Abstract:Iris centers have been widely used in machine vision for face matching, gaze estimation, etc. However, in low resolution eye images, the iris and its surrounding region present a variety of appearance characteristics, which make it difficult to accurately locate the iris center. In this paper, we propose a robust, accurate and real-time iris center localization method by combining the facial landmark, snakuscule, circle fitting and binary connected component. Facial landmarks are used to extract an accurate eye Region of Interest (ROI). Thereafter, a fixed size circle-based active contour snakuscule is used to detect the iris center. Based on the snakuscule center and inner radius, a novel method is proposed to extract accurate iris edges for circle fitting. In addition, the quality of the detected iris center is evaluated by a circle-binary quality evaluation method. Binary connected component method is used to improve the accuracies in those unqualified images. The proposed method is tested on three publicly available databases BioID, GI4E and Talking Face Video. The result shows that it could achieve an accuracy of 94.35% on the BioID database when the normalized error is smaller than 0.05, which outperforms all state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:A time-delay of arrival collection system is built based on the four-microphone array.Real-time space 3D acoustic localization based on Monte Carlo algorithm is presented.It can quickly calculate the sound source position by using three time-delay of arrival to the microphone array.A 3D modular function is built based on the nonlinear function of acoustic lo- calization.The sound position can be localized quickly and accurately by seeking the global convergence and altering the step length according to the tolerance of accuracy.

Abstract:The Iterative Closest Point(ICP) algorithm is usually used for 3D ear recognition in the literatures. However, the high computational cost of ICP limits the application of 3D ear biometrics. In this paper, we present an efficient approach based on local feature and ICP for 3D ear recognition. The local features are detected and represented with LSP(Local Surface Patch), and used to compute the initial transformation for matching with ICP. An elite preservation strategy is introduced to refine the candidate gallery ears that a modified ICP algorithm with kd-tree index, distance and uniqueness constraints is applied to. The proposed approach achieved a rank-1 recognition rate 98.55% on Collection J2 of UND biometrics datasets. Matching an ear with a gallery requires only 1.73 sec on average.

Abstract:As an emerging class of biometrics, human ear has drawn significant attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D ear shape matching and recognition system. First, we propose a novel method for computing saliency value of each point on 3D ear point clouds, which is based on the Gaussian-weighted average of the mean curvature and can be used to sort the keypoints accordingly. Then we propose the optimal selection of the salient key points using the Poisson Disk Sampling. Finally, we fit a surface to the neighborhood of each salient keypoint using the quadratic principal manifold method, establishing the local feature descriptor of each salient keypoint. The experimental results on ear shape matching show that, compared with other similar methods, the proposed system has higher approximation precision on shape feature detection and higher matching accuracy on the ear recognition.

Abstract:In MEG studies, how to reduce the influence of background noises and improve the accuracy of localization are important issues. On the constraints that the source locations and orientations are fixed, the accuracy of the localization can be improved by using spatio-temporal data. Numerical simulation indicates that under conditions of same accuracy, the present method can significantly reduce the value of signal-to-noise by 13db, compared with the method using instantaneous data. To speed up the computation, combined head model and combined optimization algorithms were used in the present method.

It can be easily captured from a distance without a fully cooperative subject. Also, the ear has a relatively stable structure that does not change much with the age and facial expressions. Abstract:Different methods of automatic detecting are challenging problems in many fields Most of them are simply based on detection Of image or sound, and have some limitations caused by the camera's field of view or the frequency of the sound. Our system is based on sound detection and image analysis of object's motion. Sound detection adopts an algorithm of hyperbolic locating according to signal's time difference which is sensed by a comparator from two microphones. Image analysis integrates two methods into the system which are based on motion and complexion matching The proposed system utilizes both sound and image for signal processing, so it can work without serious deterioration performance in case of low resolution. Experiments on sound detection and image analysis are presented and the results are discussed. The design of the system will be applied well in intelligence Systems.

Abstract:In order to automatically find facial landmarks of a 3D facial shape, such as nose-tip and inner eye corners, this paper presents an effective approach to automatically detect landmarks of a 3D face in real time. A local surface descriptor based on partition and histogram, named sphere partition histogram descriptor, is designed to characterize local surface at a point on 3D face shape. Then we exploit the SPIDER descriptor to localize facial landmarks. The proposed algorithm is suitable for acceleration by GPU parallel computing. The experiments on FRGC v1.0 and BU-3DFE show that our algorithm outperforms other existing methods on 3D facial landmarks localization.

