Abstract:The sensitized oxidation of Fe 2+ ions by I 2 or I 3 − in acidic aqueous solution has been examined. The reactions could occur either under UV or visible light, with the stoichiometric formation of Fe 3+ and I − . However, the I 3 − -sensitized reaction was fast and complete only in the presence of excess Fe 2+ . Through a kinetics study, it becomes clear that I and I 2 − are the main reactive species for the I 2 and I 3 − - sensitized oxidation of Fe 2+ , respectively. Moreover, the quantum yields determined with the I 2 and I 3 − -sensitized formation of Fe 3+ at 456 nm were 0.119 and 0.118, respectively. The I 2 -sensitized reaction was first order only in I 2 , and had an Arrhenius activation energy of 29.3 kJ mol −1 . It is proposed that the process of Fe 2+ oxidation by I is fast, while the rate-determining step is the formation and self-recombination of I radicals.
Revealing *OOH key intermediates and regulating H2O2 photoactivation by surface relaxation of Fenton-like catalysts

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) molecules play important roles in many green chemical reactions. However, the high activation energy limits their application efficiency, and there is still huge controversy about the activation path of H2O2 molecules over the presence of *OOH intermediates. Here, we confirmed the formation of the key species *OOH in the heterogeneous system, via in situ shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS), isotope labeling, and theoretical calculation. In addition, we found that compared with *H2O2, *OOH was more conducive to the charge transfer behavior with the catalyst and the activation of an O-O bond. Furthermore, we proposed to improve the local coordination structure and electronic density of the YFeO3 catalyst by regulating the surface relaxation with Ti modification so as to reduce the activation barrier of H2O2 and to improve the production efficiency of •OH. As a result, the kinetics rates of the Fenton-like (photo-Fenton) reaction had been significantly increased several times. The •OH free radical activity mechanism and molecular transformation pathways of 4-chloro phenol (4-CP) were also revealed. This may provide a clearer vision for the further study of H2O2 activation and suggest a means of designing catalysts for efficient H2O2 activation.
Sunlight-driven Photo-Transformation of Bisphenol A by Fe(III) in Aqueous Solution: Photochemical Activity and Mechanistic Aspects.

Abstract:Iron is one of the most abundant elements in aquatic environments, and plays important roles in the fate and transport of environmental contaminants. Previous studies on the photochemical properties of Fe(III) species have largely focused on complexes formed between Fe(III) and environmental ligands such as natural organic matter (NOM) under UV irradiation, whereas the potentially important roles of hydrolysis species of Fe(III),in Fe(III)-mediated photo-transformation of environmental contaminants under solar light are not fully understood. In this study, the solar light-driven photochemical activities of hydrolysis species of Fe(III) were further explored, using a system containing only 0.5 mM Fe-2(SO4)(3) and bisphenol A. The important role of colloidal [Fe(OH)(3)](m), formed from the hydrolysis of Fe3+, as a core photochemical species of Fe(III) was proposed and verified. Interestingly, O-2(-center dot), rather than (OH)-O-center dot, was identified (via electron spin resonance) as the key active radical responsible for the degradation of bisphenol A. We propose that unlike Fe(OH)(2+), which under UV irradiation can yield (OH)-O-center dot (Fe(OH)(2+) + hv -> Fe2+ + (OH)-O-center dot), colloidal [Fe(OH)(3)](m) produces O-2(-center dot) even in sunlight ([Fe(OH)(3)](m) + 2O(2) + hv -> Fe(II) + 2O(2)(-center dot)+ H2O). Abstract:Inspired by the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II, the nature of intermediates and the oxygen–oxygen bond formation mechanism in photocatalytic water oxidation have been the topic of current research. Herein, we report that the key intermediates and the O–O bond formation step in the catalytic water oxidation by [RuIII(bpy)3]3+ or the excited state of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (3DDQ∗) with a nonheme iron complex, [FeII(dpaq)]+, were captured and identified. Especially, two keyintermediates, such as an iron(V)-oxo ([FeV(dpaq)(O)]2+ or [FeIV(dpaq cation radical)(O)]2+) and an iron(III)-hydroperoxo species ([FeIII(dpaq)(OOH)]+), were captured in the water oxidation reactions; [FeV(dpaq)(O)]2+ (or [FeIV(dpaq cation radical)(O)]2+) was detected using transient absorption spectroscopy in the oxidation of [FeIV(dpaq)(O)]+ by 3DDQ∗, whereas the formation of [FeIII(dpaq)(OOH)]+ was directly observed by reacting [FeIV(dpaq)(O)]+ with [RuIII(bpy)3]3+ or 3DDQ∗ in the presence of water. The evolution of O2 upon the oxidation of [FeIII(dpaq)(OOH)]+ by DDQ was also demonstrated in this study.

