Abstract:Accelerating the sluggish anode reaction in a Zn–air battery can improve its energy efficiency, but the large-scale development of this battery is hindered by the lack of bifunctional catalysts. Herein, we designed a one-step carbonization strategy for synthesizing monodispersed Co nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon nanotube (Co/CNT), which shows excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance with long-term durability for oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction. The formation of carbon substrates from the carbonization of nitrogenous organic molecules are benefit to capture more Co nanoparticles though strong metal–substrate interaction, then construct high-density effective active sites of the Lewis base for accelerating the electrocatalytic reaction process. To verify its superior performance, a rechargeable Zn–air battery with a Co/CNT air electrode was subsequently constructed. The battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.41 V and a specific discharge capacity of 835.2 mAh/gZn, which can be continuously charged and discharged with good cycle stability. Our study provides a new strategy for developing various practical carbon-based non-noble metallic bifunctional electrocatalysts with promising performance in electrocatalysis and batteries to achieve the target of carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Developing bifunctional oxygen catalysts with high efficiency and low cost to replace platinum-group metal catalysts commonly utilized in metal-air batteries is critically desired. In this article, a convenient method to synthesis NiFe nanoparticles hybridized with N-doped carbon nanotube (NiFe@N-CNTs) is reported. Electrocatalytic performance analysis indicates that Ni x Fe 1− x @N-CNTs offers favorable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics (onset potential ( E onset ) is 0.87 V and half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) is 0.84 V), together with excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance (an overpotential of 270 mV to drive 10 mA·cm −2 ). Contributed by the synergetic effect between NiFe alloy and N-CNTs, when being utilized as air cathode, rechargeable Zn-air batteries present superior cycling stability for over 150 h. This research provides a universal strategy to synthesize the hybrids of intertwined carbon nanotube matrix loaded with alloy nanoparticles.

Abstract:The fabrication of cost effective and efficient electrocatalysts with functional building blocks to replace noble metal ones is of great importance for energy related applications yet remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the fabrication of a hierarchical structure containing CNTs/graphene/transition-metal hybrids (h-NCNTs/Gr/TM) with excellent bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity. The synthesis was rationally designed by the growth of shorter nitrogen-doped CNTs (S-NCNTs) on longer NCNTs arrays (L-NCNTs), while graphene layers were in situ generated at their interconnecting sites. The hybrid material shows excellent OER and ORR performance, and was also demonstrated to be a highly active bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries, which could be due to rapid electron transport and full exposure of active sites in the hierarchical structure.
Carbon nanotube-encapsulated Co/Co3Fe7 heterojunctions as a highly-efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Abstract:In oxygen electrocatalysis, how to rationally design low-cost catalysts with reasonable structure and long-term stability is a crucial issue. Here, an in-situ growth strategy is used to construct a shaped structure encapsulating a uniformly-dispersed Co/Co3Fe7 heterojunction in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co/Co3Fe7@NCNTs). Hollow CoFe layered-double-hydroxide prisms act as sacrifices for in-situ growth of Co/Co3Fe7 nanoparticles, which also catalyze the growth of bamboo-like NCNTs. Tubular structure not only accelerates the charge transfer through the interactions between Co and Co3Fe7, but also limits the aggregation of the particles, thereby promoting the 4e- oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) kinetics and stabilizing the bifunctional activity. Co/Co3Fe7@NCNTs-800 (pyrolyzed at 800 °C) shows exceptional ORR activity (half-wave potential of 0.89 V) and methanol tolerance. Meanwhile, Co/Co3Fe7@NCNTs-800 shows a small OER overpotential of 280 mV, which increases by only 9 mV after 1000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles. The outstanding bifunctionality (potential gap of 0.62 V) is ascribed to the electronic structure modulation at the Co/Co3Fe7 heterointerface. Notably, it also has a high performance as an air-cathode for rechargeable zinc-air battery, showing high power density (165 mW cm-2) and specific capacity (770.5 m Ah kg-1). This work provides a new reference for promoting the development of alloy catalysts with heterogeneous interfaces.

Abstract:Developing noble metal-free bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is vital for metal-air batteries. Herein, we present a facile approach to fabricating N-doped carbon nanosheet networks with metal nanoparticles (M/N-CNSNs) readily converted from metal-organic frameworks. The resultant Co/N-CNSNs show superior bifunctional oxygen catalytic activity attributed to the efficient active sites and fast mass diffusion enabled by the nanosheet structure. It is worth noting that the first-principles studies prove the Co/N-C sites to be the oxygen reduction reaction active sites, where the most favorable ones are the carbon atoms next to Co-coordinated pyridinic N. Interestingly, the cobalt content plays an important role in Co/N-C sites but was not directly involved in the catalytic process. In a Zn-air battery, a small voltage gap without obvious voltage loss is found for the Co/N-CNSNs. This facile approach enables scalable synthesis, representing an essential step toward the popularization of metal-air batteries.

