Abstract:ACT-R (adaptive control of thought-rational) is a computational cognitive architecture that consists of multiple modules for perception and attention (e.g., a visual module), response making (e.g., a motor module), and mental information processing (e.g., a goal module, declarative memory module, and procedural memory module). The output of an ACT-R model is a time course that shows the coordination of the activation of these modules in solving a cognitive task. The research reported in this paper used a driver performance model developed in ACT-R to examine the effect of driving experience on driversperformance of vehicle lateral position control. First, we compared the lane keeping performance between novice and experienced drivers in a simulated driving experiment with different road, speed, and driving conditions. Behavioral data collected from both groups of drivers were then modeled in the ACT-R driving model to analyze the cognitive mechanisms of the behaviors. The modeling results were similar to the human results. There were two main findings. (1) Novice drivers had poor lateral control skills evidenced by significantly greater lateral deviation compared with experienced drivers. The lack of control was more evident on curved roads than on straight roads. On curved roads, the novice driversdriving paths significantly shifted to the outside of the curve, whereas there was no such shift for experienced drivers. (2) The cognitive-architecture-based modeling in ACT-R revealed the mental processes including parallel processing between modules and serial processing between sub-tasks. One of the factors responsible for the difference in curved-road driving paths between the two groups of drivers may be the location of visual attention focus. Our model showed that the behavioral difference in curved-road driving paths can be modeled by assigning a visual attention focus point to the novice-driver model that is closer than that assigned to the experienced-driver model. The method and results of this study can be used to provide cognitive-psychological bases for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of driver training courses and developing intelligent driving assistance systems. This research also provides an application example and a successful experience of computational cognitive modeling using cognitive architectures such as ACT-R.

Abstract:Information technologies have been developed to facilitate driving performance and improve safety. However, there is a lack of computational methods that can take into account drivers' adaptation to driving. That is, how behaviour changes with experience. Modelling the effect of driving experience on driver behaviour is important to the development of in-vehicle information technologies, because drivers at different skill levels may need different types or levels of assistance. Cognitive-architecture-based human performance modelling is a valuable method that can integrate different cognitive aspects underlying human behaviour such as skill levels and support quantitative simulation of behaviour. The study reported in this paper tested and examined computational models built in ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational) to account for the effect of driving experience on collision avoidance braking behaviour. The modelling results were compared with human data collected from a simulated driving experiment. The models produced braking behavioural results similar to the human results. Moreover, model predictions of three other emergent-braking scenarios were generally similar to and in the same order with the empirical results reported in previous studies. Future research can further integrate the method and results into intelligent driver assistance systems such as collision warning systems to better adjust the systems to the need of different drivers with different skill levels.

Abstract:Driver vehicle control models are important in understanding driving behavior and aiding design vehicle components. In this paper, we develop a computational model of driver vehicle control based on the queuing network-model human processor cognitive architecture. A comparison of the behavioral data collected with human drivers and the driver model for path following with speed change on straight and curved roads suggests that this computational model performs the speed and steering control tasks well.

Abstract:Objective: This paper explores the development of a rigorous computational model of driver behavior in a cognitive architecture--a computational framework with underlying psychological theories that incorporate basic properties and limitations of the human system. Background: Computational modeling has emerged as a powerful tool for studying the complex task of driving, allowing researchers to simulate driver behavior and explore the parameters and constraints of this behavior. Method: An integrated driver model developed in the ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational) cognitive architecture is described that focuses on the component processes of control, monitoring, and decision making in a multilane highway environment. Results: This model accounts for the steering profiles, lateral position profiles, and gaze distributions of human drivers during lane keeping, curve negotiation, and lane changing. Conclusion: The model demonstrates how cognitive architectures facilitate understanding of driver behavior in the context of general human abilities and constraints and how the driving domain benefits cognitive architectures by pushing model development toward more complex, realistic tasks. Application: The model can also serve as a core computational engine for practical applications that predict and recognize driver behavior and distraction.

