Abstract:The Ce x Gd1− x F3:Ln3+ (x = 0, 0.5 and 1, Ln3+ = Tb3+, Dy3+ and Eu3+) colloidal nanocrystals have been synthesised by the hydrothermal procedure. The Ce0.5Gd0.5F3:Tb3+ nanocrystals consisted of a well-crystallised hexagonal CeF3 phase and formed a (Ce, Gd)F3:Tb3+ solid solution. The nanocrystals have a near-spherical shape with diameters between 30 and 60 nm. The excitation and emission spectra of the Ce x Gd1− x F3:Ln3+ nanocrystals confirmed that the procedure of energy transfer from Ce3+ ions via Gd3+ lattices to Ln3+ ions was more efficient than that of direct energy transfer from Ce3+ ions to Ln3+ ions. The colloidal solutions of Ce0.5Gd0.5F3:Tb3+ and CeF3:Tb3+ nanocrystals showed intense green luminescence upon short wavelength ultraviolet irradiation.

Abstract:Eu3+ doped NaGdF4 crystals were synthesized by hydrothermal methods. The effects of different temperatures and NaF concentration on the crystal structures and luminescence intensities were investigated. The intensity of D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ions was closely related with the amount of GdF3 phase. The reduction of GdF3 phase could substantially enhance the ratio of D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition and D-5(0)-> F-7(1) transition of Eu3+.

Abstract:Synthesis and luminescence properties of GdF3:Ce3+, Ln(3+) (Ln(3+)=Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Sm3+) nanocrystals were investigated. The energy transfer efficiencies between Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions, Dy3+ ions, Eu3+ ions were relatively higher than that between Ce3+ ions and Sm3+ ions. Multicolor emissions could be obtained using 254 nm light as excitation source. Such multicolor emissions could be used as multicolor bio-label.

Abstract:The morphology, size and phase control of luminescent fluoride nanocrystals through doping has become a new research hotspot due to their improved properties. In this work, Yb(3+) ions, as one of the most efficient sensitizers for various lanthanide activators, were doped in NaGd(Y)F(4) nanocrystals. The results show that no obvious influence was observed for Yb(3+)-doped NaYF(4) nanocrystals, while the influence of Yb(3+) doping on NaGdF(4) nanocrystals was remarkable. The NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals were synthesized by a hydrothermal route and had a morphology of rice-like nanorods. By controlling the synthesis parameters, the average size and slenderness of the nanocrystals increased gradually with addition of Yb(3+) ions. In contrast, the NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals maintained a hexagonal phase, which is more beneficial for application as a luminescent host, until the content of Yb(3+) ions reached x = 0.9. The growth and transformation mechanism of NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals was proposed to be a result of the competition between ion diffusion and an Oswald ripening process. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra confirm the efficient up-conversion and near-infrared (NIR) two-model luminescence properties of Er(3+) (Tm(3+)) activated NaGd(Y)(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals. Simulated analysis results indicate that a colloidal solution of mixed luminescent nanocrystals is expected to find application as the activated medium of three dimensional displays and a broadband optical amplifier.

Abstract:Monodisperse, regular-shaped and well-crystallized nanocrystals (NCs) of lanthanide-doped NaGdF4 with diverse shapes and structures are synthesized in high boiling organic solvents 1-octadecene and oleic acid, through a competitive nucleation and growth pathway. The NCs can be manipulated to different morphologies and phase structures by using controlled variations in the reaction conditions such as composition of the solvent, temperature or reaction time. The NCs are thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), high resolution TEM (HRTEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), IR spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. Possible mechanisms of NC nucleation and growth, size and shape evolution are proposed and tested. With different dopants, the NCs can show intensive multicolor down-conversion emissions under 254 nm UV excitation or up-conversion fluorescence under 980 nm NIR excitation, showing great promise in applications such as multi-analyte biolabels, staining, displays and other optical technologies.

