Abstract:A new dinuclear complex of 6-methylpicolinic acid N-oxide (6-mepicno) with lanthanum(III) ion, La2(6-mepicno)6·6H2O, was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, thermogravimetric analysis and IR spectra. The structure of the complex was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the complex, the two lanthanum(III) ions were coordinated by six 6-mepicno and two water molecules, and the coordination number of the lanthanum(III) ion is nine. However, the 6-mepicno adopted different coordination modes, acting as both chelating bidentate and bridging bidentate ligands. The coordination polyhedron is a distorted tricapped trigonal prism. The LaO bond lengths are in the range of 0.2441(2)–0.2760(2) nm.

Abstract:A series of mononuclear lanthanide-based coordination compounds was obtained under mild synthetic conditions and fully characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals six isomorphic compounds of type [Ln(NO3)(4picH)2(H2O)4](NO3)2 (Ln3+ = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5), Er (6)), in which 4picH is the zwitterionic form of the 4-picolinic acid. Except for compounds 3 and 6, a study into the emissive properties of the compounds was carried out, revealing a ligand-sensitized lanthanide-characteristic luminescence. Compounds 2 and 4 are candidates for luminescent probes in solution. At the same time, the chromaticity data for 5 revealed a potential white-light emitter with a correlated color temperature (CCT) value of 6570 K. Alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements, supported by theoretical calculations, showed a field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization and a single-ion magnet behavior for compound 5.

Abstract:Four series lanthanide coordination compounds, [Ln(bpdc)(ox)0.5(H2O)]n·nH2O (Ln = La (1), Ce (2), Gd (3)), [Ln(bpdc)(ox)0.5(H2O)2]n (Ln = Ce (4), Pr (5), Nd (6)), [Ln2(bpdc)2(ox)(H2O)4]n·4nH2O (Ln = Nd (7), Sm (8)), [Ln2(bpdc)2(ox)(H2O)4]·H2O (Ln = Er (9), Yb (10)) (H2bpdc = 2,2′-bipyridine-6,6′-dicarboxylic acid, H2ox = oxalic acid) were achieved under hydrothermal conditions by the reactions of lanthanide trichlorides with a rigid bipyridyl derivative and oxalic acid. Compounds 1–3 present a 6-connected hxl topological net with binuclear [Ln2(bpdc)2]2+ units. Compounds 4–6 display a 3-connected ths ThSi2 topological 3D framework with butterfly-like structure. Compounds 7–8 possess a ladder-shaped chain, and further linked by hydrogen bonds to form a 2D supramolecular layer. Compounds 9–10 show a binuclear molecular structure, and a 2D supramolecular layer structure is formed through hydrogen bonding interactions. Meanwhile, the reaction temperature and pH play important roles on the ultimate structures. These lanthanide compounds exhibit typical visible and near-infrared luminescence, as well as good thermal stability.

Abstract:Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (LnIII). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Two novel series of coordination frameworks [Ln(bta)(H2O)(2)]center dot nH(2)O center dot mEtOH (Ln = La 1a, n = 4.5, m = 0; Ln = Cc 1b, n = 4, m = 0; Ln = Pr 1c, n = 2.88, m = 0.35) and [Ln(2)(bta)(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot nH(2)O (Ln = La 2a, n = 2.14; Ln = Cc 2b, Pr 2c, n = 2) were synthesized by the reaction of 1,3,5-benzenetriacetic acid (H(3)bta) with the corresponding lanthanide salts using different methods. X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that all six complexes have 3D channel structures, but in the first series of complexes, each bta(3-) ligand adopts a cis, trans, trans conformation and acts as a mu(5)-bridge linking five lanthanide atoms, while in the second series, the bta(3-) ligands adopt cis, trans, trans and cis, cis, cis conformations and act as mu(6)- and mu(5)-bridges, respectively. Thus two series of complexes have the same metal atoms and ligands but different structures. The results show that the flexible triacid ligand is versatile and can adopt different conformations according to different reaction conditions. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes le and 2c showed that both complexes exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions between the Pr(III) ions.
Two kinds of 2,4-dichlorobenzoate-based lanthanide coordination polymers tuned by 4,4′-bipyridine: Syntheses, structures, photoluminescence, and magnetism

