Abstract:Halogen bonds (XBs) between metal anions and halides have seldom been reported because metal anions are reactive for XB donors. The pyramidal-shaped Mn(CO)5− anion is a candidate metallic XB acceptor with a ligand-protected metal core that maintains the negative charge and an open site to accept XB donors. Herein, Mn(CO)5− is prepared by electrospray ionization, and its reaction with CH3I in gas phase is studied using mass spectrometry and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The product observed experimentally at m/z = 337 is assigned as [IMn(CO)4(OCCH3)]−, which is formed by successive nucleophilic substitution and reductive elimination, instead of the halogen-bonded complex (XC) CH3−I···Mn(CO)5−, because the I···Mn interaction is weak within XC and it could be a transient species. Inspiringly, DFT calculations predict that replacing CH3I with CF3I can strengthen the halogen bonding within the XC due to the electro-withdrawing ability of F. More importantly, in so doing, the nucleophilic substitution barrier can be raised significantly, ~30 kcal/mol, thus leaving the system trapping within the XC region. In brief, the combination of a passivating metal core and the introduction of an electro-withdrawing group to the halide can enable strong halogen bonding between metallic anion and iodide.

Abstract:Research on new supramolecular synthons facilitates the progress of materials design. Herein, the ability of sp(2) carbonyl oxygen atoms to act as halogen-bond acceptors was established through cocrystallization. Four sets of carbonyl compounds, including aldehydes, ketones, esters, and amides, were selected as halogen-bond acceptors. In the absence of strong hydrogen bonds, 14 out of 16 combinations of halogen-bond donors and acceptors could form cocrystals, whereby the supramolecular synthon C=O center dot center dot center dot X acts as the main interaction. Further, the geometric parameters of the C= O center dot center dot center dot X interaction were statistically revealed on the basis of the crystallographic database. The bifurcated interaction mode that has been observed in other halogen-bond synthons rarely occurs in the case of C=O center dot center dot center dot X. The robustness of C=O center dot center dot center dot X makes its application in crystal engineering possible and opens up new opportunities in designing multicomponent fluorescent materials, as indicated by multicolor emission of cocrystals D through C=O center dot center dot center dot X interactions.
Halogen-bond Induced Unusual Polyhalogen Anions Formation in Hydrogen-Bonded Frameworks to Secure Iodine Sequestration

Abstract:Safe confinement of fission iodine isotopes for long-term radioactive waste disposal remains a formidable challenge, as conventional sorbents provide inherently weak iodine-host interactions. We report here a novel halogen bond (X-bond) directed strategy to sequester volatile iodine in hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) frameworks with unprecedented stability. Charge-assisted H-bonded frameworks bearing open halide sites are developed, showing distinctive iodine encapsulation behaviors without compromising the crystallinity. Direct crystallographic evidence indicates the formation of X-bonds, i.e., ∣–∣⋯Cl− and ∣–∣⋯Br−, within the confined pore channels. Unusual polyhalogen anions, i.e., [I2Cl2]2− and [I2Br2]2−, sustained in H-bonded frameworks are identified for the first time. The X-bond reinforced host-guest interaction affords robust iodine trapping without leaking out even at elevated temperatures up to 180 °C. By integrating the halogen-bond chemistry with H-bonded frameworks, this study offers fresh concepts for developing effective host reservoirs to secure fission iodine isotopes from spent fuel reprocessing off-gases.
Halogen Cation Transfer in Halogen Bonding Catalysis

Abstract:The potential of fluorine to participate in halogen bonding (XB) has remained a subject of ongoing debate. The discovery of N-fluoropyridinium triflate as a unique "F-cation organocatalyst" for aziridine synthesis is considered to be the first reported example of F-halogen bonding catalysis. Nevertheless, the mechanistic details of this reaction have remained elusive, and compelling evidence supporting the F-halogen bond catalysis has been lacking. In this study, we present an in-depth computational investigation of the mechanism of this reaction to gain insight into the intriguing role of the F-cation organocatalyst. Our results, however, are inconsistent with the previous prevalent F-halogen bonding catalysis mechanism but instead, bring to light a new fluorine cation transfer mechanism. Control experiments provide further support for this alternative mechanism. Moreover, preliminary results suggest that other reactions traditionally attributed to ‘classic’ halogen bonding catalysis might also involve a halogen cation transfer process. These mechanistic insights have important far reaching implications for the rational design of halogen bonding catalytic systems.

