Abstract:Detailed measurements of diurnal variations in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were made at seven locations within the canopy of aMiscanthus sinensis grassland to evaluate the light conditions of microsites for heliophilic tree seedlings. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the short-term light fluctuation on a clear day was highly dependent on the wind speed and solar elevation angle, whereas on a cloudy day it was mainly determined by the PPFD incident from above the canopy. The relative PPFD at 40 cm aboveground varied from 0.065 to 0.252, depending on sky conditions and the sensor's position in relation to clumped patches ofM. sinensis. On a clear day, the proportion of PPFD readings above 100 μmolm−2s−1 contributed by sunflecks ranged between 25.4% and 82.0%. Computer simulation showed that the contribution of sunflecks to the daily carbon gain ofQuercus serrata seedlings may range from 11% to 65%. The mean relative PPFD measured under diffuse light conditions was linearly related to the daily total PPFD and the daily carbon gain by single leaves ofQ. serrata seedlings. This suggests that the relative PPFD under diffuse light conditions provides an appropriate measure of site-specific light availability within a grass canopy.

Abstract:Spatial variation in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was investigated in detail at different heights within the canopy of aMiscanthus sinensis grassland to evaluate the light environment of microsites for establishment of heliophilic tree seedlings. Highly heterogeneous patterns of light distribution were revealed within the apparently uniform grass canopies, especially under direct light. The frequency distribution patterns of relative PPFD (RPFD) were compared among different solar and sky conditions. With increasing height in the canopy, the mean RPFD value and standard deviation (SD) increased, while the skewness and kurtosis of the distribution decreased. The mean RPFD and SD were higher, especially at higher solar elevation angles, under direct light than those under diffuse light conditions. The frequency distribution of RPFD was more platykurtic under direct light and at higher solar elevation angles.
Characteristics of Small-Scale Heterogeneity in Light Availability Within A Miscanthus-Sinensis Canopy

Abstract:To examine the small-scale variations in light and space availability, photon flux density (PFD) at 20 cm aboveground was measured at 2 cm intervals along each of four 160 cm horizontal transects under an overcast sky condition in aMiscanthus sinensis Anderss grass canopy. Two characteristics were identified for the variation patterns of PFD penetration along transects; the predominant variations of PFD penetration prevailed at the scales usually larger than 10 cm, and the point-to-point fluctuations occurred everywhere. Spatial autocorrelation coefficients of PFD penetration along transects were highly positive (>0.5) over the lag distances from 2 to 6 cm, while those of the point-to-point fluctuations exhibited a random series. Spectrum analysis showed a higher spectrum density at the lower frequency, that is, at the higher periodicity, which indicated that the variation of PFD penetration was mainly due to the patchy distribution of grass canopy. PFD-available spans along the transects and contour maps were examined to evaluate the microsites fulfilling both PFD and space requirements in the growth ofQuercus serrata Thunb. seedlings. More than 75% of the spans with PFD penetration constantly exceeding 0.04 were shorter than 8 cm, which suggests that a large proportion of high PFD spots may not be used byQ. serrata seedlings in the grass canopy because of the limitation of availability in space. The spatial heterogeneity of PFD at small scales may be of great importance in the succession ofM. sinensis grass communities.

Abstract:Spatial heterogeneity in light availability for tree seedlings under the canopy of a temperate pine forest was studied. Six-day measurements at 10-s intervals revealed a great variety in the temporal patterns of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and histograms among observation days and microsites; mean daily total PPFD relative to full sun varied from 1.5% to 10.4% depending on the microsites. The occurrence and duration of PPFD above 80 μmol m−2 s−1, which might reflect sunfleck activity, varied greatly among the microsites. However, several simple empirical relationships were found between some parameters characterizing microsite light availability and sunfleck activity; the diffuse site factor was correlated well with other parameters, including daily total PPFD, daily totals and daily summed durations of high PPFD above any examined threshold level, and its contribution to daily total PPFD. Diffuse site factors which were obtained for 700 microsites within an area of 28 m2 on three different occasions during the growing season showed high correlations within the microsite. Based on the regressed relationship between the relative growth rate of current-year seedlings ofQuercus serrata and the microsite diffuse site factor and the results of area-survey measurement of the diffuse site factor, an estimation was made of the abundance of potential ‘safe-sites’ for seedling growth of the species; the ‘safe sites’ were estimated to cover 40% and 0% of the total area of the sunny and shady sites of the forest, respectively.
Effects of microsite light availability on the survival and growth of oak seedlings within a grassland

