Abstract:In rough set theory, the accuracy measure is an important numerical characterization that quantifies the imprecision of a rough set caused by its boundary region. However, it does not take into consideration the granularity of the partition induced by an equivalence relation. Therefore, the imprecision of a rough set is not well characterized by the traditional accuracy measure. This paper first analyzes the limitations of the accuracy measure, and then improves it by information theory. Finally, four theorems show that the improved measure has some good properties and hence is more suitable to measure the imprecision of rough sets.

Abstract:In Pawlak's rough set theory, a set is approximated by a pair of lower and upper approximations. To measure numerically the roughness of an approximation, Pawlak introduced a quantitative measure of roughness by using the ratio of the cardinalities of the lower and upper approximations. Although the roughness measure is effective, it has the drawback of not being strictly monotonic with respect to the standard ordering on partitions. Recently, some improvements have been made by taking into account the granularity of partitions. In this paper, we approach the roughness measure in an axiomatic way. After axiomatically defining roughness measure and partition measure, we provide a unified construction of roughness measure, called strong Pawlak roughness measure, and then explore the properties of this measure. We show that the improved roughness measures in the literature are special instances of our strong Pawlak roughness measure and introduce three more strong Pawlak roughness measures as well. The advantage of our axiomatic approach is that some properties of a roughness measure follow immediately as soon as the measure satisfies the relevant axiomatic definition.

Abstract:Variable precision rough set is an effective method to deal with uncertain information and eliminate noise data. It introduces approximate precision on the basis of Pawlak rough set, no longer pursues accuracy, reduces the fitting degree of data, and solves the interference of noise data better. It is the foundation of many complex decision problems. It is of great theoretical and practical value to construct a rough measure reflecting different decision consciousness. In this paper, by analyzing the characteristics and shortcomings of the variable precision roughness measurement method, the concept of synthetic effect function is proposed. Then, the roughness measurement model based on the effect precision is established (EPRD), and its basic properties are discussed; further the attribute reduction method based on EPRD is proposed (EPRD-RM); finally the connection and difference between EPRD-RM and the existing reduction methods are analyzed by UCI data sets.

Abstract:As a quantitative index of processing uncertain information by rough set theory, roughness measure is the basis of many decision-making problems such as resource management, system optimization etc. Therefore constructing roughness measure reflecting different decision preference has important theoretical and practical value. In this paper, we first analyze the characteristics and deficiencies of Pawlak roughness, and further propose the concepts of lower (upper) accuracy. We second establish an description ability-based roughness measure (DRD) by combining with two basic measure factors-lower (upper) accuracy. We third analyze the characteristics of DRD and further give some sufficient and necessary conditions. Finally, we propose a DRD-based reduction method (DRD-RM), and discuss the difference and relation between DRD-RM and the existing reduction methods by experimental analysis for UCI data. The experimental results show that DRD-RM is an effective technique.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose new lower and upper approximations and obtain some important properties in generalized rough set induced by a covering. Especially, these properties are compared with ones of Pawlak's rough sets and Bonikowski's covering generalized rough sets, respectively. Moreover, we define a measure of roughness based on generalized rough sets with the new approximations and discuss some significant properties of the measure.

Abstract:In this paper we address uncertainty measures of roughness of knowledge and rough sets by introducing rough entropy in incomplete information systems. We make only one assumption about unknown values: the real value of a missing attribute is one from the attribute domain.However,we do not assume which one. We prove that the rough entropy of knowledge and the rough entropy of rough sets decrease monotonously as the granularity of information smaller through finer partitionings. These conclusions are helpful people to understand the essence of rough set theory and essential to seek new efficient algorithm of knowledge reduction in incomplete information systems.

Abstract:Rough set theory, a new mathematical tool dealing with vagueness and uncertainty, was introduced by Pawlak in 1982. It has been widely used in the area of AI, data mining, pattern recognition, fault diagnositics, etc. This paper describes the basic algorithms for rough set theory, including equivalent relation, upper/lower approximation and reduction. Then several extensions of rough set theory are discussed such as VPRS, similarity based model, and applications of rough set theory in areas like data mining, rough logic, etc. Further r esearch directions are then discussed.

