Abstract:Let OEg (resp. CEg and AE(g)) and resp. OEgo be the maximum order of finite (resp. cyclic and abelian) groups G acting on the closed orientable surfaces Sigma(g) which extend over (S-3, Sigma(9)) among all embeddings Sigma(g) -> S-3 and resp. unknotted embeddings Sigma(g) -> S-3.It is known that OEgo <= 12(g - 1), and we show that 12(g - 1) is reached for an unknotted embedding Sigma(g) -> S-3 if and only if g = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 17, 25, 97, 121, 241, 601. Moreover AE(g) is 2g+2; and CEg is 2g+2 for even g, and 2g - 2 for odd g. Efforts are made to see intuitively how these maximal symmetries are embedded into the symmetries of the 3-sphere. Abstract:We consider orientation-preserving actions of finite groups G on pairs (S-3, Sigma), where Sigma denotes a compact connected surface embedded in S3. In a previous paper, we considered the case of closed, necessarily orientable surfaces, determined for each genus g > 1 the maximum order of such a G for all embeddings of a surface of genus g, and classified the corresponding embeddings. In the present paper we obtain analogous results for the case of bordered surfaces Sigma (i.e. with non-empty boundary, orientable or not). Now the genus g gets replaced by the algebraic genus alpha of Sigma (the rank of its free fundamental group); for each alpha > 1 we determine the maximum order m(alpha) of an action of G, classify the topological types of the corresponding surfaces (topological genus, number of boundary components, orientability) and their embeddings into S-3. For example, the maximal possibility 12(alpha - 1) is obtained for the finitely many values alpha = 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 25, 97, 121 and 241. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group acting on a connected compact surface $\Sigma$, and $M$ be an integer homology 3-sphere. We show that if each element of $G$ is extendable over $M$ with respect to a fixed embedding $\Sigma\rightarrow M$, then $G$ is extendable over some $M'$ which is 1-dominated by $M$. From this result, in the orientable category we classify all periodic automorphisms of closed surfaces that are extendable over the 3-sphere. The corresponding embedded surface of such an automorphism can always be a Heegaard surface.

Abstract:We consider the orientation-preserving actions of finite groups G on pairs (S^3, Γ ) , where Γ is a connected graph of genus g>1 , embedded in S^3 . For each g we give the maximum order m_g of such G acting on (S^3, Γ ) for all such Γ⊂ S^3 . Indeed we will classify all graphs Γ⊂ S^3 which realize these m_g in different levels: as abstract graphs and as spatial graphs, as well as their group actions. Such maximum orders without the condition “orientation-preserving” are also addressed.

Abstract:We consider large finite group-actions on surfaces and discuss and compare various notions for such actions: Hurwitz actions and Hurwitz groups; maximal reducible and completely reducible actions; bounding and geometrically bounding actions; maximal handlebody groups and maximal bounded surface groups; in particular, we discuss small simple groups of various types. A Hurwitz group is a finite group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of maximal possible order $84(g-1)$ of a closed orientable surface of genus $g>1$. A maximal handlebody group instead is a group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of maximal possible order $12(g-1)$ of a 3-dimensional handlebody of genus $g>1$. Among others, we consider the question of when a Hurwitz group acting on a surface of genus $g$ contains a subgroup of maximal possible order $12(g-1)$ extending to a handlebody (or, more generally, a maximal reducible group extending to a product with handles), and show that such Hurwitz groups are closely related to the smallest Hurwitz group ${\rm PSL}_2(7)$ of order 168 acting on Klein's quartic of genus 3. We discuss simple groups of small order which are maximal handlebody groups and, more generaly, maximal reducible groups. We discuss also the problem of which Hurwitz actions bound geometrically, and in particular whether Klein's quartic bounds geometrically: does there exist a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with totally geodesic boundary isometric to Klein's quartic? Finally, large bounding and non-bounding actions on surfaces of genus 2, 3 and 4 are discussed in section 3.

Abstract:The symmetries of surfaces which can be embedded into the symmetries of the 3-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ3 are easier to feel by human’s intuition. We give the maximum order of finite group actions on (ℝ3, Σ) among all possible embedded closed/bordered surfaces with given geometric/algebraic genus greater than 1 in ℝ3. We also identify the topological types of the bordered surfaces realizing the maximum order, and find simple representative embeddings for such surfaces.

