Abstract:Based on the 4,4 '- bipyridine organic linker, metal-organic frameworks of Co-2(4,4 '-bpy)(3)(NO3)(4)center dot xH(2)O (CB-MOF) have been prepared. The pressure-dependent structure evolution of CB-MOF has been investigated up to 11 GPa. An isostructural phase transition was observed at about 6 GPa followed by negative compressibility along the b axis.

Abstract:The metal-organic framework {[Fe(2,2'-bipyridine)(CN)(4)](2)Co-(4,4'-bipyridine)}center dot 4H(2)O (Fe2Co-MOF) with single-chain magnetism undergoes an intermetallic charge transfer that converts the Fe2Co charge/spin configurations from Fe-LS(3+)-Co-HS(2+)-Fe-LS(3+) to Fe-LS(2+)-Co-LS(3+)-Fe-LS(3+) (LS = low spin, HS = high spin) around 220 K under ambient pressure. A series of coherent phase transitions in structure, magnetism, permittivity and ferroelectricity are found to take place accompanying with the charge transfer, making Fe2Co-MOF a unique ferroelectric single-chain magnet at low temperature. Moreover, our detailed measurements of magnetization, dielectric constant, and Raman scattering under high pressures illustrate that the charge transfer as well as the resulting multifunctional transitions can be readily induced to occur at room temperature by applying a tiny external pressure of about 0.5 kbar. The present study thus provides a pressure well-controllable multifunctional material with potential applications in a broad temperature region across room temperature.

Abstract:A series of metal-organic frameworks representing a non-interpenetrated framework analogue of MOF-14 have been synthesized by using two different linkers, 4,4',4''-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-benzoic acid (H(3)BTB) and 4,4'-bipyridine (Bpy). Interestingly, the transition metal ions in the paddle-wheel metal clusters could be exchanged by other transition metal ions via a direct single-crystal to single-crystal transformation. This post-synthesis route can be used for synthesis of isomorphous metal-organic frameworks that cannot be obtained by direct synthesis.
Syntheses, Structures and Physical Properties of Transition Metal-Organic Frameworks Assembled from Trigonal Heterofunctional Ligands

Abstract:Six novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {Mn(bpydb)(bpyHdbH)}(n) (1) {[Co(2)(bpydb)(2)](H(2)O)(0.5)}(n) (2), {[Ni(0.5)(bpydbH)(H(2)O)](DMF)(2)}(n) (3), {[Cu(2)(bpydb)(2)](H(2)O)(0.5)}(n) (4), {Zn(bpyHdb)(2)}(n) (5) and {[Cd(0.5)(bpydb)(0.5)(DMF)](H(2)O)}(n) (6), were successfully synthesized by assembling transition metal salts with trigonal heterofunctional ligand 4,4'-(4,4'-bipyridine-2,6-diyl) dibenzoic acid (bpydbH(2)) under hydrothermal and/or solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a rare 4-fold interpenetrating (3,5)-connected framework with hms-type topology. Isostructural compounds 2 and 4, constructed by M(2)(COO)(4) secondary building units, exhibit a robust 3D framework with alb topological type in 2-fold interpenetrating mode. Compound 3 consists of 2D (4,4) networks, which are further assembled into the new topological framework with the symbol (5(3)·6(2)·8)(5(3)·6(3))(2) through O-HO interactions. Compound 5 manifests a novel 4-connected interpenetrating framework, constructed by 2D (4,4) layers and interbedded N-HO interactions. Non-interpenetrating honeycomb networks are observed in compound 6, and further packed into a 3D framework featuring 1D channels. The magnetic susceptibility of compound 2 indicates antiferromagnetic interactions between cobalt ions. The photoluminescent properties of 5 and 6 were investigated in the solid state at room temperature.
Structural and Optical Modulations in Covalent Organic Frameworks via Pressure-treated Engineering