Abstract:This paper briefly introduces the effort focused on developing an integrated cognitive model of the manual RVD task in the ACT-R cognitive architecture. The descriptions about the manual RVD task and ACT-R have been shown and preliminary analysis of the control strategies has also been made. The comparison results of the performance between human operators and the cognitive model show that the control strategy can simulate behaviors of human operators in a simplified RVD task. The future work will concentrate on the implementation of control strategies in more general RVD tasks, and model validation.

Abstract:To prevent traffic accident,cognitive behavior modeling method was adopted to construct driver behavior model that not only conforms to real cases but also is useful for building driver assistant systems.Retrospective analysis of researches in traffic safety and driver behavior showed that cognitive science is the essential theory for problem-solving of traffic safety and that driver cognitive behavior modeling method is an effective tool for task studies.On the basis of comparison between different typical cognitive architecture(CA) and analysis of the theories and researches of ACT-R,driver behavior modeling(DBM) method in ACT-R was raised.As an example,a highway overtaking behavior model in ACT-R was presented.Prediction of driver behavior and verification of the model both indicated that the DBM in CA method is very suitable and flexible.The illustration of the benefits of the method showed that it can be set up effectively and is very effective in the field of traffic safety.

Abstract:This paper describes a practicing method for enhancing driver performance, which it bases on cognitive driver behavior model of ACT-R--a dominant theory of human cognitive architecture. First, the paper elaborates the idea of driver behavior modeling in cognitive architecture. And then, it dedicates the implementation of driver's practice courses based on the cognitive architecture model. Finally, by comparing the experiments back and forth of the practice, the results indicate that the practice based on driver cognitive behavior model can improve the driver performances positively. The experiences of the practice also implied that both practice method is indeed an approach worthy of pursuit for enhancing driver performance at driving emergencies and driver behavior modeling in cognitive architecture is a substantial tool for practical applications in predicting and instructing driver behaviors.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a novel driver lateral control model by integrating the driver's neuromuscular dynamics into the queuing network (QN)-based driver lateral control model. Experimental results from 16 participants in a driving simulator show that, compared to the QN-based model, the proposed model performs better, and its performance is closer to that of drivers when a vehicle runs at a relatively high speed. The proposed model not only has the advantages of the models based on a cognitive architecture but also captures the dynamic interaction between the vehicular steering system and the driver's neuromuscular system. Thus, it can better represent driver lateral control and has greater value in supporting the development of driver assistance systems.

Abstract:The driver model is an important link in the research of shared autonomy control. In order to simulate the driver's handling characteristics in the complex human-vehicle-road closed-loop system, the driver model is required to accomplish the driving operation under specific working conditions. In this paper, a lateral-longitudinal combined racing driver model is designed. The lateral control model adopts the preview model with far and near viewpoints and the dynamic velocity controller is added into the longitudinal control model to obtain the expected speed of the target trajectory. Finally, the racing driver model proposed in this paper is validated through simulation on track conditions of FSAE. In the given conditions, the result shows the racing driver model outperforms the typical driver model in lateral path tracking and the speed of racing driver model is higher than typical model on straight and corners. Meanwhile, the representation of driving skills is a key step to enhance the adaptive control of vehicles in the future. The control parameters can be adjusted according to the driver's skill information to make the vehicle control system adapt to the driver's skill level. This paper introduces the method of driving skill recognition based on wavelet transform and Lipschitz singularity detection theory and the preliminary test results prove the feasibility of using this method to characterize the driver's operating skill level.

Abstract:In order to achieve the lateral control of the intelligent vehicle, use the bi-cognitive model based on cloud model and cloud reasoning, solve the decision problem of the qualitative and quantitative of the lateral control of the intelligent vehicle. Obtaining a number of experiment data by driving a vehicle, classify the data according to the concept of data and fix the input and output variables of the cloud controller, design the control rules of the cloud controller of intelligent vehicle, and clouded and fix the parameter of cloud controller: expectation, entropy and hyper entropy. In order to verify the effectiveness of the cloud controller, joint simulation platform based on Matlab/Simulink/CarSim is established. Experimental analysis shows that: driver's lateral controller based on cloud model is able to achieve tracking of the desired angle, and achieve good control effect, it also verifies that a series of mental activities such as feeling, cognition, calculation, decision and so on are fuzzy and uncertain.