Abstract:Let $F_g$ be the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. We address the problem to extend torsion elements of the mapping class group ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$ over the 4-sphere $S^4$. Let $w_g$ be a torsion element of maximum order in ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$. Results including: (1) For each $g$, $w_g$ is periodically extendable over $S^4$ for some non-smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$, and not periodically extendable over $S^4$ for any smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$. (2) For each $g$, $w_g$ is extendable over $S^4$ for some smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$ if and only if $g=4k, 4k+3$. (3) Each torsion element of order $p$ in ${\mathcal{M}}(F_g)$ is extendable over $S^4$ for some smooth embedding $e: F_g\to S^4$ if either (i) $p=3^m$ and $g$ is even; or (ii) $p=5^m$ and $g\ne 4k+2$; or (iii) $p=7^m$. Moreover the conditions on $g$ in (i) and (ii) can not be removed .

Abstract:If a finite group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 3-dimensional torus leaves invariant an oriented, closed, embedded surface of genus g>1 and preserves the orientation of the surface, then its order is bounded from above by 12(g-1). In the present paper we classify (up to conjugation) all such group actions and surfaces for which the maximal possible order 12(g-1) is achieved, and note that the unknotted surfaces can be realized by equivariant minimal surfaces in a 3-torus.

Abstract:Suppose an orientation-preserving action of a finite group G on the closed surface $\Sigma _g$ of genus $g>1$ extends over the 3-torus $T^3$ for some embedding $\Sigma _g\subset T^3$. Then $|G|\le 12(g-1)$, and this upper bound $12(g-1)$ can be achieved for $g=n^2+1, 3n^2+1, 2n^3+1, 4n^3+1, 8n^3+1, n\in {\mathbb {Z}}_+$. The surfaces in $T^3$ realizing a maximal symmetry can be either unknotted or knotted. Similar problems in the non-orientable category are also discussed. The connection with minimal surfaces in $T^3$ is addressed and the situation when the maximally symmetric surfaces above can be realized by minimal surfaces is identified.

Abstract:We prove the existence of finite groups acting freely as orientation‐preserving homeomorphisms on closed orientable surfaces that extend as a group of homeomorphisms of some compact orientable 3‐manifold but that cannot extend to a handlebody. This solves a basic problem in low‐dimensional equivariant topology going back to the work of Reni and Zimmermann in the mid‐1990s.

Abstract:Call a periodic map h on the closed orientable surface Σ g extendable if h extends to a periodic map over the pair (S 3,Σ g ) for possible embeddings e: Σ g → S 3. The authors determine the extendabilities for all periodical maps on Σ2. The results involve various orientation preserving/reversing behalves of the periodical maps on the pair (S 3,Σ g ). To do this the authors first list all periodic maps on Σ2, and indeed the authors exhibit each of them as a composition of primary and explicit symmetries, like rotations, reflections and antipodal maps, which itself should be interesting. A by-product is that for each even g, the maximum order periodic map on Σ g is extendable, which contrasts sharply with the situation in the orientation preserving category.

Abstract:The natural automorphism group of a translation surface is its group of translations. For finite translation surfaces of genus g > 1 the order of this group is naturally bounded in terms of g due to a Riemann-Hurwitz formula argument. In analogy with classical Hurwitz surfaces, we call surfaces which achieve the maximal bound Hurwitz translation surfaces. We study for which g there exist Hurwitz translation surfaces of genus g.

Abstract:A periodic automorphism of a surface $\Sigma$ is said to be extendable over $S^3$ if it extends to a periodic automorphism of the pair $(S^3,\Sigma)$ for some possible embedding $\Sigma\to S^3$. We classify and construct all extendable automorphisms of closed surfaces, with orientation-reversing cases included. Moreover, they can all be induced by automorphisms of $S^3$ on Heegaard surfaces. As a by-product, the embeddings of surfaces into lens spaces are discussed.

