Abstract:Although low-protein diets can improve the nitrogen utilization efficiency and alleviate economic pressures in ruminants, they may also negatively impact dairy performance. Rumen-protected lysine (RPL) supplementation can improve the health status and growth performance of ruminants without compromising nitrogen utilization efficiency and feed intake. In this study, a total of thirty-three multiparous dairy goats in the late-lactation period were randomly divided into three groups that were separately fed the control diet (namely the protein-adequacy group), the low-protein diet (namely the protein-deficient group), and the RPL-supplemented protein-deficient diet (namely RPL-supplementation group) for five weeks. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanisms regarding how low-protein diets with RPL supplementation compromise lactation phenotypes in dairy goats through cross-tissue transcriptomic analyses. Dietary protein deficiency caused an imbalance in amino acid (AA) intake, disrupted hepatic function, and impaired milk synthesis. Transcriptomic analyses further showed that RPL supplementation exhibited some beneficial effects, like mitigating abnormal lipid and energy metabolism in the liver, elevating hepatic resistance to oxidative stress, improving the mammary absorption of AAs, as well as activating mammary lipid and protein anabolism primarily through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) and janus kinase-signal transducer (JAK)—signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling, respectively. RPL supplementation of a low-protein diet contributes to maintaining late lactation in dairy goats primarily through mitigating hepatic energy disturbances and activating both lipid and protein metabolism in the mammary glands. Since RPL supplementation initiated a series of comprised events on mammary protein and lipid metabolism as well as the hepatic function and energy generation in dairy goats under protein deficiency during late lactation, these findings thus provide some insights into how RPL supplementation helps maintain milk production and health in dairy mammals especially at late lactation.
Effect of Full Goat Lactoprotein Formula on Growth and Development of Infants

Abstract:[Objective] To study the effect of the full goat lactoprotein formula on growth and development of infants.[Method]A total of 40 artificial feeding infants aged 0—3 months old in Beijing Shunyi district were recruited and randomly divided into 2 groups,which was full goat lactoprotein formula group fed with full goat lactoprotein formula for 6 months,and cow-milk formula group fed with cow-milk formula for 6 months.General information of mothers and infants were surveyed by a self-designed questionnaire.Height,body weight,head circumference,chest circumference,abdomen circumference,bregma,skinfold thickness of infants in both groups were measured after feeding for 3 months and 6 months,respectively.At the same time,peripheral blood calcium,magnesium,zinc,iron,and copper were examined.[Result] After 3 months feeding,the body weight gain,chest circumference growth,subscapular and parumbilical skinfold thickness growth of infants in full goat lactoprotein formula group were significantly higher than those in cow-milk formula group(P < 0.05),as well as the calcium content in peripheral blood(P < 0.05).After 6 months feeding,body weight gain,head circumference and chest circumference growth of infants in full goat lactoprotein formula group were still higher than those in cow-milk formula group(P < 0.05).[Conclusion] Results showed that compared with cow-milk formula,the full goat lactoprotein formula might exert accelerated effect on the growth and development of infants.
Effects of Glutamine and Clostridium Butyricum on Growth Performance, Immune Function, Small Intestinal Morphology and Microflora in Weanling Piglets.

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of glutamine(Gln) and Clostridium butyricum(CB) on growth performance,immune function,small intestinal morphology and cecal microflora in weanling piglets.Two hundred and eighty-eight piglets weaned at the age of 21 d were randomly divided into four groups with three replicates in every group and twenty-four piglets in every replicate.The four groups were basal diet group(CT),basal diet+1% glutamine group(GT),basal diet+500 mg/kg Clostridium butyricum group(CBT),and basal diet+1% glutamine+500 mg/kg Clostridium butyricum group(GCT),respectively.The results were showed as follows: 1) during 14 to 21 d and 0 to 21 d after weaned,the average daily gain(ADG) of GT and GCT was significantly higher than that of CT,the ADG of GCT was significantly higher than that of CBT,and the feed to gain ratio of GCT was significantly lower than that of CT.2) On the 7th day after weaned,the concentration of complement 4(C4) in GCT and SOD activity in GT,CBT and GCT were significantly higher than those in CT,meanwhile,the T-AOC in CBT and GCT were significantly higher than that in CT.On the 14th day after weaned,the lysozyme activity,the concentration of complement 3(C3) and T-AOC in GT,CBT and GCT were significantly higher than those in CT;the concentration of C4 and SOD activity in GT and GCT were significantly higher than those in CT,respectively.3) On the 7th day after weaned,the villus height of duodenum in GT,CBT and GCT were significantly increased compared with that in CT(P0.05);the villus height of ileum in CBT was increased significantly compared with that in CT(P0.05);the crypt depth of jejunum and ileum in GCT were significantly reduced compared with those in CT(P0.05).On the 14th day after weaned,the villus height of duodenum and ileum in GCT were significantly increased compared with those in CT(P0.05),while the crypt depth of duodenum and ileum in GCT were significantly reduced compared with those in CT(P0.05).4) On the 14th day after weaned,the number of E.coli in GCT was significantly less than that in CT(P0.05),while the number of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus were significantly larger than those in CT(P0.05).
Effect of Dynamic Regulation of Viscosity and Nutritional Ingredients of Milk-Substitutes on Artificial Rearing of Germfree Rats

