Abstract:A new series of energetic salts based on all-carbon-nitramino-functionalized fused-triazole backbone were synthesized and fully characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, IR, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance as well as elemental analysis. Crystal structures of compounds 5 and 7 were confirmed by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and their crystal packing characteristics were thoroughly explored by NCI and Hirshfeld surfaces analysis. The densities of new compounds range from 1.70 to 1.82 g cm−3. All energetic salts exhibit good thermostability and are less sensitive than RDX, while their theoretical detonation pressures and velocities range within 25.7–33.5 GPa and 8272–9138 m s−1, respectively. Salts 2, 4, 5 and 6 possess fascinating detonation velocities and acceptable stabilities which make them competitive high-energy-density materials. Thus significant contribution of the planarity of DNATT anion to improved stabilities and maintaining high detonation performances of energetic salts was distinctly proved as compared with that of 3,6,7-trinitramino[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4]triazole anion.

Abstract:The synthesis of the new energetic material 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-methyl-1,2,4-triazole, which shows excellent performance and reliable safety, has drawn attention recently. To fully characterize this material, a comprehensive analysis was performed using various techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, three compounds, 3, 5 and 9, were further characterized using single X-ray diffraction. The X-ray data suggested that extensive hydrogen bonds affect molecular structure by means of intermolecular interactions. In order to evaluate the explosive properties of these synthesized compounds, detonation pressures and velocities were calculated using EXPLO5 (V6.01). These calculations were carried out utilizing experimental data, including density and heat of formation. Among the explosives tested, compounds 7 and 8 exhibited zero oxygen balance and demonstrated exceptional detonation properties. Compound 7 achieved the highest recorded detonation pressure, at 34.2 GPa, while compound 8 displayed the highest detonation velocity, at 8887 m s−1.

Abstract:To balance the properties and stability of the energetic materials, the synthesis of the new energetic materials 3-amino-4-(4-amino-5-hydrazine-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl) furazan and its energetic salts were reported which show excellent performance and safety. Also, the azo compound 1,2-bis(4-(5-azido-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl) -furazan-3-yl) was prepared and got two -N3 groups unexpectedly. All the new compounds were fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis (EA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, the structure of compounds 2, 4, 7 were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray date shows that energetic salts have extensive hydrogen bonds which are good to the stability of these energetic salts, and it also shows that azo compound has two conformations. In order to get detonation properties of these synthesized compounds, EXPLO5 was used to calculate. According to the calculated results, all ionic salts are inductive energetic materials with good detonation performances (D= 8064-8698m s−1, P= 25.8-31.8GPa) and azo compound has the detonation speed of 8190 m s−1 and achieved the detonation pressure at 24.9GPa. Additionally, the azo compound was tested through the initiation test which shows that it has good detonation ability, has the chance to be the green metal-free primary explosive.

Abstract:A novel azole cationic skeleton, MTAT, was synthesized to give the derivation of four new energetic salts with excellent comprehensive properties. Among these, Compound 1 ranked among the top performers in monocyclic azolium‐based CHON energetic salts for various key properties: density (top 20%), thermal decomposition temperature (top 10%), and impact sensitivity (top 8%). A thermally stable and high nitrogen content energetic cation N,N'‐methylene‐bis(3,4,5‐triamino‐1,2,4‐triazolium) (MTAT, N = 69.38%, ΔHf = 1959.07 kJ/mol) has been used as a building block for preparing a new family of energetic salts. Compounds 1 and 4 were characterized by infrared and multinuclear NMR spectra. Structural confirmation of four salts (1–4) was supported by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Theoretical calculations were performed to calculate the heats of formation and detonation performance using Gaussian 09 and EXPLO5 v6.05 programs, respectively. The impact and friction sensitivity of COMPOUNDS 1 and 2 were measured using BAM standards. Based on experimental and theoretical results, two energetic salts (1 and 3) featuring the novel cation framework MTAT exhibited favorable densities ranging from 1.751 to 1.809 g cm−3 at 298 K, excellent thermal stability (Td: 250–257 °C), acceptable detonation performance (D: 8001–8097 m s−1, P: 23.3–26.7 GPa), and good impact and friction sensitivity (IS: 18–40 J, FS: 240–360 N).