Abstract:Sole O 2 or H 2 O 2 oxidant hardly oxidize Sb(III) on a time scale of hours to days, but Sb(III) oxidation can simultaneously occur in Fe(II) oxidation by O 2 and H 2 O 2 due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, Sb(III) and Fe(II) co-oxidation mechanisms regarding the dominant ROS and effects of organic ligands require further elucidation. Herein, the co-oxidation of Sb(III) and Fe(II) by O 2 and H 2 O 2 was studied in detail. The results indicated that increasing the pH significantly increased Sb(III) and Fe(II) oxidation rates during Fe(II) oxygenation, while the highest Sb(III) oxidation rate and oxidation efficiency was obtained at pH 3 with H 2 O 2 as the oxidant. HCO 3 − and H 2 PO 4 − anions exerted different effects on Sb(III) oxidation in Fe(II) oxidation processes by O 2 and H 2 O 2 . In addition, Fe(II) complexed with organic ligands could improve Sb(III) oxidation rates by 1 to 4 orders of magnitude mainly due to more ROS production. Moreover, quenching experiments combined with the PMSO probe demonstrated that OH was the main ROS at acidic pH, whereas Fe(IV) played a key role in Sb(III) oxidation at near-neutral pH. In particular, the steady-state concentration of Fe(IV) ([F e (IV)] ss ) and kFe(IV)/Sb(III) were determined to be 1.66×10−9 M and 2.57×105 M −1 s −1 , respectively. Overall, these findings help to better understand the geochemical cycling and fate of Sb in Fe(II)- and DOM-rich subsurface environments undergoing redox fluctuations and are conductive to developing Fenton reactions for the in-situ remediation of Sb(III)-contaminated environments.

Abstract:Singlet oxygen (1O2) as an important reactive oxygen species (ROS) has broad application prospects in the fields of organic synthesis, cell repair, environmental remediation et al. However, the mechanism of the 1O2 formation in the Fe2+/PMS Fenton-like system, which is directly transformed from O2− or generated by OH as an intermediate, is still a mystery. Herein, we designed an inverse opal WO3 (IO WO3) co-catalytic photo-Fenton-like system, which can finish RhB (20 mg·L−1) degradation within 6 min. And the optimal condition of pH, light intensity, FeSO4·7H2O dosage, PMS dosage, cocatalyst dosage were also explored in this work. The high-efficiency photogenerated long lifetime charge carriers produced by IO WO3 cocatalyst under photocatalytic process can directly make a conversion from SO4−and O2− to 1O2 without OH intermediate in the solution. Furthermore, the IO WO3 cocatalyst addition can improve the reduction of Fe3+/Fe2+ ions to enhance activation of PMS molecule. As for the interconnected periodic macroporous framework of inverse opal WO3 would help to improve mass transfer and light harvest in the photo-Fenton-like process. This facile synthesized material with recyclable and stable co-catalytic activity for the contaminant remediation, and the selective generation of 1O2 in the Fe2+/PMS process, will highlight its huge application in environmental potential.

The Nature And Catalytic Reactivity Of Uio-66 Supported Fe3o4 Nanoparticles Provide New Insights Into Fe-Zr Dual Active Centers In Fenton-Like Reactions

Abstract:Fe3O4 nanoparticles supported on zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks, UiO-66, were firstly used as a tool for exploring the interaction between dual active centers in Fenton-like reactions. Compared with traditional H2O2/Fe3O4 system, nearly 3 times hydroxyl radicals (HO.) were found in the H2O2/Fe3O4@UiO-66 system at pH 5. Additionally, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) was also detected in the H2O2/Fe3O4@UiO-66 system. X-ray photo-electron and Mossbauer spectroscopy analyses indicate that the electrons on Fe(II) were directed towards Zr, causing Fe(II) to lose electrons more easily, which facilitates H2O2 reduction. However, O-1(2) was formed when superoxide anions (O-2(center dot-)) lost electrons on the Zr center; these electrons can be transferred to Fe(III), accelerating Fe(III) reduction. These findings reveal that Zr centers can interact with Fe to form dual active centers in Fenton-like reactions. And it also provides a novel strategy to optimize dual active center catalysts for Fenton-like processes in water remediation.
Toward a better understanding of ferric-oxalate complex photolysis: The role of the aqueous/air interface of droplet

