Abstract:Phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) have manifested enormous potential for display and lighting applications because of their high internal and external quantum efficiencies, nevertheless, severe efficiency roll-off at high luminance remains a major bottleneck in their large-scale commercialization. Herein, two new bipolar host compounds, DCbz-Ph-Bz and DDPA-Ph-Bz, based on carbazole/diphenylamine as the donor and benzimidazole as the acceptor, are successfully obtained. By employing these materials as hosts, extremely low efficiency roll-off PhOLEDs without sacrificing the efficiency are realized. Especially, green PhOLED based on DDPA-Ph-Bz as the host and GD001 as the dopant demonstrated a low turn-on voltage of 2.6 V, a peak current efficiency (CE) of 62.2 cd/A and a maximum luminance of 39,370 cd/m(2). Importantly, our green device exhibited a very low efficiency roll-off as the peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 18.3% at 1000 cd/m(2) was still retained at 17.6% even at a high luminance of 10,000 cd/m(2). Likewise, red PhOLED with DCbz-Ph-Bz as the host and RD001 as the dopant displayed a high maximum EQE of 20.1% and a CE of 24.5 cd/A. High efficiency with low efficiency roll-off in our devices reveals the potential of bipolar molecules as excellent hosts to achieve high-performance PhOLEDs.

Abstract:The efficiency of OLEDs is fundamentally determined by the spin of excited state electrons. We have previously shown, using a new class of emissive molecules, carbene-metal-amides (CMA), an unusual emission pathway based on spin-state inter-conversion - intramolecular rotation induces a shift in the relative energies of the first excited singlet and triplet states, leading to extremely efficient singlet-triplet state interconversion and photoemission. In our recent work, we report solution-processed dual-dopant polymer LEDs, in which highly efficient electroluminescence occurs via an intermolecular energy transfer from CMAs to a fluorescent emitter. With electroluminescence from the simple fluorophore, we obtained record EQEs of >20% in these devices. Photophysical measurements indicate that ultrafast inter-fluorophore energy transfer occurs with near-unity efficiency. They preserve the relative colour purity of simple fluorophores, potential for energy-efficient printable electronics.

Abstract:Achieving high efficiency and small efficiency roll-off simultaneously for red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) is still a challenge, which is largely related to the host material used in device fabrication. In this wok, we designed and synthesized two novel bipolar host materials, termed 2Cz-TAZ-2Cz and 3Cz-TAZ-3Cz in which 1,2,4-triazole was introduced at the C-2 and C-3 positions of 9-phenylcarbazole, respectively. The materials' photophysical properties were studied in detail.. It was found that 2Cz-TAZ-2Cz and 3Cz-TAZ-3Cz possess excellent thermal stability with thermal decomposition temperature (Td) of 457 and 432 °C, respectively, and that 2Cz-TAZ-2Cz has a better bipolar carrier transport compared to the typical host 4, 4′-bis(9H-carbazole-9-yl)-biphenyl (CBP). Based on the excellent performance of these materials, red phosphorescent OLEDs with 2Cz-TAZ-2Cz and 3Cz-TAZ-3Cz as hosts and bis(1-phenylisoquinoline)(acetylacetonate)iridium (III) (Ir(piq)2acac) as emitter were fabricated. The optimized 2Cz-TAZ-2Cz-based device achieved a high maximum current efficiency and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 12.4 cd/A and 16.60%, respectively. Moreover, this device also exhibits a small efficiency roll-off, i.e., the EQE is lowered by only 12.0% and 29.4% at a brightness of 1000 cd/m2 and 10,000 cd/m2, respectively, which is superior to CBP-based device, indicating a potential far-reaching application.
Highly efficient top-emitting green phosphorescent OLEDs with a narrow band and slow efficiency roll-off for high-definition displays

Abstract:High-definition displays commonly require narrow-band spectra, stability and high efficiency, especially under high brightness. Two ambipolar hosts were developed with xanthone and dibenzofuran as binary n-type units and carbazole as a p-type unit, which showed glass transition temperatures over 140 °C and triplet energies of 2.8 eV. They were used as hosts for tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium (Ir(ppy) 3 ) to fabricate top-emission green-phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). Owing to the strengthened microcavity effect and favorable optoelectronic features of the host materials, the green PhOLEDs exhibited low turn-on voltages of 1.97 and 1.85 V and a narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 28 nm. Furthermore, the maximum current efficiency (CE) and power efficiency (PE) reached as high as 183.1 cd A −1 and 247.3 lm W −1 , respectively. More importantly, even at an ultra-high brightness of 66 000 cd m −2 , the efficiencies were maintained at 132.2 cd A −1 and 68.2 lm W −1 and surpassed many similar devices reported previously. In comparison with the prevailing multi-resonance thermally activated delayed-fluorescence (TADF) OLEDs, these top-emitting PhOLEDs were comparable in terms of extremely high efficiency and narrow-band color purity but superior in terms of their exceptional efficiency stability, high brightness, and facile synthesis, all of which make them suitable for practical application in high-definition displays.

