Abstract:This study integrates perspectives from the literature on science parks, environment dynamism, and on the resources-based view of the firm, to develop an integrative model of the park location value to resident firms. Consistent with our theorizing, the externalities generated by the science park, the firm’s idiosyncratic endowment in a wide range of resources, and its heterogeneous competitive environment jointly influence the differential performance of science park firms. The results suggest that firms residing in science parks with more co-located complementary firms demonstrate better sales and sales growth performance. A firm’s certain internal and external resource endowment and the munificent environments within which a firm operates serve as enabling conditions for better sales and sales growth performance.

Abstract:The information industry is one of the most strategic industries in China,with software at its core.Developing the software industry is crucial to enhancing independent Chinese innovation,especially during the current financial crisis.This study focuses on national software parks,(the representatives of the Chinese software industry),and analyzes the effects of indusindustrial environments acting as moderators.After screening all the national software parks,16 parks were selected as the most representative sample.The results show that the centralization of entrepreneurial networks,(i.e.large-firm-centered networks),significantly improve economic performance.The development of cliques in entrepreneurial networks,(i.e.software alliance networks),however,is not significant for economic performance.This means that the two network characteristics have different roles in improving the park's performance.Furthermore,both entrepreneurial network characteristics have a positive impact on innovation performance.The effects of environments,quality of life,local GDP,industrial policy and supply of technology on economic and innovation performance are caused by different factors.Economic performance was significantly affected by quality of life,while innovation performance by the supply of technology,which means that the administrative agencies where software parks are located should emphasize improving the comfort of software workers,(housing quality,hygienic conditions,traffic,education,security and culture etc.,)and advance the quality and quantity of the supply of technology,(software colleges as well as educated software students).The study also found that the economic and technological environments are positive moderators to the relationship between the cliques-characteristics and innovative performance,meaning better economic performance and technology supplies can be helpful to strengthen the software alliances in software parks to improve innovation.Finally,this paper systematically generalizes the main findings of this study,explores their theoretical and practical significance,and points out limitations and areas for further research.

Abstract:This paper examines the policy effect of development zones on firms' performance, excluding the agglomeration effect. We constructed an industrial cluster dataset on China's manufacturing industries to identify the impacts on firms' productivity and other performance indices after the establishment of development zones in 2006. Based on the estimated results obtained from a difference-in-differences analysis, development zones are conducive to promoting firms' performance, and the policy effect is heterogeneous across industrial clusters, regions and firms. The findings drawn from this study can be beneficial to policymakers in their pursuit of promoting regional development through favourable industrial policies.
International expansion and firm performance in emerging market: evidence from China

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between international expansion and firm performance in an emerging market. Design/methodology/approach - The paper firstly explores the relationship between internationalization and firm performance, then investigates the roles of diversification, and examines how diversification moderates the relationship between internationalization and firm performance. For this purpose, panel data on 318 Chinese listed manufacturing firms during the period 1999-2008 were utilized. Three groups of samples of high, medium and low levels of diversified manufacturing firms were obtained. Statistical techniques of fixed-effects panel data model yielded an interesting pattern of findings. On the basis of these results, the paper then discusses the implications for the international expansion of Chinese firms. Findings - At high and low levels of internationalization, internationalization is negatively associated with firm performance, but at medium levels of internationalization, greater internationalization is accompanied by higher performance. Product diversification negatively moderates the relationship between internationalization and performance. As product diversification increases, the relationship between internationalization and performance changes from a horizontal S-curve in firms with low levels of diversification to a U-curve in moderately diversified firms and eventually to an equilibrium level in highly diversified firms. The initial stage of the horizontal S-curve of internationalization and performance declines markedly in Chinese manufacturing firms as a whole, therefore it is by no means easy for Chinese firms to undertake internationalization. Research limitations/implications - These findings do suggest that managers need to take a long-term view of internationalization and make a commitment to internationalization. Originality/value - This is the first paper of its kind to empirically validate the relationship between internationalization, firm performance and diversification in China. It is intended to make a contribution to theoretical research on international business in an emerging market.

