Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis of Co2SnO4@C core-shell nanostructures through a simple glucose hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach. The as-synthesized Co2SnO4@C core-shell nanostructures have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance compared to pure Co 2SnO4 nanocrystals. Abstract:Hierarchical CoxMn3-xO4 array micro-/nanostructures with tunable morphology and composition have been grown on conductive stainless steel with robust adhesion by a facile solvothermal route and a subsequent annealing treatment. By simply controlling the volume ratio of components in the mixed solvent, the morphology of the products can be tailored from hierarchical nanowires to nanosheets. Benefitting from the unique structural features, the resultant CoMn2O4 nanowires and MnCo2O4 nanosheets exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with remarkable specific capacities (540-207 mA h g(-1)) at various current rates (1-10 C) and good cycling stability for highly reversible lithium storage. The enhanced electrochemical performance suggests their promising use as integrated binder-free electrodes for microscale lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach for the synthesis of Co3O4@SnO2@C core-shell nanorods. The as-synthesized Co3O4@SnO2@ C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance and enhanced power capability. Both Co3O4 and SnO2 are electrochemically active materials, and the hybridization of Co3O4 and SnO2 into an integrated core-shell nanorod structure makes them an elegant synergistic effect when participating in the lithium-ion charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon matrix has good volume buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, which may be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance.

Abstract:The present study reports a straightforward template-free route for the synthesis of core-shell Co@CoO nanocomposites by the controlled reduction of Co(3)O(4) nanospheres. The target Co@CoO nanoparticles consist of an unsealed hollow porous CoO shell with a metal Co core, in which the outer porous CoO shell as the active anode material can be fully in contact with the electrolyte. The void within the particles provides a remarkable buffer to tolerate volume changes of the electrode materials during the insertion and extraction of lithium. Most importantly, the inner nanosized metal Co core gives a new impetus to the reversible decomposition of Li(2)O due to its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the exposed metal Co portion outside the nanoshells provides a favorable electrical contact between adjacent particles and greatly improves the efficiency of the electronic connection between the active material and the current collector. The Co@CoO nanocomposite maintains an excellent reversible capacity over 800 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles with an initial coulombic efficiency of 74.2%, which is much higher than that of pure CoO (67.8%). This superior electrochemical performance is closely related to the unique composition and nanostructure of the electrode material. Notably, it is the first case of a hybrid-structured Co@CoO anode material derived from the reduction process from oxide precursors. Such a conclusion may be advantageously used to guide the design of a wide range of nanostructured metal oxides.