Abstract:In this work, the photo reactivity of ferric oxalate (Fe(III)-Ox) complex in atmospheric particles was investigated. Raman spectroscopy was used to explore the mechanism and kinetics of Fe(III)-Ox photolysis occurring at the aqueous/gas interface, inside the droplet and in bulk solution. Ferrous carbonate (FeCO3) was detected indicating that carbonate ion (CO32-) formed inside the droplets would compete with oxalate ligands for iron complexation. A higher concentration of photoproduct Fe(II)-Ox was observed at the surface and inside of the droplets than in bulk solution. In particular, Fe(III)-Ox on the droplet surface was quickly reduced with light and Fe(II)-Ox concentration gradually decreased with irradiation time. The evolution of Fe(II)-Ox concentration was similar inside the droplet and in bulk solution with a trend of first increasing and then gradually decreasing during irradiation time. Although FeCO3 would hinder Fenton intermediate reaction, the photolysis rate of Fe(III)-Ox in droplets was almost two orders of magnitude times faster than that observed during bulk experiment. In general, the photolysis mechanism and kinetics of Fe(III)-Ox in aqueous/air interface, inside of droplet and bulk solution were distinct, and the production of oxide species from the atmospheric Fe(III)-Ox droplets was underestimated.

Insights into mechanisms of UV/ferrate oxidation for degradation of phenolic pollutants: Role of superoxide radicals

Abstract:In this study, the performances and mechanisms of UV/ferrate(VI) oxidation were investigated comprehensively using 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as a probe compound. UV/ferrate(VI) oxidation could efficiently degrade 2,4-DCP and its oxidation ability outperformed conventional UV-based advanced oxidation processes. Moreover, the degradation process of 2,4-DCP followed the pseudo-first order kinetics. In the absence of phosphate buffer, the rate constant of 2,4-DCP degradation increased from 9.4 × 10-3 to 2.4 × 10-2 min-1 when pH value was increased from 3.0 to 6.0. However, the degradation was significantly inhibited by phosphate buffer at an identical pH due to the complexation of phosphate with the ferrate(VI) decay products. HCO3- appreciably accelerated the degradation of 2,4-DCP, while Cl- showed a negligible effect on the degradation. For the first time, combining with the results of chemical probe method, competitive kinetic experiment, electron spin resonance spectra and radical quenching studies, superoxide radicals were demonstrated as the dominant reactive species responsible for the degradation. On the basis of the intermediates detected by LC-MS/MS analysis, a pathway for 2,4-DCP degradation was proposed. This study provides a novel approach for contaminant removal using UV/ferrate(VI) oxidation and sheds new insights into the oxidation mechanisms.

Abstract:Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation under anoxic conditions has been intensively studied, while such mechanisms are insufficient to be applied in oxic environments with depleted Fe(II). Here, we investigated expanded pathways of sunlight-driven ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of dissolved oxygen, without initial addition of dissolved Fe(II). We found that sunlight significantly facilitated the transformation of ferrihydrite to goethite compared to that under dark conditions. Redox active species (hole-electron pairs, reactive radicals, and Fe(II)) were produced from the ferrihydrite interface via the photoinduced electron transfer processes. Experiments with systematically varied wet chemistry conditions probed the relative contributions of three pathways for the production of hydroxyl radicals: (1) oxidation of water (5.0%); (2) reduction of dissolved oxygen (40.9%); and (3) photolysis of Fe(III)-hydroxyl complexes (54.1%). Results also showed superoxide radicals as the main oxidant for Fe(II) reoxidation under acidic conditions, thus promoting the ferrihydrite transformation. The presence of inorganic ions (chloride, sulfate, and nitrate) did not only affect the hydrolysis and precipitation of Fe(III) but also the generation of radicals via photoinduced charge transfer reactions. The involvement of redox active species and the accompanying mineral transformations would exert a profound effect on the fate of multivalent elements and organic contaminants in aquatic environments.
Insights into the Role of In-Situ and Ex-Situ Hydrogen Peroxide for Enhanced Ferrate(vi) Towards Oxidation of Organic Contaminants.