Abstract:A program was established for artificial rearing(AR) of germfree rat pups according to the law of rat pups' suck.Six kinds of milk-substitutes(LWF) for pups at different ages were prepared.Their major nutrient compositions and viscosity were determined.Under axenic conditions,30 cesarean-derived pups were reared artificially by suck feeding until weaning,while 30 pups were reared by foster mothers as controls.The body weight gain and the early neonatal body development were observed every day.Survival rates were calculated.Fertility was tested when 8 pairs of AR rats were over 100 days old.Except for LWF-6,other LWFs were comparable to rat's milk in the concentrations of protein,fat,carbohydrate,the major minerals,gross energy and pH.From LWF-1 to LWF-5, the contents of protein,fat,carbohydrate,energy and viscosity increased gradually.Although the AR rats grew less well than the mother-reared(MR) pups(at age of 2 days,P0.05;at age of 3 days,P0.01),development of these pups was normal.Survival rate of AR rats was 73.3%,that of MR was 100% when weaning.All the mated rats had normal fertility.It is indicated that dynamic regulation of viscosity and concentrations of the macronutrients of LWF may be suit for artificial rearing of germfree rats with high survival rate.

Abstract:This study evaluated the effects of inoculation with adult goat ruminal fluid on growth, health, gut microbiota and serum metabolism in lambs during the first 15 days of life. Twenty four Youzhou dark newborn lambs were selected and randomly distributed across 3 treatments ( n = 8/group): autoclaved goat milk inoculated with 20 mL sterilized normal saline (CON), autoclaved goat milk inoculated with 20 mL fresh ruminal fluid (RF) and autoclaved goat milk inoculated with 20 mL autoclaved ruminal fluid (ARF). Results showed that RF inoculation was more effective at promoting recovery of body weight. Compared with CON, greater serum concentrations of ALP, CHOL, HDL and LAC in the RF group suggested a better health status in lambs. The relative abundance of Akkermansia and Escherichia-Shigella in gut was lower in the RF group, whereas the relative abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group tended to increase. Metabolomics analysis shown that RF stimulated the metabolism of bile acids, small peptides, fatty acids and Trimethylamine-N-Oxide, which were found the correlation relationship with gut microorganisms. Overall, our study demonstrated that ruminal fluid inoculation with active microorganisms had a beneficial impact on growth, health and overall metabolism partly through modulating the gut microbial community.

Abstract:Objective: To compare the growth and nutritional status of infants fed goat milk-based formula (GMF) and cow milk-based formula (CMF).Methods: The study was conducted in Beijing, China. It was a double-blind randomized controlled trial. A total of 79 infants aged 0-3 months old were recruited and randomized in GMF or CMF group. The infants were fed the allocated formula to 6 months. The weight, length, and head circumference were measured at the enrolment, 3 and 6 months. The start time and types of solid food were recorded. Blood elements, urinal, and fecal parameters were also tested.Results: The average weight of infants in the GMF group (mean +/- SD) was 4.67 +/- 0.99 kg and in the CMF group 4.73 +/- 1.10 kg at enrolment, and 8.75 +/- 0.98 kg (GMF) and 8.92 +/- 0.88 kg (CMF) at 6 months. There were no differences in the adjusted intention-to-treat analyses of weight, length, head circumference, and BMI z-scores between the two formula-fed groups over the 6-month study. Similarly, there were no remarkable differences in the timing and types of solid food, blood elements, urinal, and feces parameters, between the GMF and CMF group. No group differences have been shown in bowel motion consistency, duration of crying, ease of settling, or frequency of adverse events.Conclusions: GMF-provided growth and nutritional outcomes did not differ from those provided by CMF.
Effects of Repeated Oral Inoculation of Artificially Fed Lambs with Lyophilized Rumen Fluid on Growth Performance, Rumen Fermentation, Microbial Population and Organ Development