Abstract:Systematic synthesis of scheelite-type double molybdate nano-/microcrystals NaLn (MoO4)(2) (Ln = La-Lu lanthanides and Y) was successfully carried out via hydrothermal reaction at 180 degrees C without using any organic additive, and the intrinsic effects of lanthanide contraction on phase preference and crystallite morphology were unambiguously observed. It was shown that the products of larger Ln(3+) (Ln = La-Dy) and smaller Ln(3+) (Ln = Ho-Lu and Y) elements crystallized as tetragonal NaLn (MoO4)(2) and new orthorhombic NaLnMo(2)O(8)center dot 2H(2)O structures, respectively, with the latter being able to dehydrate to tetragonal NaLn (MoO4)(2) upon calcination at similar to 300 degrees C. Y was found to be a demarcation point for the two structures, and phase preference was shown to be influenced by solution pH and MoO42-/Y3+ molar ratio. With Eu3+ as a downconversion (DC) luminescence probe, the effects of Ln type (Ln = La, Gd, Y and Lu) and crystal structure were manifested. Furthermore, the upconversion (UC) luminescence of Yb3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ pairs in NaLu(MoO4)(2) was studied for the first time, and strong red and green UC emissions were observed under the 978 nm laser excitation. Abstract:Water-soluble lanthanide-doped LaF3 nanocrystals were synthesized using a simple method carried out in aqueous solution at low temperature. The nanocrystals have a nearly spherical shape and an average size of below 30 nm. They consisted of well crystallized hexagonal phases. The luminescence quantum efficiency was about 16% in aqueous solution. LaF3 nanocrystals doped with different lanthanide ions (Eu3+, Ce3+, Tb3+, and Nd3+) were synthesized, which showed strong luminescence in the visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions.

Abstract:Europium-doped LaF3 nanoparticles have been prepared by the ionic reaction in the ethanol at 60°C. From the XRD pattern of nanoparticles and the emission spectra of Eu3+ ions, it has been concluded that the Eu3+ ions could easily substitute the La3+ sites and the solid solution La1−xEuxF3 can be synthesized. Due to very low phonon energies of LaF3 matrix, the 5D1 emission of Eu3+ ions in La1−xEuxF3 nanoparticles can be observed at room temperature when doping concentration of Eu3+ ions is lower than 30mol%. The quenching process of 5D1 emission can be attributed to cross-relaxation. Since clusters of Eu3+ ions and resonance energy transfer only occurs within one particle due to the hindrance by the particle boundary, the concentration quenching resulted from resonance energy transfer between neighboring Eu3+ ions occurs at higher Eu3+ concentrations in the Eu3+ doped LaF3 nanoparticles.

Abstract:The capability to selectively obtain expected nanocrystals from a series of possibilities with similar chemical compositions has been a long-term challenge. beta-LaF3 and beta-NaLaF4 nanocrystals are a kind of host material with excellent physical and chemical stability as well as low phonon energy. Since beta-NaLaF4 nanocrystals are difficult to form due to the very strong La3+-F- ionic bond, investigations of the doping effect of different lanthanide ions on the formation of the final product were carried out. The experimental results have indicated that Ce3+ and Pr3+ doping has no obvious effect on the product compared to pure beta-LaF3 nanocrystals without doping, and doping of Nd3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, and Tb3+ leads to the formation of pure beta-NaLaF4 nanocrystals while doping of Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+, Yb3+, and Lu3+ only results in a mixture of both. What is more, proper lanthanide ion doping can also help in obtaining enhanced up- and downconversion luminescence. A theoretical model from the nanocrystal growth free energy point of view has been developed to explain the above phenomenon.