Abstract:The energetic derivatives of nitrogen-rich 3,4,5-triamino-1-tetrazolyl-1,2,4-triazolium (TATT) cation combined with nitrate (1), chloride (2) and perchlorate (3) anions were synthesized from the reaction of 3,4,5-triamino-1-tetrazolyl-1,2,4-triazole with various acids. All salts were characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. Their structures were verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Salt 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system P21/c. Salt 2 and 3 crystallize in the triclinic system P-1. Both theoretical and experimental methods demonstrate these compounds having positive heats of formation. Their sensitivities to impact and friction were also determined.

Abstract:The current work is dedicated to the search for new high-energy materials (HEMs) with improved characteristics, which are gained through agglomeration with salts. The research was performed by Becke's three-parameter hybrid functional approach, with non-local correlation provided by Lee, Yang, and Parr, and the cc-pVTZ basis set. The structure, total energy, and heat of formation, presented as binding energy per atom of the most stable compounds formed due to 3-amino-5-[(2, 4, 6-trinitrophenyl) amino]-1H-1,2,4-triazole (APATO) within selected salts, were obtained to foresee its influence on resistance to shock stimuli, detonation pressure, and velocity of the materials under study. The results obtained allow us to foresee that only agglomeration with precise salts could lead to a significant improvement in the stability of the specific high-energy materials and resistance to shock stimuli. We also show that agglomeration leads to better energetic properties of the above-mentioned compound, although the improvement may be insignificant in some cases.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich energetic salts have attracted considerable interest recently, due to their fascinating thermal stability and energetic performance. In this work, N-methylene-C-bridged nitrogen-rich heterocycle (5-((5-amino-tetrazol-1-yl)methyl)-1,2,4-triazole-3,4-diamine (ATMTDA) (1)) were synthesized and its nitrogen-rich energetic salts ((ATMTDA) 2 [(HATMTDA)(DCNM)] 2 H 2 O (2), (HATMTDA)NO 3 (3), (H 2 ATMTDA)(NO 3 ) 2 (4), (HATMTDA)ClO 4 (5), (HATMTDA)NTO (6), and (H 2 ATMTDA)(PA) 2 (H 2 O) 2 (7)) were prepared. These energetic compounds were fully characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The NBO charge of 1 was calculated by density functional theory, to understand which N atoms was more vulnerable to attack by H protons to become cations. And the thermal stability of these compounds was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with acceptable results ( T dec > 190 °C). All of the studied compounds except for compound 5 (FS=216 N, IS=3 J) exhibited less sensitivities than RDX ((FS=120 N, IS=7.4 J), and compound 1 (8.62 km/s, 25.71 GPa) showed good detonation performance. All of the results illustrated the potential application of the compounds as energetic materials.

Abstract:5‐amino‐3‐nitro‐1‐nitramino‐1,2,4‐triazole was synthesized through the nitration reaction of 1,5‐diamino‐3‐nitro‐1,2,4‐triazole, and several energetic salts were prepared based on the reactivity of the acidic proton in nitramino group (−NHNO2). The simple synthetic route, free of heavy metals and superior detonation properties of these synthesized compounds make them serve as promising candidate for green primary explosives. 5‐amino‐3‐nitro‐1‐nitramino‐1,2,4‐triazole was synthesized through the nitration reaction of 1,5‐diamino‐3‐nitro‐1,2,4‐triazole, and several energetic salts were prepared based on the reactivity of the acidic proton in nitramino group (−NHNO2). These compounds were fully characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Their thermal stabilities were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and Impact and friction sensitivities were determined using standard BAM technology. Moreover, the structural differences between individual compounds were studied to investigate the potential structure‐property relationship. All compounds possess positive heats of formation calculated based on isodesmic reaction to be between 173.7~454.6 kJ ⋅ mol−1. Among them, 5‐amino‐3‐nitro‐1‐nitramino‐1,2,4‐triazole (D=8682 m ⋅ s−1, P=33.0 GPa, IS=0.75 J), hydrazine salt (D=8908 m ⋅ s−1, P=34.9 GPa, IS=0.5 J) and hydroxylamine salt (D=9117 m ⋅ s−1, P=36.7 GPa, IS=2 J) exhibits desirable detonation properties similar to RDX (D=8795 m ⋅ s−1, P=34.9 GPa), calculated by Kamlet‐Jacobs equations and features comparable impact sensitivity with DDNP (IS=1 J). The simple synthetic route, free of heavy metals and superior detonation properties of above compounds make them serve as promising candidate for green primary explosives.