Abstract:Effects of microsite light availability on the growth and survival of transplantedQuercus serrata Thunb. seedlings in aMiscanthus sinensis Anderss. grass canopy were investigated by a “plant's eye view” approach. Diffuse site factors, i.e., the fractional transmissions of diffuse photosynthetic photon flux density, were estimated at 15 cm aboveground in 108 microsites where the seedlings grew. Microsite diffuse site factors were significantly different between surviving and dead seedlings during the experiment period from April to October (F[1,14]=10.9, P<0.01). Relative growth rate of dry weight for individual seedlings positively depended on the diffuse site factors (r2=0.482, P<0.001 in May; r2=0.312, P<0.001 in October). Only 16 seedlings produced their second stem flush within the grass canopy. The ratio of height to dry weight of the second stem flush was significantly higher for the seedlings grew in shady microsites than for those in less shady microsites (r2=0,471, P<0.01 in May). This study suggests that the microsite heterogeneity of light availability is one of the important factors affecting the establishment of tree seedlings in patchy grasslands.

Abstract:Leaf water content is one of the most common physiological parameters limiting efficiency of photosynthesis and biomass productivity in plants including Miscanthus. Therefore, it is of great significance to determine or predict the water content quickly and non-destructively. In this study, we explored the relationship between leaf water content and diffuse reflectance spectra in Miscanthus. Three multivariate calibrations including partial least squares (PLS), least squares support vector machine regression (LSSVR), and radial basis function (RBF) neural network (NN) were developed for the models of leaf water content determination. The non-linear models including RBF_LSSVR and RBF_NN showed higher accuracy than the PLS and Lin_LSSVR models. Moreover, 75 sensitive wavelengths were identified to be closely associated with the leaf water content in Miscanthus. The RBF_LSSVR and RBF_NN models for predicting leaf water content, based on 75 characteristic wavelengths, obtained the high determination coefficients of 0.9838 and 0.9899, respectively. The results indicated the non-linear models were more accurate than the linear models using both wavelength intervals. These results demonstrated that visible and near-infrared (VIS/NIR) spectroscopy combined with RBF_LSSVR or RBF_NN is a useful, non-destructive tool for determinations of the leaf water content in Miscanthus, and thus very helpful for development of drought-resistant varieties in Miscanthus.
Heterogeneity of Light Availability and Its Effects on Simulated Carbon Gain of Tree Leaves in a Small Gap and the Understory in a Tropical Rain Forest1

Abstract:ABSTRACTTo clarify the small‐scale heterogeneity of light regimes in a rain forest, photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) was measured at 1‐min intervals during six days at 12 microsites in each of two plots, a small gap and an understory in Pasoh Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia. Frequency distribution of microsite PFD was unimodal with the peak value between 16 and 32 μmol/m2/sec in the small gap, but between 8 and 16 μmol/m2/sec in the understory. In the small gap, PFD was more variable among microsites; total daily PFD and daily sunfleck PFD exceeding 10 μmol/ m2/sec tended to be higher (P <0.05; t‐test) compared to those in the understory. Sunfleck PFD exceeding 50 μmol/ m2/sec, however, showed no difference between the two plots. Diffuse PFD transmittance, defined as the ratio of PFD in the forest to that measured at 43 m above ground during the periods 0800‐0810 and 1750‐1800 h, was significantly higher in the small gap than in the understory plot. Diffuse PFD transmittance was also positively correlated with microsite total daily PFD. To examine the effects of the subtle heterogeneity of light regimes on leaf carbon gain, we simulated carbon gain by sun and shade leaves in a typical shade‐tolerant species, Brosimum aticastrum Sw. (Moraceae). Despite the similarity in total daily PFD, total daily carbon gain was considerably higher in the gap than in the understory for both sun and shade leaves. This study suggests that frequency distribution of PFD is critical in describing microsite PFD regimes and determining leaf carbon gain in the tropical forest floor.

