Abstract:Pyrazolinone derivatives are a new class of organic photochromic materials with excellent optical color change properties in the powder crystal state, which show great potential for applications, including high-density storage, fluorescence switching, and bioimaging. Their design and synthesis with structural photoreversibility and excellent fluorescence modulation properties are areas of research focus. Rational modification of the molecular backbone with the introduction of the 5-bromopyridine group at the 4-position of the pyrazolinone ring was used to prepare three pyrazolinone condensed aminothiourea derivatives with photoreversible color change in the powder crystal state. The molecular structures of the compounds were confirmed by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The changes in the infrared spectra indicated alcoholic to ketonic transformation in the molecular structures upon ultraviolet (UV) illumination. The ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) absorption spectra showed significant photoreversible changes in all three derivatives, and the introduction of the electron-absorbing phenyl group resulted in the most significant fading of DP5Br3PyBP-PTSC. The fluorescence emission spectra showed that the three derivatives have prominent blue fluorescence. Their fluorescence emission intensity gradually decreased until the increase in UV illumination time produced quenching. The property of excellent fluorescence reversibility under the alternating UV and visible light was shown by all three derivatives, which are expected to be applied in fluorescent molecular switches.

Abstract:A series of novel 5-(3-aryl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-2-(3-butyl-1-chloroimidazo[1,5-a]- pyridin-7-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives has been synthesized from 3-butyl-1-chloroimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine-7-carboxylic acid and ethyl 3-aryl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylate. The compounds were characterized using IR, (1)H NMR, HRMS and UV-vis absorption. The fluorescence spectral characteristics of the compounds in dichloromethane were investigated. The results showed that absorption λmax and emission λmax was less correlated with substituent groups on N-1 position of pyrazole moiety and para position of benzene moiety. The calculated molecular orbital correlates well with their absorption.

Abstract:An organic molecular system with proton and anion-tunable photochromism properties based on a pyridinium derivative was developed. Through controlling the pH value and anion nature of the self-assembled systems, the novel three compounds displayed different photochromism behaviors. This work reveals that the introduction of additional groups into the molecule increases the diversity of the property of such complexes.

Abstract:Photoinduced Polymorphism of Fluorescent Organic Molecules in Solid State In article number 2301627, Zhiyang Liu, Quan Li, and co‐workers exploit a new organic molecule that can form single crystals with different fluorescence colors. When the crystal is irradiated by using ultraviolet light, it can achieve in‐situ fluorescence color changes from blue to chartreuse. During this process, the crystal does not undergo any chemical reaction, only the conformation and packing mode of the molecules are changed. Crystals can be melted under high‐power ultraviolet light due to the presence of photothermal effect.

Abstract:Five new materials based on pyrazole derivatives have been synthesized and characterized as organic light‐emitting devices. This report presents a novel approach to combine pyrazole with aromatic hydrocarbons via methylene. The formed molecules exhibited twisted structures, which resulted in high glass transition temperatures (Tg), which ranged from 83.0 to 101.1°C. They also had high optical band gaps (Eg); most of their optical band gaps are determined by the absorption edge technique as 3.43 to 3.66 eV, evaluated photophysical properties of these synthesized novel chromophores, the optical properties such as maximum absorption and emission wavelengths (λ; nm), molar extinction coefficients (ε; cm−1·M−1), Stokes' shifts (ΔλST; nm), and quantum yields (φF). These compounds exhibited intense absorption bonds between 230 and 350 nm, and the effect of solvent polarity on emission of these pyrazole derivatives was also studied. In addition, they showed blue fluorescence in different solvents and bathochromic shift with the increase in the solvent polarity.

Abstract:Organic dyes containing trifluoromethylated-pyrazolo[3, 4-b]quinoline were synthesized by using condensation reaction between substituted pyrazolo-4-formaldehyde and aryl amines in moderate yields. Quantum calculation, electrochemical, photophysical, and electroluminescent properties were discussed in detail. Electron-withdrawing groups at 6-position of dyes stabilized the LUMO energy levels significantly resulting in red-shifted absorption/emission spectra. Addition of electron-donating group destabilized the HOMO strongly and the LUMO energy levels slightly resulting in red-shifted absorption maxima, but in blue-shifted emission maxima. Experimental and quantum calculation results are presented here to explain this unusual phenomenon. A linear relationship of dipole moments versus Stokes shifts is obtained for these fluorophores, where the increase of dipole moment is accompanied by a decrease in Stokes shift. Organic light-emitting diodes based on selected dyes showed emission at 456 nm, maximum external quantum efficiency at 1.43%, and current efficiency at 1.95 cd/A. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In order to exploit the compounds with excellent photoswitching properties, a series of 3-pyridylazoindole derivatives were designed and synthesized. The molecular structures were characterized via 1 H and 13 C NMR, the structure of typical compound A6 was also confirmed via single crystal X-ray diffraction. This series of 3-pyridylazoindole derivatives had outstanding characteristics compared with traditional azo photoswitches, such as the red-shifted of maximum absorption wavelength, UV/vis light isomerization in both directions (PSS cis : 45–78%; PSS trans : 47–98%) can be achieved easily and broad range of trans -isomer thermal half-lives from minutes to days (0.44–38.4 h). The relationship between structure and properties verified that the photoswiching behavior of azo photoswitches was closely related to the conjugation groups and electronic effects modifying groups. Besides, the frontier molecular orbital and differences of spatial structure calculated by density functional theory (DFT) further explained the performance characteristics of photoswitches. What more, the compound A7 exhibited excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and could also be used as selective "on–off" fluorescence sensor for Cu 2+ , which expanded the photochemical properties of 3-pyridylazoindole derivatives.

