Abstract:Over 30% of the total citrus fruits grown all over the World are processed, generating large quantities of peel waste from which essential citrus oils are often extracted by traditional methods demanding high energy costs, long extraction times and additional reagents. In this research an alternative technique based on microwave-assisted hydro-distillation (MAHD) has been studied to successfully extract the essential oil present in wet citrus peel waste whilst reducing costs, avoiding the use of additives and improving the effectiveness of the process. To achieve this goal factors affecting the scalability of the process to develop a new bio-refinery model to be used at industrial scale were considered. Optimal conditions for the essential oil MAHD involved the irradiation of a waste orange peel:water mixture (1:1.5) over two subsequent steps using different irradiation powers for a total extraction time of 20 min (keeping a constant pressure of 300 mbar through all the process). The essential oil yield obtained in Navel Navelate oranges using MAHD accounted for 1.8 +/- 0.1% (dry basis; n = 3) and was comparable to that obtained by conventional hydro-distillation (1.7 +/- 0.1%; dry basis; n = 3). The applicability of the suggested methodology was successfully tested in other varieties of orange and citrus fruits leading to the potential to apply MAHD of essential oils from other waste feedstocks and offering an attractive process for future extraction processes at industrial scale. Abstract:Citrus limetta is a widely-processed fruit that generates 40% peel waste involving considerable constraints for waste management. Citrus limetta peel is a rich source of essential oil, especially d-limonene, commonly used as a fragrance and flavor ingredient. This study investigated the application of ultrasonication as a process-intensification tool with improved extraction-efficiency. Peleg's mathematical model was used to study the kinetics of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of d-limonene. The use of UAE reduces the total extraction time to 20 min compared to 185 min in a conventional process. In UAE, the highest extraction yield of d-limonene (32.9 mg/g, 97 %) was obtained using hexane as food-grade solvent, biomass:solvent ratio of 1:10, 2 mm particle size, agitation speed 300 rpm, temperature 60 °C with ultrasonic power 80 W, 50 % duty cycle and frequency 25 kHz. Analysis and characterization of the extract were carried out using HPLC, GC-MS, and FTIR. Also, the raw material surface morphology after the extraction was studied using SEM analysis. The acceptable agreement was seen in the calculated values of Ceq from Peleg's mathematical model and actual experimental results of extracted d-limonene. UAE stands as a fast, efficient, and economical method for the extraction of d-limonene from the fresh sweet lime peel.
Microwave Assisted Extraction of Citrus limetta Peel and assessment of its Bio-Actives Using HRLC-MS/MS

Abstract:Citrus limetta, often known as sweet lime, is one of India's most important crops due to its high demand in the agro-processing industry. Peel of Citrus limetta has signi�cant levels of polyphenolic chemicals that have pharmacological effects. In current study, the peel is valued for the bioactive compounds it contains. The total phenolic content (TPC) was 16.66 mg GAE/g with an extraction yield of 12.91%. Radical scavenging activity (RSA) was 78.05%, total �avanoid content (TFC) was 9.59 mg QE/g, and total phenolic content (TPC) was 9.59 mg QE/g. Sweet lime peel (SLP) extract was obtained by microwave assisted extraction (MAE) in methanol.LC-MS/MS results showed 18 �avonoid compounds along with polyphenols like rutin, curcumin diglucoside, carotenoid, coumeroic acid, coumaric acids, avonoid-7-o-glycosides, and Gardenin B that embrace anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inammatory, and antitumor activity. This method uses Q-TOF LC/MS with Agilent MassHunter Pro�ler software to investigate bioactive components in sweet lime peel.