Abstract:Piezochromic materials, exhibiting outstanding pressure-responsive performance including pressure-induced emission en-hancement (PIEE), blue-shifted emission, white-light emitting and so on, are crucial in various fields such as in advanced sensing and smart photonics. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an emerging class of crystalline porous materials (CPMs), possess dynamic structures and adjustable photophysical properties, making them promising candidates for the development of piezochromic materials. Nevertheless, this area remains relatively understudied. In this study, a successful synthesis of a series of bicarbazole-based COFs with varying topologies, dimensions, and linkages was conducted, followed by an investigation of their structural and optical properties under hydrostatic pressure generated by a diamond anvil cell. Consequently, these COFs exhibited distinct piezochromic behaviors, particularly an astonishing PIEE phenomenon with a 16-fold increase in fluorescence intensity from three-dimensional COFs, surpassing the performance of CPMs and nearly all known organic small molecules with PIEE behavior. In contrast, two-dimensional COFs, with rigid and conjugated structures, typically showed red-shifted and reduced emission, while the flexible variants exhibited rare blue-shifted emission. Mecha-nism research further revealed that these different piezochromic behaviors were primarily determined by interlayer distance and interaction. This study represents the first systematic exploration of the structures and optical properties of COFs through pressure-treated engineering and provides a new perspective on the design of piezochromic materials.

Abstract:Investigating the reversible structural transformation of stimuli-responsive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through single-crystal diffraction and establishing a structure-property relationship pose a significant challenge. Herein, the controllable synthesis of Co-MOF-1 and Co-MOF-2 by incorporating water into the solvothermal synthesis process is presented. In comparison to the trinuclear [Co3(COO)8]2- clusters found in Co-MOF-1, Co-MOF-2 presents a variable dinuclear [Co2(COO)4(H2O)5] cluster. Single crystal diffraction studies, utilizing synchrotron radiation, confirm the reversible two-step transformation. The presence of various organic solvents induces the single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-to-SC) transformation of Co-MOF-2. This transformation is initiated by the cleavage of three coordinated water molecules and subsequent coordination of carboxylates in the ligand, resulting in solvatochromic behavior. Further, the reversible stimuli-responsive behavior can also be rapidly induced under the stimuli of heat, vacuum, and X-rays. This study successfully demonstrates the crystallographic and spectroscopic snapshots of dynamic coordination bonds in MOFs and contributes to a deeper understanding of the structure-property relationship. Based on the dynamic coordination bond of dinuclear cobalt clusters, the breakage/formation of coordination bonds between cobalt ions and H2O/carboxylic acids is realized. Structural analysis of snapshots during the solvatochromic reaction reveals a two-step-SC-to-SC reversible structural transformation. As a multi-stimuli-responsive MOF, this transformation can also be achieved under the stimulation of heat, vacuum, and X-rays.image

Abstract:We prepared a 3 d –4 f heterobimetallic CuEu–organic framework NBU-8 with a density of 1921 kg m −3 belonging to the family of dense packing materials (dense metal–organic frameworks or MOFs). This MOF material was prepared from 4-(pyrimidin-5-yl)benzoic acid (HPBA) with a bifunctional ligand site as a tripodal ligand and Cu 2+ and Eu 3+ as the metal centres; the molecular formula is Cu 3 Eu 2 (PBA) 6 (NO 3 ) 6 ·H 2 O. This material is a very promising dimethylformamide (DMF) molecular chemical sensor. Systematic high-pressure studies of NBU-8 were carried out by powder X-ray diffraction, high-pressure X-ray diffraction and molecular dynamics simulation. The high-pressure experiment shows that the (006) diffraction peak of the crystal structure moves toward a low angle with increasing pressure, accompanied by the phenomenon that the d -spacing increases, and as the pressure increases, the (10-2) diffraction peak moves to a higher angle, the amplitude of the d -spacing is significantly reduced and finally merges with the (006) diffraction peak into one peak. The amplitude of the d -spacing is significantly reduced, indicating that NBU-8 compresses and deforms along the a -axis direction when subjected to uniform pressure. This is caused by tilting of the ligands to become more vertical along the c direction, leading to its expansion. This allows greater contraction along the a direction. We also carried out a Rietveld structure refinement and a Birch–Murnaghan solid-state equation fitting for the high-pressure experimental results. We calculated the bulk modulus of the material to be 45.68 GPa, which is consistent with the calculated results. The framework is among the most rigid MOFs reported to date, exceeding that of Cu–BTC. Molecular dynamics simulations estimated that the mechanical energy absorbed by the system when pressurized to 5.128 GPa was 249.261 kcal mol −1 . The present work will provide fresh ideas for the study of mechanical energy in other materials.

