Achieving Bi-Function of Enhanced CO2 Gas Sensing and Orange-Red Light Emission of La2O2CO3 1D Nanostructures Via Eu3+ Doping

Abstract:Bi-functional nanomaterials with gas sensing and luminescence are more attractive and promising compared with the counterpart single functional nanomaterials, and have become a hotspot subject. Herein, La2O2CO3 and La2O2CO3:Eu3+ one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures including nanofibers, hollow nanofibers and nanobelts are rationally designed and are synthesized by a facile electrospinning via regulating spinning parameters. Excellent bi-functionalities of enhanced CO2 gas sensing and intense orange-red light emission are achieved via Eu3+ doping in 1D La2O2CO3 nanostructures. CO2 sensors based on La2O2CO3:Eu3+ 1D nanostructures display superior selectivity, high response, short response/recovery time and good reproducibility. With respect to response time (2 s) and recovery time (9s), the La2O2CO3:Eu3+ hollow nanofibers sensor is the best of the presently reported La2O2CO3-based CO2 sensors. The enhanced CO2 sensing mechanism of La2O2CO3:Eu3+ 1D nanostructures can be contributed to the lattice distortion and increase of OH- groups due to Eu3+ doping. Meanwhile, La2O2CO3:Eu3+ 1D nanostructures emit bright orange-red light under 274-nm UV light excitation. The luminescent characteristics are easily adjusted by varying the doping concentrations of Eu3+ ions and changing the morphology of 1D nanostructures. Rationally devised and prepared La2O2CO3:Eu3+ 1D nanostructures with different morphologies can better meet the applications in CO2 gas sensing and rare earth luminescence fields. The preparation strategy of 1D nanostructures is established and the formation mechanism is advanced. The design concepts and fabrication methods established in this work can be extended to prepare other 1D nanostructured materials, promoting the developments of 1D bi-functional nanostructures in the fields of gas sensing and luminescence.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO), a wide direct band gap semiconductor, has attracted extensive attention for its potential optoelectronic applications, such as coherent ultraviolet light emitters. Pure one-dimensional ZnO, structures such as nanorods and nanowires, etc. inevitably have some crystal defects, which makes them to emit not only in the ultraviolet region but also in the visible range. Photoluminescent ZnO‑carbon nanocomposites are an emerging class of nanomaterials that has spurred a lot of interests due to its attractive optical properties. It has been shown that these composite structures yield an enhanced ultraviolet to visible emission ratio due to improved surface plasmon emission and a new defect emission mechanism. Hence, a novel one-dimensional structure of ZnO and carbon nanofibers composite material has been designed and prepared. The scaly ZnO is completely coated with carbon nanofibers. This new composite structure has strong ultraviolet emission photoluminescence characteristics in combination with low visible emission.
A neoteric approach to achieve CaF2:Eu2+/3+ one-dimensional nanostructures with direct white light emission and color-tuned photoluminescence

Abstract:CaF2:Eu2+/3+ one-dimensional nanostructures including nanofibers, hollow nanofibers and nanobelts are respectively constructed via a newly-proposed technique of high-efficient combination of electrospinning with bi-crucible fluorinating technique. The diameters of CaF2:Eu2+/3+ nanofibers and hollow nanofibers are respectively 328 ± 2 nm and 290 ± 5 nm, and the width and thickness of nanobelts are 1.07 ± 0.013 μm and 150 nm, respectively. Under the excitation of 276-nm or 320-nm ultraviolet light, CaF2:Eu2+/3+ nanostructures exhibit characteristic emission peaks at 385 nm (purple) and 615 nm (red) assigned to 4f65 d1 (t2g)→8S7/2 energy levels transition of Eu2+ ions and 5D0→7F2 energy levels transitions of Eu3+ ions, respectively. XPS data further confirm the coexistence and proportion of Eu2+ and Eu3+ in the samples. CaF2:9%Eu2+/3+ nanofibers possess the highest luminescent intensity. White-emitting and color-tunable photoluminescence performance of CaF2:Eu2+/3+ nanostructures are realized by regulating the proportion of Eu2+ to Eu3+ ions, and luminescence mechanism is also proposed. Further, it is satisfactorily found that the proportion of Eu2+ to Eu3+ ions can be modulated by adjusting the Eu-doped concentration and calcination temperature. The detailed formation mechanisms of CaF2:Eu2+/3+ one-dimensional nanostructures are advanced, and the neoteric fabrication technique is successfully established. This design conception and construction strategy can provide some guidance for fabricating other one-dimensional nanostructures.