Abstract:Halogen–water–hydrogen bridges (XWH bridges), in which one hydrogen bond (H-bond) in a traditional water-mediated H-bond bridge is replaced by a halogen bond (X-bond), is a novel mode of interaction for water in biological molecules. In this study, we investigate several protein–halogenated ligand complexes using a two-layer quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) ONIOM method. Analysis of the geometric characteristics and energy behaviors of the complexes, together with the AIM results, indicate that XWH bridges are present in these systems. Furthermore, our investigations show that XWH bridges can have an important role in ligand recognition and binding.

Abstract:Supramolecular glasses and deep eutectic solvents are achieved by the biaxial type halogen bonded complexation, which also appends light irradiation‐triggered luminescence through a hydrogen atom transfer process, showing applications in anti‐counterfeit and display. Hypervalent iodine(III) have widely been utilized for organic synthetic reagents. They are also recognized as positive charge‐assisted, exceptionally robust biaxial halogen bond donors, while their potential in supramolecular materials is barely explored. This work reports a cyclic diaryliodonium ion as biaxial halogen bonding donor that displays remarkable binding affinity toward phenanthroline or acridine acceptors with chiral pendants. Biaxial halogen bonding enables chiroptical evolution in solution, allowing for rational control over supramolecular chirality. Leveraging their strong binding affinity, the halogen bonding complexes manifested amorphous properties and deep eutectic behavior in the solid state. Capitalizing on these attributes, this work achieves the successful preparation of supramolecular glasses and deep eutectic solvents. Additionally, halogen bonding appended light irradiation‐triggered luminescence through a hydrogen atom transfer process, showing applications in anti‐counterfeit and display.

Study on Halogen Bonding of Organofluorine Compounds in China

Abstract:This review summarizes studies on halogen bonding of fluorine-containing alkyl and aryl iodides in China. From 1987 to 1993, Chen et al. found that there existed donor-acceptor interaction between fluorinated organic (di)iodides, as Lewis acids, and organic Lewis bases such as amines and ethers, which represented early important advances for the research on the non-covalent force currently called as halogen bonding. From 2001 to now, several groups have used halogen bonding as driving force to conduct researches on crystal engineering. In this catogery, Zhu et al. investigated the one-dimensional self-assembly between perfluoro-alpha, pi-diioodalkanes and amines, ethers, and hexamethylphosphamide. Jin et al. studied the complexation between fluorinated aryl iodides and various N-heterocycles, whereas Zhang and Li et al. constructed supramolecular double and quadruple helices from one or two molecular components. Jin et al. conducted extensive studies on C-I center dot center dot center dot pi halogen bonding and its applications in crystal engineering. Wang and Wan et al. utilized halogen bonding to induce trianglular aromatic molecules to co-assemble into two-dimensional honeycomb arrays on surface, whereas Wang et al. utilized halogen bond to induce mono-layer and layer-by-layer self-assembly of two polymers or organic molecules. Zhao and Li et al. developed the applications of halogen bonding in solution-phase multi-site molecular recognition of foldamer receptors for ICF2-incorporated tri-armed guests. Hu, Gong, Liao et al. utilized halogen bonding to improve the material properties of a variety of organic aromatic molecules. Several groups have also used halogen bonding to increase the selectivity of a number of organic reactions. Representative examples are described, which highlight the utility of halogen bonding.