Abstract:Mariculture Sci-Tech parks promote modern mariculture and help improve China's mariculture industry. A park consists of a core area and a radiation area. The core area includes a farm, a cooperative, or a company, and the radiation area consists of many small farmers. Stochastic frontier analysis is employed to analyze the performance and its influencing factors of different governance structures in mariculture Sci-Tech parks. Results indicated the following: 1) Core areas show diminishing returns of scale, indicating that the increase in the scale of mariculture production can decrease the output. 2) The average technical efficiency of the core area is 0.4728, with the large family farms having the highest (0.4907), followed by the mariculture companies (0.4777) and the fish farmer cooperatives (0.4499). Several reasons can explain the difference in technical efficiency. First, family farms can better apply the new technology and new varieties to the mariculture production through moderate scale management. Second, companies have a higher operating cost, and the construction of mariculture Sci-Tech park has little effect on companies' performance. Third, cooperatives' advantage is not obvious in the organization management and the repeated construction of the infrastructure decreases utilization. 3) When the radiation area is considered, the input of large family farms has the most significant impact on the performance of the entire Sci-Tech park, with the highest driving efficiency. However, the cooperatives' driving efficiency is very poor, and the company performance is only reflected in the capital investment.

Abstract:Extant literatures have explored the content and dimensions of intrapreneurial competency, but few of them have examined its application under Chinese background. By using a sample of 220 employees from 95 Chinese science and technology SMEs, this paper filled this void. Exploratory factor analysis indicates that the construct consists of seven dimensions: new business venturing, innovativeness, self-renewal, proactiveness, organization learning, network harmony, social intercourse. However, subsequent correlation and regression analysis demonstrates only new business venturing, innovativeness, self-renewal, proactiveness are related to performance. The implications and future research directions were discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract:The authors have designed the research scale through reading the literature, interviewing companies and reading the working reports on Chinese Science Parks. According to the data mining that has been proceeded after the questionnaire inquiry, they have determined 4 aspects of the factor of the innovation environment provided by the Science Parks: the factor of the Science Park's office services and cultural climate, the factor of financial services support, the factor of the technology services support and the factor of the market services support. The evaluation of the operating performance of Science Park firms has some characteristics that can be summed up into six dimensions: Science Park firms' performance of product innovation, performance of R & D, performance of the company development, performance of the technology leading-edge, performance of the funding for R & D and performance of the access to policy. The paper concludes by examining the causal relationships between the factors of Science Parks' innovation environment and performance of Science Parks firms, and giving policy recommendations.

Abstract:Science parks are considered to be key drivers of innovative economic activities and are important tools for countries and regions to achieve sustainable development. However, there still exists controversy about the positive effect of the science parks on the companies' innovative performance. In this study, we constructed six hypotheses according to previous studies and tested them in the Shanghai Zhangjiang National Innovation Independent Demonstration Zone to answer two major research questions, i.e., (1) "Do science parks promote companies' innovative performance?" and (2) "What factors in science parks affect the likelihood and intensity of companies' innovative performance?". Specifically, we selected 911 companies within the park and 861 companies outside the park using the coarsened exact matching method and applied the zero-inflated negative binomial model to identify the relationship between the company's presence within the science park and the company's innovative performance. Then, we applied the Heckman two-step model to further explore the key impact factors affecting the intensity of the innovation activities of the companies in the park. The results confirmed our first hypothesis that science parks can promote companies' innovative performance. Moreover, we obtained two other findings. First, if a company is located within a science park, it can greatly improve the probability of innovation of that company, but it does not have any significant impact on the intensity. In other words, science parks promote more innovation among companies lacking innovation experience than those with innovation experience. Secondly, the reason why science parks can promote innovation is the knowledge spillover of innovation supporting institutions and high-tech enterprises in the parks, which is limited to a small geographical range. Our study provided new evidence on the positive role of science parks on companies' innovative performance and offered a valuable sample for the research of science parks in developing countries. In addition, the policy suggestions we raised have reference value for developing countries to take full advantage of science parks to achieve sustainable development of their innovative economy.