Abstract:Two new porous metal-organic frameworks with the formulas [Co(btdc)(bpp)(H2O)(0.5)]center dot 8H(2)O (1) and Co-2(btdc)(2)(bpe)(2)center dot 19H(2)O (2) (H(2)btdc = 2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid, bpp = 1,3-di(4-pyridyl) propane, bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridinyl)ethane) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). 1 features a three-dimensional (3D) self-interpenetrating framework which results from three-fold interpenetrating diamond network linked by the bpp ligands. 2 exhibits a three-dimensional two-fold interpenetrating pillar-layered framework with alpha-Po topology. The magnetic study of 1 shows that there exist antiferromagnetic interactions between the Co(II) centres.

Abstract:In metal-organic-framework (MOF) perovskites, both magnetic and ferroelectric orderings can be readily realized by compounding spin and charge degrees of freedom. The hydrogen bonds that bridge the magnetic framework and organic molecules have long been thought of as a key in generating multiferroic properties. However, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we combine neutron diffraction, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and THz spectroscopy techniques to thoroughly investigate the dynamical properties of the multiferroic MOF candidate [CH$_3$NH$_3$][Co(HCOO)$_3$] through its multiple phase transitions. The wide range of energy resolutions reachable by these techniques enables us to scrutinize the coupling between the molecules and the framework throughout the phase transitions and interrogate a possible magnetoelectric coupling. Our results also reveal a structural change around 220 K which may be associated with the activation of a nodding donkey mode of the methylammonium molecule due to the ordering of the CH$_3$ groups. Upon the occurrence of the modulated phase transition around 130 K, the methylammonium molecules undergo a freezing of its reorientational motions which is concomitant with a change of the lattice parameters and anomalies of collective lattice vibrations. No significant change has been however observed in the lattice dynamics around the magnetic ordering, which therefore indicates the absence of a substantial magneto-electric coupling in zero-field.

Abstract:Three novel 3D metal-organic frameworks of [Ni-2(hfpdpt)(bpy)(2)(H2O)(2)](H2O)(8) (1), [Ni-3(Hhfpdpt)(2)-( bpy)(4)](H2O)(2) (2), and [Mn-2(hfpdpt)(H2O)(2)] (3) have been synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of Ni-II or Mn-II nitrate, 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic acid (H(4)hfpdpt), and 4,4'-bipyridyl (bpy). Complex 1 self-assembles into a 3D framework with unconventional 4-connected network topology, while 2 and 3 exhibit two kinds of unusual (4,8)-connected topological networks. Notably, in 1 and 2, the bpy coligand participates in the construction of their 3D frameworks, and the pH value also plays an important role to tune their space arrangements, while in 3, the bpy coligand is not involved in the final crystalline lattice. Furthermore, a detailed investigation on their magnetic and adsorptive properties is carried out.

Abstract:Three new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Zn(L)(HCOO)(H2O)]center dot H2O)(n) (1), {Cd(L)(2)}(n) (2) and {Co(L)(BDC)(0.5)(H2O)}(n) (3) [HL = 3,5-di(pyridine-4-yl)benzoic acid, H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid] were synthesized by hydro/solvothermal reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 is a two-dimensional (2D) network with {6(3)} topology, which is further assembled into a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture through hydrogen bonding interactions. Complex 2 is a 2-fold interpenetrating 3D framework with a point (Schlafli) symbol of {6(3)}{6(7).8(3)}, while 3 is a 3D net formed by interpenetration of 2D bilayers (2D + 2D -> 3D) with a point (Schlafli) symbol of {6(3)}{6(6)}. Selective and hysteretic sorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) was found for 3 at 195 K, and the photoluminescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated.