Abstract:The rapid development of intelligent vehicles has also advanced the capabilities of the Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) in mass-produced vehicles. ADAS is essential to reduce the workload of human drivers and enhance their safety. However, irrational and unexpected driving behavior, which may occur, especially in high-stress scenarios, can lead to vehicle instability and the ADAS may be unable to assist sufficiently. This is a situation, where it would be desirable to anticipate the drivers’ behavior, so that it can be integrated in the dynamic model of the vehicle. The anticipated driver action could be regarded as the system input, which is required to predict the vehicle state and improve the performance of the vehicle controller. In this study, we use a data-driven approach to predict a drivers’ longitudinal and lateral behavior, simultaneously and online. The study also compares and selects different input-dimension combinations of driver models to demonstrate its correlation with vehicle motion. Finally, the concept of “prediction confidence” is introduced, which characterizes the accuracy of the prediction results. This parameter can be viewed as a criterion to control the vehicle system adequately.

Abstract:This paper presents a supervised reinforcement learning (SRL)-based framework for longitudinal vehicle dynamics control of cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) system. A supervisor network trained by real driving data is incorporated into the actor-critic reinforcement learning approach. In the SRL training process, the actor and critic network are updated under the guidance of the supervisor and the gain scheduler. As a result, the training success rate is improved, and the driver characteristics can be learned by the actor to achieve a human-like CACC controller. The SRL-based control policy is compared with a linear controller in typical driving situations through simulation, and the control policies trained by drivers with different driving styles are compared using a real driving cycle. Furthermore, the proposed control strategy is demonstrated by a real vehicle-following experiment with different time headways. The simulation and experimental results not only validate the effectiveness and adaptability of the SRL-based CACC system, but also show that it can provide natural following performance like human driving.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new computational model of driver car-following control with lateral control based on the Queuing Network (QN) cognitive architecture. A driver car-following model within the framework of the QN cognitive architecture is first developed based on the time headway and then integrated with a QN-based driver lateral control model previously validated. The comparison between human driver data and the integrated model simulation data suggests that this computational model can perform car-following control with lateral control well, and its performance is in agreement with that of drivers under straight and curved roads. This proposed model can compute and simulate car-following behavior and thus has the potential to help develop driver assistance systems for the car-following scenario.

Abstract:Cognitive Science is widely studied as a high degree of cross-disciplinary. Various models are presented by several popular architectures. ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational) architecture is one of most popular cognitive architectures. A new combination of cognitive science and artificial intelligence is studied in this paper. Signal serials in visual modules are usually artificial defined in many cognitive models, including driver cognitive models. Vision based automatic navigation is explored for visual module of driver cognitive model. Signal serials in visual modules are provided by automatic vision based navigation systems from real driving video, and used for driver model in ACT-R architecture. Results are compared. Experimental result shows that the applying of vision navigation on cognitive model in ACT-R architecture is reliable.

Abstract:The modeling method of driver's longitudinal and lateral control behavior based on moving horizon control theory is presented, and the modeling scheme which could mimic the driver's behavior of perception, decision and execution is proposed. Based on the theory of differential flatness, the planned steering wheel angle and planned acceleration which can follow the expected path and consider the fuel economy are obtained from an optimization problem. To track the planned acceleration, a method combining feed forward and feedback controls is given, which are realized by the vehicle inverse model and PID controller, also the switching logic between the throttle pedal and brake pedal is designed. Some simulation results are given to show the feasibility and performance of the proposed modeling method.