Abstract:Ln(NO3)3·nH2O reacted with 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-HDCB) and NaOH under solvothermal conditions of water and ethanol to yield four lanthanide-organic coordination polymers (CPs) [Eu(2,4-DCB)3(CH3CH2OH)2] (1) and [Ln(2,4-DCB)3(H2O)] [Ln = Gd (2), Tb (3), Dy (4)]. The second ligand 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) was introduced into the above reaction systems to provide four new lanthanide-organic CPs [Ln2(2,4-DCB)6(4,4'-bpy)(H2O)2] [Ln = Eu (5), Gd (6), Tb (7), Dy (8)]. Single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that CPs 1 and 2 possess similar one-dimensional (1D) structures, and CPs 2–4 and 5–8 are isostructural, respectively. In 1–4, the 2,4-DCB anions bridge the Ln(III) ions to form a 1D chain. In 5–8, six 2,4-DCB anions link two Ln(III) ions into a binuclear Ln2(2,4-DCB)6 unit, and the Ln2(2,4-DCB)6 units are further connected by the 4,4'-bpy co-ligands to generate a 1D chain. The photoluminescent and magnetic properties of 1–8 were investigated.

Abstract:Reaction of hydrated lanthanide (III) nitrates and 4'-(3-carboxyphenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (HL) under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of auxiliary ligands afforded four series of lanthanide coordination polymers, [Ln2(L)2(ox)2(H2O)2]n (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2)), [Ln(L)(glu)]n (Ln = Eu (3)), [Ln(L)(adip)(H2O)]n (Ln = Pr (4), Sm (5)), [Ln2(L)2(1,3-bdc)2]n (Ln = Pr (6), Nd (7), Sm (8), Eu (9)), where H2ox, H2glu, H2adip and H2(1,3-bdc) denote oxalic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid and benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid, which have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 possess similar structures and display a two dimensional 6-connected hxl net ground on loop-like binuclear Ln2 units with the (36·46·53) topology. Compound 3 presents a fascinating 3D framework with paddle-wheel units, which exhibits a 2-nodal (3,10)-connected 3,10-T9 net with (418·624·83)(43)2 topology. Isostructural compounds 4 and 5 exhibit a (3,6)-connected kgd net with (43)2(46·66·83) topology. Isomorphous 6–9 feature a 3D (3,10)-connected 3,10-T9 net with (418·624·83)(43)2 topology. The structural diversity adequately demonstrate the abundant coordination chemistry of carboxylate terpyridine derivatives and the coordination geometries of LnIII ions, as well as the effects of introducing auxiliary ligands. Moreover, detailed discussion toward the photoluminescence and thermal stabilities of 1–9 were also conducted.

Abstract:Tetranuclear lanthanide-hydroxo complexes of the general formula [Ln(4 mu (3)-OH)(4)(AA)(x)(H2O)(y)](8+) (1, Ln = Sm, AA = Gly, x = 5, y = 11; 2, Ln = Nd, AA = Ala, x = 6, y = 10; 3, Ln = Er, AA = Val, x = 5, y = 10) have been prepared by a-amino acid controlled hydrolysis of lanthanide ions under near physiological pH conditions (pH 6-7). The core component of these compounds is a cationic cluster [Ln(4)(mu (3)-OH)(4)](8+) whose constituent lanthanide ions and triply bridging hydroxo groups occupy the alternate vertexes of a distorted cube. The amino acid ligands coordinate the lanthanide ions via bridging carboxylate groups. Utilizing L-glutamic acid as the supporting ligand, a cationic cluster complex (4) formulated as [Er-4(mu (3)-OH)(4)(Glu)(3)(H2O)(8)](5+) has been obtained. Its extended solid-state structure is composed of the cubane-like [Er-4(mu (3)-OH)(4)](8+) cluster building units interlinked by the carboxylate groups of the glutamate ligands. All compounds are characterized by using a combination of spectroscopic techniques and microanalysis (CHN and metal). Infrared spectra of the complexes suggest the coordinated amino acids to be zwitterionic. The presence of mass (MALDI-TOF) envelopes corresponding to the [Ln(4)(mu (3)-OH)(4)](8+) (Ln = trivalent Sm, Nd, or Er) core containing fragments manifests the integrity of the cubane-like cluster unit. Magnetic studies using Evans' method suggest that exchange interactions between the lanthanide ions are insignificant at ambient temperature. The structural identities of all four compounds have been established crystallographically. The tetranuclear cluster core has been demonstrated to be a common structural motif in these complexes. A mechanism responsible for its self-assembly is postulated.
Probing the Difference in the Complexation of Trivalent Actinides and Lanthanides with a Tridentate N,O-Hybrid Ligand: Spectroscopy, Thermodynamics, and Coordination Modes