Abstract:This paper discusses a type of 3-dimentional rapid sound source location method, which can be widely used in underwater or air environment, such as oil and gas exploration, fish characteristics research, remote conferencing and other fields. Delay-and-sum and Fast Direction of Arrival algorithm are discussed for narrowband signal processing. Sound source positioning only need to calculate and display the power intensity of each different angle of incidence, without the need to extract the specific incident signal, so we can directly apply FDOA algorithm. Since the center frequency of the sound signal is much lower than that of radio waves, laser and other signal carriers, the boundary conditions of the narrowband signal are often not satisfied in the actual workplace. Meanwhile, the system only needs the data characteristics of a certain frequency band in most applications. Therefore, this paper studies a fast beamforming and display method for specifying the frequency band and wave velocity, and verifies the validity of the relevant method with the delay-and-sum beamformer.
Robust 3D Face Recognition by Local Shape Difference Boosting

Abstract:This paper proposes a new 3D face recognition approach, Collective Shape Difference Classifier (CSDC), to meet practical application requirements, i.e., high recognition performance, high computational efficiency, and easy implementation. We first present a fast posture alignment method which is self-dependent and avoids the registration between an input face against every face in the gallery. Then, a Signed Shape Difference Map (SSDM) is computed between two aligned 3D faces as a mediate representation for the shape comparison. Based on the SSDMs, three kinds of features are used to encode both the local similarity and the change characteristics between facial shapes. The most discriminative local features are selected optimally by boosting and trained as weak classifiers for assembling three collective strong classifiers, namely, CSDCs with respect to the three kinds of features. Different schemes are designed for verification and identification to pursue high performance in both recognition and computation. The experiments, carried out on FRGC v2 with the standard protocol, yield three verification rates all better than 97.9 percent with the FAR of 0.1 percent and rank-1 recognition rates above 98 percent. Each recognition against a gallery with 1,000 faces only takes about 3.6 seconds. These experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is not only effective but also time efficient.

Abstract:Laser-induced acoustic source has become an intense research interest because of its wideband signal components, increased autonomy, flexibility of subsurface and capability of airborne operation. It has large potential applications in undersea surveillance, port monitoring, defense missions and a variety of commercial activities such as target recognition and ocean-graphic survey. Underwater material recognition based on a remote laser-induced acoustic source is discussed in this paper. A Prony based method with damped sinusoids is used to estimate the laser-induced transient acoustic signals. Underwater acoustic recognition is studied by analyzing a single echo from a kind of material when the laser transient is incident to the material. The experimental results show that the acoustic thicknesses of material estimated by Prony's method are very close to the real ones.

Abstract:Ear detection and ear feature extraction is an essential part of ear biometric identification technology.Ear has some advantages such as low dimension,convenience of database building,color distribution uniformity and stability.Based on the fast ear detection tech-nology and the method of reversible linear transformation,This paper describes the image by force field and energy field.We locate the ear image feature points according to the character that the field lines will converge toward the local minium value of image energy.In the process of experiments,we carry out the automatic ear detection and ear feature points location and extraction.Moreover,we adjust the force field model to resolve the problem of the conflict between discreteness of image samples and continuum of force field so that ear feature points can be extracted at the closest pixel points and come to a better result.
AudioEar: Single-View Ear Reconstruction for Personalized Spatial Audio

Abstract:Spatial audio, which focuses on immersive 3D sound rendering, is widely applied in the acoustic industry. One of the key problems of current spatial audio rendering methods is the lack of personalization based on different anatomies of individuals, which is essential to produce accurate sound source positions. In this work, we address this problem from an interdisciplinary perspective. The rendering of spatial audio is strongly correlated with the 3D shape of human bodies, particularly ears. To this end, we propose to achieve personalized spatial audio by reconstructing 3D human ears with single-view images. First, to benchmark the ear reconstruction task, we introduce AudioEar3D, a high-quality 3D ear dataset consisting of 112 point cloud ear scans with RGB images. To self-supervisedly train a reconstruction model, we further collect a 2D ear dataset composed of 2,000 images, each one with manual annotation of occlusion and 55 landmarks, named AudioEar2D. To our knowledge, both datasets have the largest scale and best quality of their kinds for public use. Further, we propose AudioEarM, a reconstruction method guided by a depth estimation network that is trained on synthetic data, with two loss functions tailored for ear data. Lastly, to fill the gap between the vision and acoustics community, we develop a pipeline to integrate the reconstructed ear mesh with an off-the-shelf 3D human body and simulate a personalized Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF), which is the core of spatial audio rendering. Abstract:Biometrics is a critical component of cybersecurity that identifies persons by verifying their behavioral and physical traits. In biometric-based authentication, each individual can be correctly recognized based on their intrinsic behavioral or physical features, such as face, fingerprint, iris, and ears. This work proposes a novel approach for human identification using 3D ear images. Usually, in conventional methods, the probe image is registered with each gallery image using computational heavy registration algorithms, making it practically infeasible due to the time-consuming recognition process. Therefore, this work proposes a recognition pipeline that reduces the one-to-one registration between probe and gallery. First, a deep learning-based algorithm is used for ear detection in 3D side face images. Second, a statistical ear model known as a 3D morphable ear model (3DMEM), was constructed to use as a feature extractor from the detected ear images. Finally, a novel recognition algorithm named you morph once (YMO) is proposed for human recognition that reduces the computational time by eliminating one-to-one registration between probe and gallery, which only calculates the distance between the parameters stored in the gallery and the probe. The experimental results show the significance of the proposed method for a real-time application.