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and exciton utilization efficiency are two key parameters to harvest high-efficiency electroluminekence (EL) in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). But it is not easy to simultaneously combine these two characteristics (high PL efficiency and high exciton utilization) into a fluorescent material. In this work, an efficient combination was achieved through two concepts of hybridized local and charge-transfer (CT) state (HLCT) and "hot exciton", in which the former is responsible for high PL efficiency while the latter contributes to high exciton utilization. On the basis of a tiny chemical modification in TPA-BZP, a green-light donor-acceptor molecule, we designed and synthesized CzP-BZP with this efficeient combination: of high PL efficiency of eta(PL) = 75% in the solid state and maximal exciton utilization efficiency up to 48% (especially, the internal quantum efficiency of eta(IQE) = 35% substantially exceed 25% of spin statistics limit) in OLED. The nondoped OLED of CzP=BZP exhibited an excellent performance: a green emission with a CIE coordinate of (0.34, 0.60), a maximum current efficiency of 23.99 cd A(-1), and a maximum external quanturn efficiency (EQE, eta(EQE)) of 6.95%. This combined HLCT state and "hot exciton" strategy should be a practical way to design next-generation, tow-cost, high efficiency fluorescent OLED materials.

Abstract:In this work, we report the design and optimization of yellow organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with tris [2-(p-tolyl)pyridine]iridium (III) (Ir (mppy)3) doped 4,4′,4′-tris(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine (TCTA) and bis(2-phenylquinoline) (2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate)iridium (III) (PQ2Ir (dpm)) doped 2,6-bis(3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)phyridine (26DCzPPy) films as green and red light-emitting layers (EMLs). Experimental results demonstrated that the designed double EMLs system is beneficial in carriers' distribution, exciton confinement and reducing triplet exciton quenching because of the matched energy levels and triplet energies of hosts and dopants. Finally, the optimal device showed a very maximal current efficiency of 65.51 cd/A, slow roll-off of efficiency with a very high current efficiency of 63.54 cd/A at 5000 cd/m2, and excellent yellow emission with CIE coordinates of (0.468, 0.493) at 10 mA/cm2.

Abstract:In this contribution, a novel bipolar host material, namely CzTrz, consisting of a phenylcarbazole for hole transport and a diphenyltriazine for electron transport, was synthesized and investigated. Besides, a carbazole-based unipolar host BCz2 was designed as a reference. Both CzTrz and BCz2 display good thermal stability, high triplet energy level (ET) and suitable frontier orbital levels. Green PhOLEDs hosted by CzTrz and BCz2 show turn-on voltage (Von) of 3.5 and 3.8 V, maximum luminance (Lmax) of 30,280 and 35,050 cd m−2, and maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 15.49 and 11.84%, respectively. Remarkably, the CzTrz-based device reveals an extremely low efficiency roll-off at the high luminance, for example, 15.35% at 1000 cd m−2 and 13.85% at 5000 cd m−2, corresponding to merely 0.9% and 10.6% roll-off percentage, which is among the best results ever reported as green bipolar hosts.

Abstract:Host materials are of great significance to achieve high-performance host-guest organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) through restraining the exciton annihilation in the emissive layer. Herein, four bipolar molecules bearing benzothienocarbazole (BTCz)/benzothienocarboline (BTCb) and benzimidazole (Bi) moieties were designed and synthesized. Using them as hosts, green phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs) with maximum current efficiency (CEmax) of 90.8 cd A(-1), power efficiency (PEmax) of 76.5 lm W-1, and external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) of 27.9% were obtained. More importantly, it was found that these four molecules could be used as electron-donating materials to interact with electron-accepting triazine derivatives to form electroplexes. Employing these electroplexes as hosts, highly efficient green PhOLEDs with CEmax of 104.4 cd A(-1), PEmax of 85.1 lm W-1, EQE(max) of 29.9%, and extremely small efficiency roll-offs (EQE = 29.5%, 1.3% roll-off at 1,000 cd m(-2); EQE = 28.3%, 5.4% roll-off at 5,000 cd m(-2)) were achieved. The excellent device performances fully exhibit the promising potential of electroplexes as hosts for high-performing OLEDs.

