Abstract:Hierarchical porous ZnO microspheres decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal route. The hierarchical ZnO superstructure was constructed of interconnected nanoplates with numerous voids. Photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements demonstrated that the main defects were oxygen vacancies (V(O)(•)) with minor interstitial oxygen (O(i)(-)) in the hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres. The as-prepared hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres and the AuNPs used to decorate them were examined for their photocatalytic degradation ability and as gas sensors. The photodegradation results demonstrated that the degradation rate constant on rhodamine B for undecorated ZnO microspheres was 0.43 min(-1), which increased to 1.76 min(-1) for AuNP-decorated ZnO microspheres. The AuNP-functionalized ZnO microspheres displayed superior sensing properties, with a 3-fold enhancement in their gas response to 1 ppb of dibutyl phthalate.

Abstract:Novel Zn-doped SnO(2)hierarchical architectures were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route. The observation of field-emission electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that Zn-doped SnO2 hierarchical architectures were composed of one-dimensional nanocones. Interestingly, these nanocones were almost parallel to each other and knitted by other parallel nanocones. The morphology of the products could be controlled by varying the concentration of Zn2+. A possible formation mechanism was proposed from the viewpoint of nucleation and the crystal growth habit. Evidences of dopant incorporation were demonstrated in the X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement of Zn-doped SnO(2)nanocones. The UV-vis absorption spectra of samples exhibited a blue shift with a decrease of the size of nanocones. Moreover, gas sensors based on the hierarchical Zn-doped SnO(2)nanocones displayed higher response to ethanol compared with the pure urchin-like SnO2 nanostructures. Finally, based on first-principles calculations, the enhancement in sensitivity toward ethanol could be explained by the strong coulomb binding between Zn-Sn and its neighboring O vacancies.

Abstract:A one-step hydrothermal route was used to synthesize undoped and Zn-doped SnO2 hierarchical architectures. The morphologies and structures of the as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results clearly revealed that the as-prepared SnO2 hierarchical architectures were composed of many 2 dimensional (2D) nanosheets with the thickness of about 30nm. The gas sensing properties of the as-prepared undoped and Zn-doped SnO2 samples were tested toward various gases. The sensor based on S3 (Zn2+/Sn4+=0.056) showed excellent selectivity toward ethanol at the operating temperature 213°C, giving a response of about 14.4 to 100ppm, which was about 3.2 times higher than that of sensor based on pure SnO2.

Abstract:A facile one-pot solution combustion approach has been adopted to synthesize Sn4+ doped ZnO carbon nanosheets (SZC) which utilized for detection of glycol vapor. The characterization results indicate that the morphology of ZnO depends on the Sn2+ addition and changes from nanoparticle to nanorod and nanoblock. The sensor based on SZC material with the Sn4+ dopant of 3.24 wt% exhibits the highest response (434.41) toward 100 ppm glycol at 260 °C, excellent repeatability and selectivity.

Abstract:A low-cost and environmentally friendly hydrothermal route to the synthesis of hierarchical SnO2 nanostructures was described. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared product were characterized by various characterization techniques. The results revealed that these nanostructures were built from two-dimensional (2 D) nanosheets with the thicknesses of about 8 nm. Moreover, the amount of hydrochloric acid played a crucial role in the control of the final size and morphology of product. Gas sensors based on hierarchical SnO2 nanostructures were fabricated, and their gas sensing properties were tested for response to ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde, CO, toluene, H2 and H2S gases. The sensor showed excellent selectivity toward ethanol. At an ethanol concentration of 100 ppm, the response of the hierarchical SnO2 nanosheets was about 33, which was about 2.5 times higher than that of the nanoparticles. The response time of the sensor to 60 ppm ethanol was shorter than 11 s at the optimal operating temperature of 275 °C. The enhancement in gas sensing properties was attributed to their unique structures.

Abstract:The hierarchical undoped and Cd-doped SnO2 nanostructures had been synthesized via a low-cost and environmentally friendly hydrothermal route. The morphology and structure of the as-prepared product were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The images of field-emission electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that pure and Cd-doped SnO2 hierarchical architectures were built from one-dimensional nanorods. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the doped samples revealed that Cd incorporation led to lattice deformation without destroying the original crystal structure. Gas sensors based on undoped and Cd-doped SnO2 nanorods were fabricated, and their gas sensing properties were tested for various gases. The 3.0wt% Cd-doped SnO2 based sensor showed excellent selectivity toward H2S at the operating temperature 275°C, giving a response of about 31–10ppm, which was about 22 times higher than that of sensor based on pure SnO2.