Abstract:For the first time, La2O2CN2:Yb3+/Tm3+ upconversion luminescence nanofibers and nanobelts were successfully fabricated via cyanamidation of the respective relevant La2O3:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanofibers and nanobelts which were obtained by calcining the electrospinning made PVP/[La(NO3)3+Yb(NO3)3+Tm(NO3)3] composite nanofibers and nanobelts. The morphologies, structures, and properties of the nanofibers and nanobelts are investigated. The diameters of La2O2CN2:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanofibers and width of La2O2CN2:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanobelts with the thickness of 112 nm are 109 ± 4.3 nm and 1.8 ± 0.2 μm at 95% confidence level, respectively. Upconversion luminescent analysis manifests that La2O2CN2:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanofibers and nanobelts emit intense blue emissions around 476 nm corresponding to 1G4→3H6 energy level transitions of Tm3+ ions under the excitation of a 980-nm diode laser. For the La2O2CN2:30%Yb3+/x%Tm3+ nanofibers, the blue emission intensity increases when the Tm3+ concentration is increased from 0.1 to 0.5% and then decreases as the Tm3+ concentration is further increased from 0.5 to 1.0%, so the Tm3+ optimum concentration is 0.5%. For the La2O2CN2:y%Yb3+/0.5%Tm3+ nanofibers, when the concentration of Tm3+ is fixed at 0.5%, the blue emission intensity increases when the Yb3+ concentration is increased from 5 to 30% and then decreases as the Yb3+ concentration is further increased from 30 to 40%. Therefore, the optimum concentration of Yb3+ is 30%. Thus, the optimum molar concentration ratio of Yb3+ to Tm3+ ions is 60:1 in the as-prepared La2O2CN2:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanofibers. The formation mechanisms of the La2O2CN2:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanostructures are also proposed. The novel technique can be applied to prepare other rare earth oxycyanamide nanostructures of various morphologies.

Abstract:Luminescent-magnetic bifunctional NaGdF4:Eu3+ nanofibers were fabricated through the bond of electrospinning followed by calcination with fluorination technology for the first time. The structure, morphologies, luminescence, and magnetism of nanofibers have been characterized using various techniques. X-ray diffraction measurement indicates that NaGdF4:Eu3+ nanofibers are hexagonal phase. Scanning electron microscope measurement shows that the mean diameters of electrospinning-made polyvinyl pyrrolidone/[NaNO3+Gd(NO3)(3)+Eu(NO3)(3)] composite nanofibers and NaGdF4:Eu3+ nanofibers are, respectively, 428 +/- 4 and 231 +/- 4 nm under the confidence level of 95%. Under 274-nm ultraviolet light excitation, NaGdF4:Eu3+ nanofibers exhibit characteristic (D3,2,1,0FJ)-D-5-F-7 emissions of Eu3+ and the tendency of color tones of samples varies from blue, cold white, warm white to red via varying Eu3+ content. In addition, samples exhibit paramagnetic features and the magnetic properties of NaGdF4:Eu3+ nanofibers are tailorable by modulating the doping concentration of Eu3+. More importantly, the color-tailorable luminescence and paramagnetic properties are simultaneously realized in single-phase NaGdF4:Eu3+ nanofibers, which ideally suit to apply in many fields such as lighting and color displays, bioimaging, and magnetic resonance imaging. This design conception and construction strategy may provide some new guidance for synthesizing other rare-earth fluorides nanomaterials of multifarious morphologies.
CaGdAl3O7:Eu3+ unidimensional nanostructures: Facile electrospinning synthesis, structure and luminescence

