Abstract:Length-weight relationships (LWRs) were described for four fish species inhabiting the tributaries of the Dongting Lake, China. Fish were sampled using stationary gillnets (50 m long × 2.0 m high and mesh size: 2, 6, 10, and 14 cm) and lobster pots (18 m long × 0.33 m high × 0.45 m width and mesh size: 1 cm) twice a year from May 2021 to July 2023. All fishes were measured in the field immediately after collection for total length (L) to the nearest 0.1 cm and body weight (W) to the nearest 0.1 g. There was a strong correlation between total length and weight in all four species (r2 > 0.98). The values of parameter b in LWR ranged from 2.9709 to 3.4373. The LWR of Sinilabeo tungting, Acrossocheilus jishouensis, Onychostoma rara, and Onychostoma barbata provide new data for https://Fishbase.org and can be useful for establishing conservation measures of fish resources after fishing closure in the Dongting Lake basin, China.

Abstract:In this study, the length-weight relationships were determined for four fish species of the upper Yangtze River, Sichuan province, China. The fish were collected by drift net (mesh size: 4 cm × 4 cm) and ground bamboo cages (1 cm × 1 cm) from Yalong River, Laixi River, Pingtung River, and Baoxing River. Samples were collected from March 2017 to December 2022. According to the length-weight function equation ( W = a L b ), r2 values ranged from 0.960 to 0.991 and the b values of LWRs ranged from 2.916 (Megalobrama pellegrini) to 3.095 (Claea dabryi).

Abstract:Length–weight relationships and condition factors of giant tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon (Fabricius, 1798) from four breeding families (family S: South China seas family, family A: African family, family SA: ♂ South China seas family × ♀ Africa family, family AS: ♂ Africa family × ♀ South China seas family) were evaluated in this study. Length–weight relationships can be expressed as W = 0.0239BL2.789 (R 2 = 0.8977) in family S, W = 0.0206BL2.9107 (R 2 = 0.9107) in family A, W = 0.0211BL2.831 (R 2 = 0.8869) in family SA, and W = 0.0249BL2.781 (R 2 = 0.9159) in family AS. The growth of P. monodon from four breeding families follows a negative allometric trend. Fulton’s body condition factor (K) was not significantly different in males, while in females, the highest K (3.07) was observed in family AS, and the lowest K was found in family A (1.88). Results from the present study indicate that the cross group family AS (♂ Africa family × ♀ South China seas family) has obvious heterosis in females. This may suggest that the direction of further breeding of P. monodon, should be conducted by using Africa family as male parent, and South China seas family as female parent. Results from the present study will provide valuable information on selective breeding in P. monodon. Methodology used in the present study can also be applied in other similar species.

Abstract:The Qiantang River, located in Zhejiang Province, China, is a crucial water resource with significant ecological and economic importance. This study aimed to evaluate fishery resources in the Qiantang River Basin by analyzing the length‐weight relationships (LWRs) and length‐length relationships (LLRs) of 14 fish species. Fish samples were collected between July 2021 and November 2023 using multipanel nylon gillnets and cage nets. Each specimen was measured for total length (TL) and standard length (SL), as well as weighed. Linear regression models were employed to estimate LWRs and LLRs, with statistical tests revealing significant relationships (P < 0.05) and high R2 values above 0.91. The study contributed new LWRs for two species and LLRs for three, deepening our understanding of their biology. These findings enriched FishBase and offered valuable data for fish stock assessments and management strategies in the Qiantang River Basin. Future research can utilize this foundation to explore population dynamics and promote sustainable management practices.

Abstract:The length-weight relationships are reported for eight fish species, Hemimyzon yaotanensis (Fang, 1931), Leptobotia taeniops (Sauvage, 1878), Liobagrus nigricauda Regan, 1904, Pseudobagrus crassilabris (Gunther, 1864), Pseudobagrus pratti (Gunther, 1892), Pseudolaubucaengraulis (Nichols, 1925), Rhinogobiocylindricus Gunther, 1888, and Sinogastromyzonszechuanensis Fang, 1930. Specimens were collected from the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, southwest China during November 2010 to December 2015. Fish were sampled by various types of fishing gear (mesh size: 1-12cm) and baited hooks. Compared to the information in FishBase, length-weight relationships for two fish species and seven maximum lengths were presented here for the first time.

Fishes were collected using multipanel nylon gillnets with mesh sizes of 1–8 cm from November 2020 through August 2021. All fishes were measured for length (total length, TL; standard length, SL) to the nearest 0.1 cm and weight ( W ) to the nearest 0.1 g. The coefficients of determination R 2 of LWRs and LLRs were all over 0.950, and the 16 values of LWR parameter b were estimated from 2.505 to 3.364. Our study provides new information on LWRs for 2 species and LLRs for 7 species, as well as a new maximum total length recorded for 3 species for FishBase. This study would allow for the convenience of the conversion of TL– W and SL–TL in fish stock assessment and is expected to provide a useful baseline for further studies of population parameters to improve management decisions.

