Abstract:Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3, BFO) submicron cubes and 3D BFO/graphene composite materials were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process. Large ultrathin anatase TiO 2 nanosheets with exposed {001} facets on graphene for enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

Abstract:Tailored synthesis of well-defined anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with a high percentage of reactive facets has attracted widespread attention due to the scientific and technological importance. Here, high-quality nanosized anatase ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets, mainly dominated by {001} facets, were grown on graphene nanosheets by a simple one-pot solvothermal synthetic route. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared TiO2/graphene composites for degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible-light irradiation at lambda >= 400 nm was investigated. The results show that TiO2/graphene nanocomposites have a higher photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2 and P25. This enhanced photocatalytic activity suggests that the photoinduced electrons in TiO2 prefer transferring to the graphene efficiently. As a consequence, the electron transfer via Ti-O-C between TiO2 and C interaction greatly retards the recombination of photoinduced charge carriers and prolongs the carrier lifetime, thus contributing to the enhancement of photocatalytic performance. The amount of graphene is an important factor affecting the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/graphene nanocomposites. The optimum amount of graphene is ca. 1 wt %, at which the TiO2/graphene sample displays the highest reactivity. Furthermore, the photodegradation rate does not show an obvious decrease during five successive cycles, indicating that our TiO2/graphene nanocomposites are stable visible-light photocatalysts.

Abstract:Novel graphene-TiO2 (GR-TiO2) composite photocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal method. During the hydrothermal process, both the reduction of graphene oxide and loading of TiO2 nanoparticles on graphene were achieved. The structure, surface morphology, chemical composition and optical properties of composites were studied using XRD, TEM, XPS, DRS and PL spectroscopy. The absorption edge of TiO2 shifted to visible-light region with increasing amount of graphene in the composite samples. The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was carried out using graphene-TiO2 composite catalysts in order to study the photocatalytic efficiency. The results showed that GR-TiO2 composites can efficiently photodegrade MO, showing an enhanced photocatalytic activity over pure TiO2 under visible-light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite catalysts might be attributed to great adsorptivity of dyes, extended light absorption range and efficient charge separation due to giant pi-conjugation system and two-dimensional planar structure of graphene. Abstract:La/TiO2-graphene composites used as photocatalyst were prepared by two-step hydrothermal method. The as-prepared composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The results of optical properties of La/TiO2-graphene composites exhibit extended light absorption in visible-light region and possess better charge separation capability as compared to pure TiO2. The photocatalytic activity measurement demonstrate that La/TiO2-graphene composites exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation under visible-light irradiation compared to pure TiO2, which was attributed to greater adsorptivity of dyes, extended light absorption and increased charge separation efficiency due to excellent electrical properties of graphene and the large surface contact between graphene and La/TiO2 nanoparticles.

Abstract:Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs) decorated with high-quantum-yield titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposite are synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Photoluminescence characterization shows that S-GQDs exhibit stronger absorption peaks at ultraviolet (UV) region than GQDs. Photocatalytic activity of the obtained S-GQD/TiO2 nanocomposite reaches 70% in 8 min; this activity is significantly enhanced compared with those of GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2. Improved UV light absorption and effective transfer of photogenerated electrons can be attributed to integration of S-GQDs with TiO2 in a cladding manner. The present work provides a new approach for development of attractive GQD-based nanocomposites with controllable structures and photocatalytic performance.
Au/TiO2/Graphene Composite with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity Under Both UV and Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Au/TiO2/graphene composite was synthesized by the combination of electrostatic attraction and photo-reduction method. In the composite, graphene sheets act as an adsorption site for dye molecules to provide a high concentration of dye near to the TiO2 and Au nanoparticles (NPs), and work as an excellent electron transporter to separate photoinduced e−/h+ pairs. Under UV irradiation, photogenerated electrons of TiO2 are transferred effectively to Au NPs and graphene sheets, respectively, retarding the recombination of electron–hole pairs. Under visible light irradiation, the Au NPs are photo-excited due to the surface plasmon resonance effect, and charge separation is accomplished by the interfacial electron injection from the Au NPs to the conduction band of TiO2 and then transfer further to graphene sheets. As a result, compared with pure TiO2, Au/TiO2/graphene composite exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity for degradation of methylene blue under both UV and visible light irradiation, based on the synergistic effect of Au, graphene in contact with TiO2, allowing response to the visible light, effective separation of photoinduced charges, and better adsorption of the dye molecules.