Abstract:Inorganic luminescent materials with special unidimensional morphologies have become one kind of highly promising materials in luminescence field. Here, CaGdAl3O7:Eu3+ unidimensional nanostructures containing nanofibers, nanobelts and hollow nanofibers are fabricated perfectly via facile mono-axial electrospinning technology combined with subsequent oxidation procedure. The formation mechanisms of CaGdAl3O7:Eu3+ unidimensional nanostructures have been put forward and a new technology of constructing the unidimensional nanostructures is given. The morphologies of nanofiber, nanobelt and hollow nanofiber can be easily modulated via regulating the components of spinning solution and spinning parameters. CaGdAl3O7:Eu3+ unidimensional nanostructures are tetragonal in structure with space group of P ̅ 421m and possess perfect unidimensional morphologies. The unidimensional nanostructures show the predominant emissions at 590 and 619 nm under 256-nm ultraviolet light excitation, which result from 5D0→7F1 and 5D0→7F2 transitions of Eu3+ ions, respectively. The luminescence properties of the nanostructures can be adjusted by altering Eu3+ content, calcination temperatures and morphologies of the nanostructure. In brief, this work is of great significance for follow-up investigations of melilite group aluminates luminescence nanomaterials with distinct unidimensional morphologies.

Abstract:Novel 3D Lu2O2S:Eu3+ microstructures were successfully synthesized by a simple and effective solvothermal method followed by a subsequent calcination process. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that the precursors have been thoroughly transformed into lutetium oxysulfide with high crystallinity after calcination at 800°C. The field scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images show that the products are uniform and their morphologies are novel, just like two intertwined tetrahedrons slotted into each other. Furthermore, the obtained 3D Lu2O2S:Eu3+ architectures show strong red emission corresponding to the 5D0→7F2 transition of the Eu3+ ions under ultraviolet (UV) excitation.
A Facile Solution-Phase Approach to the Synthesis of Luminescent Europium Methacrylate Nanowires and Their Thermal Conversion into Europium Oxide Nanotubes

Abstract:Novel one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures of rare earth complexes (europium methacrylate (Eu(MA)(3))) have been prepared from the precursor of irregularly shaped Eu(MA)(3) powder in ethanol solvent without the assistance of an added surfactant, catalyst, or template. These hexagonal-shaped complex nanowires have diameters of about 100-300 nm and lengths ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) show that the precursor powder and the resulting nanowires have identical compositions. Under UV light excitation, strong red fluorescence can be clearly seen throughout the whole wires. This good luminescence characteristic of the complex nanowires is further confirmed by the fluorescence spectrum where strong and narrow emission can be seen. These rare earth complex nanowires provide a useful source for 1D rare earth oxide materials, as the europium ions are distributed uniformly in the Eu(MA)(3) nanowires. Through calcination, the Eu(MA)(3) nanowires are successfully converted into Eu2O3 nanotubes. X-ray investigation confirms that the Eu2O3 nanotubes have a cubic body-centered structure. FTIR measurements and TGA analysis are used to follow the calcination process. A plausible mechanism responsible for the formation of Eu2O3 nanotubes is presented.
Fabrication and Luminescent Properties of Eu³+ Doped Lanthanide Oxide Nanowires and Nanotubes by Electrospinning

Abstract:This paper described a novel approach for preparing singly-distributed 1D nanostructures of Y2O3, YVO4 and YBO3 doped with europium by electrospinning. The morphology and the crystal structure were investigated by SEM, TEM, and XRD. The luminescence properties of the 1D lanthanide oxide nanostructures were also characterized. These nanowires and nanotubes exhibited good luminescent properties. The fluorescence lifetimes 5D0 level for Eu3+ in Y2O3:Eu nanowires and YVO4:Eu nanowires and YBO3:Eu nanotubes were determined to be 560 mus and 493 mus and 1.63 ms, respectively. These nanowires and nanotubes will be probably applicable to make photovoltaic devices, solar cell and other photoelectric devices.
Multifunctional Luminescent Nanofibres from Eu3+-doped La2O2SO4 with Enhanced Oxygen Storage Capability

