Abstract:Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots (N,P-C-dots) were prepared by microwave-assisted thermolysis of N-phosphonomethyl aminodiacetic acid and ethylenediamine. N,P-C-dots exhibit bright blue fluorescence with an emission maximum at 418 nm. Experimental results show that they have uniform dispersion with the average size of 3.3 nm, a fluorescence decay time of 7.8 ns, a quantum yield of 17.5 %, low toxicity, and good stability. All these make them an excellent choice as a fluorescent nanomaterial for use in cellular imaging.

Abstract:The remarkable optical properties and strong biocompatibility of carbon dots make them highly promising for applications in biochemical sensing and environmental testing. These carbon dots possess a surface that is easily modifiable. In this study, carbon dots have been successfully synthesized and modified by the addition of N and B dopants using the microwave method, along with the functionalization of their surface functional groups with bovine serum albumin (BSA). The maximum fluorescence intensity of N, B-CDs is observed at 462 nm when excited at a wavelength of 352 nm. N, B-CDs have a spherical size with a diameter ranging from 2 to 6 nm, confirmed by UV-Vis absorption spectra and the presence of functional groups in the FT-IR absorption patterns. BSA-functionalized N, B-CDs as the fluorescent probe demonstrate great potential as a sensor for Pb(II) ions in water, with a very low detection limit of 1.05 μg/L. This research could contribute to the development of fluorescence nanosensors.

Abstract:Ratiometric fluorescent sensors could effectively eliminate the interference of spontaneous fluorescence or instrument fluctuation to improve the analysis sensitivity and accuracy. In this work, a dual-emission nitrogen-doped carbon dots/AuNCs (NCDs-AuNCs) nanohybrid was fabricated under mild conditions by the hydrothermal method, without additional coupling agents, which is facile and environmentally friendly. The prepared nanohybrid was employed for the sensitive detection of Pb 2+ . The sensor exhibited dual emission peaks at 460 and 625 nm with efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer under a single excitation wavelength of 360 nm, in which the red fluorescence of AuNCs was enhanced and the blue fluorescence of NCDs was slightly quenched with the presence of Pb 2+ . The quantitative analysis of Pb 2+ was performed upon the change of both fluorescence intensities. The sensor was successfully used for Pb 2+ detection in real water samples with satisfactory spiking recoveries in a range of 91.0%–101.3% and low relatively standard deviations (RSDs < 3%), which exhibited good selectivity and anti-interference ability. In addition, a paper-based sensor was fabricated by immobilizing the nanohybrids on filter paper, which enables the visual semi-quantitative determination of Pb 2+ by the naked eye through the color transition from blue to pink. The prepared NCDs-AuNCs nanohybrids showed great application potential in environmental water monitoring in an efficient and green way.

Abstract:Sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were quickly synthesized by the microwave-assisted method from tri-ammonium citrate and thiourea. NSCDs showed a quantum yield of 11.5% with excitation and emission bands at 355 and 432 nm, respectively. Also, a fluorescence quenching was observed in the presence of Pb(II) ions, and the as-synthesized CDs were used as a sensitive probe for detecting Pb(II) in water and food samples. The results showed the optimal conditions for Pb(II) determination were CDs concentration of 0.02 mg mL−1 at pH 6.0–7.0 and an incubation time of 20 min. The relative fluorescence intensity of NSCDs was proportional to Pb(II) concentrations in the range of 0.029–2.40 and 2.40–14.4 µmol L−1 with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.998 and 0.955, respectively, and a detection limit of 9.2 × 10–3 µmol L−1. Responses were highly repeatable, with a standard deviation below 3.5%. The suggested method demonstrates the potential of a green, fast, and low-cost approach for Pb(II) determination in water, tea, and rice samples with satisfying results.

