Abstract:The Washimi and Karpman ponderomotive interaction due to electromagnetic waves propagation is investigated for unmagnetized plasmas described by a isotropic Kappa distribution. We performed a brief analysis of the influence of the Kappa distribution in the dispersion relations for a low temperature plasma expansion at the lowest order in which the thermal effects are appreciated. The spatial and temporal factor of the ponderomotive force is obtained as a function of the wavenumber, the spectral index $\kappa$ and the ratio between the plasma thermal velocity and the speed of light. Our results show that for unmagnetized plasmas non-thermal effects are negligible for the spatial ponderomotive force when non-relativistic thermal velocities are considered. However, for unmagnetized plasmas the temporal factor of the ponderomotive force appears only due to the presence of suprathermal particles, with a clear dependence on the $\kappa$ index. We have also analysed the role of the non-thermal effect in the induced Washimi and Karpman ponderomotive magnetization and the total power radiated associated with it. We have also shown that the slowly varying induced ponderomotive magnetic field magnitude increases as the plasma moves away from thermal equilibrium.

Abstract:It is possible to produce a ponderomotive effect in a plasma system without time-varying fields, if the plasma flows over spatially oscillations in the field. This can be achieved by superimposing a spatially oscillatory perturbation on a guide field, then setting up an electric field perpendicular to the guide field to drive flow over the perturbation. However, subtle distinctions in the structure of the resulting electric field can entirely change the behavior of the resulting ponderomotive force. Previous work has shown that, in slab models, these distinctions can be explained in terms of the polarization of the effective wave that appears in the co-moving frame. Here we consider what happens to this picture in a cylindrical system, where the transformation to the co-moving (rotating) frame is not inertial. It turns out that the non-inertial nature of this frame transformation can lead to counterintuitive behavior, partly due to the appearance of parallel (magnetic-field-aligned) electric fields in the rotating frame even in cases where none existed in the laboratory frame. Apart from the academic interest of this study, the practical impact lies in being better able to anticipate the antenna configuration on the plasma periphery of a cylindrical plasma that will lead to optimal ponderomotive barrier formation in the interior plasma.

Abstract:The ponderomotive force is involved in a variety of space plasmas phenomena which are characterized by the family of Kappa distributions. Therefore, evaluating these nonthermal effects in the ponderomotive force is required. The Washimi and Karpman ponderomotive interaction due to cyclotron waves is evaluated for different space conditions considering low-temperature magnetized plasmas described by an isotropic Kappa distribution and with a wave propagation parallel to the background magnetic field. We performed a brief analysis of the influence of the Kappa distribution in the dispersion relation for a low-temperature plasma expansion at the lowest order in which the thermal effects are appreciated without considering the damping characteristics of the wave. The different factors of the ponderomotive force are obtained and analyzed separately as a function of the wavenumber, the spectral index $\kappa$, and the plasma beta. We have found a relevant influence of the non-thermal effects in all the factors of the ponderomotive force for magnetized plasmas. The effect of the kappa distribution has been evaluated for a wide variety of space environments as the solar wind and the different regions of our magnetosphere where it has been found that these results can be relevant for the solar wind, the magnetosheath, the plasmasheet, and the polar cusps. We have also analyzed the role of the non-thermal effect in the induced Washimi and Karpman ponderomotive magnetization in the context of spatial plasmas and the total power radiated associated with it. We find that even for nearly cold magnetized plasmas and waves far from the resonances the effect of the kappa parameter in the ponderomotive force cannot be neglected. This suggests a significant role of the Kappa distribution in ponderomotive phenomena of space physics.

Abstract:The non-stationary Karpman–Washimi ponderomotive force and self-generated magnetic field in an unmagnetized system are investigated in the context of nonextensive distribution based on the kinetic theory. The ponderomotive force, magnetization, and radiation power are obtained as functions of the nonextensive parameter q, wave frequency, and wave number. It is shown that the presence of high-velocity electrons leads to an increase in temporal and spatial variation parts of ponderomotive force, magnetization, and radiation power. Furthermore, the results indicate that the self-generated magnetic field driven by the Karpman–Washimi ponderomotive force primarily manifests as small-scale and low-frequency magnetic field.