Abstract:The controlled synthesis of La2O2SO4: Eu3+ nanofibres (NF) for luminescent applications is presented here for the first time. Three dimensional nanofibrous structures with average diameter of 90 nm were prepared successfully. Eu3+ ions were further doped to study the luminescent property and phase structure. A strong red luminescence was obtained at the as-prepared NF. High asymmetry ratio (R) in the emission spectrum indicated that the Eu3+ ions were located in a distorted cation environment and the luminescent NF obtained possessed a good colour purity. The emission intensity of the resulting NF varied with different Eu3+ contents with the best emission brightness obtained at 20% Eu3+ doping. An 18% improved luminescence decay time at a relative lower annealing temperature (650 degrees C) was obtained for the nanofibrous structure when compared to the corresponding bulk materials (BM). The quantum efficiency (QE) of the as-synthesised NF was found to be 6.3%, which was 17% enhanced from the QE of BM (5.4%). Oxidation activity of NF compared to BM was measured using Temperature-Programmed Reduction (TPR). The TPR peak temperature for the consumption of hydrogen was decreased 12% with the employment of NF, suggesting well improved oxygen storage capability of the resulting NF. Our results indicate the multifunctional applications of the resulting NF in different fields such as optics and oxygen storage. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:La2O3 nanofibers and nanobelts were fabricated by calcination of the respective electrospun PVP/[La(NO3)(3)] composite nanofibers and nanobelts. For the first time, La2O2CN2 nanofibers and nanobelts were successfully prepared via cyanamidation of La2O3 respective nanostructures employing NH3 gas and graphite at high temperature. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that La2O2CN2 nanostructures are tetragonal in structure with space group of I4/mmm. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis indicates that the thickness and the width of La2O2CN2 nanobelts are respectively 180 am and 2.56 +/- 0.68 mu m, and the diameter of La2O2CN2 nanofibers is 248.10 +/- 40.98 nm under the 95% confidence level. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation shows that La2O2CN2 nanofibers and nanobelts are all composed of nanoparticles. La2O2CN2 nanostructures with different morphology exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity in photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under ultraviolet light irradiation, and the nanofibers have higher photocatalytic ability than nanobelts under the same experimental conditions. Novel La2O2S:Eu3+ Nanofibers Fabricated from Sulfurization of La2O3:Eu3+ Electrospun Nanofibers

Abstract:La2O2S:Eu3+ nanofibers were successfully fabricated by electrospinning combined with a double-crucible sulfurization technique. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that La2O2S:Eu3+ nanofibers were pure hexagonal phase with space group P-3m1. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis and histograms revealed that the mean diameter of La2O2S:Eu3+ nanofibers was 133.61 +/- 16.00 nm under the 95% confidence level. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis manifested that the La2O2S:Eu3+ nanofibers emitted red emission at 624 nm attributed to D-5(0)-> F-7(2) energy levels transition of Eu3+ ions under the excitation of 264 nm ultraviolet light. It was found that the optimum molar ratio of Eu3+ ions was 5%. CIE analysis demonstrated that the emitting colors of La2O2S:Eu3+ nanofibers were located in the yellow and red regions and color-tuned luminescence can be obtained by changing doping concentration of Eu3+ ions, which could be applied in the field of optical telecommunication and optoelectronic devices. The possible formation mechanism of La2O2S:Eu3+ nanofibers were also proposed.

Abstract:La2O2CN2:Er3+and La2O2CN2:Er3+/Yb3+ upconversion (UC) luminescence nanofibers were successfully fabricated via cyanamidation of the respective relevant La2O3:Er3+ and La2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ nanofibers which were obtained by calcining the electrospun composite nanofibers. The morphologies, structures, and properties of the nanofibers are investigated. The mean diameters of La2O2CN2:Er3+ and La2O2CN2:Er3+/Yb3+ nanofibers are 179.46 ± 12.58 nm and 198.85 ± 17.07 nm, respectively. It is found that intense green and weak red emissions around 524, 542, and 658 nm corresponding to the 2H11/2→4I15/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2, and 4F9/2→4Il5/2 energy levels transitions of Er3+ ions are observed for La2O2CN2:Er3+ and La2O2CN2:Er3+/Yb3+ nanofibers under the excitation of a 980‐nm diode laser. Moreover, the emitting colors of La2O2CN2:Er3+ and La2O2CN2:Er3+/Yb3+ nanofibers are all located in the green region. The upconversion luminescent mechanism and formation mechanism of the nanofibers are also proposed.

