Abstract:A grafted epoxy resin was prepared at room temperature using aromatic poly(ester urethane) based on toluene diisocyanate and high molecular weight epoxy resin. Chemical interaction between monomers was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and, in this paper, the interaction of hydrogen bonds from the self- associated polyurethane is discussed. The cross- section morphology of the polyurethane was observed using a digital microscope. The thermal stability of the grafted epoxy resin was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. Three samples were heated at three different heating rates (10, 15 and 20 K min(-1)), and the isothermal kinetic parameters were determined using a modified non- linear integral isoconversional method. Thermal experimental data demonstrated the high thermal stability of grafted epoxy resin and showed two stages of mass loss within 50- 500 degrees C. Thermal degradation mechanisms are discussed by means of evaluation of the activation energy E-alpha at the extent of degradation conversion alpha. A maximum value of E-alpha=253.9 kJ mol(-1) was obtained at alpha=0.3.