Abstract:Early life development and growth are critical in determining the lifelong growth performance and health of ruminants, and weaning poses the greatest challenge to young animals and has the most profound consequence. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of microbial intervention on the growth and development of young lambs and their rumen microbiota as they went through weaning. Forty-eight lambs were allocated to two groups, with one group being orally inoculated with lyophilized rumen fluid, and the other receiving no inoculation served as the control. Growth performance, rumen fermentation characteristics, and carcass measurements were determined weekly one week before and two weeks after weaning. We also determined the population dynamics of total bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and select genera and species of known rumen bacteria and assessed the temporal changes in the activities of glucanase (both endo- and exo-), xylanase, beta-glucosidase, and amylase in the rumen content. Our results showed that the early life inoculation significantly increased the apparent digestibility of feed dry matter and crude protein before weaning, and post-weaning crude protein digestibility remained elevated in the inoculated lambs compared to the control lambs. Starch digestibility tended to be higher in the inoculated lambs than in the control lambs two weeks after weaning. Molar proportion of ruminal propionate and amylolytic enzyme activity were higher in the inoculated lambs than in the control lambs after weaning. Different temporal fluctuation patterns of Megasphaera elsdenii and Selenomonas ruminantium, and a lower abundance of Ruminococcus flavefaciens were noted in the rumen of the inoculated lambs compared to the control lambs after weaning. The development of internal organs, including the lower gut and liver, was also stimulated by the inoculation. In conclusion, some rumen bacterial populations of young lambs were clearly affected by the inoculation with rumen microbiota, which could contribute to the digestion of the nonstructural carbohydrates available in the starter feed. Improved digestion of starter feed may enhance the energy and nutrient harvest and utilization in young ruminants during the critical weaning phase.
Comparison of the Effects of Different Infant Formulas on the Growth and Development and Intestinal Flora of Infants

Abstract:Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different infant formulas on the growth and development, sleep, allergy symptoms, and intestinal flora of infants. A total of 428 infants participated in the study. Breastfeeding (BF) was used as the control, and the remaining subjects were randomly assigned to the full goat milk protein formula group (FGM), partial goat milk protein formula group (PGM), and cow milk formula group (M). During the 6‐month feeding experiment, data on the growth, sleep, allergy symptoms, and intestinal flora of infants were collected using questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical examinations. In general, the basic information of the participants was consistent among the groups. There were no differences in infant weight, length, or head circumference among the groups (p > .05). The sleep time of infants in the formula‐fed groups was longer than that of the breastfeeding group at baseline (p < .05), but there were no differences at mid‐term or outcome (p > .05). The incidence of allergic symptoms continued to decrease, and the total scores of allergic symptoms did not differ among the groups (p > .05). The relative abundance of intestinal Bifidobacteriaceae in the PGM group was lower than that in the other groups (p < .05). There was no difference in the β‐diversity of intestinal flora between formula‐fed and breastfed infants (p > .05). There were strong correlations in the composition of the main intestinal flora at the family level between the formula and breastfeeding groups. This study showed that within 6 months of feeding, there were no significant differences in the growth and development, allergic symptoms, or intestinal flora of the infants among the groups.
Milk Fat Globule Membrane Supplementation in Formula-fed Rat Pups Improves Reflex Development and May Alter Brain Lipid Composition