Abstract:Rational construction of anode material architecture to afford excellent cycling stability, fast rate capacity, and large specific capacity is essential to promote further development of lithium-ion batteries in commercial applications. In this work, we propose a facile strategy to anchor ultrafine β-Mo2C nanoparticles in N-doped porous carbon skeleton (β-Mo2C@NC) using a scalable salt-template method. The well-defined and abundant hierarchical porous structure of β-Mo2C@NC can not only significantly enhance the electron/ion transfer but also markedly increase the specific surface area to effectively expose the electrochemically accessible active sites. Besides, the N-doped carbon matrix can turn the d-orbital electrons of the Mo to boost the electron transportation as well as distribute active sites to buffer the volume change of Mo2C and provide conductive pathways during discharge/charge cycles. As a result, the as-prepared β-Mo2C@NC displays excellent lithium storage performance in terms of 1701.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles and a large capacity of 816.47 mA h g-1 at 2.0 A g-1 after 500 cycles. The above results distinctly demonstrate that the β-Mo2C@NC composite has potential application as anode materials in high-performance energy storage devices.
Phase Structure Engineering of MnCo2Ox Within Electrospun Carbon Nanofibers Towards High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:Metal oxides are prospective alternative anode materials to the commercial graphite for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), while their practical application is seriously hampered by their poor conductivities and large volume changes. Herein, we report the controllable synthesis of amorphous/crystalline MnCo2Ox nanoparticles within porous carbon nanofibers (marked as MCO@CNFs) through a facile electrospinning strategy and subsequent annealing reactions. The phase structures from Co to MnOx amorphous MnCo2Ox and crystalline MnCo2O4.5 can be readily tuned by thermal reduction/oxidation under controlled atmosphere and temperature. When examined as anode for LIBs, the optimized MCO@CNFs delivers a high stable capacity of 780.3 mA h g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 250 cycles, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of the distinctive amorphous structure and defective carbon nanofiber matrices. Specifically, the amorphous structure with rich defects offers more reactive sites and multiple pathways for the Li+ diffusion, while carbon hybridization sufficiently improves the electrode conductivities as well as buffers the volume changes. More importantly, we demonstrate a convenient synthesis strategy to control the metalto-oxide structure evolution within carbon matrices, which is of great importance in exploring highperformance electrodes for next generation LIBs. Abstract:Although manganese oxide-based materials possess excellent electrochemical performance potential, their low conductivity and unstable capacity during extended cycling prevent their seamless integration into commercial battery applications. In this study, MnO-Co@C cubes, which possess exceptional electrochemical properties due to their hierarchical mesoporous structure, were successfully synthesized as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The MnO-Co microcubes are enclosed and cross-linked through biomineralization-derived carbon with a three-dimensional interconnected network, mitigating the volumetric expansion of active substances upon the insertion of lithium ions (Li+). The incorporation of cobalt not only boosts the rate capability and specific capacity, but also acts as a protective measure to prevent MnO from further oxidizing to a higher valence state, thereby guaranteeing ultra-stable long-term cycling performance. Due to the distinctive hierarchical mesoporous structure and the advantageous properties of the Co-Mn–O synergies, the MnO-Co@C electrode exhibited a reversible specific capacity of 1087.0 mAh g−1 following 200 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g−1. Furthermore, it demonstrated remarkable cycling stability, maintaining a capacity of 799.6 mAh g−1 even after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1 without any significant capacity degradation. This innovative cube-shaped material introduces a revolutionary fabrication methodology and offers profound insights into MnO-based materials and various metal oxides, positioning them as promising anode candidates for the achievement of superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Confining Transition metal oxides (TMOs) nanoparticles in porous carbon is an effective strategy to improve its electrochemical performance. Herein, the large grain size Co-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) was used as precursor to synthesize core-shell structure of Co 3 O 4 encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (denoted as L-Co 3 O 4 @NC). The in-situ synthesized L-Co 3 O 4 @NC exhibits a unique interconnected and hierarchical porous structure. Owing to the unique structu Line14ral merits including fast charge transmission and Li + diffusion, effectively accommodate the volume change, and promote the access of Li + , the L-Co 3 O 4 @NC exhibits excellent lithium storage performance in terms of high specific capacity (1389 mAh g −1 at 0.1A g −1 after 50 cycles), enhanced rate capability (1373, 1182 and 945 mAh g −1 at 0.5, 1 and 2 A g −1 , respectively), and cycling stability at large current density (1183 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 960 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 after 200 cycles), which outperforms most of recently reported Co 3 O 4 based electrodes. This work provides a new avenue for developing Co-based anode materials with high performance in energy storage field.

Abstract:A facile method is presented for the large-scale preparation of rationally designed mesocrystalline MnO@carbon core-shell nanowires with a jointed appearance. The nanostructures have a unique arrangement of internally encapsulated highly oriented and interconnected MnO nanorods and graphitized carbon layers forming an external coating. Based on a comparison and analysis of the crystal structures of MnOOH, Mn2O3, and MnO@C, we propose a sequential topotactic transformation of the corresponding precursors to the products. Very interestingly, the individual mesoporous single-crystalline MnO nanorods are strongly interconnected and maintain the same crystallographic orientation, which is a typical feature of mesocrystals. When tested for their applicability to Li-ion batteries (LIB), the MnO@carbon core-shell nanowires showed excellent capacity retention, superior cycling performance, and high rate capability. Specifically, the MnO@carbon core-shell nanostructures could deliver reversible capacities as high as 801mAhg(-1) at a high current density of 500mAg(-1), with excellent electrochemical stability after testing over 200 cycles, indicating their potential application in LIBs. The remarkable electrochemical performance can mainly be attributed to the highly uniform carbon layer around the MnO nanowires, which is not only effective in buffering the structural strain and volume variations of anodes during repeated electrochemical reactions, but also greatly enhances the conductivity of the electrode material. Our results confirm the feasibility of using these rationally designed composite materials for practical applications. The present strategy is simple but very effective, and appears to be sufficiently versatile to be extended to other high-capacity electrode materials with large volume variations and low electrical conductivities.

Abstract:Multi-shell transition metal oxide hollow spheres show great potential for applications in energy storage because of their unique multilayered hollow structure with large specific surface area, short electron and charge transport paths, and structural stability. In this paper, the controlled synthesis of NiCo2O4, MnCo2O4, NiMn2O4 multi-shell layer structures was achieved by using the solvothermal method. As the anode materials for Li-ion batteries, the three multi-shell structures maintained good stability after 650 long cycles in the cyclic charge/discharge test. The in-situ transmisssion electron microscope characterization combined with cyclic voltammetry tests demonstrated that the three anode materials NiCo2O4, MnCo2O4 and NiMn2O4 have similar charge/discharge transition mechanisms, and the multi-shell structure can effectively buffer the volume expansion and structural collapse during lithium embedding/delithiation to ensure the stability of the electrode structure and cycling performance. The research results can provide effective guidance for the synathesis and charging/discharging mechanism of multi-shell metal oxide lithium-ion battery anode materials.