Abstract:The collisionless nonresonant force by low frequency waves has been thought to be capable of driving the nonresonant current. However, for a single particle, the ponderomotive force is in the direction of the gradient of the wave field energy. For cold plasmas, the Reynolds stress acting on the Lagrangian fluid element fully counteracts the nonresonant force offered by the quasilinear electromagnetic force. For hot plasmas, the collisionless nonresonant force is also cancelled by the nonlinear kinetic stress force. Therefore, in collisionless plasmas, none of the ponderomotive forces by low frequency waves can drive the nonresonant current. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The well-known ponderomotive force, arising from the interaction of matter and light, has critical implications across a broad range of fields from laser fusion and astrophysics to laser diagnostics and even pulsed-power experiments. This pseudo-potential pushes electrons, which through coulomb forces causes ion density modulations that can steepen with profound implications. When used intentionally, density modulations can be used for plasma gratings, which are essential for optical components operating in extreme conditions for next generation lasers. They can also be important for plasma confinement and particle trapping, which can even impact magnetic confinement in fusion devices. The ponderomotive potential also leads to laser self-focusing, complicating laser diagnostics. In laser fusion, the force exacerbates challenges posed by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and crossed beam energy transfer (CBET), both of which destabilize the fusion process. It even plays an astrophysical role in the filamentation of fast radio bursts in the relativistic winds of magnetars. Since the ponderomotive force primarily effects electron dynamics, multi-fluid/particle codes or additional ansatz are required to include its effects. This paper demonstrates that by including electron effects on an ion timescale with a 1-fluid, 2-energy extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) model, ponderomotive effects are also naturally present. We introduce the theory for these dynamics and demonstrate their presence with 1-D pencil-like simulations.

Ponderomotive manipulation of cold subwavelength plasmas

Abstract:Ponderomotive forces (PFs) induced in cold subwavelength plasmas by an externally applied electromagnetic wave are studied analytically. To this end, the plasma is modeled as a sphere with a radially varying permittivity, and the internal electric fields are calculated by solving the macroscopic Maxwell equations using an expansion in Debye potentials. It is found that the PF is directed opposite to the plasma density gradient, similarly to large-scale plasmas. In case of a uniform density profile, a residual spherically symmetric compressive PF is found, suggesting possibilities for contactless ponderomotive manipulation of homogeneous subwavelength objects. The presence of a surface PF on discontinuous plasma boundaries is derived. This force is essential for a microscopic description of the radiation-plasma interaction consistent with momentum conservation. It is shown that the PF integrated over the plasma volume is equivalent to the radiation pressure exerted on the plasma by the incident wave. The concept of radiative acceleration of subwavelength plasmas, proposed earlier, is applied to ultracold plasmas. It is estimated that these plasmas may be accelerated to keV ion energies, resulting in a neutralized beam with a brightness comparable to that of current high-performance ion sources.

The Critical Role of Isopotential Surfaces for Magnetostatic Ponderomotive Forces

Abstract:By producing localized wave regions at the ends of an open-field-line magnetic confinement system, ponderomotive walls can be used to differentially confine different species in the plasma. Furthermore, if the plasma is rotating, this wall can be magnetostatic in the lab frame, resulting in simpler engineering and better power flow. However, recent work on such magnetostatic walls have shown qualitatively different potentials than those found in the earlier, non-rotating theory. Here, using a simple slab model of a ponderomotive wall, we resolve this discrepancy. We show that the form of the ponderomotive potential in the co-moving plasma frame depends on the assumption made about the electrostatic potential in the lab frame. If the lab-frame potential is unperturbed by the magnetic oscillation, one finds a parallel-polarized wave in the co-moving frame, while if each field line remains equipotential throughout the perturbation region, one finds a perpendicularly-polarized wave. This in turn dramatically changes the averaged ponderomotive force experienced by a charged particle along the field line: not only its scaling, but also its direction.