Abstract:Recently, several studies have been conscious of the promotion effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a self-decay product of ferrate (Fe(VI)), on Fe(VI) to oxidize contaminations, but the pivotal activation mechanism has not been thoroughly evaluated. This work aims to compare and reveal the promoting mechanism of H2O2 in Fe(VI) and Fe(VI)-H2O2 processes, and to illustrate the practical use potential of Fe(VI)-H2O2 system. Many lines of evidence verified the involvement of (OH)-O-center dot and O-2(center dot-) in pollutant degradation were excluded in Fe(VI) and Fe(VI)-H2O2 systems, meaning that high dosage of H2O2 cannot trigger an activation pathway different from in-situ H2O2. The better oxidation performance of the Fe(VI)-H2O2 system than Fe(VI) alone was ascribed to the catalytic role of in-situ and ex-situ H2O2, which can directly and/ or indirectly facilitate the formation of Fe(IV) and Fe(V). Considering the structural similarity of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) with H2O2 as well as their universality in water pollutant remediation, the oxidation properties and reactive oxidants of Fe(VI)-PMS and Fe(VI)-PDS processes were also examined. Besides, the Fe(VI)-H2O2 system suffered from less restriction by inorganic ions and natural organic matter, and exhibited satisfactory pollutant removal effects in real water. Overall, this work provides a further and comprehensive cognition about the role of H2O2 in Fe(VI) and Fe(VI)-H2O2 systems.
Significantly Accelerated Hydroxyl Radical Generation by Fe(III)-Oxalate Photochemistry in Aerosol Droplets.

Abstract:Fe(III)-oxalate complexes are ubiquitous in atmospheric environments, which can release reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as H2O2, O•2-, and OH• under light irradiation. Although Fe(III)-oxalate photochemistry has been investigated extensively, the understanding of its involvement in authentic atmospheric environments such as aerosol droplets is far from enough, since the current available knowledge has mainly been obtained in bulk-phase studies. Here, we find that the production of OH• by Fe(III)-oxalate in aerosol microdroplets is about 10-fold greater than that of its bulk-phase counterpart. In addition, in the presence of Fe(III)-oxalate complexes, the rate of photo-oxidation from SO2 to sulfate in microdroplets was about 19-fold faster than that in the bulk phase. The availability of efficient reactants and mass transfer due to droplet effects made dominant contributions to the accelerated OH• and SO42- formation. This work highlights the necessary consideration of droplet effects in atmospheric laboratory studies and model simulations.

Abstract:Fe3+ mediating photodegradation of organic pollutants has attracted extensive attention in the field of environment remediation. However, most works focused on low concentration (CFe 1 mM). The formed binuclear hydrolyzed Fe3+ species ([(H2O)4Fe(μ-OH)2Fe(H2O)4]4+) in HC-Fe3+ system significantly broadens the optical absorption range and induces to the generation of Fe(IV), thus leading to highly efficient degradation of organic pollutants. In addition, a logarithmic correlation between the adiabatic ionization potential (AIP) and the reaction rate constant (k) of organics is obtained. The new findings further broaden the knowledge on the generation of Fe(IV) and the photo-induced charge transfer mechanism of binuclear hydrolyzed Fe3+ species in the VLIHC-Fe3+ system.

Fe(III) oxyhydroxides mediated electron transfer from thiols to O 2 for hydroxyl radical production

Abstract:Thiols serve as important electron reservoirs in subsurface environments, playing an important role in biogeochemical cycling of redox-sensitive elements. Nevertheless, due to the kinetic constraint on thiol oxidation by O 2 , hydroxyl radical (•OH) production during thiol oxygenation had long been disregarded. •OH is the most powerful oxidant in natural environment, capable of oxidizing most of inorganic and organic pollutants. This study revealed that Fe(III) oxyhydroxides could mediate electron transfer from thiols to O 2 , thereby facilitating •OH production within a pH range of 3 to 9. For instance, at pH 7, the presence of 1 g/L ferrihydrite increased •OH accumulation from <0.2 to 15.3 μM within 10 h during the oxygenation of 6 mM cysteine. This enhancement resulted from Fe(III) oxyhydroxides altering the •OH production pathway from the direct oxidation of thiols by O 2 to the oxidation of adsorbed Fe(II) by O 2 . In natural soils, Fe(III) oxyhydroxides were estimated to contribute to 69–81% of thiol removal and to 56–82% of •OH production. Furthermore, the •OH produced during thiol oxygenation also exhibited the capability to degrade phenol. This study highlights the previously overlooked catalytic role of Fe(III) oxyhydroxides in facilitating thiol oxidation and •OH production.