Abstract:ZnO/SnO2 hierarchical nanostructures were synthesized by the electrospinning method and hydrothermal technique.The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that ZnO nanorods arrays with the diameter 20~30 nm were grown uniformly on the surface of SnO2 nanofibers whose lengths were 2~10 μm.Compared with pure ZnO and SnO2 nanowires,the ZnO/SnO2 hierarchical nanostructures showed an obvious improvement in gas sensing performance.The response to 100×10-6(volume fraction)acetone of the sensor based on ZnO/ SnO2 hierarchical nanostructures was as high as 22.76 at 300 ℃,the response time and recovery time was 13 s and 10 s respectively.

Abstract:By using porous ZnO nanosheets, obtained from a rapid one-step polyol refluxing method, as the active material, we reported the fabrication of high performance photodetectors, photocatalysts, and gas sensors. The as fabricated photodetectors exhibited the features of high photocurrent, enhanced stability, and reproducible characteristics with the photo-to-dark current ratio as high as 1.6 x 10(3). The photocatalytic properties were also investigated by the photo-degradation of methylene blue under UV light irradiation. The as-synthesized porous ZnO nanosheets were able to decompose methylene blue within 20 min, which is more than twice as fast as that of ZnO nanoparticles and nanospheres. Finally, the gas sensing performance of the porous ZnO nanosheets for detecting ethanol was investigated, also revealing greater enhanced performance compared with other ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:The unique flowerlike SnO2 hollow nanosheets with multilayer walls have been successfully synthesized by a simple anneal-etching strategy based on flowerlike ZnSn(OH)(6) solid nanosheets. FESEM and TEM observations reveal that this new type of nonspherical SnO2 hollow structure is composed of hexagonal hollow nanosheets with mesoporous and multilayered interiors, where the secondary building blocks are numerous nanoparticles. Synthetic step-related investigation demonstrates that the formation of flowerlike hollow nanosheets with mesoporous and multilayer walls are ascribed to the final well-preserved shapes of flowerlike ZnSn(OH)6 solid template and the critical hollowing process in the last etching treatment. The well-aligned porous and multilayer walls of SnO2 hollow nanosheets retain actual high surface area and surface accessibility, and the improved gas sensing performances can be anticipated. It is found that our SnO2 nanostructures have a response of 18.3-50 ppm acetone at the optimal working temperature of 300 degrees C, and the response time and recovery time are within 0.9 and 5.8 s, respectively. Abstract:Using a tin-oleate complex as the precursor and the capping agent, we successfully synthesized ultrafine SnO2 nanospike arrays with diameter 6-15 nm and length 150 nm, growing along the [001] direction from a simple hydrothermal route. The as-obtained SnO2 products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis absorption spectrum, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy. As-synthesized SnO2 nanospike arrays exhibited improved gas sensing performance as compared to bulk SnO2 due to the small grain size-distribution and specific surface properties. The detection limits of the sensor were found to be down to 0.5 ppm for acetone, ethanol and 1.0 ppm for methanol with response time as short as 5 s.

It's worth mentioning that the hollowness of these microspheres could be controlled by adjusting the zinc source concentration. Abstract:PdO‐decorated SnO2 nanocomposites with open porous hierarchical architectures are fabricated through a facile biotemplating sol–gel technique. The sol–gel soakage process is carried out by immersing the templates butterfly wings in Sn‐ and Pd‐ impregnants successively to generate a uniform colloid layer. PdO and SnO2 nanocrystallites come into being with subsequent calcination treatment, and PdO‐decorated SnO2 nanocomposites further construct the parallel main ridges with connective pillars and vertical struts, finally present a 3‐D open porous hierarchical architecture. Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) SnO hierarchical architectures were synthesized via a one-step dissolution-precipitation route under room temperature using SnCl2 . 2H(2)O and Na2CO3 as the initial reagents. The morphology and size of the prepared SnO structures could be easily tailored by alternating the solvent from deionized water with absolute ethanol. The SEM observation showed that the prepared 3D SnO hierarchical architectures consisted of nanosheets. The size of the SnO hierarchical architectures could be effectively reduced from 4-10 mu m to 1-2 mu m when the solvent was changed from water to ethanol while the thickness of the assembling nanosheets was reduced from 200-500 nm to 20-30 nm at the same time. The possible formation mechanism of the 3D SnO hierarchical architectures is proposed in this paper. The photodegradation of methylene blue revealed that the SnO hierarchical structures prepared using ethanol as the solvent exhibit much better photocatalytic activity due to its smaller particle size, larger specific surface area, and appropriate band structure as well.
Synthesis of ZnO nanosheets @In2O3 hollow micro-rods heterostructures for enhanced ethanol gas sensing performance