Abstract:The efficient detection of Fe 3+ and MnO 4 − in a water environment is very important and challenging due to their harmful effects on the health of humanity and environmental systems. Good biocompatibility, sensitivity, selectivity, and superior photophysical properties were important attributes of carbon dot-based CDs sensors for sensing applications. In this work, we synthesized N, P- co -doped carbon dots (N/P CDs) with guanosine 5′-monophosphate (GMP) as a green carbon source, with high fluorescence quantum yield in water (QY, 53.72%). First, the luminescent N/P CDs showed a three-state "on-off-on" fluorescence response upon the sequential addition of Fe 3+ and F − , with a low detection limit of 12 nM for Fe 3+ and 8.5 nM for F − , respectively. Second, the N/P CDs also exhibited desirable selectivity and sensitivity for toxic MnO 4 − detection with the limit of detection of 18.2 nM, through a turn-off mechanism. Moreover, the luminescent N/P CDs successfully monitored the aforementioned ions in environmental water samples and in Escherichia coli .

Abstract:The authors report on the microwave-assisted one-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) having a fluorescence quantum yield of 80% and a fluorescence lifetime of 15.0 ns. Citric acid and ethylenediamine were used as carbon source and as a nitrogen source, respectively. The N-CDs show excellent photostability over a wide range of pH values (4–11), even at high ion strength (2 M KCl) and after 4 h of continuous UV light irradiation. This makes these N-QDs promising candidates for fluorescent probes. Cellular toxicity test showed the N-CDs not to be cytotoxic to human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and human embryonic kidney cells even at 400 μg∙mL−1 levels after 48 h incubation. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs at 445 nm is quenched by Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite ions, respectively. The N-CDs are shown to be viable fluorescent probes for the ions Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite. Abstract:Heteroatom-doped carbon dots (CDs) with a high photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) have recently attracted attention due to their applications in chemical sensors, photocatalysis, bioimaging, and drug delivery. Nitrogen and phosphorus are in close proximity to carbon in the periodic table and are key tracking elements in the field of biomedical imaging. These two elements alter the optical and electronic properties of CDs and help improve the fundamental understanding of their PLQY. This can also lead to multifunctional usage in photoimaging and photothermal therapy. However, most PLQYs resulting from the synthesis of P-doped CDs are currently below 50%. These CDs have limited usefulness in the fields of bioimaging and drug delivery. In this study, a single-step, high-efficiency hydrothermal method was applied to synthesize nitrogen and phosphorous-doped carbon dots ((N,P)-CDs) with a PLQY of up to 53.8% with independent emission behavior. Moreover, the CDs presented high monodispersity, robust excitation-independent luminescence, and stability over a large pH range. Spectroscopic investigations indicated that the PLQY of the (N,P)-CDs was primarily due to the addition of P and the passivation effect of the oxidized surface. The excellent fluorescence properties of (N,P)-CDs can be effectively and selectively quenched by Hg2+ ions. Such systems show a linear response in the 0–900 nM concentration range with a short response time, indicating their potential for applications in the fields of chemistry and biology.

Abstract:A new N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) could be prepared by using the microwave-assisted technique within 10min without the need for any solvent or catalyst. The NCDs exhibited a highly sensitive electrochemical response toward dopamine (DA) in Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) (pH=6.5). The detection limit of DA was calculated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) as low as 1.2×10−9mol/L with a linear dynamic range of 5.0×10−8 to 8.0×10−6mol/L. These results suggested that this new NCDs could be effectively used for the direct and rapid detection of trace levels of DA in human serum and urine samples.
Facile synthesis of S, N-co-doped carbon dots for bio-imaging, Fe3+detection and DFT calculation

Abstract:Turning waste into wealth, herein, two highly fluorescent N and S co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B) were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of contaminant reactive red 2 (RR2) and L-cysteine or L-methionine, respectively. The detailed morphology and structure of N, S-CDs were characterized by XRD, Raman spectrum, FTIR spectra, TEM, HRTEM, AFM and XPS. The maximum fluorescent of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B are 565 and 615 nm under different excitation wavelengths with moderate fluorescence intensity of 14.0 % and 6.3 %, respectively. The microstructure models of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B, which were induced by FT-IR, XPS and element analysis, had been applied in DFT calculation. The result indicated that the doping of S and N is beneficial to obtain the red-shift of fluorescent spectra. Both N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B showed highly sensitive and selective to Fe3+. N, S-CDs-A can also detect Al3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, N, S-CDs-B was successfully applied in cell imaging.

