Abstract:The high-order moment-based method is an attractive non-intrusive approach for structural reliability analysis, while it remains a challenge to strike a balance between accuracy, efficiency, and versatility in estimating statistical moments of performance functions. In this paper, a point mapping strategy-based sparse grid integration (SGI) method is proposed for statistical moment estimation and structural reliability analysis, with improved efficiency while ensuring the accuracy. Firstly, a point mapping strategy (PMS) is developed based on the adaptive high dimensional model representation (HDMR), by which the traditional SGI is reconstructed as a sum of multiple integrations over the sparse grid point sets with different effective dimensions. With this new form of SGI, the estimation of statistical moments only requires the evaluation of the performance function at a small number of necessary reference points, once the effects of some interaction terms are negligible. The validity and feasibility of the proposed PMS-based SGI method for statistical moments estimation are verified by several numerical examples. Then, the proposed method is applied to structural reliability analysis with the aid of an improved maximum entropy method. Two engineering examples are investigated, including the strength failure problem of tubular tower K-shape connection joints and the fatigue failure problem of a marine riser resulting from the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The results indicate that the proposed method provides a better trade-off between accuracy and efficiency in evaluating the first four order statistical moments and structural failure probability compared to conventional methods.
Composite Monte-Carlo Method on Structural Failure Hyperplane

Abstract:A partly analytical composite Monte-Carlo method on structural failure hyperplane was proposed to efficiently and accurately calculate structural reliability.Samples were mapped into the structural failure hyperplane by separating and evaluating a random variable or an expression of the limit state function analytically,and then structural failure probability was estimated in combination with importance sampling method.Approaches for the original X-space and the rotated orthogonal normal V-space were presented respectively.The projection of samples into the structural failure hyperplane guarantees the sampling availability and makes the proposed method more suitable for highly nonlinear limit state function.The adoption of analytical resolution reduces the sampling dimension and makes the result more accurate and stable.Theoretical analysis and numerical examples proved the efficiency of the method.

Abstract:Reliability analysis is a widely-used tool to measure a structure’s ability of fulfilling safety and serviceability requirements. Existing methods for reliability assessment have, for the most part, been developed based on using the probability distribution functions of input random variables accounting for the uncertainties arising from both structural properties (e.g., material strength, geometry) and external loads. This paper develops a moment-based method for reliability assessment, which relies on the moment information of input variables rather than the probability distribution functions. It is shown that the proposed method is useful in solving multi-dimensional reliability assessment problems with improved efficiency compared with Monte Carlo simulation. The implementation, validity and efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated through illustrative examples.

