Abstract:An efficient protocol for post-functionalization of organo-imido polyoxometalates is developed via creating a remote tertiary "N" atom over the surface of organo-imido hexamolybdates and subsequently post-functionalizing it with the help of allyl or alkyl halides to afford stoichiometric, "in situ" crystalline products at moderate temperatures. The parent organo-imido product 2 and post-functionalized crystalline products 3 and 4 are compared for their solid state structures. The post-functionalization protocol introduced here allows the inclusion of the desired functional groups as remote reactive organic groups over a POM's highly negative surface. The in situ crystallization of post-functionalized products further guarantees an similar to 100% purity of final products, along with similar to 95% yield.

Abstract:A series of functional cation-regulated isopolymolybdate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, Na2H2[Mo4O12(C8H17O5N)2]·10H2O (1), Na2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·10H2O [M = Cu, 2; Ni, 3; Co, 4; Zn, 5; Bis-tris = 2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2″-nitrilotriethanol], and (NH4)2[M(Bis-tris)(H2O)]2[Mo7O24]·6H2O (M = Zn, 6; Cu, 7), were synthesized and characterized toward advanced molecular catalyst design. Compound 1 is a covalently bonded adduct, and its self-assembly process can be probed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Compounds 2-7 are polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrids containing classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations with Bis-tris ligands. All of these compounds showed remarkable catalytic effects for selective sulfide oxidation. To the best of our knowledge, compound 5 presents the best catalytic activity so far among the reported hybrid materials with common easily synthesized small-molecule POM clusters and also exhibits outstanding reliability. The conclusion of the catalytic effect is drawn from the results that Zn-based compounds have better catalytic effects than other transition-metal-containing compounds and the compound constructed by Na+ has higher catalytic activity than that constructed by NH4+. The mechanism studies show that the improvements of the catalytic performance are caused by the synergy between classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations. ESI-MS data and UV-vis spectra revealed that the POM anions can form intermediate peroxomolybdenum units during catalytic reaction. Further, the combination of the substrate thioanisole with complex cations was characterized by NMR experiments and UV-vis spectra. Thus, a new synergistic mechanism of anions and cations is proposed in which the activated thioanisole is used as a nucleophile to attack the peroxomolybdenum bonds, and this provides a new strategy in the design of reliable POM-based catalysts.

Abstract:Post-polymerization modification is a facile and efficient method for the generation of diverse functional polymers. Herein, polymer-based molecular arrays were obtained by using sequential modification. First, periodic polyketone P0 was synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of α,ω-diene M0. Oxime chemistry was employed in the functionalization of the ketone moieties of P0 using three commercially available alkoxyamine hydrochlorides. Finally, electrophilic alkoxyetherification, a four-component reaction, was employed in the modification of alkene groups on polymer main chains using N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), tetrahydrofuran, and fluorinated carboxylic acid. Complete conversion of reactive sites was observed in both steps, and the two modification reactions exhibited excellent compatibility. The thermal properties of the polymers as thermal stability, and glass transition and melting behaviours were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Abstract:Recently, the organic functionalization of polyoxometalates (POMs) has drawn increasing interest, and an easy and effective route to achieve organic derivatives is of great importance. Herein, the first reported synthesis of a tosyl ester derivative of the polyoxometalate (Bu4N)2[V6O13{(OCH2)3CCH2SO3C7H4}2]·2.5CH3CN (compound 1) was performed by using DMAP as an activating reagent and triethylamine as an HCl scavenger. The tosyl ester was transformed into an azide or halide group by using sodium azide or sodium bromide, respectively, as the nucleophilic agent. Two derivatives of POMs, (Bu4N)2[V6O13{(OCH2)3CCH2N3}2]·4CH3CN (compound 2) and (Bu4N)2[V6O13{(OCH2)3CCH2Br}2] (compound 3), were easily obtained. All the compounds were structurally and compositionally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, UV-Vis spectroscopy and TGA. This work provides a new route for the functional group transformation of organic derivatives of polyoxometalates.
Systematic Engineering of Single Substitution in Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks Toward High-Performance Catalysis.

