Abstract:Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) parts with high crystallinity were prepared by oscillation shear injection molding (OSIM), which imposed an oscillation shear stress on the polymer melt during the packing stage of injection molding. The crystalline morphology and its distribution in the parts were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements. The results showed that the OSIM PET samples, having a layered structure, possessed higher crystallinity and greater molecular orientation than conventional injection molded PET samples. In the region near the skin, the degree of crystallinity is low but molecular orientation is high due to the rapid cooling rate; in the intermediate regions, oriented crystallites with high crystallinity form; however, in the core region, the crystallites are almost isotropic due to the relaxation of chains. After annealing of the sheared sample, thin crystallites formed from cold crystallization in the amorphous regions. Based on the resulting morphology, the tensile strength was enhanced significantly in the OSIM sample. The cold crystallization process during annealing was suppressed by the confinement effect of shear-induced crystallites resulting in thin crystallites. As a result, the annealed OSIM sample can maintain the moderate ductility but has enhanced tensile strength.