Abstract:Nd3+-doped LaF3 nanocrystals with different morphologies have been produced via solvothermal method at various pH values (1-6). Their morphologies and optical properties were characterized by TEM, fluorescence spectra and decay curves. A possible formation mechanism including burst-nucleation and growth process was proposed. The results reveal that when the pH increases from 1 to 2 to 4-6, the nanocrystals' mean size reduces slightly and the morphologies transform from the hollow sphere to the packed hexagon. The fluorescence lifetime and quantum efficiency achieved maximum for the samples synthesized at pH = 2. These nanocrystals with small size (<30 nm) and bright photoluminescence are promising phosphors in the applications of biological, optical amplifiers and liquid laser fields. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The series of luminescent NaYF4:Sm3+ nano- and microcrystalline materials co-doped by La3+, Gd3+, and Lu3+ ions were synthesized by hydrothermal method using rare earth chlorides as the precursors and citric acid as a stabilizing agent. The phase composition of synthesized compounds was studied by PXRD. All synthesized materials except ones with high La3+ content (where LaF3 is formed) have a β-NaYF4 crystalline phase. SEM images demonstrate that all particles have shape of hexagonal prisms. The type and content of doping REE significantly effect on the particle size. Upon 400 nm excitation, phosphors exhibit distinct emission peaks in visible part of the spectrum attributed to 4G5/2→6HJ transitions (J = 5/2–11/2) of Sm3+ ion. Increasing the samarium (III) content results in concentration quenching by dipole–dipole interactions, the optimum Sm3+concentration is found to be of 2%. Co-doping by non-luminescent La3+, Gd3+ and Lu3+ ions leads to an increase in emission intensity. This effect was explained from the Sm3+ local symmetry point of view.

Abstract:By using different surfactants, several host morphologies including rod-like, pot-like and shuttle-like of LaF3:Nd3+(1% mol) nanoparticles were prepared by a simple microemulsion hydrothermal method, and their properties were characterised by XRD, TEM and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The experimental results indicated that the rod-like and pot-like nanocrystals possess well shaped hollow structures. The analysis of spectra proved that the local environment around the dopant ion changed with the different host morphology, which in turn influenced the luminescence properties. The luminescence lifetimes derived from biexponential fitting were 615 micros (nanopots), 419 micros (nanorods) and 194 micros (nanoshuttles), respectively. This phenomenon is ascribed to the weakening effect of hollow or fenestral structures to the nonradiative ratio.

Abstract:NaGdF4 is one of the most commonly employed phosphor host matrices for lanthanide doping and is one of the most efficient infrared-to-visible up-conversion fluorescent host materials. Although the structure, morphology and luminescence properties of NaREF4 have been sufficiently investigated, there are very few reported instances of introducing localized order/crystallinity by electron-beam (e-beam) irradiation. In this work, we studied the phase transformation of Gd2O3 from an amorphous to crystalline form via manipulation by e-beam irradiation. The amorphous Gd2O3 occurs as an impurity in the cubic-NaGdF4 nanoparticles (NPs). The structural evolutions, including the transformation from amorphous to crystalline, the recrystallization process and the formation of the graphene@NP core-shell structure, are discussed in detail. We also propose an evolution scheme, in which the e-beam manipulation of the organic-containing NPs induces a subtle structural transformation, depending in principle on the microenvironment of the NPs.

Abstract:One dimensional Eu:La1-xGdxVO4 nanofibers were successfully prepared via an electrospinning method. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimeter (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence were used to characterize the samples. The nanofibers crystallized well below 600 degrees C and with the increase of Gd contents, the nanofibers crystallized in a zircon-type structure. The Raman spectra shifted to higher frequency with the increase of Gd content for zircon Eu:La1-xGdxVO4. The peaks of photoluminescence spectra shift towards longer wavelength when Gd replaces La and when x = 0.4, the photoluminescence intensity reaches its maximum value. The band structure and density of states of m-LaVO4, t-LaVO4, t-LaGdVO4 and t-GdVO4 were calculated by local-spin density approximation (LSDA) band theory with Hubbard term of U. The band gap of t-LaGdVO4 is just the average of t-LaVO4 and t-GdVO4. In t-LaGdVO4, La 5p states are highly localized.
Enhanced Photoluminescense of Gd2O3∶ Sm3+ Nanocrystals by Li+ Doping