Abstract:The prepared fluorescent organic crystal can emit different fluorescence colors in situ under light irradiation without damaging the crystalline structure or changing the chemical structure of the compound, only by changing the molecular conformation and packing. Increased light intensity can transform the organic crystals into an amorphous state due to photothermal effect, showing photoinduced deformation. A new organic molecule is found to be able to form different fluorescent aggregation states in both single crystals and powders. When irradiated with ultraviolet light, single crystals and powders exhibit an in situ change in the fluorescence color from blue to green and then to chartreuse without changing the chemical groups. This stems from photoinduced changes in the molecular conformation and packing in the solid state. Two or three fluorescence colors can be displayed simultaneously in a single organic crystal by controlling the irradiation time. Under irradiation with intense ultraviolet light, deformations, movements and in situ welding of crystals can be achieved by utilizing the photothermal effect. This work demonstrates a new strategy for inducing different behaviors of organic solid state with stimulation by single‐wavelength light.

Abstract:New luminescent zinc complexes were obtained by reaction of pyrazolone-based azomethine ligands with Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O. Complexes fully characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, ES–MS, NMR, and single crystal X-ray analysis. Title complexes in the solid state demonstrate tunable luminescence from blue to orange by varying of substituents on the aromatic ring. Quantum yields are in the 0.03 to 0.49 range. TGA data shows that obtained complexes demonstrate high thermal stability and can be used as electroluminescent materials. The electrical properties of the complexes under study were considered in the ITO-Zncomplex-Al “sandwich” structure.

Abstract:Fluorescent photoswitching molecules in which photochromic diarylethene with terpyridine units (tpy) attached via a phenylene linker to the thiophene rings were synthesized. Both compounds exhibited pronounced photochromic properties. Irradiation of the open form of compounds 1 and 2 with UV light resulted in immediate photocyclization to the blue closed form; the colorless open forms could be regenerated by irradiation with visible light. In terms of potential use for optical data storage and readout, compounds 1 and 2 display fluorescence discrimination between their open and closed form. This fluorescence switching could be the basis of a nondestructive readout method. And the complexation of these two compounds with metal ions was also studied. It is amazing to find the addition of Zn2+ lead the emission wavelengths of 2a red shift up to 105nm. This unique phenomenon makes the compound 2a, a candidate for the chemical sensor for zinc.

Abstract:Two novel pyrazoline derivatives, named 2,8-bis(1,3-diphenyl-pyrazoline-5-yl)dibenzofuran (A) and 2,8-bis(1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-phenyl-pyrazoline-5-yl)dibenzofuran (B), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, MS and thermogravimetric analysis. The absorption and emission spectra of them were determined by experimental methods in different polar solvents and were computed using the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) at the same time. The calculated absorption and emission wavelengths are in good agreement with the experimental data. The fluorescence quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes of them in different polar solvents were studied by means of steady state and time resolved fluorescence. The calculated reorganization energy for hole and electron indicates that the two compounds are in favor of hole transport than electron transport. The results show the two compounds present high fluorescence quantum yields and excellent thermal stability. It makes them of great interest as novel fluorescent probes and optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Four carbazole-based fluorene derivatives 1–4 have been successfully prepared. All these compounds showed highly solid-state emissive feature with various fluorescence. The aggregation-induced emission effect of compound 1 was investigated by the systematic research of photoluminescence spectroscopy, and the results indicated that luminogen 1 displayed obvious aggregation-induced yellow light-emitting phenomenon. In addition, the solid-state emission behaviors of these fluorescent molecules could be tuned by mechanical force. More specifically, luminogens 1 and 2 showed reversible mechanochromic fluorescence conversion between blue-green and yellowish brown emission colors, luminogens 3 and 4 exhibited reversible mechanochromic fluorescence conversion involving color changes from green or yellow to yellowish brown. Furthermore, the repeatabilities of their mechanofluorochromism phenomena were excellent. The powder XRD results confirmed that the morphology conversion between crystalline and amorphous phases was responsible for the mechanofluorochromic characteristics of 1–4. This work provides valuable reference for the exploitation of high-contrast mechanochromism materials.

Abstract:A series of photochromic diarylethene derivatives containing different fluorophores was synthesized by the Sonogashira coupling reaction and characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13 C NMR and mass spectroscopy. Photochromic conversion of Cz-MS was observed and its structural change was confirmed by proton NMR. Switchable absorption and emission phenomena were observed for these molecules. These phenomena were attributed to the reversible photochromic fluorescence resonance energy transfer (pcFRET) process. The design of this novel photochromic system of Py-4MS enables information to be processed in a non-destructive manner. This overcomes the problem of the destructive nature of tracking photochromism using ultraviolet (UV)-vis spectroscopy.