MnCo2O4 Nanospheres for Improved Lithium Storage Performance

Abstract:Mesoporous MnCo2O4 nanospheres with an average diameter of approximately 480 nm have been synthesized by a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted solvothermal method followed by thermal annealing. MnCo2O4 nanospheres consist of many nanoparticles having sizes in range of 20-50 nm, the specific area of the sample being 24.4 m(2) g(-1). When used as the anode material for lithium ion batteries, the mesoporous MnCO2O4 nanospheres show not only an excellent cycling stability, but also an outstanding rate capability. More specially, the discharge capacities of 749.1 and 629.6 mA h g(-1) can be retained at current densities of 200 and 400 mA g(-1) after 50 cycles, respectively. In addition, the average discharge capacities of 1013.8, 827.1, 770.6, 733.3, 697.3, 651.4 and 522.4 mA h g(-1) could be observed at current densities of 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 2000 mA g(-1), respectively. The improved cycling stability and rate capability can be ascribed to two unique structural features of mesoporous MnCo2O4 nanospheres: namely, the mesoporous nature of electrode materials which can help to reduce the volume variation during repeated lithiation/delithiation processes, and the nanostructure which can provide a shortened Li+ transmission path. The current synthesis approach can be easily spread to prepare other binary metal oxides, including Co-free anode materials.

Abstract:Mixed metal vanadate oxides are promising superior anode materials for lithium ion batteries due to their high specific capacities, improved cycling performance and excellent rate properties. In this work, we demonstrate a facile and controllable synthesis of solid Co3V2O8 micro-particles with different morphologies through a hydrothermal method. By controlling the reaction time, either Co3V2O8 microplates or micro-pencils could be fabricated. Characterization via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated the pure phase and solid morphology of the Co3V2O8 micropencils. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the products obtained at different stages clearly revealed the formation process of the Co3V2O8 micro-pencils. Electrochemical measurements of the Co3V2O8 micro-pencils showed an excellent lithium storage capacity (1137 mA h g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1)), good cycling retention (similar to 670 mA h g(-1) after 330 cycles), desirable coulombic efficiency (similar to 100% for 350 cycles) and notable rate capability (300 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)). The improved electrochemical performances of the solid Co3V2O8 micro-pencils indicate their great potential as high-performance anode materials for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides are regarded as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities compared with commercial graphite. Unfortunately, the implementation of such novel anodes is hampered by their large volume changes during the Li+ insertion and extraction process and their low electric conductivities. Herein, we report a specifically designed anode architecture to overcome such problems, that is, mesoporous peapod-like Co3O4@ carbon nanotube arrays, which are constructed through a controllable nanocasting process. Co3O4 nanoparticles are confined exclusively in the intratubular pores of the nanotube arrays. The pores between the nanotubes are open, and thus render the Co3O4 nanoparticles accessible for effective electrolyte diffusion. Moreover, the carbon nanotubes act as a conductive network. As a result, the peapod-like Co3O4@carbon nanotube electrode shows a high specific capacity, excellent rate capacity, and very good cycling performance.

Abstract:In this study, novel core-shell ellipsoidal MnCo2O4 powders with desired micro/nano-structure and a unique concentration gradient have been synthesized as anode material for Li-ion batteries. The special porous ellipsoid (2.5-4.5 μm in the long axis, 1.5-2.5 μm in the short axis, 200-300 nm in the thickness of shell) is built up by irregular nanoparticles attached to each other, and corresponding to the ellipsoid with concentration gradient, the Co/Mn atomic ratios of core and shell are about 1.76:1 and 2.34:1, respectively. The good performance, including high initial discharge capacities (1433.3 mAhg(-1) at 0.1 Ag(-1) and 1248.4 mAhg(-1) at 0.4 Ag(-1)), advanced capacity retention (∼900.0 mAhg(-1) after 60 cycles at 0.1 Ag(-1)), and fair rate performance (∼620.0 mAhg(-1) after 50 cycles at 0.4 Ag(-1)) has been measured by the battery test. Remarkably, the ellipsoidal shape and core-shell microstructure with concentration gradient are still maintained after 70 cycles of charge/discharge at 0.1 Ag(-1).