Abstract:Comparatively revealing the complexation behavior of trivalent actinides and lanthanides with functional ligands in aqueous solution is of great importance to enrich our knowledge on the fundamental coordination chemistry of trivalent f-block elements and to control the fate of minor actinides in nuclear fuel cycles. In this work, the complexation of Am(III) and Nd(III), representatives for trivalent actinides and lanthanides, respectively, with a N,O-hybrid ligand 6-(dimethylcarbamoyl)picolinic acid (DMAPA, denoted as HL) was investigated by absorption spectroscopy, calorimetry, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Successive formation of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 (metal/ligand) complexes of Am(III) and Nd(III) with DMAPA was identified, and the corresponding thermodynamic parameters were determined. The binding strength of Am(III) with DMAPA is slightly stronger than that of Nd(III), and the complexation of Nd(III) with DMAPA is mainly entropy-driven. The crystal structure of the 1:2 Nd(III)/DMAPA complex and the DFT calculation shed additional light on the coordination and structural characteristics of the complexes. Abstract:(1)H NMR evidence for direct coordination between the Ln(III) ion and the oxygen atoms of the pentaethylene glycol (EO5) ligand and the picrate anion (Pic) in [Ln(Pic)(2)(EO5)][Pic] {Ln=Ce and Nd} complexes are confirmed by single X-ray diffraction. No dissociation of Ln-O bonds in dimethyl sulfoxide-d solution was observed in NMR studies conducted at different temperatures ranging 25-100 degrees C. The Ln(III) ion was chelated to nine oxygen atoms from the EO5 ligand in a hexadentate manner and the two Pic anions in each bidentate and monodentate modes. Both compounds are isostructural and crystallized in monoclinic with space group P2(1)/c. Coordination environment around the Ce1 and Nd1 atoms can be described as tricapped trigonal prismatic and monocapped square antiprismatic geometries, respectively. The crystal packing of the complexes have stabilized by one dimensional (1D) chains along the [001] direction to form intermolecular O-Hcdots, three dots, centeredO and C-Hcdots, three dots, centeredO hydrogen bonding. The molar conductance of the complexes in DMSO solution indicated that both compounds are ionic. The complexes had a good thermal stability. Under the UV-excitation, these complexes exhibited the red-shift emission.

Abstract:Assembly reactions of 5-(isonicotinamido) isophthalic acid (H(2)INAIP) with Ln(2)O(3) or Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O together with NaOH in the presence of AgNO3 result in formation of two series of new 4d-4f heterometallic coordination polymers {[LnAg(INAIP)(2)]center dot 3H(2)O}(n)[Ln = Nd (1), Sm (2), Eu (3), Gd (4), Tb (5)] and {[LnAg(INAIP)(2)(H2O)]center dot xH(2)O}(n) [Ln = La (6), Pr (7), Nd (8), x = 0; Dy (9), Er (10), x = 1]. The results of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that 1-5 are isomorphous and have 2-fold interpenetrated 3D structure with 3-nodal net Point (Schlafli) symbol for net: (4.6(2))(4)(4(4).6(6).8(15).10(3)), while 6-10 are isostructural with similar non-interpenetrating 3D frameworks containing 2D lanthanide-carboxylate bilayers. The results indicate that the reaction conditions have great influence on the structure of the resulting complexes in this system. Furthermore, 3 and 5 show intense red and green fluorescent emissions, respectively, and the emission bands of Nd(III) were observed in the near IR region for 1. The magnetic properties of 1-5, 9 and 10 were investigated.
Nature of the LnIII–CoII Magnetic Interactions in Compounds [ln2co3(c5h4npo3)6] · 4H2O with Open-Framework Structures

Abstract:The reactions of Ln(NO3)(3) center dot xH(2)O, CoSO4 center dot 7H(2)O or ZnSO4 center dot 6H(2)O and 2-pyridylphosphonic acid under hydrothermal conditions result in heterometallic phosphonate compounds with formula [Ln(2)M(3)(C5H4NPO3)(6)] center dot 4H(2)O (Ln(2)M(3); M= Co-II or Zn-II; Ln = La-III, Ce-III, Pr-III, Nd-III, Sm-III, Eu-III, Gd-III, Tb-III, Dy-III). These compounds are isostructural and crystallize in a chiral cubic space group I2(1)3. Each structure contains the {LnO(9)} polyhedra and {MN2O4} octahedra which are connected by edge-sharing to form an inorganic open-framework structure with a 3-connected 10-gon (10, 3) topology. The nature of Ln(III)-Co-II magnetic interactions in Ln(2)Co(3) is investigated by a comparison with their Ln(III)-Zn-II analogues. It is found that the Ln(III)-Co-II interaction is weak antiferromagnetic for Ln = Ce and ferromagnetic for Ln = Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy. Abstract:Four new lanthanide carboxylate complexes have been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that all the complexes form 1-D molecular structures. Especially, complexes 1 and 2 have seven-coordinated centers; in the structures of the isomorphous complexes 3 and 4, there exist three types of 6-OHnicH ligands: a bridging Onic2− anion, a chelating HOnic− anion and a neutral H2Onic molecule.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide–transition metal (Ln–M) complexes, namely, {[Ln2Cu(pydc)4(H2O)3]·H2O} n (Ln = Tb, Eu, Sm or Gd) (H2pydc = 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) have been synthesized hydrothermally by self-assembly of the lanthanide ions, copper(II) ions and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid. All the complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods; in addition, structural analyses revealed that all four complexes crystallized in monoclinic space group P21 /c. The molecular structure contains both Cu and Ln atoms, with pydc ligands bridging the four coordinate Cu(II) centers and eight coordinate lanthanide centers to form a 3-D net structure. Hence, copper is oxidized from Cu(I) to Cu(II) during the preparation. In addition, the thermogravimetric analysis of 1 is discussed. Contrary to expectations, compounds 1–3 show no photoluminescent properties.