Abstract:The problem of ponderomotive separation of ions with different charge-to-mass ratios under the influence of Alfven waves, which permanently exist in the magnetosphere in the form of geomagnetic pulsations, is posed. Formulas are derived for partial ponderomotive forces acting on light and heavy (metal) ions. In the quasi-hydrodynamic approximation, it was found that the Clarke number, which characterizes the metallicity of the plasma, is maximum at the minimum of the magnetic field on the field line along which the Alfvén wave propagates. Abstract:Wave induced attraction of matter is a unique aspect of ponderomotive forcing by electromagnetic (e/m) waves in plasmas. The Miller force, sometimes denoted the gradient force, is of particular interest, because the direction as well as magnitude of the Miller force on a plasma depends on the wave frequency. While plasma is usually considered in its gaseous form, solid bodies can also be treated as plasma, denoted solid-state plasma. The first experimental proof of wave effects in magnetized solid-state plasmas (Lundqvist, 1949, Herlofson, 1950) came after the suggestion by Alfv\'en (1942) on the possible existence of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) waves. However, most of our knowledge basis on MHD/Alfv\'en waves have since then emerged from space- and laboratory (gaseous) plasmas. It is therefore timely to investigate further the applicability of e/m wave ponderomotive forcing on solid-state plasma. In this report we discuss the applicability of the ponderomotive Miller force on solid-state plasmas. At this stage the treatise will be rather qualitative, based on theories developed for space plasma. We assume that e/m wave energy and momentum is transferred in a thin surface layer constituting solid-state plasma. A Miller force results from the wave pressure gradient set up in the surface layer. Since the solid body constitute a coupled system (lattice), the Miller force will act on all atoms in the body, the total force limited by the wave input power. A quantitative comparison with experimental results obtained from a Cavendish vacuum experiment (Lidgren and Lundin, 2010) gives a surprisingly good agreement between theory and experiments. As further proof for e/m wave attraction of matter, we show a simulation, taking into account the measured pendulum offsets.

Abstract:In the presence of an inhomogeneous oscillatory electric field, charged particles experience a net force, averaged over the oscillatory timescale, known as the ponderomotive force. We derive a one-dimensional Hamiltonian model which self-consistently couples the electromagnetic field to a plasma which experiences the ponderomotive force. We derive a family of structure preserving discretizations of the model of varying order in space and time using conforming and broken finite element exterior calculus spectral element methods. In all variants of our discretization framework, the method is found to conserve the Casimir invariants of the continuous model to machine precision and the energy to the order of the splitting method used.

Abstract:Slow-time-scale magnetic fields driven by fast-time-scale electromagnetic waves or plasma waves are examined from the perspective of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations for a relativistic Vlasov plasma. An equation for slow-time-scale magnetic field is obtained. The field proposed in the present paper is a result of wave–wave beating which drives a solenoidal current. The magnitude of the slow-time-scale magnetic field proposed here can be as high as 20 MG at the critical surface for a laser intensity I=1018 W/cm2 at wavelength λ0=1.05 μm. The predicted magnetic field is observed in two-dimensional particle simulations presented here.
Magnetic loop generation by collisionless gravitationally bound plasmas in axisymmetric tori

