Abstract:Herein we report a facile method to prepare highly luminescent soft materials based on task-specific ionic liquids which can solubilize lanthanide oxides and the organic ligand. The luminescent soft materials are obtained by directly dissolved lanthanide oxides and organic ligand (2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA), 1, 10-phenanthroline (Phen)) into carboxyl-functionalized ionic liquid aided with an appropriate amount of water. FT-IR, TGA and luminescence spectroscopy were employed to characterize the lanthanide-containing ionic liquids. Up to 25 mol% lanthanide ions (i.e., the molar ratio of IL/Ln(3+) = 3:1) can be incorporated into the task-specific ionic liquids. Optical properties of the soft materials such as colour, luminescence can be adapted by simply changing the type of lanthanide ions and/or adding to organic ligand.

Abstract:In situ synthesis of terbium carboxyl complexes in an organic–inorganic hybrid matrix by a sol–gel process has been proposed. The formation of terbium carboxyl complexes in the hybrid matrix is confirmed by the luminescence spectra and IR spectra. It is observed that the location at the amino group in aminobenzoic acid has a large effect on the luminescence properties and lifetimes. Furthermore, the emission intensity decreases with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Functional photoluminescent materials are emerging as a fascinating this work, luminescent organic-in-organic hybrid hydrogels are facilely designed through supramolecular self-assembly of sodium cholate, and lanthanide ions such as Eu3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+/Tb3+. Fluorescence microscopy and TEM visualization demonstrates the existence of spontaneously self-assembled nanofibers and 3D networks in hybrid hydrogel. Photoluminescence enhancement of lanthanide ions is realized through coordination with cholate and co-assembly into 1D nanofibers, which can successfully shield the Eu3+ from being quenched by water. The photoluminescence emission intensity of a hybrid hydrogel exhibits strong dependence on europium/cholate molar ratio, with maximum emission appearing at a stoichiometry of 1:3. Further-more, the emission color of a lanthanide-cholate hydrogel can be tuned by utilizing different lanthanide ions or co-doping ions. Moreover, photoluminescent lanthanide oxysulfide inorganic nanotubes are synthesized by means of a self-templating approach based on lanthanide-cholate supramolecular hydrogels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the lanthanide oxysulfide inorganic nanotubes are prepared in solution under mild conditions.

Abstract:A series of ternary lanthanide beta-diketonate derivatives covalently bonded to xerogels (named as Ln-DP-xerogel, Ln = Sm, Yb, Nd, Er, Pr, Ho) by doubly functionalized alkoxysilane (dbm-Si) was synthesized in situ via a sol-gel process. The properties of these xerogel materials were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The data and analyses suggest that the lanthanide derivatives have been covalently grafted to the corresponding xerogels successfully. Of importance here is that, after excitation with visible light (400-410 nm), the xerogels. all show characteristic visible (Sm3+) as well as near-infrared (NIR; Sm3+, Yb3+, Nd3+, Er3+, Pr3+, Ho3+) luminescence of the corresponding Ln(3+) ions, which is attributed to the energy transfer from the ligands to the Ln(3+) ions via an antenna effect. Exciting with visible light is advantageous over UV excitation. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first observation of NIR luminescence with visible light excitation from xerogels covalently bonded with the Sm3+, Pr3+, and Ho3+ derivatives. Compared to lanthanide complexes (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb) functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials that exhibit similar optical properties reported in our previous work, the Ln-DP-xerogel (Ln = Sm, Yb, Nd, Er, Pr, Ho) in this case offer advantages in terms of ease of synthesis and handling and potentially low cost for emerging technological applications. Development of near-infrared luminescence of the lanthanide materials with visible light excitation is of strong interest to emerging applications such as chemosensors, laser systems, and optical amplifiers.