Abstract:Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) exhibit great structural tunability and outstanding chemical stability, rendering them promising candidates for a wide range of practical applications. In this work, we synthesized a series of isostructural PCN-224 analogues functionalized by ethyl, bromo, chloro, and fluoro groups on the porphyrin unit, which allowed us to explicitly study the effects of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on catalytic performance in MOFs. Owing to the different electronic properties of ethyl, bromo, chloro, and fluoro substitutes, the molecular-level control over the chemical environment surrounding a catalytic center could be readily achieved in our MOFs. To investigate the effects of these substitutes on catalytic activity and selectivity, the oxidation of 3-methylpentane to corresponding alcohols and ketones was utilized as a model reaction. Within these five analogues of PCN-224, an extremely high turnover number of 7680 and turnover frequency of 10 240 h-1 was achieved by simply altering the substitutes on porphyrin rings. Moreover, a remarkable 99% selectivity of the tertiary alcohol over the five other possible by-products are realized. We demonstrate that this strategy can be used to efficiently screen a suitable peripheral environment around catalytic cores in MOFs for catalysis.
A New Strategy of Post-Polymerization Modification to Prepare Functionalized Poly(disubstituted Acetylenes)

Abstract:Two disubstituted acetylenes bearing a vinyl group at one end (M1 and M2) were synthesized and polymerized by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst. The expected poly(disubstituted acetylenes) PDSAs (P1 and P2) were obtained in high yields. Both P1 and P2 have reactive vinyl groups on their side chains, thus they were used as precursors to be subsequently modified with a mercapto compound through the thiol-ene click reaction to produce the novel PDSAs (P1S and P2S) in good yield. The chemical structures of the polymers were carefully characterized by standard spectroscopic methods such as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), NMR, NMR and FTIR techniques, and satisfactory data were collected. The post-polymerization modification of P1 took a long reaction time (3 days) to convert P1 to P1S because the ene-functionality at the end of side chain of P1 links to a saturated alkyl segment. By using an activated ene-functionality (alpha,beta-unsaturated vinyl), the modification of P2 to P2S took only 1 day under mild conditions. Moreover, the activated end-ene group allowed the post-polymerization modification of P2 by Michael addition, which was confirmed using butylamine as the representative amine compound and the characterization data indicated the validity of the expected P2N. The thermal analysis results indicated that the modified polymers were highly stable thermally with a decomposition temperature over at least 240 degrees C, except for P2N, which showed lower stability due to unstable imine groups. Meanwhile, it was found that the modified polymers P1S and P2S were fluorescent and showed similar emission efficiency to their precursors P1 and P2. These results indicated that the thiol-ene click reaction and Michael addition reaction are accessible routes for post-polymerization modification to generate novel functional PDSAs.

Abstract:Access to asymmetrically functionalised polyoxometalates is a grand challenge as it could lead to new molecular nanomaterials with multiple or modular functionality. Here, a simple "one‐pot" synthetic approach to the isolation of an asymmetrically functionalised organic‐inorganic hybrid Wells‐Dawson polyoxometalate in good yield is presented. The cluster bears two organophosphonate moieties with contrasting physical properties: a chelating metal‐binding group, and a long aliphatic chain unit that facilitates solvent‐dependent self‐assembly into soft nanostructures. The orthogonal properties of the modular system are effectively demonstrated by controlled assembly of POM‐based redox‐active nanoparticles. We propose that this simple, high‐yielding synthetic method is a promising new approach to the preparation of multi‐functional hybrid metal‐oxide clusters, supermolecules and soft‐nanomaterials.

Rational Design of Polynuclear Organometallic Assemblies from a Simple Heteromultifunctional Ligand.

Abstract:In modern coordination chemistry, supramolecular coordination complexes take advantage of ligand design to control the shapes and sizes of such architectures. Here we describe how to utilize starting building blocks and a multifunctional ligand to rationally design and synthesize different types of discrete assemblies. Using a hydroxamate ligand featuring two pair of chelating sites together with half-sandwich iridium and rhodium fragments, we were able to construct a series multinuclear organometallic macrocycles and cages through stepwise coordination-driven self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational work, show that selective coordination modes were ascribed to the significant electronic density differences of the two chelating sites, (O,O') and (N,N'). The results underline the advantages of the discrimination between soft and hard binding sites, and suggest that hydroxamic acids can be used as a versatile class of facile multifunctional scaffold for the construction of novel two-dimensional and three-dimensional architectures.

Abstract:The Anderson-type polyoxometalates (POMs) are one of the most important and widely developed groups of the POMs family. The covalent functionalization of Anderson POMs have attracted extensive attention and facilitated the broad applications of the resultant POM hybrids in catalysis, biology, energy materials and medicine. Among various synthetic methods for Anderson hybrids, the asymmetric functionalization represents one of the hottest and unique topic during the last decade. In the structure of the asymmetric Anderson hybrids, two different organic components are anchored onto each side of the Anderson cluster or only one side of the cluster is functionalized. Asymmetric funcatinoalization provides complexity into POM assemblies and merges multiple functions into one hybrid molecule, meanwhile, brings challenges of rational design and controllable synthetic strategies. In this review, the latest progress of the synthetic methods and applications of asymmetrically functionalized Anderson-type POMs are summarized according to the central heteroatom of the cluster, which includes Mn-, Cr-, Al- and other metal-templated Anderson POMs.