Abstract:Building on an asset complementarity perspective, human capital and social capital measures are used to examine the science park location decisions of returnee entrepreneurs and the performance of their ventures. The study uses a unique, hand–collected data set of 349 SMEs from Zhongguancun Science Park in China, including 53 SMEs from locations administered by universities. The article considers the antecedents of university and nonuniversity science park location and firm growth with a view to drawing conclusions that go beyond the specific context of Beijing and China. Its findings include the tendency for returning entrepreneurs with academic knowledge in the form of patents transferred from abroad to locate in nonuniversity science parks, and for those with previous firm ownership abroad to choose university science parks. The firms of returnees with patents from abroad enjoyed stronger employment growth in nonuniversity science parks and those with commercial experience abroad with MNCs performed better in university science parks. This evidence is consistent with the view that returning entrepreneurs seek complementary (academic and commercial) assets in their location decisions, although some inconsistencies with this view are also discussed.

Abstract:This paper briefly analyzes the characteristics and evolution of the Science and Technology Parks in developed countries and in China, irrespectively. Compared with the former, China's state-level Science and Technology Parks have more complex context and more problems in development process. China's high-tech industry has grown quantitatively in various aspects. However, the industry as a whole is still at the low-end of the global value chain. With an innovation cluster perspective, the paper proposes the ideal development path of the Science and Technology Parks of China. The implication of innovation cluster, the importance of institution for collaboration and the influence of global driven force are explained. © 2010 Peking University.

Abstract:This paper investigates the influence of the variables including government policy,local institutional management,and firm evaluation,firm demand on firm performance in Science Park.A sample of 218 employees across 105 Hi-tech firms in Beijing completed the questionnaire.The scales contained within the measure had acceptable levels of reliability and were factorially distinct.The result of data analysis shows that the firm has higher growth and innovation performance when its technical demand is satisfied;the managerial policy of government is positive to firm's technical performance but negative to its financial one;specially,the service of managerial institution in Science Park also shows the positive relation with firm's technical and marketing performance.

Abstract:Recent theoretical attempts to understand the dynamics of technological innovation have been based predominantly on the theory of localized knowledge spillover which sees technological innovation as the result of inter-firm interactions in the process of industrial clustering. This study introduces a new analytical framework that goes beyond inter-firm knowledge exchange and highlights the significance of the strategies and selectivity of both the state and firms to understand the dynamics of technological innovation in a transitional economy such as China. A comparative study on the strategies and selectivity of central government, local government, and individual firms in both Shanghai and Shenzhen, the two key city-regions in China, has found that difference in the degree of state-firm strategic coordination- or the dynamic process in which firms' innovation-related strategies are coordinated with the ”strategic selectivity” of the central and/or local governments- is a significant factor explaining the regional variation in technological innovation. The Chinese experience demonstrates that the uneven growth of technological innovation has been contingent upon how the state builds a favorable institutional structure and market environment to stimulate, encourage, and support firms' innovative activities and how firms actively respond to the institutional environment created by the state.

Abstract:With the requirement of endogenous innovation,the impact of the policy-making on the firm’s innovation activities in the clusters is investigated,and then the innovation performance among different sized firms in different clusters is comparatively analyzed.Several clusters in different regions of China are investigated,and the result shows that small firms have higher innovation level than that for those larger firms in the cluster;The firms in Software Industry Park have higher innovation level than that for the firms in other clusters;the direct policy support from local government could not improve the innovation performance of the firms in the cluster,however its indirect regulations,such as keeping a good competitive environment,improving the attractiveness of the cluster region,enhancing its information service,would make the firms easier to improve the technical and innovative competence in the cluster.At the last,the policy implication and suggestion,as well as the research limitation and future direction of the research are given.