Abstract:Four types of novel inorganic–organic hybrid zwitterionic polymers were successfully synthesized through sol–gel process. The polymer precursors were obtained by a reaction of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ethylene diamine (TMSPEDA), under non-aqueous conditions, with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), and followed by a reaction with γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL), and then exposure to open air to generate the hybrid zwitterionic polymers. The final polymers and products were characterized by FTIR, 13C NMR, TGA and conductometric titration curves. Both FTIR and 13C NMR spectra of polymers demonstrate the generation of ion pairs in these hybrid zwitterionic polymers. The TGA analysis reveals that the thermal stability of these types of hybrid zwitterionic polymers could go up to 350°C. The relationships between conductivity and pH values show that the conductivities and the amphiphilic behaviors of hybrid zwitterionic polymers can be influenced by pH values; and the isoelectric point (IEP) of these kinds of hybrid zwitterionic polymers was pH 6.68–8.20, while the apparent contents of both anionic and cationic groups in the polymers are in the range of (1.1–2.1)×10−4 and (2–8.0)×10−5mol/g, respectively. These kinds of polymers are expected to have applications to create anti-fouling membranes and single ionic conductors as well as to separate multi-valent ionic salts, etc.

Abstract:A series of new near-infrared (NIR) luminescent lanthanide-quinolinate derivatives [Ln(Q-Si)(3)] and xerogels (named as LnQSi-Gel, Ln = Er, Nd, Yb) covalently linked with the Ln(Q-Si)(3) by using the 8-hydroxyquinoline-functionalized alkoxysilane (Q-Si) have been synthesized. The obtained xerogel materials LnQSi-Gel are rigid and show homogeneous by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images. The Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), fluorescence spectra of Ln(Q-Si)(3), and LnQSi-Gel were measured, and the corresponding luminescence decay analyses were recorded. Of importance here is that the excitation spectra of the Ln(Q-Si)(3) and LnQSi-Gel extend to the region of visible light (more than 500 nm). Upon ligand-mediated excitation with the visible light, the Ln(Q-Si)(3) and LnQSi-Gel show the characteristic NIR-luminescence of the corresponding lanthanide ions through the intramolecular energy transfer from the ligands to the lanthanide ions. The good luminescent performances enable these NIR-luminescent xerogel materials to have possible applications in medical diagnostics, laser systems, and optics, etc.

Abstract:A hierarchically ordered 4,4′-biphenylene-bridged mesoporous organosilica framework (Bp-PMO) has been synthesized with the aim of using it as a new hybrid host for LnIII ions. A series of novel organic–inorganic luminescent hybrid materials have been obtained by covalently linking LnIII complexes (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Er, and Yb) to Bp-PMO functionalized with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA). The visible and NIR photoluminescence studies of the hybrid materials show that Bp-PMO acts both as an inorganic host and an organic co-sensitizer for LnIII ions. The intrinsic quantum yield and lifetime data obtained for the hybrid material containing EuIII (54.5% and 615 μs) are among the highest values reported for hybrid materials containing EuIIItetrakis(β-diketonate) complexes. The combination of Bp-PMO and HTTA also provides sizable sensitization for TbIII, ErIII and YbIII ions. The overall quantum yields and lifetime measurements for mixed metallic hybrid materials show that Ln → Ln′ energy transfer occurs in the mixed lanthanide systems. In addition, controlling the Ln/Ln′ ratio allows one to tune the emission colour.

Abstract:Acrylic resin/titania organic-inorganic hybrid materials were successfully prepared by the in situ polymerization of acrylic monomers as well as by blending the synthesized thermoplastic acrylic resins with titania sols which were first prehydrolyzed from the precursor of Ti(O-n-Bu)(4). Effects of the amount of water and acid used for the preparation of TiO2 sols,the -COOH content in the acrylic resin and preparing methods on the structure of hybrid materials were investigated. The Soxhlet extracting experiments proved that crosslinking reactions took place between the organic phase and the inorganic phase, leading to homogenous and transparent hybrid systems. Meanwhile, higher -COOH content resulted in higher crosslinking degree. The SAXS results showed that there existed titania networks with a loose structure and nano-scale size within the hybrids. Moreover, larger amount of water and acid in the sol-gel process led to larger size and denser titania organic phase. In comparison with the in situ polymerization, blending method could prepare more homogeneous hybrids with mono-dispersed titania.

Abstract:A series of negatively charged hybrid (organic–inorganic) materials were prepared through sol–gel process. The alkoxysilane-containing sol–gel precursors PEO-[Si(OEt)3]2SO3H were obtained by endcapping polyethylene oxide (PEO) of different molecular weights with 2,4-diisocyanate toluene (TDI), followed by a coupling reaction with phenylaminomethyl triethoxysilane (ND-42) and sulfonation afterwards. The negatively charged precursors were then hydrolyzed and condensed to generate hybrid sol–gel materials, which were characterized by IR, TGA, XRD as well as the conventional ion exchange measurements. The results showed that in the hybrid sol–gel precursors PEO-[Si(OEt)3]2SO3H organic PEO component was incorporated with alkoxysilane-containing ND-42 covalently. As the molecular weight of the precursors increased, thermal stability and cation-exchange capacity of the hybrid material decreased. All the hybrid materials were amorphous and those prepared from higher molecular weight precursors were flexible.