Abstract:The length-weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for 5 fish species of Gobioninae from the Yellow River and Huaihe River in Henan Province, China. All specimens were collected in August 2015 and June 2016, using three gillnets (25 x 1.5 m, mesh size 0.5 cm) and ten cages (0.3 x 0.3 x 10 m, mesh size 0.5 cm) at each time. Parameter b value of these 5 fish species collected in the Yellow River and Huaihe River ranged from 2.982 to 3.470, the correlation coefficient (r(2)) value ranged from 0.953 to 0.991. Statistical of LWRs for these 5 fish species from different populations were highly significant (p < 0.01).

Abstract:The length-weight relations (LWR) were estimated for 20 fish species from the Pearl River, South China. A total of 3610 specimens representing 10 families were used to estimate the relation parameters. The b values in the LWR (W = aLb) ranged from 2.068 for Odontamblyopus lacepedii (Temminck et Schlegel, 1845) to 3.423 for Pseudogobius javanicus (Bleeker, 1856). The LWR with high coefficient of determination (r2) is significant for all the species. The r2 value ranged from 0.919 to 0.993. This study presents the first reference on length-weight relations for 7 species and new records of maximum total length for 6 species. The results may be helpful in future fisheries studies in this areas.

Abstract:The length-weight relationships and new total length are described for five fish species in the Pengxi River basin of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Fish were occasionally sampled from five sites between 2009 and 2014, using various gill nets (mesh size range 2-12 cm) and electrofishing. For four of the five species studied a new maximum total length not yet recorded in previous length-weight estimates have been found. These data will help to convert length data from field studies in the Three Gorges Reservoir into weight and biomass.

Abstract:The study described the length–weight relationships (LWRs) and diversity status of fishes in the midstream of the Jialing River, which is the largest tributary of the upper Yangtze River, China. A total of 4592 specimens from 53 fish species belonging to three orders and eight families were collected from December 2021 to November 2022. The results showed that Culter oxycephaloides, Xenocypris davidi, Hemibarbus labeo, Hemiculter tchangi were dominant fish species in the study region. Twenty-five fish species (IRI ≥ 10) were subjected to LWR analysis, and the regression parameters a and b for fish species varied from 0.006 to 0.333 and 2.129 to 3.391. Eleven fish species were determined to have isometric growth, and 14 fish species were determined to have allometric growth. The diversity analyses suggested that the diversity status of fishes were kept relatively stable during the sampling period and that the fishes suffered moderate disturbance in the midstream of the Jialing River. The present study provided basic biology data for fish conservation and management after the fishing ban in the Jialing River.

Abstract:The Three Gorges Dam in the upper Yangtze River in China is the largest hydropower project in the world. Length- weight relationships (LWRs) are reported for fish species collected from three locations of the reservoir from November 2010 to October 2011. Fish were collected from the local fishing boats using 1.5 cm nylon mesh trap nets or 4, 5 and 6 cm nylon mesh gillnets (100- 120 m long × 1.4-1.5 m high). A total of 7,311 fish representing 49 species of 11 families were collected during the study period. There were 2,680 fish belonging to 32 species of 8 families sampled in Zigui (near the dam) reach, 2,845 fish representing 46 species of 8 families in Wanzhou (middle of the reservoir) reach and 1,786 fishes representing 38 species of 8 families in Fuling (upper reservoir) reach. The family with the highest number of species was Xenocyprididae. The intercept (a) and slope (b) of LWRs are useful in fisheries science in many ways. Therefore, the present study provides baseline data on LWRs of the economically valuable and most abundant fish species in the recently commissioned Three Gorges Reservoir.

Abstract:Twenty-nine native freshwater fish species belonging to the four orders and eight families were collected from the Hongshui River, which belongs to the upper reaches of the Pearl River, to analyze their length-weight relationships (LWRs). Twenty-nine freshwater native fish were sourced using cages (0.2 m in height, 0.25 m in width, and 8 m in length, with a mesh size of 5 mm) and triple gillnets (20–40 m long, 1–3 m high, and mesh size, 2−3 cm) between December 2021 and July 2022. For each freshwater fish, the total length (TL) and weight were measured to the nearest 1.0 mm and 0.1 g. All LWR parameters of the twenty-nine species were statistically significant P < 0.001 . The length-weight relationships for the nine species were new to the FishBase and new maximum lengths were recorded for the twenty species. The LWR values provided for the first time will help to validate the accuracy and predictability of the Bayesian models for estimating the species-specific growth parameters of the data-poor species.

