Abstract:Metamaterials have attracted tremendous research interest due to their fascinating unusual properties that are not available from nature, such as negative refractive index, reverse Doppler Effect, negative compressibility, etc. [1]. However, conventional metamaterials are simply structures as their special properties are independent to intrinsic properties of building blocks, which tarnishes their application perspectives to a large extent. Ferromagnetic microwires have been reported feasible to create electromagnetically double negative (DNG) medium by arranging them in a parallel [2] and orthogonal manner [3]. Recently we proposed the concept of metacomposites containing Fe-based microwires and revealed their DNG properties in line with advantages such as structural integrity and economic processing over metamaterials [4, 5]. Herein, as a step further, metacomposites containing hybrid Co- and Fe-based microwire arrays with different topology are designed and fabricated. A tunable DNG feature under external dc magnetic field is observed in the metacomposite containing continuous wire arrays evidenced by transmission windows and a negative dielectric permittivity dispersion. A DNG/band stop characteristic is observed in the metacomposite containing short-cut wires confirmed by a dip at 6 GHz in the transmission spectrum. Experimentally, glass coated Fe77Si10B10C3 (total diameter of 20 μm, glass coat thickness of 3.4 μm) and Fe4Co68.7Ni1B13Si11Mo2.3 (total diameter of 12.8 μm, glass coat thickness of 2.4 μm) were embedded into E-glass 913 glass fibers reinforced prepregs in two topological arrangements: parallel Co-based (3 mm spacing) and parallel Fe-based wire array (10 mm spacing); short-cut Co-based and continuous orthogonal Fe-based wire array (10 mm spacing). A prepreg lay-up and a standard autoclave curing procedure were then followed to fabricate metacomposite sample with the size of 500×500×1.2 mm3. The microwave behavior of the metacomposites was examined by the free-space measurement in the frequency band of 0.9 to 17 GHz with the electrical component parallel to the glass fiber direction. To track the magnetic field tunable properties, an additional external dc magnetic bias up to 3000 Oe was applied along the glass fiber direction [6]. In the metacomposite containing continuous hybrid wires, a series of transmission windows emerge in 1-3 GHz when external field is higher than 300 Oe together with a region of negative values of real part of permittivity. A further analysis on transmission phase velocity validates such magnetically tuned DNG feature. This is due to the fact that the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of microwires provides negative magnetic permeability and the parallel arrangement performs as plasmonics thus giving negative ε. The window positions in addition to the DNG band can be tuned by increasing the field and follows a redshift-blueshift behavior due to the competition of loss compensation effect and FMR. In the metacomposite containing short-cut wires, an enhanced transmission window and a sharp transmission dip are identified in the 1-6 GHz compared with metacomposite containing pure Fe-based orthogonal arrays, indicating a DNG/bandstop feature. This suggests that the DNG properties can be conveniently turned on/off by inserting a layer of short-cut Co-based wires. We explain such effect by the dipole resonance of short-cut Co-based wires at 5.8 GHz and their synergistic role in enhancing DNG properties of hybrid metacomposites. Moreover, the dynamic interactions between Co-Co, Fe-Fe and Co-Fe wires contribute to the absorption of metacomposites and make the DNG or bandstop operating frequency tunable by controlling these mesostructural factors. These unique findings created by hybridization Fe- and Co-based wires into composites make proposed metacomposites strong candidates for microwave cloaking and radio frequency identification.
