexes loaded zeolite L resulted to the novel luminescent core-shell material. The luminescent core-shell material was further functionalized with silylated terbium(III) complex and the obtained material was used as the luminescence sensing of dipicolinic acid (DPA), which is a major constituent of many pathogenic spore-forming bacteria.

Abstract:Functional photoluminescent materials are emerging as a fascinating this work, luminescent organic-in-organic hybrid hydrogels are facilely designed through supramolecular self-assembly of sodium cholate, and lanthanide ions such as Eu3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+/Tb3+. Fluorescence microscopy and TEM visualization demonstrates the existence of spontaneously self-assembled nanofibers and 3D networks in hybrid hydrogel. Photoluminescence enhancement of lanthanide ions is realized through coordination with cholate and co-assembly into 1D nanofibers, which can successfully shield the Eu3+ from being quenched by water. The photoluminescence emission intensity of a hybrid hydrogel exhibits strong dependence on europium/cholate molar ratio, with maximum emission appearing at a stoichiometry of 1:3. Further-more, the emission color of a lanthanide-cholate hydrogel can be tuned by utilizing different lanthanide ions or co-doping ions. Moreover, photoluminescent lanthanide oxysulfide inorganic nanotubes are synthesized by means of a self-templating approach based on lanthanide-cholate supramolecular hydrogels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the lanthanide oxysulfide inorganic nanotubes are prepared in solution under mild conditions.

Abstract:Due to the wide potential application in the fields of sensing, lighting materials, and optical⁻electrical multifunctional devices, rare earth complex hybrid materials have been studied extensively over the past decades. A poly(ionic liquid)/mesoporous-based hybrid system which has been functionalized by the covalently linked europium complexes was reported here. Through surface modification with a coupling agent bearing an vinyl group, MCM-41 was chosen as the carrier matrix for poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) and europium compounds, and based on that, novel luminescent hybrid materials were prepared by confining the ionic liquid and europium complexes into the inorganic Si⁻O frameworks. The resulting organic/inorganic materials are chemically bonded hybrids which show good photoluminescent properties such as broad excitation spectra, line-like emission spectra, and long luminescence lifetimes. The PILs/MCM-41/Eu3+ hybrid reported here is a rare earth multifunctional material which is believed to have potential applications in the field of optical⁻electrical materials.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped nanocrystals that convert near-infrared (NIR) irradiation into shorter wavelength emission (ultraviolet-C) offer many exciting opportunities for biomedicine, bioimaging, and environmental catalysis. However, developing lanthanide-doped nanocrystals with high UVC brightness for efficient photocatalysis is a formidable challenge due to the complexity of the multiphoton process. Here, we report a series of heterogeneous core-multishell structures based on a co-sensitization strategy with multi-band enhanced emission profiles under 980 nm excitation. Interestingly, the multiphoton processes involving two to six-photon upconversion are highly promoted via a co-sensitization strategy. More importantly, through growth layers of TiO2 and CdS photocatalysts, these lanthanide nanocomposites with efficient multi-upconverted emission show efficient photocatalytic activity. This study provides a new perspective for mechanistic understanding of multiphoton processes in heterostructures and also offers exciting opportunities for highly efficient photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Lanthanide(III) beta-diketonate complexes (Ln = Eu, Nd, Er) were immobilized on an iso-nicotinic acid (nit)-functionalized titania material. lso-nicotinic acid was tethered to the titania material via reacting with titanium alkoxide; tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) lanthanide(III) dihydrate complexes were coupled to the titania via adduct formation with the nitrogen atoms from bonded iso-nicotinic acid; and the coordinated water molecules were expelled from the first coordination sphere of the lanthanide(III) ion as revealed by the prolonged lifetime of the hybrid titania material compared with that of the pure tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) europium(III). Depending on the lanthanide ion, the luminescent titania materials emit in the visible region (Ln = Eu) or in the near-infrared region (Ln = Nd, Er).

Abstract:Inorganic-organic hybrid nanoparticles formed by lanthanide-doped nanostructures and organic ligands have been intensively studied, which could greatly increase their photoluminescence performance as a result of the energy transfer process from organic ligands to Ln3+ ions. However, the photoluminescence intensity and excitation spectral width are still quite limited on coordinating with a single type of organic ligand. In this work, Eu3+ -doped LaF3 (LaF3 :Eu3+ ) nanoparticles were prepared using a hydrothermal method, and were then hybridized with benzoic acid and thenoyltrifluoroacetone to form the hybrid nanostructures. After that, the hybrid nanostructures were mixed with 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile and methyl methacrylate to prepare the composites. The sample obtained by hybridization and composite doping with 5% Eu3+ exhibited the best photoluminescence performance. The excitation peak width and luminescence intensity of the hybrid nanostructures were significantly increased. The excitation spectral width of the inorganic-organic mixed hybrid nanostructures was particularly enhanced, and covered the whole ultraviolet band region of solar light on Earth. The prepared composites exhibited good optical properties.

Abstract:Recently, the developing direction of materials is the functional complementarity and the property optimization. The rare earth complexes have highly luminescent properties and good chromatic purity, but they are unstable and lack the desired mechanical properties to be directly used as luminescent sources. These problems are expected to be solved by doping the complexes into suitable solid matrices. The resulting (inorganic/)organic hybrid luminescent materials combine the respective characteristics of organic and inorganic parts. According to the interactions between the rare earth complexes and the matrices, the hybrid materials include Class Ⅰ(the interactions are weak, typically hydrogen bonds or Van der Waals forces) and Class Ⅱ(the organic ligand is covalently linked to the silica framework). We briefly describe the preparation methods and give a review on the developments for the two classes hybrid luminescent materials. The developing trend for inorganic/organic hybrid materials doped with rare earth complex is also prospected.