Abstract:The length–weight relationships (LWR) and other morphological traits for 6417 specimens in 74 fish species collected seasonally, from July 2020 to April 2021, in the mangrove of Dongzhaigang Bay, Hainan Province, China, are presented. This involved, for all species, a sample size, and minimum and maximum lengths; in addition, for most species, it involved linear relationships between the standard length and body height and width, the height of the caudal peduncle, the pectoral fin length, and the eye diameter. This extensive coverage of mangrove-resident fish species (as opposed to species using the mangrove only as a nursery) is a first for Hainan. The various morphological traits of the mangrove fish are, for several species, the first to be published since these species’ original descriptions.

Abstract:The length-weight relationship and allometric growth patterns of hatchery-reared Chinese loach, Paramisgurnus dabryanus (Dabry de Thiersant, 1872), were determined from hatching to 60 days after hatching. A best power model was estimated for the length-weight relationship during the early life stages. Positive allometric growth for the head segment, trunk length, tail length and eye diameter was also found in the early life stages, while body depth, tail depth, tail fin length, pectoral fin length and barbel length displayed a negative coefficient. During the subsequent early developmental stage, the growth coefficients showed a clear and common tendency towards isometry for all measured body ratios. The allometric growth changes in Chinese loach during the early stage are possibly the result of selective organogenesis directed towards survival priorities.
Comparison of Morphological Characteristics Between Paramisguruns Dabryanus and Misguruns Anguillicaudatus in Zhoushan Islands

Abstract:Loach samples with the body length of 7.1~18.7 cm and body weight of 3.2~55.6g were collected in Zhoushan Islands.According to the lateral-line of loach,127 Paramisguruns dubryanus and 136 Misguruns anguilliaudatuses were distinguished.After grouping the loaches by body length,the body length(BL),body height(BH),length of caudal peduncle(CPL),head length(HL),snout length(SL),length of mouth beard(MBL),head length(HL) were recorded.The data of BL/BH,CPL/CPH,HL/SL,MBL/HL were analyzed.The results showed that CPL of P.dabryanus was 1.07±0.10 times more than CPH and CPL of M.anguillicaudatus was 1.84±0.12 times more than the CPH;MBL/HL of P.dabryanus and M.anguillicaudatus was 1.05±0.11 and 0.54±0.11,CPL and MBL/HL the two loaches were significantly different.

Abstract:Abstract Fish culture in paddy fields is a traditional aquaculture mode, which has a long history in East Asia. Large-scale loach ( Paramisgurnus dabryanus ) fast growth is suitable for paddy fields aquaculture in China. The objective of this study was to identify differential expression genes (DEGs) in the brain, liver and muscle tissues between large (LG, top 5% of maximum total length) and small (SG, top 5% of minimum total length) groups using RNA-seq. In total, 150 fish were collected each week and 450 fish were collected at twelfth week from three paddy fields for all the experimental. Histological observation found that the muscle fibre diameter of LG loaches was greater than that of SG loaches. Transcriptome results revealed that the high expression genes (HEGs) in LG loaches (fold change ≥ 2, p < 0.05) were mainly concentrated in metabolic pathways, such as “Thyroid hormone signalling pathway”, “Citrate cycle (TCA cycle)”, “Carbon metabolism”, “Fatty acid metabolism”, and “Cholesterol metabolism”, and the HEGs in SG loaches were enriched in the pathways related to environmental information processing such as “Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs)”, “ECM− receptor interaction” and “Rap1 signalling pathway”; cellular processes such as “Tight junction”, “Focal adhesion”, “Phagosome” and “Adherens junction”. Furthermore, IGFs gene family may play an important role in loach growth for their different expression pattern between the two groups. These findings can enhance our understanding about the molecular mechanism of different growth and development levels of loaches in paddy fields.

Abstract:Otolith is important for studying fish populations and life histories. In this study, the dominant species of Schizothorax grahami in the source section of the Chishui River was taken to understand the relationships between otolith morphology and total length (TL). Results showed a large difference between the four TL groups (A/B/C/D), except group B is similar to group C. The combined discrimination success rate of linear discriminant analysis was 62.2%. Group A and D’s success rate is the highest, at around 75%. Meanwhile, the success rate for Group B and Group C is below 65%. The one-way ANOVA of the Shape Index and the Canonical analysis of Principal Coordinates with two coefficients (Fourier coefficients and Wavelet coefficients) showed that Group B is similar to Group C, with a large difference from the other two groups. When TL was greater than 100 mm (the pearl organs appearing), the otolith growth was lower changing. Otolith morphology still changes with growth after sexual maturity in fish, so the larger fish is more useful for conducting otolith morphology studies for accurate evaluation and management of local fishery resources.
