Abstract:Adsorption of tobacco specific N-nitrosamines (TSNA) in industrial tobacco extract solution by ZnO modified activated carbon (AC) was deeply studied in order to discern the liquid adsorption. ZnO was coated on AC by wet impregnation and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen-adsorption–desorption to evaluate its modification on the structure of sorbent. Apart from common tobacco extract solution, the industrial extract solution with a higher TSNA content and viscosity was used to assess the performance of ZnO modified AC with monitoring of LC–MS/MS technique. The influence of TSNA concentration, S/L ratio, adsorption time and recycle index was also systemically studied. To explore whether ZnO modification induces some selective adsorptive sites on AC, elution of TSNA from sorbent and the adsorption of main neutral aroma components in tobacco extract solution were performed. About 80% of TSNA could be trapped in the solution and the ZnO/AC sorbent showed a kind of selectivity for 4-methylnitrosamino-1-3-pyridyl-1-butanone (NNK).

Abstract:Liquid adsorption of tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA) in the tobacco extracting solution by porous materials is reported, with the monitoring of standard LC–MS/MS technique, in order to reduce the environmental cancerogens in smoke at the source. Three types of adsorbent, zeolite, mesoporous silica and activated carbon are utilized to trap nitrosamines in the extracting solution of Chinese-Virginia type tobacco with low TSNA content, and their performance was measured by spectrophotometric and LC–MS/MS methods. Both measurements gave the same variation tendency on the nitrosamines analysis, enabling the photometric method to be the simple and feasible tool in preliminary tests. The influence of pore size and cations of zeolite along with the organic modification of mesoporous silica with chloroisopropyl triethoxysilane were carefully investigated, and the optimal liquid conditions were determined, in which CaA zeolite and modified mesoporous silica CAM48-10 sample can capture 34 and 46 % of TSNA in the tobacco extracting solution, offering the efficient candidate for controlling the carcinogen like nitrosamines in environment.

Abstract:HZSM-5 zeolite was used to conquer the challenge of liquid adsorption of tobacco specific N-nitrosamines (TSNA), either in aqueous solution or tobacco extract solution, offering a candidate with an optimal Si/Al ratio and channel structure to capture the carcinogens. It could trap 84% of N′-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and 99% of 4-methylnitrosamino-1-3-pyridyl-1-butanone (NNK) in aqueous solution, much better than that by NaZSM-5 zeolite. Both FTIR and TG/MS technologies were employed to study the adsorption and catalytic degradation of NNN and NNK by HZSM-5 zeolite. The N–N bond of NNK was broken in the range of 423–573K and the pyridine fragments appeared at 630K due to the breakage of C–C bond between pyridine and carbonyl groups. Besides, HZSM-5 zeolite was sprayed on the rod of cigarette and smoked with different manners for the first time, in order to assess its function of reducing TSNA content in mainstream smoke and compared with that of liquid adsorption.

Abstract:Liquid adsorption of TSNA by ZIF-8 was studied in this paper for the first time, applying the deformable molecular sieve to adsorb and separate TSNA. ZIF-8 can adsorb the bulky NNK molecules whose size exceeds its pore size, whereas NaA and KA zeolites cannot though they have similar pore sizes. Moreover, ZIF-8 selectively adsorbed NNK in solution and reached adsorption equilibrium within 5 min. In contrast, NNN was hard to be adsorbed and easy to be eluted by water, which is useful for the separation of TSNA. The influence of solid-liquid (S/L) ratio and other factors on TSNA liquid adsorption was investigated in detail. When S/L was 0.2, ZIF-8 exerted the highest efficiency and the adsorption capacity per unit surface area reached 12–15 nmol. Through the comparison of adsorption of NNK, NNN and NPYR, it is found that the adsorption of TSNA by ZIF-8 depended on π-π electron interaction mainly, rather than geometric confinement effect. The liquid adsorption curve of NNK conforms to Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, and its saturated adsorption capacity Qm was estimated to be 4.34 mg g−1, but actually it could reach 3.19 mg g−1 only. In addition, ZIF-8 had a mixing effect in liquid adsorption of TSNA: the presence of NNK promoted the adsorption of NNN slightly. ZIF-8 has the characteristics of fast adsorption and easy elution of TSNA in solution, which is beneficial for removal of TSNA to protect the environment and public health.