Abstract:The luminescence properties of nanosized lanthanide oxide materials have attracted extensive inte- rest because of their fundamental and technological importance.Gd_2O_3,which is easily obtained due to abun- dant resource in nature,has been widely used as host material.The emission efficiency of Sm~(3+) associated with the intra-4f-shell transition is very high,and it earl emit bright light under both ultraviolet and infrared excitation.Therefore,it often plays a very important role in many luminescent materials.In this paper, Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) and Li~+-doped Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) nanocrystals were prepared by a combustion method.The pure nanocrystals were obtained after annealing at 800℃,and the crystallinity was improved with increasing annea- ling temperature.Both Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) and Li~+-doped Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) nanocrystals appeared to be cubic crystal- line phase according to the XRD results.In contrast to Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) which showed an irregular shape of ag- glomerated fine particles,the morphology of Li~+-doped Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) nanocrystals were spherical and quite regular.These particles were measured to be about 50 nm in diameter.When excited at 275 nm and 980 nm, Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) and Li~+-doped Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) nanocrystals exhibit similar emission spectra,which consist of the characteristic emission bands of the Sm~(3+) ions (~4G_(5/2)→~6H_J,J=5/2,7/2,9/2 transitions at 560,602,650 nm in the spectra) due to an efficient energy transfer from the Gd_2O_3 host lattice to the doped Sm~(3+) ions.It was found that the incorporation of Li~+ into the Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) nanocrystals has greatly enhanced the photolumi- nescence intensity of Sm~(3+) in both photoluminescence and upconversion emission.The highest emission inten- sity was observed with Gd_(1.83)Li_(0.15)Sm_(0.02)O_3,whose brightness was increased by a factor about 7.0 in compari- son with that of Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+).As we all known that defects of the surface of the nanoparticles,which provide non-radiation recombination routes for electrons and holes,often act as non-radiative centers and has great in- fluence on luminescent properties.It can be suggested that the incorporation of Li~+ can greatly decrease the deficiencies and oxygen vacancies.That is,the defects and oxygen vacancies of the surface of nanoparticles decreased at first when Li~+ content was lower,which decreased the luminescence quenching centers and in- creased the crystallinity,thereby enhanced the emission intensity.A lot of defects could be induced in the sys- tem with a gradual increase of Li~+ content.This will destroy the crystallinity and thus lead to the luminescence quenching.In conclusion,this paper reported the correlation between the morphology,structure and optical behaviors on Gd_2O_3:Sm~(3+) nanocrystals doped with Li~+ Li~+ doping at a low content significantly improved the morphology of phosphors and strongly enhanced the luminescent properties.