Abstract:A series of BiFeO3/(N-doped) graphene composites are prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. BiFeO3/N-doped graphene shows photocatalytic performance superior to that of BiFeO3/graphene and pristine BiFeO3. The enhanced photo-degradation performance of BiFeO3/N-doped graphene are mainly attributable to the improved light absorbance of the composite, abundant active adsorption sites and high electrical charge mobility of N-doped graphene, and the downward band bending of BiFeO3 at the composite interface. In particular, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses reveal that the electron energy band of BiFeO3 is downward bent by 1.0 eV at the interface of BiFeO3/N-doped graphene, because of different work functions of both materials. This downward band bending facilitates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from BiFeO3 to N-doped graphene and prompts the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, leading eventually to the enhanced photocatalytic performance. Abstract:Graphene-BiFeO3 composites are synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal method and their photocatalytic performances are investigated under visible light irradiation. Bandgap engineering of BiFeO3-graphene composites is achieved by simply adjusting the concentration of OH groups during the hydrothermal treatment. XPS and Raman analysis indicate that enhanced coupling between BiFeO3 nanoparticles and graphene is achieved by the formation of Fe-O-C bonds, which is mediated by OH groups adsorbed on the surface of graphene. The band gaps of the composites could be successfully tuned from 1.78 eV-2.24 eV, giving rise to high photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. This may be of significance in understanding the mechanism of the coupling between graphene and semiconductor oxides which are currently being intensively investigated as photocatalysts.

Abstract:In this work, a novel photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic activities was developed by the combination of TiO2 with graphene oxide (GO). GO was firstly prepared by the chemical oxidation of graphite through Hummers method and the subsequent dispersion and exfoliation in water. Then, GO and P25 nanoparticles (commercial TiO2) were used as raw materials to synthesize TiO2/graphene (TiO2/GE) nanocomposites by using a one-step solvothermal method. TEM images clearly showed that TiO2 nanomaterials (the size of about 15~20 nm) were distributed well onto the two-dimensional (2D) graphene sheets, indicating the formation of TiO2/GE nanocomposites. XRD results indicated that TiO2/GE nanocomposites exhibited TiO2 crystalline phase structure. Meanwhile, it was demonstrated from the methylene blue (MB) photodegradation results that TiO2/GE nanocomposites possessed excellent photocatalytic activities with potential applications.

Abstract:Cu-doped TiO2/graphene (Cu-TiO2/GR) composites were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The coating of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles on the whole graphene was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) showed that the resulting Cu-TiO2/GR composites exhibited extended light absorption in visible-light region compared with pure TiO2. Photoluminescence emission spectra of Cu-TiO2/GR composites showed better charge separation capability as compared to Cu/TiO2 and pure TiO2. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye under visible-light irradiation. The results demonstrate that Cu-TiO2/GR composite can effectively photodegrade MO, and show an excellent photocatalytic enhancement over pure TiO2. It was concluded that the synergistic effects of the great adsorptivity of dyes, extended light absorption range and efficient charge separation played a significant role for the enhancement of photoactivity of Cu-TiO2/GR composite catalyst. Abstract:g-C3N4 and Bi2O3 were successfully incorporated into TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-NT) to produce a composite nanotube material designated as g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity under visible light irradiation with respect to bleaching of methylene blue (MB) and degradation of phenol were determined. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the composite material, g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT, was red-shifted toward a narrower band gap energy (E-g). The valence band (VB) of g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT was shifted to a more positive potential resulting in an increased driving force for water oxidation. The photocurrent generated by g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NTs was approximately 15 times higher and the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE at lambda = 400 nm) was higher than that of the naked TiO2-NTs. This response is attributed to increasing the lifetimes of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. A significantly higher PEC response in terms of the bleaching of MB was observed on g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT. The roles of improved charge separation and subsequent higher electron-transfer efficiencies for in g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT electrodes were examined.
Significant Enhancement in the Visible Light Photocatalytic Properties of BiFeO3–graphene Nanohybrids