Abstract:The thermal regeneration of zeolite H beta adsorbed tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA) along with the impact of zeolitic pore size on the liquid adsorption of TSNA were investigated in this article for the first time. After calcination at 873 K, the regenerated H beta zeolite exhibited a kind of self-activation to trap more TSNA in succeeding adsorption in tobacco solution, achieving the high capacity of 225 mu g g(-1). With the assistance of TG-MS technique, it was clear that no secondary pollution of volatile nitrosamines (VNA) occurred in the regeneration of H beta zeolite. In order to seek cheap TSNA-capturer, three zeolites with different pore structures, H beta, MCM-22 and NTY (the dealuminated NaY) zeolites were assessed in the TSNA adsorption in laboratory formulated surface water and tobacco solution to examine the influence of pore size. MCM-22 was the excellent selective sorbent of 4-methylnitrosamino-1-3-pyridyl-1-butanone (NNK), but its channels were easily clogged in tobacco solution. Zeolite H beta showed a prominent TSNA adsorption in both solutions due to its pore size of 0.6-0.7 nm. The cheap zeolite NTY with the pore size of 0.74 nm exhibited a high adsorption capability of TSNA similar to H beta in tobacco solution, making it a promising replacement for industrial applications.

Abstract:On the basis of a study of the adsorption of zeolite and mesoporous silica, we attempted to create a hierarchical structure in the new nitrosamines trapper. Thus, mesoporous HZSM-5 zeolite was fabricated through impregnating a structure-directing agent into the as-synthesized MCM-41 followed by dry-gel conversion to transform amorphous silica to zeolite crystal. The texture of mesoporous ZSM-5 was tailored by adjusting the Si/Al ratio in the MCM-41 source and the thermal treatment time. The resulting samples were characterized by N(2) adsorption to evaluate their textural properties. One volatile nitrosamine, N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR), was used as probe molecule in instantaneous adsorption to survey the function of the resulting composites. Adsorptions of N'-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) in dichloromethane solution and tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) in tobacco-extract solution were also utilized for the same purpose. As expected, mesoporous zeolite exhibits a good adsorption capacity in laboratory tests, superior to either microporous zeolite or mesoporous silica, providing a valuable candidate for controlling nitrosamines in the environment.

Abstract:To enable zeolite to trap bulky environment pollutants such as tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), we tailored the porous structure of MCM-22 zeolite by desilication to obtain a sample with mesopores centered 3.5nm, in order to promote the mass transport. The meso-MCM-22 was further functionalized with –SO3H group to enhance the efficiency in adsorption of TSNAs. The composites were characterized by XRD and BET methods, and their adsorptive function was assessed in both liquid adsorption of N′-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and the adsorption of TSNAs in aqueous tobacco-extract solution. Grafting –SO3H group on alkaline-treated MCM-22 significantly elevated the adsorption toward nitrosamines, and the resulting composite could reduce above 70% of NNN in dichloromethane solution or 54% of TSNAs in tobacco-extract solution.

Abstract:This paper reported the attempt of endowing activated carbon the capability of selectively adsorption like that of zeolite for the first time. To create the optimal microenvironment in the activated carbon made from coconut shell, the sorbent was carefully modified with moderate ferric acetate through impregnation followed by carbonization, producing lots of ferric oxide extra-fine particles mingled with carbon nanoparticles to reduce the pore size of activated carbon and to increase the surface roughness of pore wall. Consequently, new activated carbon sorbent trapped 60% of tobacco specific nitrosamines in the tobacco extract solution with the concentration of 1796 ng mL(-1), exhibiting the highest capacity (222 mu g g(-1)) to date. Moreover, it showed a zeolitelike selectivity in the liquid adsorption to capture 98.5% of 4-methylnitrosamino-1-3-pyridyl-1-butanone because of the spindly shape of this strong carcinogen. Besides, distinguishable adsorption of tobacco specific nitrosamines from alkaloid by the new activated carbon sorbent in solution was discovered, providing a valuable clue for the development of new selective sorbents in environment protection.

Abstract:Zeolites can selectively adsorb N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR) in gaseous phase can be adsorbed on zeolite NaY,ZSM-5 and NaA.The absorption was quite strong so that all of the adsorbed carcinogens cannot desorb or decompose from the zeolite until the temperature is increased above 523 K.The application of zeolite additive in new-type of cigarette was also explored in this paper.Both taste and the physical properties of cigarette were confirmed to keep unchanged.After added zeolite in the cigarette,the amount of tobacco special N-nitrosamines (TSNA) was significantly reduced in either side-stream or main stream,which was beneficial for protecting the health of both smoker and non-smokers at the same time.