Abstract:Carvol and carvone are oxidation products from the natural product limonene. They are important raw materials for the flavours and fragrances industry and also act as pharmaceutical active ingredients. Orange waste peels possibly represent an attractive source for limonene, but studies on valorizing orange peel wastes are rare. In this study, we report a new enzymatic cascade system for the in-situ conversion of limonene from orange peel into valued-added carvol and carvone. The use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) allows for efficient in-situ extraction of limonene from waste orange peels. We propose a dual function use of DES as solvent for the extraction and the biocatalytic oxidation of limonene as well as cosubstrate to promote the oxidation reaction. Using ChCl-Pro-H2O DES for the extraction of limonene from waste orange peels, approximately 17 milligrams of limonene per gram of orange peel was achieved at 40 degrees C for 24 h. Then, with ChCl-Pro-H2O DES as the extractant and reaction medium, a cascade reaction system of choline oxidase (ChOx) and unspecific peroxygenase (UPO) was established to catalyse the conversion of limonene into carvol and carvone. The concentration of the final products was up to about 1.6 mmol L-1. This study showed a biocatalytic transformation pathway and provides technical support for the high-value utilization of waste in orange peel.

Abstract:Sweet orange peel (Citrus sinensis) is part of orange plant that contains essential oils. Generally, taking essential oil from orange peel is still using hydrodistillation and steam-hydrodistillation method which still needs solvent and takes a long time to produce high quality essential oil. Therefore, the objectives of this experiment are to study the process of orange peel’s essential oil extraction using Solvent Free Microwave Extraction (SFME) and to study the operating condition that effect an optimum yield and quality of the essential oil. In this experiment, extraction process with SFME method goes for 60 minutes at atmospheric pressure. Variables for SFME are: variation of orange peel condition (fresh and dry), ratio orange peel mass to distiller volume (0,1; 0,2; 0,3; 0,4 g/mL), orange peel size (±0,5; ±2; ±3,5 cm width), and microwave power (100, 264, 400 Watt). Moisture content of fresh peel is 71,4% and for dry peel is 17,37% which is obtained by sun drying. The result of this experiment will be analyzed with GC-MS, SEM, density, and miscibility in ethanol 90%. The optimum result obtained from this experiment based on the number of the yield under condition of fresh orange peel is at peel mass/distiller volume 0,1 g/mL, orange peel size ±3,5 cm width, and microwave power 400 Watt, results 1,6738% yield. The result of GC-MS for fresh orange peel shows that the dominant compound is Limonene 54,140% and for dry orange peel is Limonene 59,705%. The density obtained is around 0,8282-0,8530 g/mL and miscibility in ethanol 90% is 1:5.

Abstract:Citrus peels are an ideal feedstock for their use in integrated, resource focused biorefinery activity for the production of high-value bio-chemicals, bio-fuels and bio-materials. Pectin and D-limonene, can be produced together with a rare form of mesoporous cellulose in a single step, without use of added acid, using a low temperature microwave hydrothermal processing of orange peel. A process temperature change enables the conversion of D-limonene to alpha-terpineol, showing that this process not only enables the separation of the major components but also adds further value to the citrus industry through the production of high-value marketable products.
Development of an ultrasound-assisted pre-treatment strategy for the extraction of D-Limonene toward the production of bioethanol from citrus peel waste (CPW)

Abstract:Citrus is one of the world's most abundant fruits containing vitamins, pigments, and fragrances, making it vital for several industries. However, these fruits contain about 45-50% residues (peels), which often end up as waste and can be harmful to the environment if not properly treated. Bioethanol production from citrus peel waste offers a potential solution to this problem. Hence, this study explores the potential of using ultrasound-assisted pre-treatment method as a novel strategy to extract D-Limonene (essential oil in the residue), and further demonstrates bioethanol production. This was done by investigating ultrasonication's optimal effect on pre-treatment of the citrus residue, followed by bioethanol production. The results show that, optimum values for D-Limonene extraction were obtained at a temperature of 14.6 °C and an ultrasound intensity of 25.81 W/cm2 with a validation yield of 134 ± 4.24 mg/100 g dry CPW. With optimal ultrasonic parameters, the study went further to demonstrate the effect of the essential oil on bioethanol production which is hindered by the oils present. Key findings show better bioethanol yield once the essential oil was extracted (treated) from the citrus waste as opposed to it not extracted (untreated), with a 66 and a 29% increase when comparing simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and sequential hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) respectively. Based on this result, ultrasound-assisted extraction as a pretreatment method was found suitable for bioethanol production from citrus residue and could be utilized as a biorefinery pre-treatment approach to scale bioethanol production.