Abstract:Manganese monoxide (MnO) is a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries, but it often shows poor electrochemical performance due to some inevitable drawbacks including intrinsic low electrical conductivity, poor stability, and severe polarization. In this work, a 1D core-shell MnO@S, N co-doped carbon material (MnO@SNC) was obtained by pyrolysis of MnO2@PPy precursor at 600 degrees C in N-2 atmosphere. When evaluated as an anode for lithium ion batteries, the unique structure and composition advantages endow the as-formed material with excellent lithium storage performance in terms of high specific capacity (955.5 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 500 mA g(-1)), long-term cycling stability (up to 500 cycles), and superior rate capability (458.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1)). The outstanding electrochemical performance could be attributed to the unique 1D core-shell structure, abundant graphited carbon and MnO nanorods.
Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of Core-Shell Structured LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Microspheres for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:The 5 V-cathode material LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 microspheres with hollow, solid or core-shelled inner structures for the lithium-ion batteries are designed and fabricated by a multi-step synthesis procedure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) are employed to characterize the microstructures. Compared with the hollow and solid inner structures, the core-shell structured LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 exhibits excellent cycling stability and outstanding rate performance, which delivers a discharge capacity of 111.5 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 1 C, and 98 mA h g−1 at 8 C, respectively. Further analyses with cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrate that the core-shell structure can provide structural stability and shortened lithium diffusion path at both room and elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Core-shell structured material consisting of Co@Co3O4 core encapsulated in carbon nano-onions (CNOs) shell using 1-hexyl-3-methyl imidazolium dilyanamide ([HMIm]N(CN)2) as carbon source were synthesized by high-temperature carbonization and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidation. In the process of high-temperature carbonization, cobalt ions were in-situ reduced to metallic cobalt, producing core-shell structured Co@CNOs. Subsequently, Co@Co3O4@CNOs was obtained using H2O2 oxidation, in which parts of the metallic cobalt were in-situ oxidized to Co3O4, and simultaneously the carbon material was not lost. The structural characterizations indicating that the Co@Co3O4@CNOs was composed of three crystalline phases, with a higher degree of graphitization and a larger specific surface area. When applied to lithium-ion batteries anode, Co@Co3O4@CNOs showed superior reversible capacity (865 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 0.5C) and rate performance (403 mAh g−1 after 1500 cycles at 10C). Its superior electrochemical performance was attributed to CNOs, nitrogen doping, rich mesopores, and the synergistic effect between Co3O4 and conductive metallic cobalt, uniformly dispersed Co@Co3O4 not only have excellent structural stability but also have improved electrical conductivity and ion transfer.

Abstract:Natural macromolecule amylose (AM) is employed to deoxygenate few-layered graphene oxide (GO) and modulate the surface interaction between GO sheets and Co2+ ions under mild hydrothermal conditions. The obtained Co2+ ions and AM molecule jointly decorated reduced graphene oxide (Co-AM/RGO) sample is further utilized to synthesize both anode and cathode materials with controlled microstructures. To synthesize anode material, the Co-AM/RGO can be directly converted to a hierarchical AM pyrolyzed carbon and RGO supported cobalt monoxide nanocomposite (CoO@AMC/RGO) after a simple inert gas protected thermal treatment. To synthesize cathode material, a carbon coated nano-sized lithium cobalt oxide sample (LiCoO2/C, LCO/C) can be obtained after a solid-state reaction in air by mixing lithium salt with the Co-AM/RGO. The CoO and LCO nanocrystals with significantly controlled sizes are well dispersed in the carbon matrices. The CoO@AMC/RGO anode shows a high reversible capacity of 785.25 mAh·g−1 after 500 cycles at 200 mA·g−1 and 608.25 mAh·g−1 after 700 cycles at 1000 mA·g−1, while the LCO/C cathode delivers a superior reversible capacity of 140.91 mAh·g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA·g−1 with a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V. This work provides a new perspective for controllable engineering of electrode materials with enhanced lithium-ion storage performances.

Abstract:Co3O4 is a potential high-capacity anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but it usually has poor cycling stability due to its enormous volume variation during the conversion reaction process. A protection strategy has been developed to enhance the electrode performance of Co3O4 through construction of Co3O4@amorphous-TiO2 (Co3O4@a-TiO2) core–shell nanostructures with controllable pore size, realized by precisely regulating the volume ratio of ethanol to water. To our knowledge, this is the first time to use core–shell Co3O4@a-TiO2 as the anode material for the lithium-ion batteries. Noteworthy, electrochemical performances of the materials were found to be strongly correlated with their porous structures. With the excellent stability of TiO2 sheath, high capacity of Co3O4 core, and the optimized porous size, these unique Co3O4@a-TiO2 core–shell microcubes exhibit high capacity, long cycle life and good rate capability as advanced electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. A high reversible capacity of ∼800 mA h g−1 is obtained at 500 mA g−1, keeping the value stable after 60 cycles. We anticipate that such a demonstration presents a versatile method toward synthesizing other high-performance and multifunctional metal oxides@a-TiO2 nanocomposites for LIBs in near future.