Abstract:Rough set theory is a new mathematical tool to deal with vagueness and uncertainty in artificial intelligence. Approximation accuracy, knowledge granularity and entropy theory are three main approaches to uncertainty research in classical Pawlak information system, which have been widely applied in many practical issues. Based on uncertainty measures in Pawlak information systems, we propose rough degree, knowledge discernibility and rough entropy in interval-valued information systems, and investigate some important properties of them. Finally, the relationships between knowledge granulation, knowledge discerniblity and rough degree have been also discussed.

Abstract:Rough set theory has been considered as a useful tool to deal with inexact, uncertain, or vague knowledge. However, in real-world, most of information systems are based on dominance relations, called ordered information systems, in stead of the classical equivalence for various factors. So, it is necessary to find a new measure to knowledge and rough set in ordered information systems. In this paper, we address uncertainty measures of roughness of knowledge and rough sets by introducing rough entropy in ordered information systems. We prove that the rough entropy of knowledge and rough set decreases monotonously as the granularity of information becomes finer, and obtain some conclusions, which is every helpful in future research works of ordered information systems.

Abstract:Roughness measure, a quantitative index for processing uncertain information using fuzzy set theory, is the basis of resource management, system optimization and many other decision-making problems. The construction of a roughness measure which reflects different decision preferences has important theoretical and practical value. In this paper, we first analyze the characteristics and shortcomings of the existing methods for measuring roughness. Following this, a new effect-based roughness measure model is established using a combination of a basic measure factor, the lower (or upper) accuracy of rough sets, entitled the effective rough degree (ERD). Next, the characteristics of ERD are analyzed in combination with different synthesis functions, and several further necessary and sufficient conditions are given. Finally, we propose an ERD-based attribute reduction method (abbreviated as ERD-RM), and then discuss the differences and relationships between ERD-RM and existing reduction methods. The theoretical analysis and practical applications show that ERD has good structural features and interpretability and can integrate decision preference into the measure system in a straightforward manner.

Abstract:Covering generalized rough set theory is an important extension of classical rough set theory. To characterize a fuzzy set in a given covering approximation space, a pair of fuzzy sets, called covering rough fuzzy lower and upper approximations, were introduced, but they do not describe well how much uncertainty is induced by the granularity of knowledge. In this paper, we first discuss the relationship between uncertainty and granularity of knowledge. Then we examine several commonly used distance measures, and indicate that some of them exhibit some limitations. Next we propose a roughness measure based on Minkowski distance, and examine some important properties of this measure. Finally, an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the application of the roughness measure to incomplete information systems with fuzzy decision.

Abstract:There are mainly two methodologies dealing with uncertainty measurement issue in rough set theory: pure rough set approach and information theory approach. Pure rough set approach is based on the concepts of accuracy, roughness and approximation accuracy proposed by Pawlak. Information theory approach is based on Shannon’s entropy or its variants. Several authors have extended the information theory approach into incomplete information systems. However, there are few studies on extending the pure rough set approach to incomplete information systems. This paper focuses on constructing uncertainty measures in incomplete information systems by pure rough set approach. Three types of definitions of lower and upper approximations and corresponding uncertainty measurement concepts including accuracy, roughness and approximation accuracy are investigated. Theoretical analysis indicates that two of the three types can be used to evaluate the uncertainty in incomplete information systems. Experiments on incomplete real-life data sets have been conducted to test the two selected types (the first type and the third type) of uncertainty measures. Results show that the two types of uncertainty measures are effective.

Abstract:The topical rough set theory is a forceful tool to handle the complete information system, and its effect to process incomplete information system is poor, particularly, its function to combine the incomplete information system with fuzzy decision information system is poorer. On the base of improving on the tolerance relation made by M. Kryszkiewez, this paper proposes the improved-tolerance relation and improved-tolerance classes; we simultaneously present the definition of the incomplete and fuzzy decision information system based on the improved-tolerance relation, and give its rough set model, i.e. the rough set model in incomplete and fuzzy decision information system. Finally, the conception of precision reduction is defined, and its algorithm is also supplied.