Abstract:Four new metal-organic frameworks have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by the self-assembly of a N-centered multidentate bifunctional ligand (H2L: 4,4'-((4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)azanediyl)dibenzoic acid) with different N-containing heterocyclic coligands (BIMB = 4,4'-bis((imidazol-1-yl)methyl)biphenyl, BPY = 4,4'-bipyridine, BIP = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl) and transition metal salts (Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, Zn(NO3)2 center dot 6H(2)O). They are [Co(L)(BIMB)(0.5)(H2O)]center dot 2DMF (1), [Co(L)(BPY)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]center dot 3DMF center dot 2H(2)O (2), [Zn-2(L)(2)]center dot 4DMF center dot 3H(2)O (3), and [Zn-2(L)(2)(BIP)]center dot 2DMF center dot 2H(2)O (4). Compound 1 is an infrequent 3,4-connected self-penetration three-dimensional (3D) architecture. Compound 2 has been classified as a trinodal (3,4,4)-connected 3D sqc69 framework. Compound 3 displays a 2-fold interpenetrating 3D net based on the [Zn-2(CO2)(4)] units which are connected by L2- ligands. For compound 4, the larger potential voids lead to a 4-fold interpenetration, which can be classified as type IIIa. In addition, their thermal stability, the adsorption isotherms, and optical properties have been studied in detail.

Abstract:Bismuth oxide haloids BiOXs (X = Cl, Br, I) have received attention as photocatalytic materials after TiO2 in recent years due to their unique layered structures. Using an ab initio evolutionary methodology structure search method, we systematically investigate the evolution of BiOF structures under pressure. It is found that BiOF can maintain its layered structure up to 300 GPa. Three stable new phases with Pnma, P% 3m1 and Cmcm structure at a pressure of 10, 66, and 286 GPa have been identified for the first time. All the newly found phases are two-dimensional layered structures characterized by Bi-O slabs interleaved with F- anion slabs. Moreover, all three phases are indirect semiconductors with wide band gaps. It is found that pressure can cause great change in the band gaps of BiOF. The band gaps of the high-pressure phases of BiOF vary nearly linearly with pressure but exhibit different pressure trends. The electronic structure, structural stability, phase transition mechanisms and evolution of the Bi-O slabs of BiOF under pressure are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with highly ordered porous structure, tunable bandgap, large specific surface area and structural diversity, provide an appealing platform for the development of stimulus response, sensing, imaging and optoelectronics. Among various tuning methods, pressure engineering using the diamond anvil cell is a highly powerful in-situ technique, which can efficiently modulate the structural and optical properties of MOFs/COFs. This is beyond the realization of traditional chemical methods. This review outlines the research progress in the experiment-oriented discovery of new phases or unique properties under high pressure, including phase transition, abnormal compression, photoluminescence (PL) discoloration and enhancement. Notably, the improvement of PL quantum yield in MOFs could be achieved by pressure-treated engineering and hydrogen-bonding cooperativity effect. We also propose and establish the relationship between structure and optical properties under high pressure. Finally, the challenge and outlook of the current fields are summarized. We hope that this review will supply guidance for comprehending the development of high-pressure MOF/COF-related research fields, and offer novel strategies for designing more high-performance MOF/COF materials to ultimately expand their applications.

Abstract:Two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Co-2(btec)(bipy)(2)(DMF)]center dot DMF center dot 3H(2)O (1) (btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate; bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine; DMF = N, N'-dimethylformamide) and Co-2(btec)(bipy)(DMF)(2) (2) were synthesized with the same starting materials under different solvothermal conditions. The higher temperature favors the generation of compound 2, while the slightly lower temperature with the higher bipy ratio leads to the porous structure of compound 1. Their structures are determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractions. Compound 1 is a 3D pillared-layer framework with interconnected channels along two directions after the removal of free guest molecules. The BET (Brunauer Emmett Teller) surface area of 1 was calculated to be 596 m(2) g(-1) by nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. The hydrogen adsorption isotherm at 77 K shows an excess uptake of 1.1 wt% at 15 bar. The heat (Q(st)) of hydrogen adsorption was estimated to be 7.3 kJ mol(-1) at zero coverage. In compound 2, the wave-like layers constructed with btec are further pillared by bipy, giving rise to the 3D framework with the 1D channels occupied by coordinated DMF molecules.