Abstract:As automated vehicles (AVs) are moving closer to practical reality, one of the problems that needs to be resolved is how to achieve an acceptable and natural risk management behaviour for the on-board users. Cautious automated driving behaviour is normally demonstrated during the AV testing, by which the safety issue between the AV and other road users or other static risk elements can be guaranteed. However, excessive cautiousness of the AVs may lead to traffic congestion and strange behaviour that will not be accepted by drivers and other road users. Human-like automated driving, as an emerging technique, has been concentrated on mimicking a human driver's behaviour in order that the behaviour of the AVs can provide an acceptable behaviour for both the drivers (and passengers) and the other road users. The human drivers' behaviour was obtained through simulator based driving and this study developed a nonlinear model predictive control to optimise risk management behaviour of AVs by taking into account human-driven vehicles' behaviour, in both longitudinal and lateral directions.

Abstract:Astronauts are exposed to numerous stressors during spaceflights, to reduce the faulty operations and improve human performance in manually controlled rendezvous and docking (manual RVD) of space vehicles, a method, which applies sophisticated cognitive architecture Adaptive control of thought---rational (ACT-R ) to model astronaut's cognitive behaviors and investigate the cognitive components influencing human performance, is proposed in this paper . To model the cognitive behaviors in completing manual RVD task, the declarative knowledge of the cognitive processes was obtained from experiments, the procedural knowledge was acquired by analyzing the relationship between cognitive processes and behaviors, and the model parameters were set up according to the boundary conditions and task characteristics. Manual RVD cognitive behavior model is then built up based on the declarative knowledge, the procedural knowledge and the model parameters. Comparisons of model running results and manual control results were performed to test the model's validation. ACT-R control panel tool was also used to analyze the process of model's running and manual control behaviors. Results of the comparisons indicate that the ACT-R model proposed in this paper is in accordance with human cognitive behaviors.
Intelligent Vehicle's Driver Model Considering Longitudinal and Lateral Integrated Control

Abstract:A driver model has been designed in this paper. It includes a longitudinal controller and a lateral controller to control the velocity and track the desired path respectively. The longitudinal controller is designed by BP neural network algorithm, and its output is the driving torque of the wheel. The lateral controller is designed by the linear time-varying model predictive controller combined with the constraints such as side slip angle, yaw rate and lateral acceleration. Finally, the results from CarSim\Simulink show that the driver model can maintain the velocity stable and track the path successfully under different conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a computational model of driver lateral control based on the queuing network cognitive architecture and the driver preview model about driver lateral control activities. This computational model was applied to model the dual tasks of driving with a cognitive distraction task. The comparison between human driver data and model simulation data shows that this computational model can perform vehicle lateral control well, and its performance is consistent with that of drivers under single- and dual-task driving conditions. Furthermore, we examine the effectiveness of some parameters of the model in representing different styles of driving and discuss the value of this computational model in facilitating the evaluation of vehicle dynamics and driver assistant systems and providing new insights into research on unmanned vehicle control techniques.

Abstract:The paper construct the driver behavior model in cognitive architecture of the urgent circumstance based on ACT-R theory, it strive to delineate the cognitive procedure of the driver's motor under urgent situation, and find the key cognitive factors of traffic accident avoidance, and then applying the model to the driver's training and instruction, and in the end the modeling method comes truth of decreasing traffic accident. The paper retrospect the research trips of traffic safety and driver behavior firstly, it is aim to point out that the cognitive science is the essential theory for problem-solving of traffic safety and that driver behavior modeling becoming one of the hottest research spot at present is necessary. On the basis of comparison of different typical cognitive architecture and analysis of the theories and researches of ACT-R, A driver behavior modeling method based on ACT-R is raised. A driver behavior model in ACT-R under the urgent circumstance at a hard braking of the preceding vehicle's driver is presented in this paper, and the methods which based on both the prediction of driver behavior and verification of cognitive model are proofed to be widely suitable and flexible. Finally, the illustration of the benefits of drive behavior modeling in cognitive architecture make it an assertion that the application of driver behavior model in the field of traffic safety will be set up effectively and take effects greatly.