Abstract:Current-carrying string loops are adopted in astrophysics to model the dynamics of isolated flux tubes of magnetized plasma expected to arise in the gravitational field of compact objects, such as black holes. Recent studies suggest that they could provide a framework for the acceleration and collimation of jets of plasma observed in these systems. However, the problem remains of the search of physical mechanisms which can consistently explain the occurrence of such plasma toroidal structures characterized by nonvanishing charge currents and are able to self-generate magnetic loops. In this paper, the problem is addressed in the context of Vlasov-Maxwell theory for nonrelativistic collisionless plasmas subject to both gravitational and electromagnetic fields. A kinetic treatment of quasistationary axisymmetric configurations of charged particles exhibiting epicyclic motion is obtained. Explicit solutions for the species equilibrium phase-space distribution function are provided. These are shown to have generally a non-Maxwellian character and to be characterized by nonuniform fluid fields and temperature anisotropy. Calculation of the relevant fluid fields and analysis of the Ampere equation then show the existence of nonvanishing current densities. As a consequence, the occurrence of a kinetic dynamo is proved, which can explain the self-generation of both azimuthal and poloidal magnetic fields by the plasma itself. This mechanism can operate in the absence of instabilities, turbulence, or accretion phenomena and is intrinsically kinetic in character. In particular, several kinetic effects contribute to it, identified here with finite Larmor radius, diamagnetic and energy-correction effects together with temperature anisotropy, and non-Maxwellian features of the equilibrium distribution function.

Abstract:We investigate analytically and numerically a nonlinear modification of the magnetospheric plasma density under the action of the ponderomotive force induced by ULF traveling waves, using the nonlinear stationary force balance equation. This equation is applied to both the dipole and dayside magnetosphere having one and two minima of the geomagnetic field near the magnetospheric boundary. The separate and joint actions of the ponderomotive, centrifugal, and gravitational forces on the density distribution are shown.

Abstract:Nonresonant forces by applied rf waves in plasmas are analyzed. Along the background dc magnetic field, the force arises from the gradient of the ponderomotive potential. Only when the dc magnetic field is straight, however, is this parallel force completely consistent with that from the single particle picture, where the ponderomotive force depends on the gradients of rf fields only. Across the dc magnetic field, besides the ponderomotive force from the particle picture, additional Reynolds stress and polarization stress contribute to the total force. For waves with frequency much lower than the cyclotron frequency, the perpendicular forces from the particle and fluid pictures can have opposite signs. In plasmas with a symmetry angle (e.g., toroidal systems), nonresonant forces cannot drive net flow or current in the flux surface, but the radial force may influence macroscopic behavior of plasma. Moreover, nonresonant forces may drive flow or current in linear plasmas or in a localized region of toroidal plasmas.

Abstract:Based on analysis of the specific features inherent in the trajectory of a charged particle moving in an inhomogeneous electromagnetic wave, the physical processes determining the nature of ponderomotive forces are specified. In particular, the reason for switching the accelerated motion of a particle passing through an electrical field with zero amplitude in the direction perpendicular to the electrical field to deceleration with an increase in the electrical field amplitude is detailed. The effect of the inertial mass on the trajectory of a charged particle moving in an inhomogeneous electromagnetic wave is determined.

Abstract:The local nonlinear forces induced by radio frequency (rf) waves are derived in inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas, where the inhomogeneity exists in the rf fields, in the static magnetic field as well as in the equilibrium density and temperature. The local parallel force is completely resonant, but a novel component dependent on those inhomogeneities is obtained as the result of the inhomogeneous transport of parallel resonant-absorbed momentum by the nonlinear perpendicular drift flux. In the local poloidal force, the component induced by the inhomogeneity of rf power absorption is also confirmed and it can be recognized as the residual effect from the incomplete cancellation between the rate of the diamagnetic poloidal momentum gain and the Lorentz force due to the radial diffusion-like flux. The compact expression for radial force is also obtained for the first time, whose nonresonant component is expressed as the sum of the ponderomotive force on particles and the gradients of the nonresonant perpendicular pressure and of the nonresonant momentum flux due to the finite temperature effect. Numerical calculations in a 1-D slab model show that the resonant component dependent on the inhomogeneities may be significant when the ion absorption dominates the resonant wave-particle interaction. A quantitative estimation shows that the novel component in the parallel force is important to understand the experiments of the ion-cyclotron-frequency mode-conversion flow drive.

Abstract:A new end-plugging method for rotating plasmas is identified and analyzed. It uses the ponderomotive potential associated with an azimuthal magnetostatic wiggler. Studied both analytically and numerically, this process compares favorably to other end-plugging methods in open field line magnetized plasma devices.