Abstract:Acid extraction, ion-exchange resin, ammonium oxalate extraction and enzyme extraction are four main technologies used in citrus peel pectin extraction. Microware extraction has replaced the traditional extraction methods as a new technology gradually. The pectin industry in national country will be promoted with the emerging of microwave independent extraction. Compared with the microwave-assisted extraction technology , microwave independent extraction catches much attention because of its green, efficient, convenient, fast and high yield of output. It is a pectin extraction method in industry. The methods of traditional pectin extraction, microwave-assisted extraction in national country and microwave independent extraction in abroad were summarized. The traditional and the microwave methods were compared. In addition, the current development situation and prospect of citrus peel pectin extraction were also discussed.

Abstract:The one-third of all food produced for human use is wasted each year which has made food waste a serious problem all around the world. Citrus juice manufacturing factories generate peel leftovers that can account for 50-60% of the weight of the fruit, contributing significantly to food waste. This study investigates the extraction of orange and lemon peel oils using the Soxhlet process and their analysis via gas chromatography. The aim is to identify and quantify key volatile compounds present in these oils, thereby putting the leftover peels to use. Fresh orange and lemon peels were transformed into zest and extracted using Hexane and Ethanol as solvent in a Soxhlet apparatus. Gas chromatography with a specialized column and detector unveiled major volatile compounds, including limonene, linalool, citral. These compounds contribute to the characteristic aroma and potential bioactivity of the oils. Orange peels displayed notably higher limonene content compared to lemon peels. This approach illuminated the chemical composition of the oils, offering opportunities in food, cosmetics, and fragrance industries. Orange peels contained 70-90% limonene, significantly more than lemon peels. The study concluded that peels harbor 28 volatile substances, with limonene responsible for their distinctive citrus scent. In sum, this research underscores the effectiveness of Soxhlet extraction, providing insights into orange and lemon peel oils' composition using Gas chromatography and applications.

Abstract:There is an urgent need to develop new pectin extraction processes, as the established commercial extraction process damages the pectin (limiting the potential product applications) and is harmful to the environment. Microwave-Assisted Extraction could offer a sustainable route to pectin extraction from a wide range of food wastes and agricultural residues. We present the current state of the art in Microwave-Assisted Extraction of pectin, including the current understanding of the unique heat and mass transfer mechanisms at play during extraction. We review all of the recent literature, testing the commonly held view that microwave heating offers a general improvement in yield and dramatic reductions in processing time compared with conventional solvent extraction. In most of the literature reviewed, there was no evidence that this is the case. However, there is emerging evidence that Microwave-Assisted Extraction can provide processing advantages under some conditions, and that the feedstock dielectric properties and heating rate are important parameters. Preliminary attempts to scale this technology up have shown promise in terms of pectin yield, quality and Life Cycle Analysis compared with conventional extraction. The next steps should be to test more continuous processing concepts for a wider range of feedstocks, and develop more robust Life Cycle Analysis and technoeconomic models. This is the first review paper to focus on the Microwave-Assisted Extraction of pectin.

Recovery of Phenolic Compounds from Orange Peel Waste by Conventional and Assisted Extraction Techniques Using Sustainable Solvents