Abstract:Graphene-based visible light photocatalysts have been actively pursued in recent years due to the high charge mobility of graphene and hence, the lower recombination rate of electron–hole pairs. BiFeO3 with a band gap in the visible range is considered a promising candidate as an oxide photocatalyst. In this contribution, BiFeO3–graphene nanohybrids are fabricated via facile hydrothermal treatments. The morphology and band structure of BiFeO3 are modulated by graphene. Nanohybrids with BiFeO3 nanocrystallites of ∼100 nm uniformly decorated on graphene nanosheets are successfully synthesized, which exhibit a band gap of ∼1.78 eV. Chemical bonding between BiFeO3 and graphene is characterized by XPS analysis. Significant enhancement in the visible light photocatalytic performance is achieved in the BiFeO3–graphene nanohybrids. The rate for the photo-degradation of Congo Red under visible light is six times that for BiFeO3 particles, which is attributed to the combined effects of modulated band gap and covalent bonding between BiFeO3 and graphene.
Graphene Quantum Dots Modified Mesoporous Graphite Carbon Nitride with Significant Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Hydroxyl-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) composites were fabricated through electrostatic interactions. A variety of techniques were applied to discuss systematic effect on the morphology, optical, electronic properties and structure of GQDs/mpg-C3N4 composites. Remarkably, the 0.5 wt% GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure mpg-C3N4 by using rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of GQDs on the surface of mpg-C3N4 and intimate contact between the two materials contributed to the enhanced activity. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests both certified that the GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites can generate more center dot O-2(-) species and a small fraction of holes for photocatalytic degradation. Visible Light Active Dye-sensitizing Titanium Dioxide /Graphene Composites with Excellent Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:TiO2/rGO (TG) composites were synthesized using a hydrothermal reduction method, with titanium dioxide and graphene as the starting materials. Subsequently, dye-sensitizing titanium dioxide/graphene photocatalytic composites, named as DTG and APTG, were prepared by covalently attaching C.I. direct black 17 or C.I. acid violet 3 dye onto TG. The composites were characterized using FTIR, TEM, UV-vis DRS, EDS, and Raman spectroscopy technologies. The EDS surface scanning results of APTG and D2.70TG composites have shown that Ti and S atoms are uniformly distributed on the graphene sheets. The presence of characteristic peaks for S2p and N1s near 166 eV and 399 eV in D2.70TG and APTG were intensified compared to TG. The grafting rate reached its peak when the amount of C.I. Direct Black 17 was 2.70 and the fixed TG was 0.1g. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy study results demonstrated a shift in the response range to visible light after dye modification for DTGs and APTG. Photocatalytic experiments showed that D2.70TG was capable of removing over 99% of MB within 1 hour. Furthermore, after 5 cycles of photocatalytic experiments, the removal rate of MB remained above 95%.