Abstract:A Gram-negative, slightly curved rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain KMY02T, was isolated from a forest soil in Daejeon, South Korea. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain KMY02T was shown to belong to the family Burkholderiaceae of the Betaproteobacteria, and to be related most closely to Burkholderia hospita LMG 20598T (98.7%), Burkholderia caribensis LMG 18531T (98.0%) and Burkholderia phymatum LMG 21445T (97.4%). Its phylogenetic distance from all recognized species within the genus Burkholderia was less than 97%. Chemotaxonomic data [Q-8 as the major ubiquinone; C16:0, C17:0 cyclo, summed feature 7 (C18:1omega7c/omega9t/omega12t) and C15:0 as the major fatty acids] supported the affiliation of strain KMY02T to the genus Burkholderia. The results of DNA-DNA hybridization experiments and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the strain from recognized Burkholderia species. Therefore, KMY02T (=KCTC 12388T=NBRC 100964T) represents the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Burkholderia terrae sp. nov. is proposed.
Halogen Bonding-Driven Formation of Supramolecular Macrocycles and Double Helix

Abstract:The crystal structures of three intramolecularly hydrogen bonded rigid aromatic amide derivatives, which all bear one iodine atom at one end as the donor and one pyridine unit at the other end as the acceptor, have been described to reveal the utility of halogen bonding in inducing the formation of supramolecular macrocycles. All the three compounds formed intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bonding. For short compound 1, halogen bonding induced the formation of an extended supramolecular array. For longer folded compounds 2 and 3, halogen bonding could hold two molecules to form supramolecular macrocycles even by adopting a highly distorted, energetically less favorable conformation (for 3). Depending on the solvent for the growth of crystals, compound 3 could also gave rise to a halogen bonded supramolecular double helix. A Theoretical Study of the Interactions of Iodo-Perfluorocarbon and Iodo-Hydrocarbon with Haloid Anions

Abstract:Ab initio calculations have been performed on a series of complexes formed between iodo-perfluorocarbons(PFCs) and iodo-hydrocarbons(HCs) and haloid anions to gain a deeper insight into the nature of halogen bonds. It appears that halogen bonds in these complexes are much stronger than neutral halogen bonds. Calculations also show that the strength of halogen bonds in iodo-PFC⋯ haloid anion dimers are greater than those in iodo-HC⋯ haloid anion dimers. A comparison of the two complex series reveals that the hybridization state of the carbon atom bonded to iodine has a less pronounced effect on the interatomic distances I⋯X in the iodo-PFC series in relation to the iodo-HC series. PCM calculations used to investigate the solvent effect on halogen bonds unveil that, in the gas phase, fluorine anion prefers to form halogen-bonded complexes with respect to chloride, bromide, and iodine anions; however, the preference is not obvious, and even an opposite order is observed in solutions. It is worth mentioning that the iodo-PFC⋯ fluorine anion complexes present a special structure, i.e. the interatomic I⋯F distances in these complexes are relatively short and the corresponding C–I bonds tend to be further broken. These features, in combination with the geometrical data, indicate that ate-complexes are formed between iodo-PFC and fluorine anions.
Hypervalent Iodine(III) Mediated Halogen Bonded Supramolecular Chiral System with Cholesteryl Naphthalimides

Abstract:Halogen bonding acknowledged as a noteworthy weak interaction, has gained growing recognition in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In this study, we selected structurally rigid diaryliodonium ions (I(III)) with two biaxial σ‐holes as halogen‐bond donors, to bind with three chiral acceptor molecules bearing cholesteryl and naphthalimides with distinct geometries. The abundant carbonyl oxygen atoms in side‐arm substituents function as multiple acceptors for halogen bonding. The self‐aggregation of chiral acceptor molecules demonstrates adaptiveness to solvent media, evidenced by the inversion of the Cotton effect and the morphological evolution from spherical to rod‐like nanoarchitectures in different solvent systems. The distinct geometries of the acceptor molecules conferred various binding modes with I(III). The introduction of I(III) as a halogen‐bond donor regulates the aggregation of the donors, achieving amplification of chiroptical signals and inheriting solvent responsiveness from the self‐aggregated assembly. This study successfully utilized rational structural design and multimodal control strategies to achieve regulation of supramolecular chirality.