Abstract:In this work, Tb3+ doped CaF2 (CaF2: Tb3+) nanoparticles were synthesized with the silylant agent synthesized from meta-aminobenzoic acid and 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane as the surface modifier. The as-synthesized nanoparticles were covalently bonded to the silicon-oxygen network through a sol-gel process with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the precursor, resulting in the chemically bonded hybrid xerogel. The chemical doping makes the nanoparticles evenly dispersed in the stable hybrid system. The combined techniques SEM and EDX have confirmed the hybrid xerogel formed Si–O–Si network structure and the nanoparticles were successfully embedded into the Si–O–Si network. The efficient energy transfers from silylant agent to Tb3+ ions were observed in both the nanoparticles and hybrid xerogel, showing an obvious characteristic emission of Tb3+ ions. Both decay curves of nanoparticles and the hybrid xerogel were fitted as a double exponential decay, and the hybrid xerogel exhibited longer luminescent lifetime.

Abstract:By employing sodium dodecyl sulfate as the templating agent, mesoporous lanthanum oxide/surfactant complexes of hexagonal and lamellar phases were synthesized within the micellar solution of various pH values. The structures of the resulting products were studied by XRD, HRTEM, SEM and TG/DTA. The XRD patterns and HRTEM micrographs showed that the interlayer distance of the typical lamellar structure products was ranging from 3.5 to 4.0 nm and the unit cell parameter of the produced ordered hexagonal structures was about 4.4 nm.

Abstract:Lanthanide-containing functional complexes have found a variety of applications in materials science and biomedicine because of their unique electroptical and magnetic properties. However, the poor stability and solubility in water of multicomponent lanthanide organic assemblies significantly limit their practical applications. We report here a series of water-stable anionic Ln2nL3n-type (n = 2, 3, 4, and 5) lanthanide organic polyhedra (LOPs) constructed by deprotonation self-assembly of three fully conjugated ligands (H4L1 and H4L2a/b) featuring a 2,6-pyridine bitetrazolate chelating moiety. The outcomes of the LOPs formation reactions were found to be very sensitive toward the reaction conditions including base, metal source, solvents, and concentrations as characterized by a combination of NMR, high-resolution ESI–MS and X-ray crystallography. Ligands H4L2a/b manifested an excellent sensitization toward lanthanide ions (Ln = EuIII and TbIII), with high luminescent quantum yields for Tb8L2a12 (Φ = 11.2% in water) and Eu8L2b12 (Φ = 76.8% in DMSO) measured in polar solvents. Furthermore, due to the giant molecular weight and rigidity of the polyhedral skeleton, Gd8L2b12 showed a very high longitudinal relaxivity (r1) of 400.53 mM–1S–1. The performance of Gd8L2b12 as potential magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents (CAs) in vivo was evaluated with much longer retention time in the tumor sites compared with the commercial GdIII-based CAs. Dual-modal imaging potential has also been demonstrated with the mixed Eu/Gd LOPs. Abstract:A series of novel, colorless, and transparent sot-gel derived hybrid materials Ln-DBM-Si covalently grafted with Ln(DBM-OH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O (where DBM-OH = o-hydroxydibenzoylmethane, Ln = Nd, Er, Yb, and Sin) were prepared through the primary beta-diketone ligand DBM-OH. The structures and optical properties of Ln-DBM-Si were studied in detail. The investigation results revealed that the lanthanide complexes were successfully in situ grafted into the corresponding hybrids Ln-DBM-Si. Upon excitation at the maximum absorption of ligands, the resultant materials displayed excellent near-infrared luminescence. Meanwhile, a model for the indirect excitation mechanism was introduced to discuss the ligands-to-Ln(3+) intramolecular energy transfer. Furthermore, the radiative properties of the Nd3+ ion and the Er3+ ion in Ln-DBM-Si are evaluated by applying the Judd-Ofelt analysis.