Abstract:Human milk contains nutritional, immunoprotective and developmental components that support optimal infant growth and development. The milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is one unique component, comprised of a tri-layer of polar lipids, glycolipids, and proteins, that may be important for brain development. MFGM is not present in most infant formulas. We tested the effects of bovine MFGM supplementation on reflex development and on brain lipid and metabolite composition in rats using the “pup in a cup” model. From postnatal d5 to d18, rats received either formula supplemented with MFGM or a standard formula without MFGM; a group of mother-reared animals was used as reference/control condition. Body and brain weights did not differ between groups. MFGM supplementation reduced the gap in maturation age between mother-reared and standard formula-fed groups for the ear and eyelid twitch, negative geotaxis and cliff avoidance reflexes. Statistically significant differences in brain phospholipid and metabolite composition were found at d13 and/or d18 between mother-reared and standard formula-fed groups, including a higher phosphatidylcholine:phosphatidylethanolamine ratio, and higher phosphatidylserine, glycerol-3 phosphate, and glutamine in mother-reared compared to formula-fed pups. Adding MFGM to formula narrowed these differences. Our study demonstrates that addition of bovine MFGM to formula promotes reflex development and alters brain phospholipid and metabolite composition. Changes in brain lipid metabolism and their potential functional implications for neurodevelopment need to be further investigated in future studies.

Abstract:Enhancing gastrointestinal health, immunity, and digestion are key factors to support dairy goat kid performance. Several additives have been studied in relation to these actions. This study investigated the impact of mannan-rich fraction (MRF) inclusion in goat milk on the growth performance, gut health, rumen fermentation and microbial profiles of Xinong Saanen dairy goat kids. Eighty kids aged 14 d and 4.72 ± 0.33 kg body weight (BW) were randomly assigned into 2 groups: Control and MRF (1g/d MRF mixed into milk), each group consisted of 40 kids with 10 kids per pen. All kids were given milk individually and fed starter diet by pen, with the trial lasting 10 weeks. BW and blood samples were collected on the 7th day at 2, 6, 10 and 12 weeks of age, and feed intake was determined daily. From the 1st to 7th day at 12 weeks of age, fecal samples were collected on 4 kids from each group to analyze nutrient digestibility. On the 7th day of 12 weeks of age, 4 kids from each group were slaughtered for evaluation of rumen fermentation, rumen microbiota and gut morphology. The results indicated that MRF supplementation led to greater overall BW (P < 0.01), overall starter dry matter intake (DMI) (P < 0.01) and overall average daily gain (ADG) (P = 0.021), while showing lower overall diarrhea rate (P < 0.01). However, no difference in overall feed efficiency (FE) (P = 0.063) and apparent digestibility of nutrients was observed (P > 0.05). Furthermore, MRF supplementation resulted in increased ileal villus height (P = 0.05), and higher RNA expression of Claudin-1 and Occuldin in the duodenum (P < 0.05), ZO-1, JAM-2, and Occuldin in the jejunum (P < 0.05), and Claudin-1, JAM-2, and Occuldin in the ileum (P < 0.05). Additionally, the concentrations of overall IgA, overall IgM and overall IgG were higher in the MRF group (P < 0.01). The concentrations of ruminal acetate and total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) were higher with MRF supplementation (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, supplementation with MRF resulted in higher abundance of Bacteroidetes and Succinivibrio, but lower abundance of Firmicutes and Succiniclasticum in the rumen. In conclusion, growth performance, gut health, immunity, and ruminal microbial structure of dairy goat kids benefited from MRF supplementation.
Influence of infant formula on reproductive development of rats]

Abstract:To identify the effects of infant formula on the reproductive development of Spraque-Dawley rats.A two-generation reproductive test was carried out. Forty 4 week-old SD rats were divided into two groups randomly by body weight and maintained on diet containing a kind of infant formula or an adjusted basal feeds. The body weight, dietary intake, hormone level, function of reproductive organs, and the development status of the P generation rats and F1 generation rats were measured.No significant growth-promoting effect was observed in the infant formula group; and no impairment on reproductive organ development or development status in the P generation and F1 generation rats was caused by the infant formula. The body weight at the 14th day of gestation and at the 0th and 4th day of lactation in infant formula group was significantly lower than that in control group (P < 0.05). The level of prolactin was significantly lower in the infant formula group. The AGD of F2a female rats was significantly shorter in the infant formula group.There was few effect of the infant formula on the reproductive development of SD rats, further study is required to determine the effects of infant formula on the body weight change during gestation period and lactation period, AGD and prolactin level.
Preliminary Results on the Effects of Soybean Isoflavones on Growth Performance and Ruminal Microbiota in Fattening Goats