Abstract:LaOCl:Eu3+ nanofibers, nanobelts and nanotubes were prepared by electrospinning combined with a double-crucible chlorination technique using NH4Cl as chlorinating agent. Different morphologies of LaOCl:Eu3+ were obtained via adjusting some of the electrospun parameters. X-ray powder diffraction analysis indicated that LaOCl:Eu3+ nanostructures were tetragonal with space group P4/nmm. Scanning electron microscope analysis and histograms revealed that diameters LaOCl:Eu3+ nanofibers and nanotubes, and the width of LaOCl:Eu3+ nanobelts were respectively 198.64 ± 15.07, 168.86 ± 24.70 and 2.103 ± 0.3345 μm under the 95 % confidence level. Transmission electron microscope observation showed that as-obtained LaOCl:Eu3+ nanotubes were hollow-centered structure. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis manifested that the LaOCl:Eu3+ with different morphologies emitted the predominant emission peaks at 616 and 618 nm originating from the transition 5D0 → 7F2 of Eu3+ ions under the excitation of 283-nm ultraviolet light. It was found that the optimum molar ratio of Eu3+/(La3++Eu3+) ions was 5 %. LaOCl:Eu3+ nanobelts exhibited the strongest PL intensity of the three morphologies under the same doping concentration. CIE analysis demonstrated that color-tuned luminescence can be obtained by changing doping concentration of Eu3+ ions and morphologies of nanomaterials, which could be applied in the fields of optical telecommunication and optoelectronic devices. The possible formation mechanisms of LaOCl:Eu3+ nanofibers, nanobelts and nanotubes were also proposed.

Abstract:Luminescent one-dimensional Lu2O2S:Eu3+ fibers were successfully prepared via an electrospinning method followed by a subsequent two-step calcination process for the first time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the as-obtained samples present a fiber-like morphology with uniform size and the diameters of the fibers changed from microscale to nanoscale with the increase of Eu3+ concentration. The emission spectra indicated that the obtained Lu2O2S:Eu3+ fibers exhibited typical Eu3+ (D-5(0)-F-7(J)) red emission under ultraviolet excitation and the concentration quenching effects occurred in the fibers composed of 3 mol% Eu3+. The decay kinetics behaviors of the Lu2O2S:Eu3+ fibers were investigated, which showed that the fibers composed of 3 mol% Eu3+ also had the longest lifetime. The spectral characteristics and Eu-O ligand behavior were discussed through Judd-Ofelt parameters such as intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4)), radiative transition probability (A(RAD)), radiative lifetime (tau(rad)), and branching ratio (beta(0J)). In addition, the energy-dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and the formation mechanism were also displayed in order to better understand the work.

Abstract:Uniform Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanorods and nanowires have been successfully prepared through a simple solution-based hydrothermal process followed by a subsequent calcination process without using any surfactant, catalyst, or template. On the basis of X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results, it can be assumed that the as-obtained precursors have the structure formula of Lu4O(OH)(9)(NO3), which is a new phase and has not been reported. The morphology of the precursors could be modulated from nanorods to nanowires with the increase of pH value using ammonia solution. The as-formed precursors could transform to cubic Lu2O3:Eu3+ with the same morphology and a slight shrinkage in size after an annealing process, Both the Lu2O3:Eu3+ nanorods and nanowires exhibit the strong red emission corresponding to the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transition of the Eu3+ ions under UV light excitation or low-voltage electron beam excitation.

Abstract:A two-step method was developed for the large-scale synthesis of luminescent Y2O3:Eu nanobelts. The structure and composition of the as-prepared Y2O3:Eu were characterized by XRD, TEM, and EDX.