Abstract:MCM-41 mesoporous silica has been functionalized with aromatic carboxylic acids salicylic acid (Sal) and 2-hydroxyl-3-methylbenzoic acid (HMBA) through co-condensation approach of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant as a template. Organic ligands salicylic acid or 2-hydroxyl-3-methylbenzoic acid grafted to the coupling agent 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl isocyanate (TEPIC) was used as the precursor for the preparation of an organic–inorganic hybrid materials. Novel organic–inorganic mesoporous luminescent hybrid containing Ln3+ (Tb3+, Eu3+) complexes covalently attached to the functionalized ordered mesoporous MCM-41, which were designated as Ln-Sal-MCM-41 and Ln-HMBA-MCM-41, respectively, were obtained by sol–gel process. The luminescence properties of these resulting materials were characterized in detail, and the results reveal that luminescent mesoporous materials have high surface area, uniformity in the mesopore structure and good crystallinity. Moreover, the mesoporous material covalently bonded Tb3+ complex (Tb-Sal-MCM-41 and Tb-HMBA-MCM-41) exhibit the stronger characteristic emission of Tb3+ and longer lifetime than the corresponding Eu-containg materials Eu-Sal-MCM-41 and Eu-HMBA-MCM-41 due to the triplet state energy of modified organic ligands Sal-TEPIC and HMBA-TEPIC match with the emissive energy level of Tb3+ very well. In addition, the luminescence lifetime and emission quantum efficiency of 5D0 Eu3+ excited state also indicates the efficient intramolecular energy transfer process in Tb-SAL-MCM-41 and Tb-HMBA-MCM-41.

Abstract:Transformations of molecules to bulk materials constitute a unique direction for rational design of materials, known as bottom-up syntheses. Although organic-inorganic hybrid materials have played indispensable roles as mechanical, optical, electronic, and biomedical materials, isolated organic‒inorganic hybrid molecules (currently only limited in covalent compounds) seldom presented throughout the preparation of hybrid materials, which is due to the distinct behaviours of organic covalent bonds and inorganic ionic bonds in molecular construction. Here, we integrate typical covalent and ionic bonds within one molecule to create an organic‒inorganic hybrid molecule, which can be used for bottom-up syntheses of hybrid materials. A combination of the organic covalent thioctic acid (TA) and the inorganic ionic calcium carbonate oligomer (CCO) via an acid-base reaction provided a TA-CCO hybrid molecule, and its representative molecular formula was TA 2 Ca(CaCO 3 ) 2 . Its dual reactivity involving co-polymerization of the organic TA-segment and inorganic CCO-segment generated the respective covalent and ionic networks. The two networks were interconnected and integrated by each TA-CCO complex to form a covalent-ionic bicontinuous structure within the resulting hybrid material, poly(TA-CCO), which synchronously achieved unification of paradoxical mechanical properties, i.e., hardness versus resilience and strength versus deformability. Moreover, the dynamic Ca 2+ -CO 3 2- bonds in the ionic network and S‒S bonds in the covalent network ensured material recyclability with plastic-like mouldability while preserving thermal stability. The coexistence of ceramic-like, rubber-like and plastic-like behaviours within poly(TA-CCO) goes beyond current classifications of materials, following the generation of the “elastic ceramic plastic”. The demonstrated bottom-up creation of organic‒inorganic hybrid molecules, covalent-ionic bicontinuous networks and ultimately unique materials provides a feasible pathway for design and construction of hybrid materials by molecular engineering, thereby supplementing the classical methodology used for manufacture of organic‒inorganic hybrid materials.

Abstract:Lanthanide(III) beta-diketonate complexes (Ln = Eu, Nd, Er) were immobilized on an iso-nicotinic acid (nit)-functionalized titania material. lso-nicotinic acid was tethered to the titania material via reacting with titanium alkoxide; tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) lanthanide(III) dihydrate complexes were coupled to the titania via adduct formation with the nitrogen atoms from bonded iso-nicotinic acid; and the coordinated water molecules were expelled from the first coordination sphere of the lanthanide(III) ion as revealed by the prolonged lifetime of the hybrid titania material compared with that of the pure tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) europium(III). Depending on the lanthanide ion, the luminescent titania materials emit in the visible region (Ln = Eu) or in the near-infrared region (Ln = Nd, Er).