Abstract:Soybean isoflavones (SIFs), a group of secondary metabolites, have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hormone-like activities. Supplementation with SIFs in the diet was reported to promote lactation performance in ruminants. The present study was performed to further decipher the effect of various concentrations of SIFs on growth and slaughter performance, serum parameters, meat quality, and ruminal microbiota in fattening goats. After a two-week acclimation, a total of 27 5-month-old Guanzhong male goats (18.29 ± 0.44 kg) were randomly assigned to control (NC), 100 mg/d SIF (SIF1), or 200 mg/d SIF (SIF2) groups. The experimental period lasted 56 days. The weight of the large intestine was greater (p < 0.05) in the SIF1 and SIF2 groups compared with the NC group. Meat quality parameters indicated that SIF1 supplementation led to lower (p < 0.05) cooking loss and shear force (0.05 < p < 0.10). The 16S rRNA sequencing analysis demonstrated that SIF1 supplementation led to lower (p < 0.05) proportions of Papillibacter and Prevotellaceae_UCG-004 but greater (p < 0.05) CAG-352 abundance in the rumen; these responses might have contributed to the improvement in production performance. In conclusion, meat quality and ruminal microbiome could be manipulated in a positive way by oral supplementation with 100 mg/d of SIFs in fattening goats. Thus, this study provides new insights and practical evidence for the introduction of SIFs as a novel additive in goat husbandry.
The Effect of Dietary Protein Quality and Feeding Level on Milk Secretion and Mammary Protein Synthesis in the Rat

Abstract:Protein synthesis was studied in mammary tissue of rats fed diets deficient in protein quality and/or restricted in food intake throughout gestation and lactation. Diets containing 25% wheat gluten (WG), wheat gluten plus lysine and threonine (WGLT), or casein (C) were pair‐fed from conception until day 15 of lactation at 100% or 85% of WG ad libitum consumption (PF100 and PF85, respectively). A seventh group was fed C ad libitum. Rates of protein synthesis were measured in vivo at day 15 of lactation from incorporation of [3‐ 3 H]phenylalanine. At both PF100 and PF85, fractional and absolute rates of mammary gland protein synthesis were two‐ to three‐fold higher in rats fed C than in those fed WG. Pup weights showed similar treatment effects. Both mammary protein synthesis rates and pup weights were significantly higher in rats fed C at PF85 than rats fed WG ad libitum. Food restriction from PF100 to PF85 depressed pup weights and mammary protein synthesis rates in rats fed WGLT, but had no effect in rats fed WG. These results demonstrate that when food intake is restricted, improvement of protein quality of the maternal diet increases milk output in the rat in association with increased rates of mammary protein synthesis.