Topological analysis indicates that 1 is a 3D (3,5)-connected framework with the short point symbol of (63)(67·83). The magnetic experiments reveal that 1 exhibits typical ferromagnetic exchange in Ni(II) ions.

Abstract:On page 2334, R. Q. Zou, Y. L. Zhao, and co-workers present a porous metal-organic framework (MOF) that serves as a platform for studying the metal exchange effect on both CO2 adsorption and catalytic fixation. The effect is demonstrated by catalytic CO2 cycloaddition with propylene oxide to produce propylene carbonate. Molecular dynamic simulations are carried out to further confirm the catalytic performance of these MOFs on chemical fixation of CO2 to carbonates. This research sheds light on how metal exchange could influence the intrinsic properties of MOFs.

Abstract:Four new metal-organic frameworks {[Zn(L)]·2.6H2O}n (1), [Cd(L)(H2O)(DMA)]n (2), [Co3(L)2(HCOO)2(H2O)2]n (3) and {[Mn(L)(H2O)]·DMF}n (4) [H2L = pyridine-3, 5-bis(phenyl-4-carboxylic acid), DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffractions, IR and thermogravimetric analyses. 1 is a three-dimensional (3D) framework with {46·64} topology, while 2 is a 3D framework formed by parallel/parallel inclined interpenetration of two-dimensional (2D) networks with {63} topology. 3 processes a 3D framework structure with point symbol of {4·82}2{42·812·10}, and 4 shows bilayer structure with {43·63} topology, which is further assembled into a 3D supramolecular architecture by hydrogen bonding interactions. Gas adsorption property of 1, 2 and 4, photoluminescence of 1 and 2 as well as magnetic property of 4 were investigated.

Abstract:Themetal-organic framework (MOF) materials could exhibit advanced applications in many fields and their mechanical stability upon external stimuli is extremely important for the applications. Here, we discovered a Cd(II)-based metal-organic framework (Cd-MOF) exhibits a very high structural stability and the Cd-MOF structure remains stable and reversible upon compression up to at least 28 GPa, a pressure that has never been reported before. Moreover, this Cd-MOF material shows an obvious change in the photoluminescence (PL) emission upon compression, which has blue-green luminance at ambient conditions, while the blue emission is preserved but the green emission is quenched at above 5 GPa. This transition in PL emission is due to a pressure-induced framework transition, which is caused by an anisotropic compression of Cd-MOF framework under pressure, as revealed by our theoretical simulations. Our results show that such highly stable MOF framework could exhibit a potential for applications under extreme conditions as a novel optical material.

Abstract:A 2D Cd- based metal- organic framework with moderate coordination bond strength and adequate framework flexibility was obtained by self- assembly, namely {[Cd(HL)(BPY)(0.5)(H2O)]center dot (H2O)-H-2} n (1), where H3L=4,4',4.-(nitrilotris(methylene))tribenzoic acid, BPY=4,4'-bipyridine. Due to the unique structural features, under the stimulation of metal ions (Zn2+/Ni2+/Co2+), 1 gradually transforms into the MOF structures dominated by the corresponding metal ions (2, 3, and 4). During this process, with the exchanges of Cd2+.Zn2+, Cd2+.Ni2+, and Cd2+.Co2+, the free Cd2+ and L-3- in the channel of 1 fuse with the backbone, leading to the channel space expansion and secondary building unit ( SBU) transformation to form a tunable backbone. The photocatalytic CO2 reduction results show that the new structures obtained by ion exchange do not have a great improvement in catalytic efficiency, but have a great increase in product selectivity (3 demonstrated 100% CO selectivity).