Abstract:In this paper, the ZnO nanosheets @In2O3 hollow microrods heterostructures were successfully prepared by co-precipitation and annealing methods. It was observed by SEM and TEM that the surface of the In2O3 hollow microrods was uniformly coated with porous ZnO nanosheets, which increased the specific surface area of ZnO@In2O3 composites. The In2O3 hollow microrods functions as electron transport channels and facilitate the transfer of electrons between ZnO nanosheets, consequently elevating the base resistance of sensors. The maximum sensor response of ZnO@In2O3-2 (the molar ratio of ZnO and In2O3 is 5:2) was 269.1 for 100 ppm ethanol at the optimal working temperature of 200 ºC, which is about 30.9 times higher than that of pure ZnO nanosheets (8.7) and 19.1 times higher than that of pure In2O3 (14.1). Additionally, the ZnO@In2O3-2 composites exhibit rapid response-recovery times, excellent selectivity and favorable stability. The improved gas sensing performance of ZnO@In2O3-2 heterostructures were ascribed to its heterogeneous structure building, abundant oxygen vacancies, large specific surface area and internal electric field through characterized by XPS, EPR, and BET.

Abstract:Flower-like hierarchical structures consisting of porous single-crystalline ZnO nanosheets (FHPSCZNs) were synthesized by a one-pot wet-chemical method followed by an annealing treatment, which combined the advantages between flower-like hierarchical structure and porous single-crystalline structure. XRD, SEM and HRTEM were used to characterize the synthesized FHPSCZN samples. The sensing properties of the FHPSCZN sensor were also investigated by comparing with ZnO powder sensor, which exhibited higher response and shorter response and recovery times. Abstract:A novel hollow hierarchical nano-heterostructure consisting of ZnO nanorods coated with In2O3 nanoparticles was prepared using a hydrothermal method combined with an annealing treatment via carbon fiber (CF) templates. Experimental results reveal that the In2O3/ZnO hierarchical composite has a tubular structure with an average diameter of ∼6μm and In2O3 nanoparticles distribute uniformly on the ZnO nanorods. Significantly, the obtained heterostructure shows enhanced visible light photoactivity to methyl orange (MO) degradation and good selectivity and response toward ethanol even at a low detection limit (1ppm). This outstanding performance is a result of the one-dimensional tubular structure and the heterostructure formation between In2O3 and ZnO, advantageous for the adsorption and diffusion and the separation of electrons and holes. In addition, the excellent performance is greatly improved by virtue of the evenly decorated In2O3 nanoparticles on the ZnO nanorod surfaces, which provide more active sites for pollutants and gases.

Abstract:ZnO/TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures were synthesized by using the electrospinning method and hydrothermal technique.The morphology and crystal structure of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively.The gas sensing properties of the samples were also investigated.The results showed that cone-like ZnO nanorods arrays were grown uniformly on the surface of TiO2 nanofibers, and eventually synthesized ZnO/TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures.Moreover, the hydrothermal growth process of cone-like ZnO nanorod arrays did not change the crystal structure of TiO2 nanofibers.The sensor based on ZnO/TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures had high sensitivity and good selectivity to acetone.

Abstract:Multidimensional nanostructures (0D–1D composite nanostructure) SnO2 nanoparticles in SnO2 nanotubes were easily synthesized by combining the co-precipitation method with the coaxial electrospinning method. SnO2 nanoparticles with a size of about 30 nm were synthesized by co-precipitation method, and SnO2 nanoparticles in SnO2 nanotubes were synthesized by coaxial electrospinning by using a dispersion of SnO2 nanoparticles as the inner precursor. Such 0D–1D SnO2 nanostructures have advantages of the enhanced gas sensing performances due to the improved specific surface area and gas accessibility. The multidimensional nanostructures SnO2 nanoparticles in SnO2 nanotubes exhibit an enhanced gas sensing performances in comparison to 0D SnO2 nanoparticles and 1D SnO2 nanotubes.

Abstract:A novel hierarchical porous biomorphic ZnO/SnO was facilely synthesized in one step using bagasse as a bio-template. The structural features of the ZnO/SnO2 n–n heterostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that the as-prepared ZnO/SnO2 retained the original pore morphology of the bagasse material, and the ZnO/SnO2 was demonstrated with higher sensing performance as compared with the pure SnO2. Particularly, when the molar ratio of SnO2:ZnO = 1:1, the sensor displayed the highest response, showing an excellent response value of 37 under 100 ppm methanol at 340 °C. Meanwhile, the ZnO/SnO2 composite exhibited good gas selectivity and stability to methanol, which could mainly be attributed to the formation of n-n junctions between SnO2 and ZnO and the high capability of absorbed oxygen species of the ZnO/SnO2 composite.