Abstract:Through the interview with managers in firms and based on extant theories, we develop a scale for Chinese corporations and tested it in eight Chinese science parks. Using the exploratory factor analysis, we extract three factors of motivation, which are motivation of technology gain, motivation of penetrating market and motivation of policy gain. Finally, we use canonical correlation analysis to test the influence of eight variables on three motivation factors including attraction of resources, attraction of area difference, attraction of policy, support policy of local government, management policy of local government, the service of merchants' institution, the management of software/hardware in science park and circumference environment of science parks.

Abstract:Given China's rapidly developing landscape, improving innovation performance has become a critical objective for high-tech service firms. This study examined the relationship between business models and the performance of Chinese high-tech service firms. The theoretical model is based on contingency theory and incorporates concepts from business model innovation, and technological innovation. A multilevel regression analysis was conducted using data from 489 high-tech service firms in China. The results indicate significant positive correlations between innovation performance and various factors such as efficiency- and novelty-oriented business models, technology development, and technology acquisition. Second, technological innovation mode mediates the relationship between the business model and innovation performance. Third, technological regimes have different moderating effects on the relationships between the type of business model and innovation performance and that between the type of technological innovation and innovation performance. From a practical perspective, firms operating under different technological regimes should adjust their business strategies to achieve optimal innovation performance. Furthermore, the results have several theoretical contributions and practical implications. The findings offer a valuable reference for business growth in developing regions and identifies viable ways to improve the innovation performance of China's high-tech service enterprises.

Abstract:This paper adopts a contingency perspective to investigate the relationship among cluster density, external search, and innovation performance of high-technology ventures. Specifically, this study argues that local density and external search have both separate and joint effects on a firm's innovation performance. To test our hypotheses, we draw a three-year sample from the Zhongguancun Science Park. The empirical findings provide strong support for the above arguments. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Science and technology parks (STPs) are established to promote the firm innovation performance via agglomeration economy and government support in China. On‐site qualified firms obtain government R&D funding as a type of government support, and they are offered differential innovation service caused by the differential capabilities of sub‐parks which scatter throughout a single city. It is debatable whether those government supports at firm and sub‐park levels can promote firm innovation capabilities. This study takes Zhangjiang National Innovation Demonstration Zone, Shanghai as an example. It applies a Tobit regression model to analyse the databases of Zhangjiang Annual Sampling Survey of Firms 2015 and Zhangjiang Development Report 2015. We find out at the firm level, government R&D funding has a significant and positive influence on firms' innovation, but government R&D funding generates a crowing‐out effect the innovation performance of on‐site firms with more R&D investment themselves. At the sub‐park level, innovation service agencies of sub‐parks do not exert an important role in influencing firms' innovation, and they even have negative moderating effects on the relationship between firm R&D investment and firm innovation performance. It reflects the mismatch between innovation service of STPs and firms' needs in China.

Abstract:This research aims to understand how industrial characteristics in Chinese industrial sectors are related to and affect innovation activities. Using Heckman's two-step procedure, this study contributes to examine firms' innovation determinants with a framework that clearly distinguishes between the two steps of innovation model: innovation propensity (probability of being innovative) and innovation performance (patents and innovation sales). In particular, the moderating effects of industrial characteristics on the relationships between R&D intensity, financial incentives and innovation performance are discussed. The findings show that different industrial characteristics generate different impacts on innovation propensity and innovation performance. Firms in capital intensive industries and relative monopoly industries are more likely to innovate. The findings also show that Direct Government Subsidy does not contribute significantly to improve economical innovation performance of firms and Indirect Government Subsidy on innovative economic performance is easier to be influenced by industry characteristics, which have important potential policy implications to guide innovation activities for Chinese policy makers as well as for Chinese firms.