Abstract:It is known that an automorphism of $F_g$, the oriented closed surface of genus $g$, is extendable over the 4-sphere $S^4$ if and only if it has a bounding invariant spin structure \cite{WsWz}. We show that each automorphism of $F_g$ has an invariant spin structure, and obtain a stably extendable result: Each automorphism of $F_g$ is extendable over $S^4$ after a connected sum with the identity map on the torus. Then each automorphism of an oriented once punctured surface is extendable over $S^4$. For each $g\neq 4$, we construct a periodic map on $F_g$ that is not extendable over $S^4$, and we prove that every periodic map on $F_4$ is extendable over $S^4$, which answer a question in \cite{WsWz}. We illustrate for an automorphism $f$ of $F_g$, how to find its invariant spin structures, bounding or not; and once $f$ has a bounding invariant spin structure, how to construct an embedding $F_g\hookrightarrow S^4$ so that $f$ is extendable with respect to this embedding.

On high genus extensions of Negami's conjecture

Abstract:Negami's famous planar cover conjecture is equivalent to the statement that a connected graph can be embedded in the projective plane if and only if it has a projective planar cover. In 1999, Hliněný proposed extending this conjecture to higher genus non-orientable surfaces. In this paper, we put forward a natural extension that encompasses orientable surfaces as well; for every compact surface $\Sigma$, a connected graph $G$ has a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ if and only if $G$ is embeddable in a surface covered by $\Sigma$. As evidence toward this, we prove that for every surface $\Sigma$, the connected graphs with a finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ have bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we show that these extensions of Negami's conjecture are decidable for every compact surface of sufficiently large Euler genus, surpassing what is known for Negami's original conjecture. We also prove the natural analogue for countable graphs embeddable into a compact (orientable) surface. More precisely, we prove that a connected countable graph $G$ has a finite ply cover that embeds into a compact (orientable) surface if and only if $G$ embeds into a compact (orientable) surface. Our most general theorem, from which these results are derived, is that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for every surface $\Sigma$, there exists a decreasing function $p_\Sigma:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $\lim_{g\to \infty}p_\Sigma(g) =0$ such that every finite cover embeddable in $\Sigma$ of any connected graph with Euler genus $g\ge c$ has ply at most $p_\Sigma(g)$.

Computing equivalence classes of finite group actions on orientable surfaces: A dynamic survey

Abstract:This paper focuses on the classification of classes of topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. By the Riemann-Hurwitz bound, there are just finitely many groups that act conformally on a closed orientable surface $\mathcal{S}_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. With each such action of a group $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ one can associate the fundamental group $\Gamma=\pi(\mathcal{O})$ of the quotient orbifold $\mathcal{O}=\mathcal{S}_g/\mathrm{G}$, isomorphic to a Fuchsian group determined completely by orbifold's signature. The Riemann existence theorem reduces the problem of the existence of an action of $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ to a purely group-theoretical problem of deciding whether there is an smooth epimorphism mapping the Fuchsian group $\Gamma$ onto the group $\mathrm{G}$. Using computer algebra systems such as \textsc{Magma} or GAP, together with the library of small groups, the generation of all finite group actions on a surface of fixed small genus $g\geq 2$ becomes almost a routine procedure. The difficult part is to determine the classes of these actions with respect to topological equivalence. To achieve this, one needs to investigate the action of the automorphism group of a Fuchsian group on the set of finite group actions on $\mathcal{S}_g$ with the corresponding signature. In this paper we derive several results on the topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. As an application, we derive complete lists of finite group actions of genus $g\leq 9$ distinguished up to the topological equivalence. A summary of the actions can be found in Appendix, the reader interested in more details is referred to the web page [22]. It is expected that we will be able to extend the list to higher genera, refreshed partial results are available on the web page. The following text is an extended version of the paper [23].

Finite Groups of Symplectic Automorphisms of Supersingular K3 surfaces in Odd Characteristics

Abstract:In 2009, Dolgachev-Keum show that finite groups of tame symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces in positive characteristics are subgroups of the Mathieu group of degree 23 under mild conditions. In this paper, we utilize lattice-theoretic methods to investigate symplectic actions of finite groups G on K3 surfaces in odd characteristics. In the tame cases (i.e., the order of G is coprime with p) and all the superspecial cases, one can associate with the action a Leech pair which can be detected via Höhn-Mason's list. Notice that the superspecial cases have been resolved by Ohashi-Schütt. If the K3 surface is supersingular with Artin invariant at least two, we develop a new machinery called p-root pairs to detect possible symplectic finite group actions (without the assumption of tameness). The concept of p-root pair is closely related to root systems and Weyl groups. In particular, we recover many results by Dolgachev-Keum with a different method and give an upper bound for the exponent of p in |G|.