Abstract:Achieving an excellent device performance with slow roll-off efficiency is still a crucial requirement for phosphorescent OLEDs in displays and white lighting applications. Three bipolar host materials comprised of carbazole, pyridine and triazole units, namely o-CzTPy, p-CzTPy, and 3-CzTPy were synthesized and developed. They are designed by selecting the pyridine and triazole groups together as an electron-transporting unit, and varying the different linking modes of the functional groups to optimize performance. These materials possessed high triplet energies (2.66 eV–2.69 eV), and good bipolar charge transporting abilities. FIrpic and Ir(ppy)3 based blue and green PhOLEDs incorporating these bipolar hosts show low turn-on voltage, high efficiencies and slow efficiency roll-off. Among them, a maximum efficiency of 22.25% (41.98 cd A−1) was achieved for o-CzTPy based blue device. More importantly, the o-CzTPy based green device achieved the desirable high efficiency of 29.08% (96.98 cd A−1), which is among the highest values for PhOLEDs with dopant Ir(ppy)3 ever reported in public scientific literatures. These excellent results demonstrated that these bipolar hosts possess high practical value for application in commercial PhOLEDs.

Abstract:Orange‐emitting phosphorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) are drawing more and more attention; however, high‐performance hosts designed for orange PHOLEDs are rare. Here, four indolocarbazole/1, 3, 5‐triazine hybrids are synthesized to optimize the singlet and triplet energies, as well as transporting properties, for ideal orange PHOLEDs. By introducing moieties with different electronegativity, a graded reduction of the singlet and triplet energies is achieved, resulting in minimum injection barrier and minimum energy loss. Besides, the charge transporting abilities are also tuned to be balanced on the basis of the bipolar features of those materials. The optimized orange PHOLED shows a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 24.5% and a power efficiency of 64 lm W–1, both of which are among the best values for orange PHOLEDs. What is more, the efficiency roll‐off is extremely small, with an EQE of 24.4% at 1000 cd m–2 and 23.8% at 10 000 cd m–2, respectively, which is the lowest efficiency roll‐off for orange PHOLEDs to date, resulting in the highest EQE for orange PHOLEDs when the luminance is above 1000 cd m–2. Besides the balanced charges, the small roll‐off is also attributed to the wide recombination zone resulting from the bipolar features of the hosts.
High and Balanced Bipolar‐Transporting Deep‐Blue HLCT Material for Efficient Monochrome and White OLEDs based on a Simple Phenanthroimidazole‐Dibenzothiophene Derivative

Abstract:A deep‐blue hybridized local and charge‐transfer emitter PPIS can act as an efficient emitter and host for phosphorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), realizing the external quantum efficiencies of 6.68%, 19.32%, 25.35%, and 22.19% in blue/green/yellow/red monochrome OLEDs and high efficiencies of over 95.9 lm W−1 and 26.8% in hybrid white OLEDs. The irreconcilable contradiction between wide bandgap and charge carriers injection/transport in deep‐blue organic electroluminescence materials is one of the largest bottlenecks restricting the development of organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, a multifunctional deep‐blue hybridized local and charge‐transfer material containing a phenanthroimidazole‐dibenzothiophene derivative that can act as an emitter as well as a host for phosphorescent OLEDs is reported. Owing to its high and balanced bipolar‐transporting ability, remarkable fluorescence efficiency, and suitable triplet energy level, the deep‐blue device with it as a neat emitter provides an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 6.68%, while yellow and red phosphorescent OLEDs offer the EQEs of 25.35% and 22.19%, respectively. All of them exhibit low‐efficiency roll‐off characteristics. What's more amazing is that the fluorescent/phosphorescent hybrid white OLEDs achieve high power efficiencies and EQEs over 95.9 lm W−1 and 26.8%, and the values are still higher than 77.7 lm W−1 and 25.6% at the high luminance of 1000 cd m−2.

Abstract:In this paper, two new bipolar host materials ( CZ- p -TRZ and CZ- m -TRZ ) which consist of 9-phenylcarbazole as the donor and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine as the acceptor were synthesized and characterized. Two compounds exhibit excellent thermal stability and appropriate triplet energy levels (E T ). Based on the above advantages, Ir(ppy) 3 -based green phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) were fabricated with CZ- p -TRZ and CZ- m -TRZ as host. Both PhOLEDs show good performance with maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQE max ) of 16.83 and 19.40%, respectively. Especially, two devices also exhibit extremely small efficiency roll-off, and at a practical luminance of 1000 cd/m 2 , only 0.1% drop in efficiency was observed for two devices, which is among the best results ever reported as green bipolar hosts.