Abstract:Introduction: it is known that diet plays a key role in body composition and affects energy balance. However, scarce information is available in the scientific literature about the influence of food and specific nutrients such us dairy products, a basic food group and an important source of nutrients in the diet. Objective: the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of fermented dairy products (goat or cow milk) on body composition and appetite regulation in adult animals. Material and methods: twenty adult male Wistar albino rats were fed fermented goat or cow milk-based diets for 30 days. The evolution of body composition and plasma concentrations of adipokines (leptine and adiponectine), intermediary metabolism regulating hormones (ghrelin, insulin, thyroid stimulating hormone, triyodotironine, thyroxine), and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) were analyzed. Results: body weight and body fat percentage were lower (p < 0.001) in rats fed fermented goat milk versus those fed fermented cow milk, whereas lean mass percentage was higher (p < 0.01). Plasma thyroid hormone and insulin concentrations did not show significant differences between diets. The fermented goat milk-based diet decreased ghrelin and adiponectin levels (p < 0.001), and increased leptine and NEFA concentrations (p < 0.001). Conclusion: fermented goat milk consumption decreases adiposity and body weight in adult rats by increasing energy expenditure, lipolysis, and satiety sensation.
Neurodevelopmental outcomes of healthy Chinese term infants fed infant formula enriched in bovine milk fat globule membrane for 12 months - A randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Background and objectives: Human milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) has multifunctional health benefits. We evaluated neurodevelopment and growth of healthy term infants fed bovine milk-derived MFGM-enriched formula (MF) over 12 months. Methods and study design: A prospective, multi-center, double-blind, randomized trial was conducted in Fuzhou, China. Healthy term infants (n=212), aged <14 days, were assigned randomly to be fed MF or a standard formula (SF) for 6 months and then switched to stage 2 MF and SF formula until 12 months. A reference group (n=206) contained healthy breastfed infants (BFR). Neurodevelopment was assessed with Bayley-III Scales. Results: At 12 months, the composite social emotional (+3.5) and general adaptive behaviour (+5.62) scores were significantly higher in MF than SF (95% CIs 0.03 to 6.79 and 1.78 to 9.38; p=0.048 and 0.004, respectively). Mean cognitive (+2.86, 95% CIs -1.10 to 6.80, p=0.08), language (+0.39, 95% CIs -2.53 to 3.30, p=0.87) and motor (+0.90, 95% CIs -2.32 to 4.13, p=0.49) scores tended to be higher in MF than SF, but the differences between the two groups were not significant. BFR scored higher on Bayley-III than either MF or SF at 6 and 12 months. Cognitive scores were significantly higher in BFR than SF (95% CI 0.05 to 7.20; p=0.045), but not MF (p=0.74) at 6 months. Short-term memory was significantly higher in MF than SF at 12 months (95% CI 1.40 to 12.33; p=0.002). At 4 months, serum gangliosides were significantly higher in MF and BFR than SF (95% CI 0.64 to 13.02; p=0.025). Milk intake, linear growth, body mass and head circumference were not significantly different between formula-fed groups. Conclusions: MFGM supplementation in early life supports adequate growth, increased serum gangliosides concentration and improves some measures of cognitive development in Chinese infants.

Abstract:Breast milk has many beneficial properties and unusual characteristics including a unique fat component, termed milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). While breast milk yields important developmental benefits, there are situations where it is unavailable resulting in a need for formula feeding. Most formulas do not contain MFGM, but derive their lipids from vegetable sources, which differ greatly in size and composition. Here we tested the effects of MFGM supplementation on intestinal development and the microbiome as well as its potential to protect against Clostridium difficile induced colitis. The pup-in-a-cup model was used to deliver either control or MFGM supplemented formula to rats from 5 to 15 days of age; with mother’s milk (MM) reared animals used as controls. While CTL formula yielded significant deficits in intestinal development as compared to MM littermates, addition of MFGM to formula restored intestinal growth, Paneth and goblet cell numbers, and tight junction protein patterns to that of MM pups. Moreover, the gut microbiota of MFGM and MM pups displayed greater similarities than CTL, and proved protective against C. difficile toxin induced inflammation. Our study thus demonstrates that addition of MFGM to formula promotes development of the intestinal epithelium and microbiome and protects against inflammation.

Abstract:Background: To assess the effects of inactivated Lactobacillus rhamnosus (ILR) on growth performance, serum biochemical indices, colonic microbiota, and metabolomics in weaned piglets, 120 piglets were randomly divided into five groups. Samples in the control group were fed a basal diet, while the experimental ILR1, ILR2, ILR3, and ILR4 groups were fed basal diets supplemented with 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4% ILR, respectively. The prefeeding period lasted for 5 days and was followed by a formal period of 28 days. Results: Compared to the control, the average daily gain increased by 4.38%, 7.98%, 19.32%, and 18.80% for ILR1, ILR2, ILR3, and ILR4, respectively, and the ratio of feed to gain decreased by 0.63%, 3.80%, 12.66%, and 10.76%, respectively. Serum IgA, IgG, IgM, total antioxidant capacity, and glutathione peroxidase levels increased significantly in weaned piglets in the treatment groups. Addition of 0.3% ILR significantly increased the Shannon and Simpson indices of the colonic microbiota in weaned piglets and altered the microbiota composition. Changes in metabolic profiles were observed and were primarily related to the urea cycle, amino acid metabolism, and lipid metabolism. Conclusion: ILR improved growth performance and serum immunological and biochemical indices and optimized the colonic microbiota structure and metabolism of weaned piglets.