Abstract:In this study, monodispersed and high-quality hexagonal phase LaF3 nanocrystals with different shapes and sizes were synthesized by a solvothermal method using oleic acid as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared LaF3 nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and analysis of the upconversion spectra. The TEM results reveal that the samples present high uniformity and monodispersity and are self-assembled into a two-dimensional ordered array. Moreover, the shape, size and structure of the nanocrystals can be readily tuned by adjusting the NaF content. With increasing content of NaF, the shape of the LaF3 nanocrystals changed from particle to rod and the size gradually increased. More importantly, high NaF content favors the formation of one-dimensional nanorods. High Y b(3+) and Er(3+) content is beneficial to synthesizing the hexagonal phase of NaLaF4 nanocrystals. Furthermore, the TEM results show that the shape and size of the LaF3 nanocrystals can also be tuned by doping lanthanide ions, which provides a new route for size and shape control of nanocrystals. In addition, LaF3 nanocrystals co-doped with Y b(3+)/Tm(3+) present efficient near-infrared (NIR)-NIR upconversion luminescence. More importantly, the upconversion luminescent colors can be readily tuned from blue-white to blue by adjusting the excitation power. Therefore, it is expected that these LaF3 nanocrystals with well-controlled shape, size and NIR-NIR upconversion emission have potential applications in biomedical imaging fields.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase (β) sodium rare earth tetrafluorides (NaREF4, RE = Y, Gd, Lu, et al.) are considered the ideal matrices for lanthanide (Ln) ions doped upconversion (UC) luminescence materials, because they can provide favorable crystal lattice structures for the doped luminescent Ln ions to make intensive emissions. However, the cubic phase (α) NaREF4 always preferentially forms at low reaction temperature in short time as it is dynamically stable. Therefore, it is hard to obtain small sized β-NaREF4 via the traditional solvothermal method. In this paper, small sized β-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles were synthesized by a heterogeneous-core-induced method via the solvothermal reaction. The heterogeneous α-NaGdF4/β-NaYF4: Yb, Er core-shell structure was confirmed by the local elemental mapping. The formation mechanism of β-NaYF4:Yb,Er shell on the surface of α-NaGdF4 core was explained in detail. We reasoned that a hetero interface with a lower lattice symmetric structure was produced by cation exchanges between the core and shell, which caused the preferential growth of anisotropic hexagonal phase shell. The existence of this hetero interface has also been proven by observation of Gd3+ UC emission.

Abstract:The influence of Y doping on the crystallization behavior, structure transition and the photoluminescence enhancement of Gd2O3:Eu (Eu3+ doping concentration is kept as 10%) nanocrystals prepared by combustion method was investigated. The as-prepared Gd2O3:Eu was in monoclinic phase. As x increased to 0.14, cubic phase could be observed as well as monoclinic, and heavy Y doping (x>0.40) changed the structure to cubic instead of monoclinic. Though it was prominent that cubic Y2O3:Eu, as the extreme case of Y substitution, had much stronger photoluminescence than monoclinic Gd2O3:Eu in a same Eu3+-doping concentration, it is quite surprising that less Y doping increased the emission of monoclinic Gd2O3:Eu. This effect can be ascribed to the crystal field difference induced by lattice distortion, which is a much more significant behavior for the nanocrystals than the bulk.

Abstract:In this study, gadolinium (Gd) and chromium (Cr) co-doped yttrium iron garnet (Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 ) nanoparticles were prepared by the sol–gel method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, which was further refined by Rietveld analysis, proved the cubic ( Ia-3d ) structure without any secondary phase. Surface morphology and microstructure analysis were investigated utilizing field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). FESEM images show how dopants (both Gd and Cr) particles have dispersed non-uniformly in the Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 matrix and the nanostructured particles with size range from 97 to 284 nm for different Gd and Cr levels. Ferroelectric measurements present a substantial improvement in polarization under a saturated applied field of ± 5 kV/cm for doped, and co-doped Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 . At room temperature magnetic properties are measured by VSM, and it is found that the magnetic properties (saturation and remnant magnetization) are reduced (enhanced) with Gd 3+ (Cr 3+ ) doping substantially. UV–VIS spectrophotometry revealed a significant reduction in optical band gap energy from 2.23 to 1.99 eV due to Gd and Cr co-doping in Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 . The dielectric behavior of Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 is studied in the 100 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range. The frequency-dependent dielectric constant displays the normal dielectric dispersion response, which is explained in terms of polarization concentration using Maxwell–Wagner theory. The dielectric constant is independent of the frequency at longer wavelengths (˃ 10 5 Hz), owing to only ionic and electronic polarizations. The AC conductivity ( σ AC ) complies with the power law, and the linearity of log 2 versus log σ AC plot shows that the conduction mechanism is due to limited polar hopping. The obtained results anticipated that Gd 3+ - and Cr 3+ -doped Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 exhibit improved properties for application compared to pure Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 . The synthesized ceramics may find potential applications in sensors, capacitors, actuators, transducers, and memory devices.