Abstract:Developing a simple synthesis method and expanding the application of carbon dots have attracted increasing attention. In this report, we have developed a facile method to synthesize fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with the assistance of atmospheric-pressure microplasma. The CDs could be produced within a few minutes with no need of high temperature, external energy input, and multistep procedures. The as-prepared CDs had a relatively uniform size of approximately 2.3 nm. The FTIR spectrum and the XPS analysis showed that carbonyl groups and amide groups exist on the surface of CDs. The CDs showed bright blue luminescence and high stability in high salt concentration and low pH without further modification. A pH-dependent PL behavior was observed and could be applied for pH sensing in the range of 3-14. Moreover, the CDs could be utilized as a reagent capable of detecting U(vi) with a low detection limit and high selectivity.
Hydrothermal synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots with real-time live-cell imaging and blood-brain barrier penetration capabilities

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal treatment with citric acid in the presence of polyethylenimine. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the N-CDs were monodispersed and quasi-spherical with an average size of ~2.6 nm. Under ultraviolet irradiation the N-CDs emitted a strong blue luminescence with a quantum yield as high as 51%. Moreover, the N-CDs exhibited a negligible cytotoxicity and could be applied as efficient nanoprobes for real-time imaging of live cells. In addition, the ability of the N-CDs to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in a concentration-dependent manner was demonstrated using an in vitro BBB model. Therefore, these PEI-passivated N-CDs with real-time live-cell imaging and BBB-penetration capabilities hold promise for traceable drug delivery to the brain.

Abstract:In this study, a novel green fluorescent probe material, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method using walnut green skin as a carbon source and acetamide-glycolic acid deep eutectic solvent (AGADES) as a modifier. By covalent coupling, the amide chromophore in AGADES is designed to cover the surface of walnut green skin carbon quantum dots (W-CQDs), forming a fluorescence energy resonance effect and improving the fluorescence performance of the carbon quantum dots. The prepared N-CQDs have a uniform particle size distribution, and the fluorescence quantum efficiency has increased from 12.5% to 32.5%. Within the concentration range of 0.01~1000 μmol/L of Pb2+, the linear detection limit is 1.55 nmol/L, which can meet the trace detection of Pb2+ in the water environment, and the recycling rate reaches 97%. This method has been successfully applied to the fluorescence detection and reuse of Pb2+ in actual water bodies, providing new ideas and methods for the detection of heavy metal ions in environmental water.
Multi-functional ratiometric detection based on dual-emitting N-doped carbon dots

Abstract:Ratiometric fluorescence probes based on multi-emission carbon dots improve accuracy and sensitivity on detecting various environment issues. Herein, a novel dual-emitting N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was synthesized from citric acid and urea via a solvothermal method in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The blue and orange emissions of N-CDs in water were modulated, and pure white light-emitting with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) was achieved. The two PL centers behaved differently for Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ag+ ions, with the limit of detection (LOD) of ppm as fluorescence probes. Additionally, N-CDs displayed unique solvatochromism phenomenon. A new green emission appeared in organic solvents and gradually quenched with the increase of solvent polarity. The ratiometric PL displayed an excellent linear response for detecting water, and the LOD was between 0.003 % and 0.3 % in DMF, ethanol, isopropanol and N-methylpyrrolidone. Furthermore, N-CDs exhibited pH-sensitive response in the range of 4.0-7.0 and temperature-dependent response during heating-cooling cycles between 15 and 70 °C. A simple, efficient and reliable multi-functional ratiometric probe for detecting metal ions, water content, pH and temperature simultaneously was realized. However, there is a need for future application research to overcome the limitation imposed by the excitation wavelength of 330 nm.