Abstract:New strategy of using ferric zeolite ZSM-5 and Y to adsorb and catalytically degrade tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) is reported in this article. These zeolites were modified by both aqueous ion-exchange with FeSO4 solution and wet-impregnation of Fe(NO3)3, and characterized by XRD, UV–vis DRS, H2-TPR and temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR). Apart from laboratory tests, these samples were put into tobacco rods of cigarette to assess their real performance of reducing TSNA content in smoke, and the determination of TSNA was carried out by LC–MS/MS technique with the assistance of internal-standards. The ion-exchanged zeolites are more active than their impregnated analogs, and the ferric Y zeolite could selectively reduce 26% of total TSNA in mainstream smoke of Burley type tobacco. Catalytic breaking of the chemical bond in NNO group of nitrosamines by zeolite is the key step of decomposition of these carcinogens.

Abstract:Adsorption of tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) by the functionalized MCM-48 mesoporous silica in tobacco-extract solution was studied using batch experiments, in order to explore the new strategy enhancing the efficiency of molecular sieve in the solution with complex composition. The techniques of XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption at 77 K, Si-29 MAS NMR, Al-27 MAS NMR and TG-DSC together with FTIR were used to inspect the mesoporous adsorbents. The hydrophobic character of adsorbent is crucial for the adsorption of TSNA in aqueous solution, and the organic 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane (CPTES) was employed to functionalize the ordered porous silica through direct co-condensation and post-synthesis grafting methods. Besides, aluminum is also incorporated into the framework of MCM-48 to enhance the adsorption capability of nitrosamines. As the result, about 70% of TSNA can be removed by the chloropropyl-modified Al-containing mesoporous silica, obviously exceeded that by activated carbon, offering the new efficient adsorbents for environment protection. Abstract:Tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA) are well-recognized carcinogens, and TSNA in smoke causes health hazard by smoking. How to adsorb TSNA in tobacco smoke with complex composition becomes the challenge facing environment protection. In this article some latest research progress in adsorption of TSNA by new molecular sieves are reviewed. The special effect of molecular sieves morphology on the adsorption of TSNA in tobacco smoke is described, and the new functional adsorbents to trap the TSNA in aqueous tobacco extract solution are introduced. Finally the development of new functional materials to eliminate the pollution of TSNA is prospected.

Abstract:Adsorption of N′-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), one of the tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA), in various zeolites with different pore size and acid-basicity were studied in this paper by in situ infrared technique for the first time. The bulky NNN can be trapped by zeolite KA through the manner inserting the N–NO group into the narrow channel resulting from the strong adsorbate–adsorbent interaction. Thermogravimetric-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) analysis was carried out to recognize the products of NNN degraded in zeolite. NNN cannot desorb from zeolite once to be trapped in the channel of adsorbent, but only degraded to less carcinogenic fragments, which is profitable for removal of this carcinogen in environment and protection of public health.

Abstract:Trapping carcinogens such as tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) in environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a challenge for the application of zeolite in environment protection because most TSNA exist in the particles whose size exceed the micropores of zeolites. In this paper, a new strategy to intercept the particles and to trap the TSNA in smoke by use of the porous calcosilicate material with fiber-like morphology plus two-dimensional eight-ring channel system is depicted and assessed. Owing to the specific fiber-like morphology and chemical composition, zeolite-like calcosilicate CAS-1 can effectively intercept the particles and thus reduces the TSNA level of mainstream smoke in the range of 30-60% once it is added into the cigarette filter, which is superior to zeolite NaA additive with the same amount. Moreover, the importance of morphology of zeolite-like porous materials on the adsorption of nitrosamines in smoke is reported for the first time.

