Abstract:Five novel complexes with two pyridine substituted benzotriazole ligands, 1-(2-pyridyl)benzotriazole (L1) and 1-(4-pyridyl)benzotriazole (L2), [Zn(L-1)(2)Cl-2](1), [{Zn(L-1)(2)Cl-2} (C)(L1)2](2), [Zn(L-2)(2)Cl-2](3), [{Zn(L2)(H2O)(3)(mu(2)-SO4)}center dot H2O] (4), and [{Cd(L2)(H2O)(3)(mu(2)-SO4)}center dot H2O](5) were synthesized. The details of the structures were characterized by X-ray single crystal analysis, revealing that these complexes were assembled together via supramolecular interaction, such as, hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. Abstract:ABSRACT Metal-polypyridine complexes are the fascinating transition-metal-ion-based photosensitizers (PSs) in photocatalytic reactions, while, they often suffer from moderate photo-catalytic activity due to their low sunlight utilization efficiency and high carrier recombination rates. Herein, we employed the iron-terpyridine complex as the building block to develop a novel supramolecular complex assembly through π-π stacking interaction. The iron-terpyridine complexes served as a visible light harvesting center that harvested sunlight to generate electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the π-π stacking mode is conducive to formation the fast electron transport pathway in supramolecular complex assembly, which thus enhances the charge separation efficiency. As a result, the obtained supramolecular complex assembly was highly efficient and universal in the photocatalytic Phillips-Ladenburg reaction of o -phenylenediamine and aromatic aldehydes, giving a wide range of benzimidazoles with almost quantitative yields (90-98%) in air under visible light irradiation at room temperature. These results provide a new method to enhance the light harvesting and charge separation of metal-polypyridine complexes through supramolecular assembly. It provides a high effective photocatalyst to achieve green synthesis of benzimidazoles under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Herein, we report a novel trifluoromethanesulfonic acid vapor-assisted solid phase synthetic method to construct nanoporous covalent triazine frameworks with highly ordered hollow interconnected pores under mild reaction conditions. This unique solid state synthetic route allows not only the avoidance of undesired side reactions caused by traditional high temperature synthesis, but also the maintaining of defined and precise optical and electronic properties of the nonporous triazine frameworks. Promising photocatalytic activity of the polytriazine networks was demonstrated in the photoreduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol into 4-aminophenol under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:A new triazine-based conjugated polymer THT-TA was constructed with simple building blocks 2,4,6-trihydrazino-1,3,5-triazine (THT) and terephthalaldehyde (TA) via solvothermal reaction. The structural characterizations confirmed the successful synthesis of the polymer, and TEM images clearly revealed the sheet-like morphology. The 2D layered structure was further confirmed by XRD, and the semi-crystalline pattern was better fitted with a novel parallelogram framework rather than classic hexagonal framework. The optical band gap of THT-TA was 2.50 eV, and the frontier orbitals were delocalized across the framework from DFT calculation, validating that higher degree of conjugation was achieved from small monomers. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was successfully achieved with Pt as co-catalyst and sodium ascorbate as sacrificial agent under visible light (lambda > 420 nm), and the sample showed considerable stability in the long-term test for more than 200 h.

Abstract:AbstractFor metal‐free, organic conjugated polymer‐based photocatalysts, synthesis of defined nanostructures is still highly challenging. Here, we report the formation of covalent triazine framework (CTF) nanoparticles via a size‐controllable confined polymerization strategy. The uniform CTF nanoparticles exhibited significantly enhanced activity in the photocatalytic formation of dibenzofurans compared to the irregular bulk material. The optoelectronic properties of the nanometer‐sized CTFs could be easily tuned by copolymerizing small amounts of benzothiadiazole into the conjugated molecular network. This optimization of electronic properties led to a further increase in observed photocatalytic efficiency, resulting in total an 18‐fold enhancement compared to the bulk material. Full recyclability of the heterogeneous photocatalysts as well as catalytic activity in dehalogenation, hydroxylation and benzoimidazole formation reactions demonstrated the utility of the designed materials.

Abstract:Visible-light photosensitizers have emerged as a sustainable and environmentally friendly medium for organic transformation. Herein, we have developed a supramolecular strategy for manipulating visible-light photosensitization and photocatalytic efficiencies. With the elaborate manipulation of aggregated Pt(II)···Pt(II) interactions, the discrete tetranuclear Pt complexes not only show high binding affinity (Ka ∼ 106 M–1) but also feature bathochromic-shifted metal–metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions. Both factors are crucial for their 1O2 generation capability upon low-energy visible-light irradiation (λ ≥ 590 nm). More interestingly, when a terpyridine moiety is embedded in the structure of a supramolecular photosensitizer, breakup of tetranuclear Pt(II)···Pt(II) complexation can be realized upon addition of Zn(OTf)2. Abstract:As organic semiconductor materials gain increasing prominence in the realm of photocatalysis, two carbon-nitrogen materials, poly (heptazine imide) (PHI) and poly (triazine imide) (PTI), have garnered extensive attention and applications owing to their unique structure properties. This review elaborates on the distinctive physical and chemical features of PHI and PTI, emphasizing their formation mechanisms and the ensuing properties. Furthermore, it elucidates the intricate correlation between the energy band structures and various photocatalytic reactions. Additionally, the review outlines the primary synthetic strategies for constructing PHI and PTI, along with characterization techniques for their identification. It also summarizes the primary strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of PHI and PTI, whose advantages in various photocatalytic applications are discussed. Finally, it highlights the promising prospects and challenges pertaining to PHI and PTI as photocatalysts.