Abstract:Roughness measurement, an important part of rough set theory, must be faced in building data-based decision-making method. Based on the deficiencies of the variable precision roughness measurement method, this paper introduces the concept of core data sets and establishes the decision roughness measurement based on data effect (DE-DRD); then, the properties of DE-DRD are discussed; Finally, as an application of DE-DRD, the attribute reduction method based on DE-DRD (DE-DRD-RM) is proposed, and combined with UCI data sets, the characteristics of DE-DRD-RM are analyzed. The theoretical analysis and practical application show that DE-DRD can integrate decision preference into measurement system, and has extensive application value in many fields.

Abstract:Variable precision (fuzzy) rough sets are interesting generalizations of Pawlak rough sets and can handle uncertain and imprecise information well due to their error tolerance capability. The comparable property (CP for short), i.e., the lower approximation is included in the upper approximation, is fundamental in Pawlak rough sets since many theories and applications rely on this property. However, the CP is lost in many existing variable precision (fuzzy) rough sets. Therefore, a novel variable precision fuzzy rough set model with CP is proposed and an associated three-way decision model is developed. Firstly, a pair of variable precision fuzzy upper and lower approximation operators are defined and studied through fuzzy implication and co-implication operators. We show that this pair of approximation operators satisfy various properties (including CP) that the existing variable precision fuzzy approximation operators do not possess. Secondly, new methods for constructing loss functions and conditional probabilities are given by using CP, and then a new three-way decision model with three strategies (optimistic, pessimistic, and compromise strategies) is established. Finally, an explanatory example is provided to examine validity, stability and sensitivity of the proposed three-way decision model.

Fuzzy Roughness Measurement Model Based on Membership Effect

Abstract:Rough fuzzy set theory and fuzzy set theory are two commonly used tools in today's uncertain type of information processing. How to construct a fusion method for two kinds of uncertain information systematically has been a focus in both academic and applied fields. By analyzing the characteristics and shortcomings of the current fuzzy roughness sets, this paper puts forward concept of membership effect function and establishes a fuzzy roughness measurement model based on membership effect (denoted by FRM-BME, for short). And then, several necessary and sufficient conditions are given to reflect the value of FRM-BME. Finally, we propose an attribute reduction algorithm based on FRM-BME, and further analyze the characteristics and effectiveness of FRM-BME combined with specific cases. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that, FRM-BME not only has good structural characteristics and interpretability, but also can simply integrate the fuzzy processing preference into roughness measurement system. To a certain extent, it not only enriches the existing related theories, but also can be widely used in artificial intelligence, resource management and many other fields.

Abstract:Incomplete space and fuzzy decision information system exist in many applications, and their models and methods for knowledge reduction are not equivalent to incomplete Pawlak space information system or fuzzy decision information system in complete space. This paper proposes the concept of incomplete and fuzzy decision information systems based on incomplete approximation space and fuzzy decision information system, and gives the rough set model of incomplete and fuzzy decision information systems by the tolerance relation. The model generalizes rough set model of complete fuzzy decision information systems and traditional decision information systems. In this paper the concept of precision reduction and the simple algorithm are presented.

Abstract:Dominance-based rough set model has proven to be a powerful mathematical tool for preference-ordered information system. We define some measures of roughness of approximation and conclude that the definition of lower and upper approximations is not robust to noise sample in the former approaches, and then an extended model is presented based on majority inclusion. Some measures are introduced to calculate the accuracy and quality of approximation using variable precision dominance rough set methodology. The quality of approximation of partition is used as a measure of the significance of attributes. Based on the measure, the definitions of dependency of attribute set, redundancy of attribute, reduction and core are given. A greedy algorithm is constructed for preference-ordered data reduction.

Abstract:Fuzzy rough set is a generalization of crisp rough set, which deals with both fuzziness and vagueness in data. The measures of fuzzy rough sets aim to dig its numeral characters in order to analyze data effectively. In this paper we first develop a method to compute the cardinality of fuzzy set on a probabilistic space, and then propose a real number valued function for each approximation operator of the general fuzzy rough sets on a probabilistic space to measure its approximate accuracy. The functions of lower and upper approximation operators are natural generalizations of the belief function and plausibility function in Dempster–Shafer theory of evidence, respectively. By using these functions, accuracy measure, roughness degree, dependency function, entropy and conditional entropy of general fuzzy rough set are proposed, and the relative reduction of fuzzy decision system is also developed by using the dependency function and characterized by the conditional entropy. At last, these measure functions for approximation operators are characterized by axiomatic approaches.