Abstract:A novel 3D nanoarchitecture comprising in situ-formed N-doped CoNi alloy-encapsulated carbon nanotubes (CoNi-NCNTs) grown on N-doped porous carbon nanosheets (NPCNs) is designed and constructed for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). When evaluated as an electrocatalyst for ORR, the hybrid shows efficient catalytic activity, high selectivity, superior durability, and strong tolerance against methanol crossover compared with the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Such good oxygen reduction reaction performance is comparable to most of the previously reported results and the synergistic effect is found to boost the catalytic performance. Moreover, the constructed hybrid exhibits an excellent ORR activity with a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at 1.59 V and an onset potential of 1.57 V, even beyond the state-of-the-art Ir/C catalyst in alkaline media. The enhancement in electrochemical performance can be attributed to the unique morphology and defect structures, high porosity, good conductive networks, and strongly interacting CoNi-NCNT and NPCN in the hybrid. These results suggest the possibility for the development of effective nanocarbon electrocatalysts to replace commercial noble metal catalysts for direct use in fuel cells and water splitting devices.

Abstract:The carbon-based electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air battery not only needs bifunctional activities to oxygen reduction and evolution reactions, but also requires a high graphitization degree to maintain an excellent stability. Herein, a simple and scale-up strategy is developed to synthesize a highly active and stable electrocatalyst () through a solid-state thermal conversion process, derived from a single and easy-to-get precursor (cobaltic Prussian blue analogue). The Co particles trapped inside the tips are the growth sites of the carbon nanotubes and greatly improve the catalytic activity. This kind of special structure helps to achieve remarkable bifunctional activities comparable to the noble metal counterparts and superior durability. Interestingly, is proved to have no single-atom Co sites on the carbon nanotube. In combination with electrochemical tests, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, N-C is considered to be the best ORR active site while N-C is the best OER active site.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) are often functionally separated, meaning that they are only proficient at one of the tasks. Here we report a high-performance bifunctional catalyst for both ORR and OER in both alkaline and neutral media, which is made of cobalt-embedded nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes. In OER, it shows an overpotential of 200 mV in 0.1 M KOH and 300 mV in neutral media, while the current density reaches 50 mA cm(-2) in alkaline media and 10 mA cm(-2) in neutral media at overpotential of 300 mV. In ORR, it is on par with Pt/C in both alkaline and neutral media in terms of overpotential, but its stability is superior. Further study demonstrated that the high performance can be attributed to the coordination of N to Co and the concomitant structural defects arising from the transformation of cobalt-phthalocyanine precursor.

Abstract:Bifunctional catalysts are vital for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal-air batteries. In this work, Co-Co3O4/N-doped carbon nanosheets (NCNs) were developed as highly efficient bifunctional oxygen catalysts via the pyrolysis of a hybrid ZIF-67/CNs precursor. It is found that the introduced CNs play important roles. On one hand, the introduced CNs can tune the surface contents of Co, N and/or O species that are closely correlated with OER and ORR activity. On the other hand, they also facilitate to achieve high specific surface areas for the catalysts. In addition, the introduced CNs helps the formed Co-Co3O4 hybrid nanoparticles with uniform and small sizes to be well distributed on the NCNs substrates. Despite such important roles, it should be noted that a moderate content of the introduced CNs is required to achieve optimal oxygen catalytic activity. As a result, the optimized ZIF-67/CNs(1)-600 exhibits a low value of rho (similar to 350 mV) for OER and a high value of E-1/2 (similar to 0.85 V) for ORR. Its overall bifunctional activity (AE) is as low as similar to 0.73 V, which is comparable to the recent reported Co-based catalysts. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Interfacial Engineering of Bimetallic Carbide and Cobalt Encapsulated in Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Engineering heterojunction is an underlying strategy to develop efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by tune electronic properties by interfacial cooperation. Herein, we reported a heterojunction electrocatalyst (Co 3 ZnC/Co@NCNTs) by a facile ions exchange‐thermolysis two‐step strategy. Co 3 ZnC coupled with Co@NCNTs can effectively promote the interfacial charge transport between different components, optimized the adsorption and desorption behavior of intermediate products at the heterointerface. In‐situ grown N‐doped CNTs can not only improve the electrical conductivity but also can suppress the oxidation of transition metal nanoparticles in alkaline media. Moreover, the abundant nitrogen types (pyridinic, Co‐N x and grapitic nitrogen) in carbon skeleton can provide more active sites for oxygen adsorption. Benefit from the in situ grown NCNTs with outstanding electrical conductivity, the abundant nitrogen types (pyridinic‐N, Co‐N x and graphitic‐N), and the synergistic effect among components, Co 3 ZnC/Co@NCNTs hybrid not only demonstrates excellent oxygen reduce activity with a half‐wave potential of 0.83 V and fast mass transport with limited current density of 6.23 mA·cm ‐2 , but also exhibits superior stability and methanol tolerance, surpassed commercial Pt/C catalysts. This work provides an effective heterostructure for interfacial electronic modulation to improve its electrocatalytic performance.