Abstract:The modulation of microstructures in conjugated polymers represents a viable strategy for enhancing photocatalytic efficiency, albeit hampered by complex processing techniques. Here, we present an uncomplicated, template-free method to synthesize polymeric photocatalysts, namely BCN( x )@PPy, featuring a hollow nanotube-nanocluster core–shell superstructure. This configuration is realized through intramolecular covalent crosslinking and synergistic intermolecular donor–acceptor (D − A) interactions between phenylene pyrene (PPy, D) nanotubes and poly([1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carbonitrile) (PBCN, A) nanoclusters. Interestingly, the optimized BCN2@PPy composite demonstrates remarkably enhanced performance for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, with an efficiency of 14.7-fold higher than that of unmodified PPy nanotubes. Experimental and density functional theory calculations revealed that BCN( x )@PPy composites are conducive to shortening photogenerated exciton migration, facilitating charge separation and transfer, reducing nanoclusters aggregation or re-stacking, and providing sufficient catalytically active sites, all contributing to the heightened efficiency in photocatalysis. These insights underscore the potential for precise molecular adjustments in conjugated polymers, advancing artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Four isostructural lanthanide coordination complexes based on 3,7-diamino-9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (dianionic, L) have been synthesized by hydrothermal method, namely [Er(L)(H2O)6]•[Er(H2O)8]•2L•8H2O (Er-L), [Tm(L)(H2O)6]•[Tm(H2O)8]•2L•8.5H2O (Tm-L), [Yb(L)(H2O)6]•[Yb(H2O)8]•2L•9H2O (Yb-L), [Lu(L)(H2O)6]•[Lu(H2O)8]•2L•9H2O (Lu-L). Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals the existence of both coordinated and free ligand L in the crystal structure. Versatile sulfonate groups on these distinct L ligands, together with very rich coordinated and lattice water molecules, form a lot of hydrogen-bonding motifs that contribute to the stabilization of the crystal packing. It is interesting that the ligands stack into columns through strong π-π interactions and the centroid-centroid distances are between 3.281 and 3.331 Å. These ligands are stacked in an alternate off-set mode to avoid the steric hindrance between the bulky sulfonate groups, generating a repeated structural unit involving six stacked ligands. These lanthanide complexes proved to be good heterogeneous photocatalyst for promoting the visible-light driving photooxidation reactions of diarylacetylenes and thioethers. The Er-L complex exhibited the best catalytic activity and showed good catalytic efficiency over a wide range of substrates for both reaction systems. The Er-L photocatalyst can be easily isolated by simple filtration as crystalline material upon completion of the photooxidation reaction without structure change, and can be recycled for at least five catalytic cycles with persistent catalytic efficiency without any need of activation or regeneration. This family of lanthanide complexes represent a category of promising heterogeneous photocatalysts in terms of green chemistry, with the potential of promoting organic transformations highly efficiently under the irradiation of visible light.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted growing interests as new material platform for a range of applications. In this study, a triazine-carbazole-based covalent organic framework (COF-TCZ) was designed as highly porous material with conjugated donor-acceptor networks, and feasibly synthesized by the Schiff condensation of 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tr ianiline (TAPB) and 9-(4-formylphenyl)-9H-carbazole-3,6-dicarbaldehyde (CZTA) under the solvothermal condition. Considering the effect of linkage, the imine-linked COF-TCZ was further oxidized to obtain an amide-linked covalent organic framework (COF-TCZ-O). The as-synthesized COFs show high crystallinity, good thermal and chemical stability, and excellent photoactive properties. Two π-conjugated triazine-carbazole-based COFs with tunable linkages are beneficial for light-harvesting capacity and charge separation efficiency, which are empolyed as photocatalysts for the oxidation reaction of N-aryltetrahydroisoquinoline. The COFs catalyst systems exhibit the outstanding photocatalytic performance with high conversion, photostability and recyclability. Photoelectrochemical tests were employed to examine the behavior of photogenerated charge carriers in photo-illumination system. The control experiments provide further insights into the nature of photocatalysis. In addition, the current research also provided a valuable approach for developing photofunctional COFs to meet challenge in achieving the great potential of COFs materials in organic conversion.