Abstract:Novel coordination structures formed by cobalt(II) and strontium(II) complexes with nicotinamide (na), isonicotinamide (ina) and picolinamide (pa) are reported. The structures of these complexes (CoCl2·(C6H6N2O)2·6H2O (Co-na), CoCl2·(C6H6N2O)2 (Co-ina), CoCl2·(C6H6N2O)2·2H2O, (Co-pa), SrCl2·(C6H6N2O)2·4H2O (Sr-na), SrCl2·(C6H6N2O)2·3H2O (Sr-ina) and SrCl2·C6H6N2O·H2O (Sr-pa)) in the solid state have been characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, FTIR, FIR, THz, Raman and UV–Vis spectroscopies. Pyridyl nitrogen of nicotinamide is coordinated to Co2+, but pyridyl nitrogen and carbonyl oxygen are used for coordination to Sr2+, and each Sr2+ is coordinated to four ligands. For isonicotinamide, pyridyl nitrogen is coordinated to Co2+, carbonyl oxygen is coordinated to Sr2+ and the ligand is also hydrogen-bonded in Sr-ina. Pyridyl nitrogen and carbonyl oxygen of picolinamide are coordinated to Co2+ to form a five-membered ring structure, but the carbonyl oxygen is coordinated to two Sr2+ ions in Sr-pa. Some of the complexes can form chain or network structures. The experiments results indicate the differences of the coordination of Co and Sr ions, the changes of hydrogen bonds and conformation of the ligands induced by complexation.
Coordination Polymers Based on Inorganic Lanthanide(III) Sulfate Skeletons and an Organic Isonicotinate N-oxide Connector: Segregation into Three Structural Types by the Lanthanide Contraction Effect

Abstract:Fourteen three-dimensional coordination polymers of general formula [Ln(lNO)(H2O)(SO4)]n, where Ln = La, 1.La; Ce, 2.Ce; Pr, 3.Pr; Nd, 4.Nd; Sm, 5.Sm; Eu, 6.Eu; Gd, 7.Gd; Tb, 8.Tb; Dy, 9.Dy; Ho, 10.Ho; Er. 11.Er; Tm, 12.Tm; Yb, 13.Yb; and Lu, 14.Lu; INO = isonicotinate-N-oxide, have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions of Ln3+, MnCO3, MnSO4 x H2O, and isonicotinic acid N-oxide (HINO) at 155 degrees C and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, thermal analysis, luminescence spectroscopy, and the magnetic measurement. The structures are formed by connection of layer, chain, or dimer of Ln-SO4 by the organic connector, INO. They belong to three structural types that are governed exclusively by the size of the ions: type I for the large ions, La, Ce, and Pr; type II for the medium ions, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Tb; and type III for the small ions, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu. Type I consists of two-dimensional undulate Ln-sulfate layers pillared by INO to form a three-dimensional network. Type II has a 2-fold interpenetration of "3D herringbone" networks, in which the catenation is sustained by extensive pi-pi interactions and O-H...O and C-H...O hydrogen bonds. Type III comprises one-dimensional chains that are connected by INO bridges, resulting in an alpha-Po network. The progressive structural change is due to the metal coordination number decreasing from nine for the large ions via eight to seven for the small ions, demonstrating clearly the effect of lanthanide contraction. The sulfate ion acts as a micro4- or micro3-bridge, connecting two, three, or four metals, and is both mono- and bidentate. The INO ligand acts as a micro3- or micro2-bridge with carboxylate group in syn-syn bridging or bidentate chelating mode. The materials show considerably high thermal stability. The magnetic properties of 4.Nd, 6.Eu, 7.Gd, and 13.Yb and the luminescence properties of 6.Eu and 8.Tb are also investigated.