Abstract:The surface photochemical activity of goethite, which occurs widely in surface soils and sediments, plays a crucial role in the environmental transformation of various pollutants and natural organic matter. This study systemically investigated the mechanism of different types of surface hydroxyl groups on goethite in generating reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and Fe(III) reduction under sunlight irradiation. Surface hydroxyl groups were found to induce photoreductive dissolution of Fe(III) at the goethite-water interface to produce Fe-(aq)(2+), while promoting the production of ROSs. Substitution of the surface hydroxyl groups on goethite by fluoride significantly inhibited the photochemical activity of goethite, demonstrating their important role in photochemical activation of goethite. The results showed that the surface hydroxyl groups (especially the terminating hydroxyl groups, equivalent to FeOH) led to the formation of Fe(III)-hydroxyl complexes via ligand-metal charge transfer on the goethite surface upon photoexcitation, facilitating the production of Fe-(aq)(2+) and center dot OH. The bridging hydroxyl groups (equivalent to Fe2OH) were shown to mainly catalyze the production of H2O2, leading to the subsequent light-driven Fenton reaction to produce center dot OH. These findings provide important insights into the activation of molecular oxygen on the goethite surface driven by sunlight in the environment, and the corresponding degradation of anthropogenic and natural organic compounds caused by the generated ROSs.
Photoinduced Degradation of Orange II on Different Iron (hydr)oxides in Aqueous Suspension: Rate Enhancement on Addition of Hydrogen Peroxide, Silver Nitrate, and Sodium Fluoride.

Abstract:Photoinduced organic oxidation with iron (hydr)oxides in aqueous suspension has been argued with respect to two principal mechanisms: (a) photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer within a surface complex and (b) semiconductor photocatalysis. In this work, the photodegradation of azo dye orange II with UV light (lambda > or = 320 nm) in the aerated aqueous suspensions of haematite, maghemite, magnetite, goethite, lepidocrocite, and feroxyhite at an initial pH of 6.5 has been examined. The results showed that (1) all of the catalysts were effective at initiating dye photodegradation but the iron oxides appeared to be more active than the iron hydroxides; (2) the photodissolution of different iron phases and the dye photolysis in the dissolved iron solutions were very slow; (3) the initial rate of dye loss was proportional to the initial amount of adsorption, implying dye photodegradation on the catalyst surface; and (4) upon addition of H2O2, AgNO3, and NaF to the suspension, the rate of dye photodegradation was significantly enhanced with all the catalysts. In the presence of H2O2, less than 50% of the total rate enhancement was ascribed to the photo-Fenton reaction in solution and the dark Fenton reactions in solution and on the catalyst. In the presence of AgNO3, about 1 mole of silver particles was produced by consuming 3 moles of the dye substrate. In the presence of NaF, hydroxyl radicals were detected by an ethanol scavenger, whereas such radicals were not found in the absence of NaF. Moreover, under visible-light irradiation (lambda > or = 450 nm), the dye degradation was much slower than that under UV irradiation, but the reaction was also accelerated by the addition of NaF and AgNO3. The results suggest that mechanism b, not mechanism a, is operative for dye photodegradation occurring on the iron (hydr)oxides. A detailed discussion of all possible pathways is given in the text.

Abstract:Fe3 O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with intrinsic peroxidase-like properties have attracted significant interest, although limited information is available on the definite catalytic mechanism. Here, it is shown that both complexed hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and high-valent FeO species are attributed primarily to the peroxidase-like catalytic activity of Fe3 O4 NPs under acid conditions rather than only being caused by free •OH radicals generated through the iron-driven Fenton/Haber-Weiss reactions as previously thought. The low energy barrier of OO bond dissociation of H2 O2 /•OOH (0.14 eV) and the high oxidation activity of surface FeO (0 eV) due to the reduced state of Fe on the surface of Fe3 O4 NPs thermodynamically favor both the •OH and FeO pathways. By contrast, high-valent FeO species are the key intermediates in the catalytic cycles of natural peroxidase enzymes. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the enzyme-like activity of Fe3 O4 NPs can be rationally regulated by modulating the size, surface structure, and valence of active metal atoms in the light of this newly proposed nanozyme catalytic mechanism.