Abstract:Grape seed extract (GSE) has a variety of biological functions. At present, there has been limited information on the utilization of GSE as a feed additive in weaned lambs. The aim of this experiment was to study the potential influence of dietary supplementation with GSE on the growth performance, rumen fermentation characteristics, apparent digestibility, blood parameters and immunity in weaned lambs. In total, 30 male Hu sheep lambs with similar body weight (15.43 ± 0.49 kg) and age (48 ± 2 days) were randomly divided into two treatments: control (CON, fed basal ration) and GSE [fed basal ration and 0.6 g/d GSE (main compositions: proanthocyanidin 50%, catechin 24%, gallic acid 16% and epicatechin 6%) per lamb]. The feeding experiment lasted for 60 d. Results showed that GSE supplementation significantly increased (p = 0.008) the average daily gain of lambs. Compared with CON group, the ruminal propionate and butyrate concentrations were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in GSE group, whereas the ammonia nitrogen was decreased (p = 0.007). Also, the crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and ether extract digestibility of GSE group were higher (p < 0.05) than those of CON group. The serum contents of glucose, triglyceride, immunoglobulin G, glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in GSE group when compared to those in CON group. However, an opposite trend of urea nitrogen, non-esterified fatty acid, interleukin-1β, itumor necrosis factor-α and malondialdehyde was observed between the two groups. Additionally, supplementation of GSE increased (p < 0.05) the Lactobacillus and decreased (p < 0.05) the Escherichia coli and Salmonella counts in the feces of lambs. In summary, GSE supplementation can improve growth performance, nutrient digestion and immunity of weaned lambs.
Effects of Lactococcus lactis MG1363 producing fusion proteins of bovine lactoferricin–lactoferrampin on growth, intestinal morphology and immune function in weaned piglet

Abstract:<h3> Aims</h3><p>We developed a strategy for localized delivery of the LFCA (lactoferricin‐lactoferrampin), which is actively synthesized in situ by <i>Lactococcus lactis</i> (pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363), and explored the possibility of using the pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363 as an alternative additive diet to antibiotics. </p><h3> Methods and Results</h3><p>The antimicrobial activities of the LFCA derived from pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363 was tested <i>in vitro</i>. The results showed that LFCA had an inhibitory effect on <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i>,<i> Escherichia coli,</i> and <i>Salmonella enteritidis</i>. Then the pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363 was used as an additive diet to piglets. Our data demonstrated that oral administration of pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363 significantly improve the average daily gain (ADG), feed‐to‐gain ratio, intestinal mucosal integrity and decreased the serum endotoxin and D‐lactic acid levels. The mRNA expression levels of intestinal tight junction proteins (including Occludin, Claudin‐1, and ZO‐1) were significantly up‐regulated by pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363 administration. The serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels, intestinal secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) levels, IL‐2, IL‐10 and TGF‐<i>β</i> levels were significantly increased by pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363. Furthermore, our data revealed that oral administration of pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363 significantly increased the number of general <i>Lactobacillus</i>, and decreased the total viable <i>Escherichia coli</i> counts in the ileum and cecum contents. </p><h3> Conclusions</h3><p>We developed a novel pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363 secreting LFCA, which had probiotic effects on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, intestinal barrier function, and immunological indices of weaned piglets.</p><h3> Significance and Impact of the Study</h3><p>pAMJ399‐LFCA/LLMG1363, with probiotic effects on the health of weaned piglets, may be a promising feed additive for weaned piglets.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the biological effects of supplementation of bovine lactoferricin (BLFc) at the rate of 100 mg/kg/day (LF-1) or 200 mg/kg/day (LF-2) in lactating dairy goats. Dietary BLFc supplementation increased the concentration of lactoferrin (LF) in the milk and serum (p < 0.05) without affecting the feed intake. In the LF-1 group, serum Fe, total antioxidant (T-AOC), and immunoglobulin A (IgA) were increased (p < 0.05), while malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased (p < 0.05). In the LF-2 group, ruminal fluid pH value was decreased (p < 0.05), and the composition of ruminal microflora on day 42 was more diversified. Firmicutes phylum in the LF-2 group was the most abundant phyla. In contrast, Bacteroidetes phylum in the control group and the LF-1 group were the most abundant. Lower milk somatic cell count and higher IgA were observed in the LF-1 group and the LF-2 group than those in the control group (p < 0.05). These results suggested beneficial effects of supplementation of 100 mg/kg/day BLFc on reducing the oxidative stress and altering diversity of ruminal microflora.