Iodine vacancies enhanced C-Br bond activation and debromination of decabromodiphenyl ether over non-stoichiometric bismuth iodide homojunction

Abstract:The activation of carbon-halogen bonds is of great significance to realize the breakdown of halogenated contaminants. Herein, a series of iodine vacancies enriched BiOI 1-x photocatalysts prepared by simple temperature regulation were successfully applied in photocatalytic debromination of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) under irradiation (λ > 360 nm). The obtained BiOI-450°C composed of Bi 7 O 9 I 3 /Bi 5 O 7 I homojunction with iodine vacancies exhibited the best photocatalytic capacity to debromine BDE209. The removal of the first bromine atom from BDE209 on BiOI-450°C displayed strong position selectivity that meta-debromination is superior to para -debromination, with essentially no ortho -debromination products formed. The selectivity of meta -debromination on iodine vacancies is as high as 72 %, which is higher than the selectivity on oxygen vacancies and sulfur vacancies. The larger space of iodine vacancy is more conducive to accommodating the bromine atom, therefore stabilizing the meta- bromine atomic adsorption configuration of BDE209 and promoting the C-Br bond activation by O...Br halogen bond with the support of surrounding oxygen atoms. This work will provide a feasible strategy for efficient dehalogenation of halogenated persistent organic pollutants based on halogenated bond activation.

Construction of Halogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks (XOFs) as Novel Efficient Iodinating Agents

Abstract:The structural diversity and the various applications of organic frameworks have attracted much attention in recent years. Recently, halogen-bonded organic frameworks (XOFs) became a novel member of these materials, thereby facilitating the exploration of the interesting structures as well as functions. Here we present two types of [N···I+···N] connected XOFs (XOF-TPy and XOF-TPEB) with two tridentate ligands as building blocks. XOF-TPy and XOF-TPEB were characterized by 1H NMR, UV-vis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), IR, SEM, and HR-TEM. Two-dimensional (2D) structural models were established based on powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data and theoretical simulations. Further experiment showed that these XOFs were excellent iodinating agents for the substituted arylboronic acids with either the electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups upon heating without any catalyst. This research not only brings further understanding to the XOFs but also extends the applications of XOFs.
Halogen bonding in the co-crystallization of potentially ditopic diiodotetrafluorobenzene: a powerful tool for constructing multicomponent supramolecular assemblies

Abstract:Abstract Halogen bonding is emerging as a significant driving force for supramolecular self-assembly and has aroused great interest during the last two decades. Among the various halogen-bonding donors, we take notice of the ability of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-DITFB) to co-crystallize with diverse halogen-bonding acceptors in the range from neutral Lewis bases (nitrogen-containing compounds, N-oxides, chalcogenides, aromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic complexes) to anions (halide ions, thio/selenocyanate ions and tetrahedral oxyanions), leading to a great variety of supramolecular architectures such as discrete assemblies, 1D infinite chains and 2D/3D networks. Some of them act as promising functional materials (e.g. fluorescence, phosphorescence, optical waveguide, laser, non-linear optics, dielectric and magnetism) and soft materials (e.g. liquid crystal and supramolecular gel). Here we focus on the supramolecular structures of multicomponent complexes and their related physicochemical properties, highlight representative examples and show clearly the main directions that remain to be developed and improved in this area. From the point of view of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry, the complexes summarized here should give helpful information for further design and investigation of the elusive category of halogen-bonding supramolecular functional materials.

Σ-Hole Effect-Induced Electroluminescence of Halogen Cocrystals for Determination of Iodide in Seawater.

Abstract:Developing new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminators with high stability, wide applicability, and strong designability is of great strategic significance to promote the ECL field to the frontier. Here, driven by the I···N bond, 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene (TFTI) and 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine (TMT) self-assembled into a novel halogen cocrystal (TFTI-TMT) through slow solution volatilization. Significant difference of charge density existed between the N atoms on TMT and the σ-hole of the I atoms on TFTI. Upon the induction of σ-hole effect, high-speed and spontaneous charge transferring from TMT to the σ-hole of TFTI occurred, stimulating exciting ECL signals. Besides, the σ-hole of the I atoms could capture iodine ions specifically, which blocked the original charge transfer from the N atoms to the σ-hole, causing the ECL signal of TFTI-TMT to undergo a quenching rate as high as 92.9%. Excitingly, the ECL sensing of TFTI-TMT toward I- possessed a wide linear range (10-5000 nM) and ultralow detection limit (3 nM) in a real water sample. The halogen cocrystal strategy makes σ-hole a remarkable new viewpoint of ECL luminator design and enables ECL analysis technology to contribute to addressing the environmental and health threats posed by iodide pollution.