Abstract:Two novel N,N'-bicarbazole-based porous covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs; i.e., BC-CTF and Ph-BC-CTF) were readily prepared by mild trifluoromethanesulfonic acid-catalyzed synthesis. These two CTFs have comparable surface areas and chemical constitutions with the ionothermal frameworks but feature less energy penalty and better optical properties due to the avoidance of partial carbonization at high temperatures. The two CTFs exhibit excellent CO2 adsorption capacity thanks to the presence of nitrogen-rich bicarbazole, triazine skeletons, and high surface areas. Furthermore, BC-CTF and Ph-BC-CTF serve as highly efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for the degradation of rhodamine B and selective oxidation of thioanisoles to sulfoxides under visible light.
Regulation the reactive oxygen species on conjugated polymers for highly efficient photocatalysis

Abstract:The regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in photocatalytic processes remains insufficiently explored. Herein, three triazine-based conjugated polymers were designed to regulate ROS by tuning structures. Strong superoxide radical was generated together with hydrogen peroxide through the electron transfer from the photocatalysts to oxygen, when electron donor-acceptor (D-A) structures were constructed in the photocatalysts. By sharp contrast, singlet O2 that was generated via energy transfer was the dominant ROS on the photocatalyst with a symmetric structure. It was demonstrated that the separation of excitons in the D-A photocatalysts was much more efficient. By using the most efficient D-A photocatalyst, phenol was degraded completely within 60 min, and 1351 μmol·h−1·g−1 of hydrogen peroxide was generated simultaneously. The photodegradation performance and the photosynthesis performance both ranked among the highest ones. The regulation of ROS by tuning the structures of photocatalysts opens new prospects for the design of efficient photocatalysts at the molecular level.

Abstract:Complex multiple-component semiconductor photocatalysts can be constructed that display enhanced catalytic efficiency via multiple charge and energy transfer, mimicking photosystems in nature. In contrast, the efficiency of single-component semiconductor photocatalysts is usually limited due to the fast recombination of the photogenerated excitons. Here, we report the design of an asymmetric covalent triazine framework as an efficient organic single-component semiconductor photocatalyst. Four different molecular donor-acceptor domains are obtained within the network, leading to enhanced photogenerated charge separation via an intramolecular energy transfer cascade. The photocatalytic efficiency of the asymmetric covalent triazine framework is superior to that of its symmetric counterparts; this was demonstrated by the visible-light-driven formation of benzophosphole oxides from diphenylphosphine oxide and diphenylacetylene.

Abstract:A series of new fac-triscyclometallated iridium complexes Ir(Ln)3 (n=1–6) (L1: 2-{4-[5-phenyl-[1,3,4]oxadiazol-2-yl]-phenyl}-pyridine, L2: 2-{4-[5-(4-tert-butyl-phenyl)-[1,3,4] oxadiazol-2-yl]-phenyl}-pyridine, L3: 9-(4-pyridin-2-yl-phenyl)-9H-carbazole, L4: 1-[4-(5-phenyl-[1,3,4]oxadiazol-2-yl)-phenyl]-isoquinoline, L5: 1-{4-[5-(4-tert-butyl-phenyl)-[1,3,4] oxadiazol-2-yl]-phenyl}-isoquinoline, L6: 9-(4-isoquinolin-1-yl-phenyl)-9H-carbazole) based on Ir(ppy)3 (ppy=phenyl-pyridine) and Ir(piq)3 (piq=1-phenylisoquinoline) were synthesized from Ir(acac)3 and corresponding ligands by a new and effective way using anthracene as a solvent. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction spectra of three complexes were studied and the iridium centers were found to adopt distorted octahedral coordination geometry. UV–Vis, photoluminescence, cyclic voltammetry were employed for studying the photophysical and electrochemical properties. These complexes exhibit intense phosphorescence in toluene solution at room temperature with high quantum efficiencies (0.07–0.58) and submicrosecond lifetimes (0.57–0.87μs).

Abstract:Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have emerged as a prominent group of organic semiconductors, distinguishing themselves from covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for their applications in photocatalysis. Their unique features, such as a fully conjugated structure, triazine unit, interlayer π-π interaction, large specific surface area, and exceptional thermal and chemical stability, make them promising candidates for artificial photosynthetic processes, including photocatalytic water splitting and CO2 reduction reactions. However, challenges like high exciton binding energy and carrier recombination need to be addressed. In this review, we highlight the latest advances in utilizing CTFs for photocatalytic applications and delve into strategies aimed at modifying the band structure, enhancing photoexcited carrier separation, and improving carrier transfer processes in CTFs. These approaches involve molecular design, structural regulation, and the creation of heterostructures, all aimed at boosting the quantum efficiency of photocatalytic reactions. These efforts hold tremendous potential for advancing solar fuel production.

Abstract:Developing visible-light-active porous organic polymers with high photocatalytic efficiency is highly desirable. Here, two triazine-based conjugated microporous polymers were synthesized. The structures were controllably adjusted to explore the structure–photocatalytic activity relationship. T-CMP-1 containing more triazine units exhibited a hydrogen evolution rate of 3214.3 μmol h–1 g–1, much higher than that of T-CMP-2 (242.1 μmol h–1 g–1). The increasing contents of triazine units bring better hydrogen evolution efficiency.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