Abstract:Spatial and temporal variations of photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) measured using small photodiodes (Hamamatsu, model G1118) attached on the leaf surface of rice (Oryza sativa L.) differed with the orientation and inclination even at the same height of the canopy. Under sunny conditions, the fluctuation pattern of PFD was mainly determined by the orientation and inclination of the leaf surface, and not by the daily change of PFD in the open, e. g., high peaks of PFD were observed in the morning on east-oriented leaves, but only low peaks on north-oriented leaves. Under overcast conditions, however, the PFD on the leaf surface depended highly on the PFD in the open irrespective of the leaf orientation and inclination. The present study suggests that the orientation and inclination should be considered as the major factors influencing the PFD regime (spatial variation and daily total PFD) within the rice canopy. To determine the effects of spatial and temporal variations of PFD on crop productivity, the daily net assimilation of each leaf was estimated from the obtained data and the light-photosynthesis curve.

Abstract:Photosynthetic and growth characteristics of Mosla chinensis and M. scabra were compared at three irradiances similar to shaded forest understory, forest edge, and open land. At 25 % full ambient irradiance, M. chinensis and M. scabra had similar photosynthetic characteristics, but saturation irradiance, compensation irradiance, and apparent quantum yield of M. chinensis were higher than those of M. scabra at full ambient irradiance and 70 % full ambient irradiance. At the same irradiance treatment, specific leaf area and leaf area ratio of M. chinensis were lower than those of M. scabra . Photon-saturated photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of M. chinensis , however, were not significantly higher than those of M. scabra , and the leaf area and total biomass were lower than those of M. scabra . As a sun-acclimated plant, the not enough high photosynthetic capacity and lower biomass accumulation may cause that M. chinensis has weak capability to extend its population and hence be concomitant in the community.

Abstract:Seasonal information on photosynthetic-capacity parameters (maximum carboxylation velocity, Vcmax; and maximum rate of electron transport, Jmax) plays an important role in accurate simulation of carbon fixation in gas-exchange models. Exact inclusion of seasonal information on photosynthetic-capacity parameters into the models has been an irresolvable challenge. This paper investigated the relationships between vegetation indices (from multiple sources) and photosynthetic-capacity parameters of three beech forest stands (Fagus crenata) along an elevation gradient in the cold-temperate zone of Japan, over the entire growing season of 2006. Diverse vegetation indices were examined in terms of spectral, spatial and temporal scales; ranging from meteorological sensor-based broadband indices to hyperspectral data-based narrowband indices, to simulated MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) indices based on hyperspectral data, and finally satellite-borne MODIS vegetation indices. Regression analysis revealed that all examined indices, with the exception of the downloaded MODIS products, had significant regression relationships with photosynthetic parameters (P<0.001) when all data were pooled. Among the different indices, the simulated MODIS NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) performed the best for both Vcmax and Jmax (R2=0.81 and 0.73, respectively). Site differences were apparent, as the simulated MODIS NDVI performed the best in exponential regressions for the 550m site, while broadband NDVI performed best in exponential regression models for the 900m site. The broadband SR (Simple Ratio) in relation to Vcmax performed best with respect to a linear model, whereas the broadband NDVI with Jmax performed the best in an exponential model for the 1500m site. The results reveal that vegetation indices which are obtained across different scales nevertheless retain tight relationships with canopy-scale photosynthetic-capacity parameters. The established relationships were inversely applicable to derive seasonal trajectories of photosynthetic-capacity parameters. Thus, new insight and confidence is gained for using remotely estimated photosynthetic parameters, even though most previous research works were limited on linking of vegetation indices with biophysical parameters. The control effect of physiological capacity on reflectance and further on vegetation indices has not been adequately established and thus needs further orientation for rigorous research work.