Abstract:Various 7H,7′H-[6,6′-bi[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4]triazole]-3,3′,7,7′-tetramine ( A ) based nitrogen-rich energetic salts were designed and their properties explored. All energetic salts possess relatively high nitrogen content (> 48%), positive heats of formation (> 429 kJ/mol) and stability owing to a significant contribution from fused backbone. The cationic component shows a very high heat of formation (2516 kJ/mol); therefore, it is highly suitable for enthalpy enhancement in new energetic salts. The cation was paired with the energetic anions nitrate (NO 3 − ), perchlorate (ClO 4 − ), dinitromethanide (CH(NO 2 ) 2 − ), trinitromethanide (C(NO 2 ) 3 − ), nitroamide (NHNO 2 − ), and dinitroamide (N(NO 2 ) 2 − ) to improve oxygen balance and detonation performance. Designed salts show moderate detonation velocities (7.9–8.7 km/s) and pressures (23.8 − 33.1 GPa). The distribution of frontier molecular orbitals, molecular electrostatic surface potentials, QTAIM topological properties, and noncovalent interactions of designed salts were simulated to understand the electronic structures, charge distribution in molecules, hydrogen bonding, and other nonbond interactions. The predicted safety factor (SF) and impact sensitivity (H 50 ) of designed salts suggest their insensitivity to mechanical stimuli. This work explored the 7H,7′H-[6,6′-bi[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4]triazole]-3,3′,7,7′-tetramine as a suitable cationic component which could be promising and serve exemplarily in energetic materials.

Abstract:In order to broaden the study of energetic cations, a cation 3,5-diamino-4H-pyrazol-4-one oxime (DAPO) with good thermal stability was proposed, and its three salts were synthesized by a simple and efficient method. The structures of the three salts were verified by infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The thermal stabilities of the three salts were verified by differential scanning calorimetry and thermos-gravimetric analysis. DAPO-based energetic salts are analysed using a variety of theoretical techniques, such as 2D fingerprint, Hirshfeld surface, and non-covalent interaction. Among them, the energy properties of perchlorate (DAPOP) and picrate (DAPOT) were determined by EXPLO5 program combined with the measured density and enthalpy of formation. These compounds have high density, acceptable detonation performance, good thermal stability, and satisfactory sensitivity. The intermolecular interactions of the four compounds were studied by Hirshfeld surface and non-covalent interactions, indicating that hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions are the reasons for the extracellular properties of perchlorate (DAPOP) and picrate (DAPOT), indicating that DAPO is an optional nitrogen-rich cation for the design and synthesis of novel energetic materials with excellent properties.

Abstract:Various energetic salts (3a-f) were obtained from 1,3,5-tris[(2H-tetrazol-5-yl)methyl]isocyanurate (3), while N2,N4,N6-tri(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine (5) and N,N'-{6-[(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)amino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl}bis[N-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)nitramide] (6) were obtained from cyanuric chloride via a simple, efficient two-step synthetic route from inexpensive starting materials. Compounds 3a-f and 6 show excellent detonation properties (VOD = 7876-8832 m s-1, and DP = 20.73-30.0 GPa), a high nitrogen content (>62%), and high positive heats of formation (205.2-1888.9 kJ mol-1) with excellent thermostability and remarkable insensitivity.

Abstract:The transformation of energetic materials into metal salts can enhance their thermal stability. A series of high-energy metal salts comprising sodium ions (4), potassium ions (5), rubidium ions (6), and cesium ions (7) were synthesized based on (3-(dinitromethanidyl)-[1,2,4]triazolo[5,1-c][1,2,4](triazin-4-yl)(nitro)amide (DTT). The elemental composition and crystal structures of compound 5-7 were determined using techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystallographic studies showed that the metal salt crystals had structural stability, likely due to the incorporation of metal ions into the compound. The compounds 5-7 underwent rigorous testing using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), which validated their thermal stability. The incorporation of metal ions induced notable modifications to the crystal packing and overall structure, endowing the high-energy salts with advantageous properties such as density (1.907 - 2.477 g·cm−3), resistance to elevated temperatures (Td ≥ 270.39 °C) and good detonating properties. (D ≥ 7353 m/s, P ≥ 21.3 GPa).