Abstract:To expand the application of the principle of selective adsorption, new hierarchical porous carbon was fabricated from cigarette filters and cheap metal salts via one-pot synthesis, in order to selectively capture the tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) in solution. The type and amount of metal salt in the carbon precursor took charged of pore texture, electrical property and morphology, forming a new sorbent beyond activated carbon and zeolite in the selective liquid adsorption of TSNA. With the amount of FexO-doped of 10%–16.5%, new carbon sorbent captured the 29.4%–33.8% of TSNA in the tobacco extract solution though the solution contained thousands of components. Moreover, it exhibited a zeolite-like selectivity to remove 93% of 4-methylnitrosamino-1-3-pyridyl-1-butanone (NNK). The hierarchical sorbents combined the high adsorption capability of mesopore and the shape-selectivity of micropore, based on waste utilization and simply controllable process, offering a clue for preparation of new hierarchical material and resource regeneration and environmental protection.

Abstract:To meet the requirement of capturing tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) for environment protection, a unique microenvironment was carefully created inside the channels of mesoporous silica MCM-41. In situ carbonization of template micelles at 923 K, combined with the excess aluminum used in one-pot synthesis of MCM-41, is adopted to tailor the tortuosity of mecsoporous channels, while loaded metal oxides (5 wt %) and the Al component in the framework are employed to exert the necessary electrostatic interaction toward the target carcinogens TSNA in solution. The elaborated microenvironment created in mesoporous sorbents was characterized with XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, TEM, XPS, and TG-DSC methods. Various solutions of Burley- and Virginia-type tobaccos were used to assess the adsorption performance of new mesoporous sorbents, and the influence of the solid-to-liquid ratio, adsorption time, and loading amount of CuO on the adsorption was carefully examined. The representative sample 5%Cu/AM-10c could capture 27.2% of TSNA in Burley tobacco solution, and its capacity reached 0.3 mg g-1 in Snus tobacco extract solution, offering a promising candidate for the protection of the environment and public health.

Abstract:To meet the requirement of environment protection, the adsorption of volatile nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic compounds in tobacco smoke, by zeolite is investigated in this article, along with the temperature programmed surface reaction of nitrosamines on zeolite to assess the catalytic capability of the porous material on the decomposition of the carcinogens. The actual function of zeolite to reduce the level of nitrosamines in cigarette smoke is also studied. The influences of zeolite pore's structure and the surface acid-basic properties of the adsorbent on the adsorption are explored in terms of geometric matching content and adsorbent-adsorbate interaction. Moreover, the role played by the cation of zeolite in the adsorption of volatile nitrosamines is discussed and the possible attracting range of the sodium cation in basic zeolite to pull the nitrosamine molecule is tentatively calculated. Owing to the specific ability of capturing nitrosamines, zeolite is proven to be the most effective additive encased within a cigarette as the functional additive for lowering the nitrosamines content of smoke to protect the environment and public health. Other porous oxides such as amorphous silica and alumina are also utilized in these experiments, and their actual functions to trap nitrosamines as well as their potential application as the candidates for cigarette additives are discussed and prospected, too.

Abstract:N-nitrosamines content of cigarette side-stream in different brands was examined and investigated together with the content of tar and nicotine in cigarette. The results demonstrated that the content of N-nitrosamines in the side-stream of cigarette was not obviously related to the content of tar or nicotine. Therefore it is inefficient to decrease tar content in the cigarette for removal of N-nitrosamines from the smoke. A novel way for the removal of N-nitrosamines in the side-stream of cigarette is reported in this paper, and it is proven that N-nitrosamines can be selective adsorbed and/or catalytic decomposed by zeolites. By use of zeolite additive in the tobacco, about half of the N-nitrosamines was removed from the side-stream of cigarette. For the mainstream, moreover, about 80% of the N-nitrosamines could be removed. On the other hand, GC-MS results revealed the influence of adding manner of zeolite on the removal of N-nitrosamines from cigarette smoke. Much more carcinogenic compounds in tobacco smoke could be adsorbed when the zeolite was dispersed in tobacco instead of putting in filter. It is expected that the novel environment benign cigarette containing zeolite can be benefit to control the pollution caused by smoking in near future.

Abstract:The function of zeolites as the capturer of nitrosamines is depicted in this paper. N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPYR) can be selectively adsorbed by zeolite NaY or NaZSM-5 in solution or gaseous phase. The adsorption capacity of zeolite is discussed in terms of adsorbate-adsorbent interaction, involving their pore structure and electrostatic attraction along with the impact or adsorption temperature. In addition, one of the tobacco specific nitrosamines, N'-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), is also employed as a probe to explore how the bulky nitrosamines are adsorbed by zeolites. The especial function of adsorption enables zeolites to be utilized for removal of nitrosamines in environment.