Abstract:Various functional groups have been considered as acceptors for halogen bonds, but the oxime functionality has received very little attention in this context. In this study, we focus on the analysis of the hydrogen and halogen bond preferences observed in the crystal structures of 5-halogeno-1H-isatin-3-oximes. These molecules can be involved in various non-covalent interactions, and the competition between these interactions has a decisive influence on their self-organization. In particular, we were interested to see whether the crystal structures of 5-halogeno-1H-isatin-3-oximes, especially bromine- and iodine-substituted ones, are characterized by the presence of halogen bonds formed with the oxime functionality. The oxime group proved its ability to compete with the other strong donor and acceptor sites by participating in the formation of cyclic hydrogen-bonded heterosynthons oxime∙∙∙amide and Ooxime∙∙∙Br/I halogen bonds.

Abstract:Haspin, an atypical serine/threonine protein kinase, is a potential target for cancer therapy. 5-iodotubercidin (5-iTU), an adenosine derivative, has been identified as a potent Haspin inhibitor in vitro. In this paper, quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to identify and quantitatively confirm the presence of halogen bonding (XB), specifically halogen∙∙∙π (aromatic) interaction between halogenated tubercidin ligands with Haspin. Consistent with previous theoretical finding, the site specificity of the XB binding over the ortho-carbon is identified in all cases. A systematic increase of the interaction energy down Group 17, based on both quantum chemical and MD results, supports the important role of halogen bonding in this series of inhibitors. The observed trend is consistent with the experimental observation of the trend of activity within the halogenated tubercidin ligands (F < Cl < Br < I). Furthermore, non-covalent interaction (NCI) plots show that cooperative non-covalent interactions, namely, hydrogen and halogen bonds, contribute to the binding of tubercidin ligands toward Haspin. The understanding of the role of halogen bonding interaction in the ligand–protein complexes may shed light on rational design of potent ligands in the future.

Abstract:The escalating utilization of nuclear energy and nuclear medicine raises concerns about the environmental impact of radioactive iodine, necessitating the development of effective iodine adsorbents, especially under a real-world scenario with extremely low iodine concentration and elevated temperature. Herein, we have presented the construction of a nitrogen-abundant two-dimensional (2D) halogen-bonded organic framework, XOF-TNP , characterized by exceptional crystallinity, thermal stability, and nitrogen-rich structures. XOF-TNP exhibits strong binding to iodine, thanks to the fact that iodine can be pre-enriched into the framework through N⋯I interactions. The nitrogen-rich framework and I + synergistically have extremely high binding force to iodine, enabling the rapid and efficient capture of iodine in both vapor and solution phases, with significant recyclability. Further flow-through adsorption experiments using an XOF-TNP -packed column achieve 99% iodine removal from hexane and aqueous solutions, surpassing traditional activated carbon. This highlights its potential for environmental remediation. XOF-TNP enables the development of a novel rewritable security paper, utilizing its iodine adsorption properties to encrypt and decrypt QR codes. This research expands the application scope of halogen-bonded organic frameworks, providing insights into the design of materials for environmental remediation and security applications.

Abstract:This review article undiscloses the significance of anion-π bonding in iodide-selective supramolecular chemosensors. Due to their lower basicity and nucleophilicity, iodide-selective chemosensors have received less attention than other halide ions. However, several supramolecular organic sensors have emerged by utilizing the larger size of the iodide anion, allowing it to fit into the receptor's cavity or pseudo-cavity readily. Therein, it was frequently presented that iodide-selective sensors typically involved new charge transfer bands in absorbance spectra and a fluorescence quenching, closely resembling the effects of anion-π non-covalent interactions. This review article meticulously explores the substantial evidence confirming the presence of anion-π bonding between the host and guest molecules. The current discovery has the potential to usher in a new paradigm in designing and exploring supramolecular detectors based on anion-π bonding. It should also be emphasized that an important objective is to create awareness among scientists about the less common anion-π bonding and its versatile applications toward anion recognition, non-covalent organic frameworks, and self-assemblies.