Abstract:AbstractPhotoactive nanomaterials constitute an emerging field in nanotechnology, finding an extensive array of applications spanning diverse areas, including electronics and photovoltaic devices, solar fuel cells, wastewater treatment, etc. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), in its thin-film form, has been exhaustively surveyed as potential photocatalysts for environmental remediation owing to its innocuousness, stability, and photocatalytic characteristics when subjected to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. However, TiO2 has some shortcomings associated with a large bandgap value of around 3.2 eV, making it less efficient in the visible spectral range. TiO2 is often consolidated with various carbon nanomaterials to overcome this limitation and enhance its efficiency. Graphene, a 2-dimensional allotrope of carbon with a bandgap tuned between 0 and 0.25 eV, exhibits unique properties, making it an attractive candidate to augment the photoactivity of semiconductor (SC) oxides. Encapsulating graphene oxide onto TiO2 nanospheres demonstrates intensified photocatalytic properties and exceptional recyclability for the degeneration of certain dyes, including Rhodamine B. This review encompasses various techniques to synthesize graphene-based TiO2 photoactive composites, emphasizing graphene capsulized hollow titania nanospheres, nanofibers, core/shell, and reduced graphene oxide-TiO2-based nanocomposites. It also consolidates the application of the aforestated nanocomposites for the disintegration of various synthetic dyes, proving efficacious for water decontamination and degradation of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, graphene-based TiO2 nanocomposites used as lithium (Li)-ion batteries manifesting substantial electrochemical performance and solar fuel cells for energy production are discussed here.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Graphene oxide/TiO2 composites were prepared by using TiCl 3 and graphene oxide as reactants. The concentration of graphene oxide in starting solution played an important role in photoelectronic and photocatalytic performance of graphene oxide/TiO2 composites. Either a p-type or n-type semiconductor was formed by graphene oxide in graphene oxide/TiO2 composites. These semiconductors could be excited by visible light with wavelengths longer than 510 nm and acted as sensitizer in graphene oxide/TiO2 composites. Visible-light driven photocatalytic performance of graphene oxide/TiO2 composites in degradation of methyl orange was also studied. Crystalline quality and chemical states of carbon elements from graphene oxide in graphene oxide/TiO2 composites depended on the concentration of graphene oxide in the starting solution. This study shows a possible way to fabricate graphene oxide/semiconductor composites with different properties by using a tunable semiconductor conductivity type of graphene oxide. © 2010 American Chemical Society.
Synergistic effect on the visible light activity of Ti3+ doped TiO2 nanorods/boron doped graphene composite

Abstract:TiO2/graphene (TiO2-x/GR) composites, which are Ti(3+) self-doped TiO2 nanorods decorated on boron doped graphene sheets, were synthesized via a simple one-step hydrothermal method using low-cost NaBH4 as both a reducing agent and a boron dopant on graphene. The resulting TiO2 nanorods were about 200 nm in length with exposed (100) and (010) facets. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Raman, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The XRD results suggest that the prepared samples have an anatase crystalline structure. All of the composites tested exhibited improved photocatalytic activities as measured by the degradation of methylene blue and phenol under visible light irradiation. This improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect of Ti(3+) self-doping on TiO2 nanorods and boron doping on graphene.

Abstract:Nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal method using citric acid and urea as the carbon and nitrogen precursors, respectively. Due to different post-treatment processes, the obtained NGQDs with different surface modifications exhibited blue light emission, while their visible-light absorption was obviously different. To further understand the roles of nitrogen dopants and N-containing surface groups of NGQDs in the photocatalytic performance, their corresponding composites with TiO2 were utilized to degrade RhB solutions under visible-light irradiation. A series of characterization and photocatalytic performance tests were carried out, which demonstrated that NGQDs play a significant role in enhancing visible-light driven photocatalytic activity and the carrier separation process. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the NGQDs/TiO2 composites can possibly be attributed to an enhanced visible light absorption ability, and an improved separation and transfer rate of photogenerated carriers.

Abstract:Given the versatility and value of the semiconductor composites for photocatalysis, we reported a new, friendly environment, high specific surface area material of the graphene quantum dots/hollow titanium dioxide nanosphere (GQDs/H-TiO2) composites which are synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method. GQDs (~ 5 nm) exhibit highly photoluminescent and widely visible light absorption properties. H-TiO2 has high surface area and abundant exposed active sites for photocatalysis. The research demonstrates that GQDs coupled on H-TiO2 can effectively enlarge the light absorption of the H-TiO2 to visible region (~ 650 nm) and enhance the electron–hole pair separation efficiency of GQDs/H-TiO2 composites owing to GQDs acting as an electron repository and electron transport bridge. In our delight, the photocurrent enhancement of newly prepared GQDs-3.0/H-TiO2 composite electrode was almost 3.5 times higher in comparison with that in pure H-TiO2 electrode at an applied voltage of 0.5 V using Na2SO4 (0.5 M) solution as the electrolyte. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the prepared GQDs-3.0/H-TiO2 (96.9%) on the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) was also significantly enhanced compared with that of pure H-TiO2 (33.3%) after 180 min. The protocol is suitable not only for the GQDs-modified semiconductors photocatalysts but also provides further insights to apply GQDs to other energy conversion devices.