Achieving Good Molecular Stability in Nitrogen-rich Salts Based on Polyamino Substituted Furazan-triazole

Abstract:Furazan has rarely been used as a building block in the development of energetic cations. In this study, polyamino-substituted furazan-triazole was explored as an energetic cation for the synthesis of energetic salts 3–6. All new compounds were characterized by infrared and NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The experimental results revealed that these salts have good thermal stabilities; the decomposition temperatures of these salts, except nitroformate 6, were over 200 °C. These salts (IS: 16–40 J; FS: 200–360 N) are more insensitive than RDX. The noncovalent interaction (NCI) and Hirshfeld surface analyses were performanced to comprehensively study their structure–property relationships. The good molecular stabilities of these salts can arise from (a) abundant π–π interactions on account of the planar furazan-triazole backbone and (b) an extensive hydrogen bonding network resulting from large amounts of amino groups. Abstract:Three novel energetic salts (2, 3, and 4) based on 3-amino-5-hydrazinopyrazole were synthesized and were fully characterized. The corresponding thermal and kinetic behaviors were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) for the first time. Accurate kinetic models based on the analysis were selected to describe the decomposition by applying an isoconversional methods and nonlinear regressions to data of DSC and the most probable mechanism function of decomposition for salts 2–4 were obtained. Their physicochemical properties, such as densities, heat of formation, detonation performances and mechanical sensitivities acquired from experimental measurements or theoretical calculations were investigated. The results show that the strong hydrogen bond interactions make energetic salts have high densities and good detonation properties while maintaining reasonable mechanical sensitivities. The energetic salts 2–4 show superior detonation performance than TNT or exhibit comparable detonation parameters with RDX while having more insensitive mechanical sensitivities and higher nitrogen contents. These properties provide them as promising energetic materials.

Abstract:The incorporation of both fuel and oxidizer properties into a single molecule to effectively improve the oxygen balance of energetic compounds has become one of the most acceptable strategies for the design of modern high-energy-density materials (HEDMs). To identify more powerful and less sensitive HEDMs with favorable oxygen balance, novel nitrogen- and oxygen-enriched dicationic 3,4-diaminotriazolium salts were prepared via the quaternization of 3,4-diamino-triazole with 4,4′-bis(nitramino)azofurazan and 4,4′-bis(nitramino)azoxyfurazan, and then fully characterized. These compounds exhibited favorable thermal stabilities with decomposition temperatures up to 216°C, high densities over 1.82 g•cm−3 as well as acceptable sensitivities. In addition, the two-dimensional fingerprint spectra based on Hirshfeld surface analysis were adopted to illustrate structure–property relationships. Based on the combination of experimentally determined densities and heats of formation calculated with Gaussian 03, the energetic properties were determined using the EXPLO5 v6.02 program. The newly synthesized ionic salts displayed excellent detonation properties (Vd, 9115-9220 m•s−1; P, 33.9-35.9 GPa), comparable to those of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX), thus highlighting their potential in energetic material applications.

Abstract:2-Amino-5-nitro-4-(tetrazol-5-yl)-1,2,3-triazole (HANTT), its corresponding energetic salts and a dimeric azo compound are successfully synthesized. Compared to 5-nitro-4-(tetrazol-5-yl)-1,2,3-triazole (H 2 NTT), the neutral N -amino compound HANTT exhibits excellent properties in many aspects, including a higher density ( ρ = 1.86 g cm –3 ), a better detonation performance ( D v = 8931 m s –1 , P = 32.2 GPa) and a higher thermal decomposition temperature ( T d = 237 °C). Among the prepared materials, the hydroxylammonium energetic salt exhibits the best detonation performance ( D v = 9096 m s –1 , P = 32.8 GPa) and an acceptable mechanical sensitivity ( IS = 12 J, FS = 144 N). HANTT, the energetic salts and the azo compound are fully characterized by infrared spectroscopy, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Abstract:Among energetic materials, there are two significant challenges facing researchers: 1) to develop ionic CHNO explosives with higher densities than their parent nonionic molecules and (2) to achieve a fine balance between high detonation performance and low sensitivity. We report a surprising energetic salt, hydroxylammonium 3-dinitromethanide-1,2,4-triazolone, that exhibits exceptional properties, viz., higher density, superior detonation performance, and improved thermal, impact, and friction stabilities, then those of its precursor, 3-dinitromethyl-1,2,4-triazolone. The solid-state structure features of the new energetic salt were investigated with X-ray diffraction which showed π-stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions that contribute to closer packing and higher density. According to the experimental results and theoretical analysis, the newly designed energetic salt also gives rise to a workable compromise in high detonation properties and desirable stabilities. These findings will enhance the future prospects for rational energetic materials design and commence a new chapter in this field.