Functionalization of Pyridines at Remote Synthetic Landscapes via Undirected Metalation and Capture

Abstract:The undirected functionalization of pyridines at positions remote to the N-atom remains an outstanding problem in organic synthesis. The inherent challenges associated with overriding the strong directing influence of the embedded N-atom within pyridine was overcome through the use of n-butylsodium which provided us an avenue to generate 4-sodiopyridine over traditionally observed 2-metalated products when organolithium bases are utilized. The freshly generated 4- sodiopyrdine was found to undergo transition metal free alkylation reactions directly with a variety of primary organic halides bearing diverse functional groups. In addition, after transmetalation to zinc chloride a simple and efficient Negishi cross-coupling protocol was formulated for a variety of aromatic and heteroaromatic halides. The robustness of this protocol was demonstrated through the late-stage installation of 4-pyridyl fragments into a variety of complex active pharmaceutical ingredients including loratadine and prochlorperazine. This protocol not only unlocks a new avenue to prepare 4-subsituted pyridines but highlights the preparative advantages and differences of organosodium bases over their lithium counterparts.

A general and highly regioselective synthesis approach to multi-functionalized organoimido derivatives of Polyoxometalates

Abstract:Organoimidoylization of Polyoxometalates (POMs) can dramatically modify the electronic structures of POMs and gives rise to novel “value-adding” properties of the POMs for promising material applications including photo-electronic transformation and catalysis. To date, the preparation of multi-functionalized organoimido derivatives of POMs is generally conducted under strict condition and is time-consuming with limited yields. Herein, a series of regioselective polyorganoimido derivatives of POMs, ocatant - [Mo 6 O 13 (NAr) 3 ( μ 2 -NAr) 3 ] 2 − (Ar = phenyl ( 1 ), p -methoxyphenyl ( 2 ) and p -ethylphenyl ( 3 )), were synthesized with high selectivity and in good yields via a general and highly regioselective synthesis method, called as the one-octant synthesis protocol. The reaction was monitored by ESI-MS and the as-prepared products were studied by ESI-MS, IR, UV-Vis, EA, 1 HNMR, single crystal XRD analysis and DFT calculations. The one-octant synthesis protocol here may serve as an idea method to design novel nanoscale POM-based organic-inorganic multi-functional hybrids.

Abstract:Organically derivatised polyoxometalate (POM) clusters containing bromo or iodo groups can undergo ligand-free, Pd-catalysed Heck carbon-carbon coupling reactions with alkenes, with bromomagnesium phenylamide as a base (see scheme). This protocol offers a new route to organic-inorganic hybrid molecular materials in which POM clusters are covalently bonded with organic conjugated segments.

The catalyst can be separated from the reaction mixture and reused at least five times with superior activity.</p>

Abstract:Post-synthetic coordination modification has proven to be a general and powerful approach for the functionalization of porous coordination polymers or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Metal-azolate frameworks (MAFs) are an important subclass of MOFs. In this account, the progress in the coordination post-synthetic modifications of an exceptionally robust pillared-rod MAF, featuring mixed μ-chloride and μ3-triazolate bridges as the rods and linear bistriazolates as the pillars, and its structural analogues with different transition metal ions and/or expanded organic bridging ligands are summarized and discussed. Through removal of the terminal coordinated solvent molecules, redox of the metal ions, and exchange of the anionic inorganic bridging ligands in the rods, significantly enhanced performances can be realized in carbon dioxide capture, photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, electrolytic water oxidation and oxidation of ethylbenzene.

Abstract:Polyoxometalates substituted by noble metal cations (PdII, RuIII, IrIV) of general formula (Bu4N)n[P2W17M(OH2)O61] are prepared by refilling the vacant site of the lacunary precursor α2-K10P2W17O61. Both 31P- and 183W-n.m.r. studies provide convincing evidence for the above structural assignment. The u.v.-vis and i.r. spectra are consistent with the first row transition metal substituted homologues. Electrochemical investigations by cyclic voltammetry in MeCN revealed four reversible one-electron redox couples, which are ascribed to the tungsten(VI→V) process of the tungsten-oxo framework.