Abstract:A light measuring system is introduced to characterize spatial and temporal variation of photosynthetic photon flux density on small scales within plant canopies. This system consists of an array of 100 gallium arsenide phosphide (GaAsP 1118), a high-speed data-logger with a maximum of 360 channels, and a portable computer. GaAsP cells, being small in size (total surface area of a single cell 5 × 6 mm), light in weight and inexpensive, make it possible to sample photon flux density simultaneously for a large number of microsites. With the high-speed data logger, the system provides a useful tool for measuring dynamics of sunflecks within plant canopies. It is easy to separate spatial and temporal components of the variation in photon flux density from the measurement using the system. A testing measurement was carried out in a tropical forest. Considerable spatial and temporal variations of photon flux density along a 50 cm transect were observed in a gap of the forest. Some potential applications of the system were also discussed.
Site fertility and the morphological and photosynthetic acclimation of Pinus sylvestris needles to light

Abstract:Morphological and photosynthetic acclimation of current-year needles to canopy gradients in light availability (seasonal mean integrated quantum flux density, Q(int)) was studied in the temperate conifer, Pinus sylvestris L., at two sites of contrasting nutrient availability. The nutrient-rich site supported a monospecific P. sylvestris stand on an old-field. The trees were approximately 30 years old and 19-21 m tall. Mean foliar N and P contents (+/- SD) were 1.53 +/- 0.11% and 0.196 +/- 0.017%, respectively. The nutrient-poor site was located on a raised bog supporting a sparse stand of 50- to 100-year-old trees, with a height of 1-2 m, and mean needle N and P contents of 0.86 +/- 0.12% and 0.074 +/- 0.010%, respectively. At both sites, needle thickness (T) and width (W) increased with increasing Qint, and leaf dry mass per unit leaf area (MA) was also greater at higher irradiance. The light effects on MA-the product of needle density (D) and volume to total area ratio (V/AT)-resulted primarily from large increases in V/AT with Qint rather than from modifications of D, which was relatively insensitive to light. Although needle morphology versus light relationships were qualitatively similar at both sites, needles were shorter, and the slopes of W, T, MA and V/AT versus light relationships were lower, at the nutrient-poor than at the nutrient-rich site, indicating that the plasticity of foliar morphological characteristics was affected by nutrient availability. As a result of lower plasticity, needles at the nutrient-poor site were narrower, thinner, and had lower MA at high irradiance than needles at the nutrient-rich site. The maximum carboxylase activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Vcmax) and the maximum photosynthetic electron transport rate (Jmax) scaled positively with foliar N and P contents. The correlations were generally stronger with P than with N, suggesting that needle photosynthetic capacity was more heavily limited by the availability of P than of N. The Jmax/Vcmax ratio was positively related to the foliar P/N ratio, indicating that Jmax was more strongly suppressed than Vcmax under conditions of low P availability. Phosphorus and N deficiency also limited the plasticity of foliar photosynthetic characteristics. There was a moderate increase in needle photosynthetic capacity of up to 1.6-fold from the bottom to the top of the canopy at the nutrient-rich site, but net assimilation rates were essentially independent of canopy position at the nutrient-poor site. Stomatal constraints on photosynthesis were similar between the sites, indicating that photosynthetic acclimation was curtailed at the biochemical level. We conclude that the foliar capacity for morphological and physiological acclimation to high light significantly decreases with decreasing nutrient availability in P. sylvestris, and that both N and P availability are potentially important determinants of foliar carbon gain capacities.
A Preliminary Study on the Photosynthetic Induction Response Ofquercus Serrata Seedlings