Abstract:Green synthesis of red fluorescent carbon dots (R‐CDs) from red beans for Pb2+ probe applications is reported. Utilizing an eco‐friendly and sustainable approach, R‐CDs with high quantum yield (20.4%) and photostability are synthesized. These R‐CDs exhibit excitation‐independent emission, remarkable dispersibility, salt‐resistance, and temperature stability, making them promising fluorescent probes. The study highlights the potential of sustainable carbon sources in synthesizing high‐quality R‐CDs for sensing and imaging applications. Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a promising class of fluorescent nanomaterials. This study reports a green synthesis of red fluorescent CDs (R‐CDs) using an inexpensive and sustainable carbon source – red beans. The R‐CDs exhibits excellent optical properties and outperforms many other reported red‐emitting CDs in terms of high quantum yield (20.4%) and photostability. The R‐CDs show excitation‐independent emission behavior, indicating unique luminescent centers. The R‐CDs display remarkable dispersibility, salt‐resistance and temperature stability. Additionally, the R‐CDs demonstrate high selectivity toward Pb2+ detection with a low detection limit of 0.8 μM, expanding their application as fluorescent probes. Abstract:Stable blue fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with a very high quantum yield up to 81% has been reported for the first time. Novel N-CDs were synthesized through an efficient and rapid one-step hydrothermal synthesis process from diethylenetriamine as nitrogen source and a novel carbon source trans-aconitic acid. The nanosized particles of N-CDs were in the range of 2–8 nm and uniformly distributed in molecular level. The N-CDs showed high selectivity toward Fe3+ with low detection limit of 10.42 nmol L−1 (with corresponding linear range of 2–50 μmol L−1) enabling them for ion detection application and also exhibited high fluorescence stability in extreme pH conditions. Novel N-CDs also presented a green emission shift under acidic condition (pH~2) which makes them a potential sensing probe for security papers, food packaging and bio-medical detection sensors. A security paper sensor device has been fabricated and its operation function has been validated by making real time detection of color. The novel and facile to manufacture carbon dots has potential applications ranging from biological nano-sensors for security document to color-switch sensing and bio-imaging.

Abstract:Herein, red-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were prepared using p-phenylenediamine and polyethylene glycol 20000 as precursors. The N-CDs are spherical and uniformly distributed with average particle sizes of 2.36 nm. The N-CDs display excitation-independent fluorescence behavior with the optimal excitation and the maximum emission wavelengths centered at 487 and 628 nm, respectively. Results indicated that as prepared CDs can provide a rapid and highly selective recognition of Cu 2+ with the range of 45-70 μM and a detection (LOD) limit of 45.87 μM. A clear color change of the N-CDs solution (orange-red to black) can also be visualized by adding Cu 2+ . Moreover, a smartphone-based platform for the detection of Cu 2+ was developed to detect Cu 2+ in real time by analyzing RGB values, giving a linear range of 20-140 μM. and a LOD limit of 35.83 μM. In addition, it was applied for the detection of Cu 2+ in tap water, the recoveries were 86.18%-104.95%, and the relative standard deviations were 1.64%-2.43%. The N-CDs can be used to detect Cu 2+ in vitro and in vivo.

The CDs obtained were extremely fluorescent. The fluorescent carbon dots exhibited excitation-dependent behavior with the maximum excitation at 372 nm. The interaction of CDs was studied with different selected cations Al3+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Cr3+, Co2+, Cu2+, Cu+, Fe2+, Fe3+, K+, Sn4+, Na+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Sr2+, (NH4)6Mo7O24, 4H2O, Cr6+, Sb3+, Ba2+, Li+, and Mg2+. None of the ions studied showed any effect on its fluorescence intensity except Pb2+ which decreased its intensity. A direct relationship was found between Pb2+ concentrations and quenching of CDs intensity. Detection limit (DL) and quantification limits (QL) were determined as three and ten times of the standard deviation of the blank for ten number of measurements. DL and QL were found in the order 9.345 μM and 31.15 μM respectively. This linear behavior between quenching and Pb2+ concentration is useful for analytical purpose.

Abstract:A facile and rapid strategy was developed for the synthesis of ultrabright luminescent carbon nanodots (CDs) with tunable wavelength from 464 to 556 nm by introducing glutaraldehyde into the precursor solution under microwave irradiation. The fluorescence properties, including excitation and emission wavelength, quantum yield, and size of the CDs, were adjusted by changing the amount of glutaraldehyde and poly(ethylenimine). Several methods such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering, UV-vis, fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to study the morphology and the properties of CDs. The luminescence mechanism was also discussed. In addition, confocal microscopy imaging revealed that the as-prepared CDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in the cell imaging without obvious cytotoxicity. Moreover, a novel sensor for the detection of Co(2+) was proposed on the basis of Co(2+)-induced fluorescence quenching. These superior properties demonstrated the potential application of the CDs in cellular imaging and ion sensing.
