Abstract:Four novel cycloartanes, named sphaerophysone A (1), B (2), C (3) and D (4), were isolated from the ethanol extract of Sphaerophysa salsula (Pall.) DC. The structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral evidence, and the stereochemistry of compound 1 was defined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Sphaerophysone B (2) may be an artifact formed in the isolation procedure.

Abstract:Two new 18-norschiartane-type schinortriterpenoids, namely wuwezidilactones Q (1) and R (2) were isolated from the stems of Schisandra lancifolia. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of the new compounds were further determined by ROESY and an empirical comparison of their experimental ECD spectra with literature.

Abstract:Four dimeric diketopiperazine stereoisomers (1-4) including two new ones (1-2) had been isolated from the culture broth of one marine-derived fungus Aspergillus sp. Z3, which was found in the gut of a marine isopod Ligia exotica. The planner structures and absolute configurations of the new compounds were determined by combination of NMR, HRESIMS, electronic circular dichroism calculation, Marfey's method as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their cytotoxicity against the prostate cancer PC3 cell line was assayed by the MTT method.

Abstract:Two new ent-kaurane-derived diterpene derivatives, phyllostacins A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of Isodon phyllostachys, together with two known compounds, irroratin A (3) and serrin B (4). Both 1 and 2 were found to be present as diastereoisomers. In the case of 1, the corresponding diastereoisomeric diacetates 5 and 6 were prepared and separated. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic methods, in combination with MS experiments. In (D-5)pyridine solution, the two epimers of 1 are present in equal amounts, but in CDCl3 or CD3OD, the (S)-epimer predominates in the mixture of hemiacetals.

Abstract:Four undescribed sesquiterpenes, atramacrolodes A‐D (1‐4), along with six known compounds 5‐10 were isolated from the rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala. Compound 3 possessed a new skeleton based on an unprecedented carton‐carton connection. Their structures were determined by UV, IR, HRESIMS, NMR spectra, 13C NMR calculation with DP4+ analysis, and the comparison of experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Compounds 5 and 8 showed protective effects against paracetamol‐induced liver cell injury.

Abstract:A chemical investigation of marine sponge Jaspis stellifera, collected from South China Sea, led to the isolation of two new compounds, Jaspiferin A and B (1-2), and six known compounds, gibepyrone F (3), p-hydroxy benzaldehyde (4), 3-Indole-3-aldehyde (5), Thymine (6), 24(28)-dehydroaplysterol (7), (25s)-26-methylene-cholest-4-en-3-one (8). Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis in association with physical and chemical properties, as well as comparison of their spectral data with these reported in literatures. The biogenetic transformation of compound 2 was also speculated.

Abstract:Three new meroterpenoids, asperaustins A-C (1-3), and seven known analogues (4-10) were isolated from a marine-derived Aspergillus sp. fungus. The structures and absolute configurations of these new compounds were unequivocally determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Asperaustin A (1) possesses an unusual spiro[4.5]deca-3,6-dien-2-one moiety with a unique 5/6/6/6/5 pentacyclic skeleton. The absolute configurations of austinoneol A (7) and precalidodehydroaustin (9) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses using Cu K alpha radiation for the first time.

Abstract:Seven undescribed monoterpene indole alkaloids alstoscholarinines A‒G, along with nineteen known alkaloids, were isolated from the branches of Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br. The isolated alkaloids were classified into ten framework types. The structures of the undescribed alkaloids were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, ECD calculation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Alstoscholarinine A is an unreported and unusual monoterpene indole alkaloid incorporating three nitrogen atoms, characterized by a compact 6/5/6/6/6/5 hexacyclic system bearing a piperidine ring and a unique oxazolidine ring. Alstoscholarinine B represents the first naturally C-17 nor-isositsirikine-type alkaloid. Plausible biosynthetic pathways of alstoscholarinines A and B were proposed. All isolates were evaluated for their vasorelaxant activities against phenylephrine-induced contraction of rat mesenteric arteries. Among them, seven alkaloids showed significant vasorelaxant activities with EC50 values less than 10 μM. Importantly, the akuammicine-type alkaloids in this study showed much better vasorelaxant activities than other framework type alkaloids, indicating that this type of alkaloid may be a valuable source for the discovery of vasodilators. A preliminary structure-activity relationship for vasorelaxant activities of the isolated akuammicine-type alkaloids is also discussed.

Abstract:Four new, highly oxygenated nortriterpenoids with unique schisanartane skeletons, micrandilactones D-G (1-4), have been isolated from the leaves and stems of Schisandra micrantha, and their structures have been elucidated on the basis of extensive spectral studies. The postulated biogenetic sequences of sixteen highly oxygenated nortriterpenoids and bisnortriterpenoids with new skeletons from three Schisandra species are discussed and have been compared from a chemotaxonomic standpoint.

Abstract:A structurally novel 8,9-seco-eudesma-9,4:8,12-dilactone sesquiterpenoid, chlorajapodiolide (1), a new eudesmane sesquiterpenoid, chlorajapotriol (2), a new lindenane-type sesquiterpenoid dimer, chlorajaponilide I (3), and four known lindenane-type sesquiterpenoid dimers were isolated from the whole plant of Chloranthus japonicus. Their structures were established through extensive analysis of NMR spectroscopic data in combination with mass spectrometry. All compounds were evaluated for cytotoxicities against four human cancer cell lines A549, HCT116, MGC803, and HepG2.

Abstract:Anisotanols A–D (1–4), four new compounds possessing an unprecedented sesquiterpenoid skeleton with a congested tricyclic 6/3/5 ring system, were obtained from Anisodus tanguticus. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic techniques, and the absolute configurations were confirmed via ECD calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffractions. A putative biosynthetic pathway for these compounds was proposed. Biological evaluation disclosed that compound 3 showed anti-angiogenic activity by inhibiting the viability, migration, and tube formation in HUVECs.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Spirophyllines A-D (1-4), four new spirooxindole alkaloids all characterized bythe spiro[pyrrolidin-3,3 '-oxindole]core and a rare isoxazolidine ring, were isolated from Uncariarhynchophylla. Their structures were determined by spectroscopicmethods and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Based on the biomimeticsemisynthesis strategy, compounds 1-8 were synthesized in three steps via the key reactions of 1,3-dipolarcycloaddition and Krapcho decarboxylation from corynoxeine. Interestingly,compound 3 showed moderate inhibitory activity againstthe K(v)1.5 potassium channel (IC50 = 9.1 mu M).