Abstract:A 3D ear extraction algorithm based on Contourlet transform is proposed.The Contourlet transform can extract the intrinsic geometrical information of image,and then decompose it into different direction on multiple scales.The probability model of ear can be established by gathering the statistical distribution of the Contourlet coefficients of ear edge in Contourlet subbands.With this model,the edges other than ear edges in the era can be filtered,only ear edges are extracted.Finally,ear contour can be easily obtained by computing the convex hull of these edges.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for the 3D ear extraction with satisfactory ear recognition.
A PC-Based System for Automated Iris Recognition under Open Environment

Abstract:This paper presents an entirely automatic system designed to realize accurate and fast personal identification from the iris images acquired under open environment. The acquisition device detects the appearance of a user at any moment using an ultrasonic transducer, guides the user in positioning himself in the acquisition range and acquires the best iris image of the user through quality evaluation. Iris recognition is done using the bandpass characteristic of wavelets and wavelet transform principles for detecting singularities to extract iris features and adopting Hamming distance to match iris codes. The authentication service software can enroll a user's iris image into a database and perform verification of a claimed identity or identification of an unknown entity. The identification rate is high and the recognition result is available about 6 s starting at iris image acquisition. This system is promising to be used in applications requiring personal identification.
An Ear Canal Deformation Based User Authentication Using Ear Wearable Devices

Abstract:Biometric-based authentication is gaining increasing attention for wearables and mobile applications. Meanwhile, the growing adoption of sensors in wearables also provides opportunities to capture novel wearable biometrics. In this work, we propose EarDynamic, an ear canal deformation-based user authentication using in-ear wearables. EarDynamic provides continuous and passive user authentication and is transparent to users. It leverages ear canal deformation that combines the unique static geometry and dynamic motions of the ear canal when the user is speaking for authentication. It utilizes an acoustic sensing approach to capture the ear canal deformation with the built-in microphone and speaker of the in-ear wearable. Specifically, it first emits well-designed inaudible beep signals and records the reflected signals from the ear canal. It then analyzes the reflected signals and extracts fine-grained acoustic features that correspond to the ear canal deformation for user authentication. Our extensive experimental evaluation shows that EarDynamic can achieve a recall of 97.38% and an F1 score of 96.84%. Results also show that our system works well under different noisy environments with various daily activities.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (mmWave) based sensing is a significant technique that enables innovative smart applications, e.g., voice recognition. The existing works in this area require direct sensing of the human's near-throat region and consequently have limited applicability in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios. This paper proposes AmbiEar, the first mmWave based voice recognition approach applicable in NLoS scenarios. AmbiEar is based on the insight that the human's voice causes correlated vibrations of the surrounding objects, regardless of the human's position and posture. Therefore, AmbiEar regards the surrounding objects as ears that can perceive sound and realizes indirect sensing of the human's voice by sensing the vibration of the surrounding objects. By incorporating the designs like common component extraction, signal superimposition, and encoder-decoder network, AmbiEar tackles the challenges induced by low-SNR and distorted signals. We implement AmbiEar on a commercial mmWave radar and evaluate its performance under different settings. The experimental results show that AmbiEar has a word recognition accuracy of 87.21% in NLoS scenarios and reduces the recognition error by 35.1%, compared to the direct sensing approach.

Abstract:Smart wearable devices have recently become one of the major technological trends and been widely adopted by the general public. Wireless earphones, in particular, have seen a skyrocketing growth due to its great usability and convenience. With the goal of seeking a more unobtrusive wearable authentication method that the users can easily use and conveniently access, in this study we present EarEcho as a novel, affordable, user-friendly biometric authentication solution. EarEcho takes advantages of the unique physical and geometrical characteristics of human ear canal and assesses the content-free acoustic features of in-ear sound waves for user authentication in a wearable and mobile manner. We implemented the proposed EarEcho on a proof-of-concept prototype and tested it among 20 subjects under diverse application scenarios. We can achieve a recall of 94.19% and precision of 95.16% for one-time authentication, while a recall of 97.55% and precision of 97.57% for continuous authentication. EarEcho has demonstrated its stability over time and robustness to cope with the uncertainties on the varying background noises, body motions, and sound pressure levels.