Abstract:Background: The valorization of orange peel waste (OPW) through the extraction of bioactive compounds is a clear example of the circular economy. OPW contains many value-added compounds, among which bioactive phenolic compounds (flavonoids and phenolic acids) could be extracted and used for industrial applications, such as pharmaceuticals or cosmetics. Methods: In this work, the extraction of phenolic compounds from orange peel was carried out by conventional (orbital shaker) and assisted (ultrasound and microwave) extraction techniques using deionized water, 80% (v/v) ethanol in water, and ethyl acetate as solvents. The effect of temperature, extraction time, and type of technique was evaluated and discussed following spectrophotometric (total phenolic content and total flavonoid content) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses of the extracts. Results: The most effective extraction in terms of efficiency was achieved by microwave-assisted extraction using 80% (v/v) ethanol in water as the extraction solvent, at 373 K for 6 min, which obtained 7.2 ± 0.1 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g OPW and 13.3 ± 0.1 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/g OPW, with the main bioactive compound extracted being hesperidin (58.2 ± 0.2 mg/g OPW). The most effective extraction in terms of energy consumption was achieved using ultrasound-probe-assisted extraction, yielding 8.8 ± 0.0 mg GAE/g OPW; 17.1 ± 0.1 mg QE/g OPW; 40.0 ± 0.2 mg hesperidin/g OPW, with an energy consumption of 18 kJ. Conclusions: Ultrasound and microwave-assisted extractions can be considered efficient extraction technologies for the valorization of OPW as they reduce extraction time and energy consumption and increase extraction yield.

Abstract:Although the peels of lemon and orange fruits are considered as a waste the essential oil extracted from them is important for food flavoring, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and detergent production. In this work, essential oils were extracted from fresh fruit peels of lemon (1.5%) and orange (3.4%) by hydro-distillation and their physiochemical properties were recorded. The chemical composition of the essential oils was also analyzed by GC-MS. Lemon fruit peel oil was composed of 12 compounds of which limonene (49.74%) was the main component and similarly orange fruit peel oil contained four compounds with limonene (95.19%) as major ingredient. The major component of the orange fruit peel oil was isolated by silica gel column chromatography and its structure was elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. In the meanwhile, it is possible to use the lemon and orange peels as the source of limonene, an important known bioactive compound. Raw lemon peel is applicable as a flavoring agent for baking bread, whereas the fruit leftovers can be used for compost preparation, and in the course municipal dry waste management can be improved.

Abstract:Background: Essential oils are utilized in various food applications and are a rich source of naturally occurring volatile components. The extraction of essential oils has used conventional techniques for several years, but these methods require a long duration of time, more solvent, and high energy. However, recent advancements have led to novel and eco-friendly techniques that significantly enhance the essential oil yield while minimizing the use of resources. Method: This study describes the recent research on the extraction of essential oils and their components, focusing on microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). Result: This review explores the instrumentation, mechanism, and applications behind MAE and UAE. It also describes the emerging technologies for the extraction of essential oils, along with their optimized conditions. Conclusion: These techniques represent a more sustainable and efficient approach for the extraction of essential oil from various plant sources, aligning with the principles of green chemistry.

Abstract:To maximize the reuse of citrus fruit processing waste, which is generated in large amounts due to juice production, this work shows the results of a new renewable approach for the extraction of high‐added‐value compounds present in orange biomass, specifically in orange peels (OP). The method is based on the use of diluted Ca2+, acid, and base solutions for the extraction of hesperidin (HSD), pectin, lignin, and cellulose sequentially, without generating any organic solid waste at the end, and without the need for air drying the starting biomass. Good yields of hesperidin were recovered (~1.56%), with excellent purity (up to 95%), as well as lignin (yield ~2.2%) and cellulose (yield ~12%). Pectin obtained by this process showed a high amount of galacturonic acid (~88%) and a low degree of methylation (~16%). All products were thoroughly characterized by applying Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and solid‐state cross‐polarization/magic angle spinning carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (CP/MAS 13C‐NMR). The products recovered from OP can be applied in a wide array of fields, such as food, medicine, and pharmaceuticals, among others.