Abstract:To understand the sunfleck utilization of leaves in heliophilic trees within grass canopies, we studied the photosynthetic induction response ofQuercus serrata seedlings grown for 5 months in different microsites in aMiscanthus sinensis canopy. Two phases, a rapid increase in CO2 uptake and a following slow increase, were recognizabie in the time course of CO2 uptake in response to an increase of photon flux densities (PFD). When the preceding period of low light became shorter, the period of the two phases became shorter. The capacity of response to a sudden light increase was evaluated by the relative photosynthetic induction efficiency (RPIE) defined as the ratio of integrated carbon gain measured to that calculated by assuming that a steady-state assimilation would be achieved instantaneously after the light increase. RPIEs estimated were negatively related to potential sunfleck PFD of microsite. The leaves of the seedlings grown in the microsite with a lower sunfleck PFD and a shorter sunfleck duration showed a more rapid response to a sudden increase of light. These findings suggest that the leaves ofQ. serrata seedlings growing under a lower sunfleck PFD are able to increase the photosynthetic capacity more rapidly to an increase of PFD.
Seasonal Variation in Turbulent Fluxes over Tibetan Plateau and Its Surrounding Areas: Research Note

Abstract:The Tibetan field observatories, which are constructed in a project of the Japan International Co-operation Agency in 2007, provide an opportunity to establish four observation sites equipped with same sensors on and around Tibetan plateau for better understanding the monsoon climate features over the Tibetan plateau. By using same analyzing technique, the present paper examines the seasonal and diurnal variations in (1) radiation components, (2) turbulent momentum, heat, water vapor, and CO2 fluxes, and (3) soil temperature, moisture, and heat flux of the four homogenous sites (BJ at Bu-Jong (Naqu), DL at Da-Li, LZ at Lin-Zhi, and WJ at Wen-Jiang) on and around the Tibetan Plateau, in 2008. Seasonal variation in the sensible heat flux at the BJ site indicate that the sensible heat flux was stronger thereat compared with other sites in spring (March to May). After the monsoon had set, sensible heat flux decreased in all four sites. On the other hand, the seasonal variations in latent heat flux suggest that the latent heat flux increases rapidly with the water content in the soil that rises from March to June at the LZ, DL, and WJ sites. An annual cyclic pattern of CO2 flux at sites DL and WJ was obvious. Finally, At the sparsely vegetated BJ site the seasonal variation in CO2 flux was small due to the limited CO2 absorption in summer and its subsequent limited release in other seasons; and at the very grassy LZ site, the CO2 absorption responds to seasonal march of monsoon. Energy partitioning dramatically responds to the onset of monsoon at the BJ site.

Abstract:Abstract The effects of different light regimes on the survival, growth and morphology ofQuercus serrata seedlings were studied in canopies ofMiscanthus sinensis. The seedlings of various ages (0–3 yr) were grown in three light regimes: under a denseM. sinensis canopy (TG plot) receiving 2.5%–8.7% of full sunlight, under a relatively sparse canopy (SG plot) receiving 3.8%–16.1% of light and in an adjacent open site (NG plot). There was a little difference in the survival ofQ. serrata seedlings among the three plots. Height and diameter of stem and total leaf area of the seedlings were significantly lower in the shadier plots. However, the first (bottom) flush of the stem was significantly longer in the TG plot than in the NG and SG plots. Total dry weights of individual 1- and 2-yr-oldQ. serrata seedlings in the TG plot were reduced to about one-twelfth of those in the NG plot. Although the relative proportion in dry weight of each organ did not differ significantly among the plots, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area and stem height per unit dry weight were significantly higher in shadier plots. The leaf area per unit stem height was increased considerably in the sunnier plots.