Abstract:Host material stability is essential to increase the lifetime for full-spectrum luminescence in efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), especially red phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs). While the structural diversity of red emitters has developed rapidly in recent years, high-quality host materials are scarce and still rely heavily on traditional structures. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed by introducing heptacyclic heteroaromatics with an armor-like structure to design structurally non-traditional red hosts that are rigid enough to suppress conformational relaxation through reduced vibrations, thereby inhibiting non-radiative decay and improving stability. Accordingly, the red PhOLEDs based on the host named 2-([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-4-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine (Hept-TRZ) exhibit exceptional performance with a maximum current efficiency of 30.8 cd A −1 and the highest maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 29.6% at 620 nm, as well as the high luminance of 65172 cd m −2 . In particular, with satisfactory morphological stability and well-balanced hole and electron transport properties, the PhOLED device retains 95% of the luminance (LT 95 ) even after 8777 hours of continuous operation at 1000 cd m −2 , firmly establishing the negligible efficiency roll-off and superior stability with the new heptacyclic host. This work validates the superiority of this molecular design strategy and provides an instructive strategy for designing effective hosts for highly efficient and stable red PhOLEDs.

The reddish orange OLEDs achieve a strikingly high power efficiency (PE) of 31.80 lm/W with an ultralow threshold voltage of 2.24 V which is almost equal to the triplet energy level of the phosphorescent reddish orange emitting dopant. The power efficiency of the device with the exciplex-forming host is enhanced, achieving 36.2% mainly owing to the lower operating voltage by the novel exciplex forming cohost, compared with the reference device (23.54 lm/W). Moreover, the OLEDs show extraordinarily low current efficiency (CE) roll-off to 1.41% at the brightness from 500 to 5000 cd/m2 with a maximal CE of 32.87 cd/A (EQEmax = 11.01%). The devices display a good reddish orange color (CIE of (0.628, 0.372) at 500 cd/m2) nearly without color shift with increasing brightness. Co-host architecture phosphorescent OLEDs show a simpler device structure, lower working voltage, and a better efficiency and stability than those of the reference devices without the cohost architecture, which helps to simplify the OLED structure, lower the cost, and popularize OLED technology.
High Performance Non-Doped Blue-Hazard-free Hybrid White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Stable High Color Rendering Index and Low Efficiency Roll-off

Abstract:White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), for display and lighting applications, combine features such as high performance, high color quality, low efficiency roll-off and blue-hazard-free are extremely important. In this study, we manufactured a highly efficient bluish-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) OLED. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), power efficiency (PE), and current efficiency (CE) were 16.0%, 46.2 lm/W, and 45.9 cd/A, respectively. Next, a non-doped and blue-hazard-free hybrid WOLED was prepared by employing reasonably inserting several red and yellow ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between the bluish-green TADF emitters. The device showed a maximum EQE of 18.7% and a low EQE roll-off of 7%. At 1000 cd/m(2), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 87 and a low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2759 were obtained. The result showed that bluish-green TADF material has potential applications in healthy WOLEDs without blue-hazard. Also, the strategy of inserting several long-wavelength ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between bluish-green TADF emitters with bipolar transport characteristic, which can reduce efficiency roll-off and enhance device electroluminescence efficiency, was demonstrated.
Highly Distorted Bipolar Host Material Based On Benzimidazole And Indole Derivative For Efficient Green And Red Solution-Processed Pholeds

Abstract:A novel bipolar host material 2-(2'-(5-(dibenzo[b,d]furan-4-yl)-1H-indol-1-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-yl)-1-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (DY1) based on electron-donating indole and electron-withdrawing benzimidazole was designed and synthesized for solution-processed phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). The highly distorted conformation derived from the orthogonally connected donor and acceptor on the 1,3'-biphenyl bridge endowed DY1 with high thermal stability (T-g 122 degrees C) and a high triplet energy of 2.69 eV. Solution-processed PhOLEDs fabricated with DY1 host achieved excellent performance of 47.05 cd/A, 34.0 lm/W and 14.27% for green PhOLED, and 32.95 cd/A, 17.0 lm/W and 16.57% for the red PhOLED, respectively. This result revealed the structural advantage of the host material in high efficiency and low efficiency roll-off in PhOLEDs. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A high-efficiency and pure white OLED has been realized by only doping one novel phosphorescent orange-light-emitting complex (bzq)(2)Ir(dipba) into a suitable deep-blue-emitting fluorescent complex Bepp(2) as an emissive layer. The highest efficiency for white OLEDs with a simple HTL-EML-ETL architecture, with a peak power efficiency (PE) of 48.8 lm W-1 and a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 27.8%, has been realized by employing both singlet and triplet excitons for emission. The PE and EQE at the applicable brightness of 1000 cd m(-2) are 37.5 lm W-1 and 36.8%, respectively.