Abstract:Within the framework of circular economy and process intensification, this work aimed to develop a two-way, microwave (MW)-assisted valorisation protocol for winemaking waste, namely grape stalk (GS), grape marc (GM) and exhausted grape marc (EGM). The first step evaluates the recovery of biologically active compounds (BACs). In this context, MW-assisted extraction (MAE) (200 W, 100 oC, 2 h) demonstrated to be an intensified approach for processing EGM, enhancing the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) by up to 436% (TAC) compared to conventional soaking. Various polyphenols including flavonols (quercetin), flavanols (catequin, epicatechin), anthocyanins (procyanidins (B1-B7)), as well as glycosylated structures (i.e., kaempferol 3-O-glucoside), were detected by LC-MS analysis in this matrix. Simultaneously, the conversion to the bio-based chemical levulinic acid (LevA) was carried out. Considering the environmental factor involved in the dimension of sustainability, environmentally friendly practices were adopted, based on an aqueous single-phase without organic solvent, reusable catalysts as p -toluenesulfonic acid ( p -TsA), and short reaction times (20 min). LevA yield reached 33.09% molar from the extractives-free (EF)-EGM matrix, surpassing the 22.31% obtained from the untreated one. Nonetheless, GS exhibited higher efficiency, yielding up to 34.75 and 59.83% from the untreated- and EF-GS matrices, respectively.

Abstract:This work focuses on modeling, simulation and techno‐economic analysis, motivated by the great potential for transforming the residues of sweet orange peel (Citrus sinensis) from the food industry into products with higher added value. A techno‐economic analysis of the extraction process of limonene and linalool using supercritical CO2 in a continuous flow was carried out on an industrial scale. The process was simulated using the Soave–Redlich–Kwong (SRK) thermodynamic equilibrium model. In order to find the maximum separation process yield, a 33 factorial design was used to analyze the main process factors, which were temperature, pressure, and solvent feed rate. Limonene was the principal component extracted. The optimum conditions for limonene extraction using a 12‐stage differential extractor were 50°C, 1930 kg h−1 and pressure around 74 bar, representing a 99.5% extraction from orange peel oil. The analyzed process conditions showed that the solution became saturated when the CO2/oil feed ratio was >19.7 kg h−1. Under these conditions, the cost of manufacturing was US$148.04 per kg of orange peel oil. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Abstract:Orange peel by-products generated in the food industry are an important source of value-added compounds that can be potentially reused. In the current research, the effect of oven-drying (50-70 °C) and freeze-drying on the bioactive compounds and antioxidant potential from Navelina, Salustriana, and Sanguina peel waste was investigated using pressurized extraction (ASE). Sixty volatile components were identified by ASE-GC-MS. The levels of terpene derivatives (sesquitenenes, alcohols, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, and esters) remained practically unaffected among fresh and freeze-dried orange peels, whereas drying at 70 °C caused significative decreases in Navelina, Salustriana, and Sanguina peels. Hesperidin and narirutin were the main flavonoids quantified by HPLC-MS. Freeze-dried Sanguina peels showed the highest levels of total-polyphenols (113.3 mg GAE·g-1), total flavonoids (39.0 mg QE·g-1), outstanding values of hesperedin (187.6 µg·g-1), phenol acids (16.54 mg·g-1 DW), and the greatest antioxidant values (DPPH•, FRAP, and ABTS•+ assays) in comparison with oven-dried samples and the other varieties. Nanotechnology approaches allowed the formulation of antioxidant-loaded nanoemulsions, stabilized with lecithin, starting from orange peel extracts. Those provided 70-80% of protection against oxidative UV-radiation, also decreasing the ROS levels into the Caco-2 cells. Overall, pressurized extracts from freeze-drying orange peel can be considered a good source of natural antioxidants that could be exploited in food applications for the development of new products of commercial interest.

Abstract:This study introduces an innovative approach, Ultrasonic Sonication Pretreatment Sparger-based Microwave Assisted Extraction (U Sp-MAE), designed to enhance lemongrass essential oil extraction. Addressing the challenge of maximizing yield and quality, our work systematically optimized key extraction parameters. Results demonstrated a significant improvement over conventional methods, with the highest yield of 1.89% achieved under specific conditions: a Sparger Flow rate of 4 L/min, Ultrasound Power of 700 W, Sonication Time of 5 min, and Liquid-to-Solid Ratio of 5 mL/g. This method not only advances essential oil extraction but holds promise for broader applications in society, showcasing its potential impact on sustainable and efficient resource utilization.