Abstract:To elucidate mechanisms for tolerating sudden increases in light intensity following canopy gap formation, we investigated susceptibility to photoinhibition in the evergreen clonal plant bamboo, Sasa senanensis, and two deciduous broadleaf woody plants, Quercus mongolica, and Acer mono. We measured pre-dawn photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) in plants exposed to canopy gaps and in shade-grown plants through the month following gap formation. Photoinhibition (indicated by decreased Fv/Fm) was smallest in S. senanensis and largest in A. mono. S. senanensis had the highest area-based net CO2 assimilation rate (Aarea) and electron transport rate (ETR) under high light conditions. This species also had the highest leaf mass per area (LMA) and leaf nitrogen content per area (Narea). Higher values of LMA and Narea under shade conditions probably contribute to circumvent photoinhibition through maintenance of a higher ETR capacity. Q. mongolica, a gap-dependent species, had properties intermediate between S. senanensis and A. mono; it appeared less susceptible to photoinhibition than the shade-tolerant A. mono. None of the species examined had increased photosynthetic capacity 1 month after gap formation, indicating that shade-grown leaves were unable to fully acclimate to increased light.

Abstract:Liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF) can change the transmissible wavelength by changing the applied voltage to the filter, which enables the drastic increase in the observable wavelength resolution in a small size system and is considered to be a powerful tool for the spectral earth observation from flying units or microsatellites. However, there is limited knowledge about its season-long application for the vegetation monitoring and the prediction of the ecosystem photosynthetic capacity. We compared the seasonal variation of spectral reflectance obtained by a LCTF camera with that obtained by a popular spectral radiometer in a cool-temperate young larch plantation in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Then we tried to find the best normalized difference spectral index (NDSI) to explain the seasonal variation of the ecosystem photosynthetic capacity using all pairs of two reflectances observed in the range of wavelength between 500 and 770 nm with 10-nm intervals (28 wavelength bands) by the LCTF. The best NDSI among all combinations (28×27) of two reflectances was NDSI[770, 720] for the maximum gross primary production at light saturation and NDSI[530, 600] for the initial slope of the light-response curve, which reflect the red edge shift owing to the change in the chlorophyll content and relative strength of the light absorbance in the visible red wavelength region compared with that in the green wavelength region, respectively. Predicted daily gross primary production of the plantation using these NDSI agreed well with the observed values. NDSI[530, 600] was better to distinguish each vegetation type of the studied plantation.

Abstract:Summary Photoperiod is an environmental signal that varies predictably across the year. Therefore, the duration of sunlight available for photosynthesis and in turn the ability of plants to accumulate carbon resources also fluctuates across the year. To adapt to these variations in photoperiod, the metabolic daylength measurement (MDLM) system measures the photosynthetic period rather than the absolute photoperiod, translating it into seasonal gene expression changes linked to photoperiodic growth. In this Tansley Insight, we briefly summarize the current understanding of the MDLM system and highlight gaps in our knowledge. Given the system's critical role in seasonal growth, understanding the MDLM system is essential for enhancing plant adaptation to different photoperiods and optimizing agricultural production.

Abstract:There remains limited information to characterize the solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF)-gross primary production (GPP) relationship in C4 cropping systems. The annual C4 crop corn and perennial C4 crop miscanthus differ in phenology, canopy structure and leaf physiology. Investigating the SIF-GPP relationships in these species could deepen our understanding of SIF-GPP relationships within C4 crops. Using in situ canopy SIF and GPP measurements for both species along with leaf-level measurements, we found considerable differences in the SIF-GPP relationships between corn and miscanthus, with a stronger SIF-GPP relationship and higher slope of SIF-GPP observed in corn compared to miscanthus. These differences were mainly caused by leaf physiology. For miscanthus, high non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) under high light, temperature and water vapor deficit (VPD) conditions caused a large decline of fluorescence yield (ΦF), which further led to a SIF midday depression and weakened the SIF-GPP relationship. The larger slope in corn than miscanthus was mainly due to its higher GPP in mid-summer, largely attributed to the higher leaf photosynthesis and less NPQ. Our results demonstrated variation of the SIF-GPP relationship within C4 crops and highlighted the importance of leaf physiology in determining canopy SIF behaviors and SIF-GPP relationships.
