Abstract:Sir, Ragavendra et al. present a technical note focused on the durability of bar coding in complete dentures when subjected to various chemical assaults. The authors designed a protocol where 15 dentures embedded with quick response (QR) codes were exposed to three different acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric), concluding that the codes were able to be read up to 33 h after acid treatment. We agree in that this method provides a simple and cheap alternative for denture marking. Also agree in that the behavior of denture marking systems to chemical assaults has not been explored much. However, we believe that the methodology used in this technical note needs to answer some questions that we cannot respond with by only reading the article. The QR codes were printed and laminated, and placed on a depression made on the denture surface where they were covered with self-cure acrylic. Is evident that the laminated codes were not exposed to the acids, and it would be a real contribution in knowing the effect of the acids on the laminated papers already that the behavior of the acrylic to chemical exposure is well known for a long time. The resistance of the bar codes to the acids concluded by the authors cannot be demonstrated with this methodology. In 2005, Mazza et al. (1) published an excellent contribution entitled “Observations on dental structures when placed in contact with acids: experimental studies to aid identification processes”. It is interesting to note that the same three acids, applied on natural teeth (they are the most durable organs) exhibited extremely curious (and so far dissimilar from Ragavendra et al.) results: Teeth were completely dissolved after 12 h of immersion in 65% nitric acid, 14 h in 37% solution of hydrochloric acid, and 90 h in 96% sulfuric acid. Similar findings were published in 2011 by Hartnett et al. (2) who reported complete dissolutions of teeth in 19 h immersed in 31.45% hydrochloric acid, and 10 days immersed in 95–98% sulfuric acid. Those authors concluded that the hydrochloric acid was the most destructive acid also considering that it is readily available to consumers and less expensive than other acids (nitric acid is available for purchase, but is expensive). Mazza et al. refer that since their experiments were initiated to give expert opinions about the possibility of destroying a human body by immersing it in acids, they cannot take into account possible factors present in real-life conditions. The interest of citing the previous reports is not only to compare eventual differences between teeth or dentures exposed to acids (an excellent proposition future), but to expose the major omission of the study proposed by Ragavendra et al.: A correct analysis of behavior to chemical agents inevitably needs the values of concentrations of these to be valued. Without this, the time of expositions is only an anecdotic dada and worse still, the procedure may not be reproduced in any way. Mazza et al. and Hartnett et al. provide valuable information obtained from a rigorous methodology reproducible. Ragavendra et al. only showed an interesting experience, but an incomplete and singularly far from precisely what they offered: a technical note for forensic sciences.