Abstract:Failure probability function (FPF) is an important index when measuring the effect of random input distribution parameters on the safety of structures. It can decouple reliability-based design optimization. However, efficient estimation of the FPF is challenging. This study proposes a novel stochastic collocation method for estimating the FPF. The novelty of the proposed method lies in three aspects: First, an equivalent integral expression is proposed for the FPF in one-dimensional reduced space, enabling FPF estimation using an efficient stochastic collocation method. Secondly, a unified sampling density function is constructed to remove the coupling between the computational cost of FPF estimation and the number of distribution parameter realizations. Thirdly, a stochastic collocation point set is derived and shared to estimate the whole FPF using arbitrary distribution parameter realization. The proposed method is particularly suitable for the strength-stress and resistance-load models used in the field of engineering. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified by several examples.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a growing interest in analyzing and quantifying the effects of random inputs in the solution of ordinary/partial differential equations. To this end, the spectral stochastic finite element method (SSFEM) is the most popular method due to its fast convergence rate. Recently, the stochastic sparse grid collocation method has emerged as an attractive alternative to SSFEM. It approximates the solution in the stochastic space using Lagrange polynomial interpolation. The collocation method requires only repetitive calls to an existing deterministic solver, similar to the Monte Carlo method. However, both the SSFEM and current sparse grid collocation methods utilize global polynomials in the stochastic space. Thus when there are steep gradients or finite discontinuities in the stochastic space, these methods converge very slowly or even fail to converge. In this paper, we develop an adaptive sparse grid collocation strategy using piecewise multi-linear hierarchical basis functions. Hierarchical surplus is used as an error indicator to automatically detect the discontinuity region in the stochastic space and adaptively refine the collocation points in this region. Numerical examples, especially for problems related to long-term integration and stochastic discontinuity, are presented. Comparisons with Monte Carlo and multi-element based random domain decomposition methods are also given to show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:A new metamodeling approach within isogeometric analysis (IGA) scheme is proposed in this paper to implement the stochastic structural reliability analysis of shell structures. The T-spline model is applied for the low-cost computation and exact geometric representation in analysis. The spatially dependent random material properties are considered and the density-dependent spatial clustering based multi-scale support vector regression (DCMSSVR) is developed for uncertainty quantification. A Cassegrain antenna example is investigated thoroughly, the results of which demonstrate that the proposed DCMSSVR approach have great performance in estimating the statistical characteristics of concerned structural displacement and thus the structural reliability with relatively small number of training samples.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability, Ahead of Print. Traditionally, analysis requires very large number of calculations; some engineering applications in particular require time-consuming numerical efforts. Classical reliability analysis methods with combinations of surrogate models can relieve the computational burden. An active learning reliability method that combines kriging and Monte Carlo simulation has drawn a great deal of attention in recent years. However, it is often challenging to find the most suitable sample point and speed up the convergence. In this paper, a method is proposed to deal with this problem, in which two strategies are employed: an active learning method is proposed to search the most suitable sample point in a specific region using the dichotomy method; an improved convergence criterion is developed based on standard deviation to improve the convergence speed. In addition, taking advantage of the excellent characteristics of Subset Simulation, a method for dealing with small failure probability problems is proposed based on the above strategies. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approaches are tested using three numerical examples and one finite element example. Results demonstrate its accuracy.

Abstract:Structural reliability analysis is of critical importance for ensuring the safety of many engineering systems. This paper proposes an efficient structural reliability analysis method based on stochastic configuration networks (SCNs), which is constructed by learning the real performance function of the structure. In this article, two kinds of innovative surrogate models of performance function are constructed based on the trained SCNs. To improve the approximation accuracy and efficiency of SCNs for complex high-dimensional performance functions, the improved high-dimensional model representation is applied to decompose the multivariate function into a combination of several low-dimensional functions. An innovative SCN-based learning strategy is proposed to simultaneously approximate all the low-dimensional component functions. By performing Monte Carlo Simulation on the established SCN-based surrogate models, we can successfully evaluate the failure probability of many complex multi-dimensional engineering structures. The proposed SCN-based reliability analysis method provides a powerful tool for estimating the failure probability of complex multi-dimensional engineering structures. Effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of accuracy and efficiency as well as stability is demonstrated through several numerical experiments.

Abstract:Widespread uncertainty in engineering problems makes it necessary to carry out structural reliability analysis. The crude Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method can obtain accurate results, but it requires a large number of model evaluations. The Kriging-based method is a feasible way to reduce the computational cost. This study proposes a novel adaptive analysis method. Firstly, the convergence condition based on estimation accuracy is introduced. This condition focuses on the precision of the failure probability rather than the state of the points in the candidate sample pool. Then three extended U learning strategies are proposed. Sequence strategy (#1) focuses on evenly selecting samples by exploiting information on both sides of the limit state function. Strategy (#2) adopts the parallel adaptive learning technique to simultaneously select samples in both the safe and failure domains. Strategy (#3) pays attention to low-precision domains and can adaptively choose between sequential and parallel analysis modes. The choice of the three strategies can be based on the parallel computing resources available to researchers. Finally, three numerical cases and one engineering case are presented. This study provides an efficient tool for reliability evaluation of practical engineering problems.

Abstract:<p>Traditional reliability analysis is based on probability theory with precise distributions. However, determining the distribution of all variables precisely is impossible due to insufficient information. Therefore, random and interval variables may be encountered, and probabilistic reliability methods are hard to use. The existing interval variables make reliability analysis more difficult. In this paper, an efficient and robust hybrid reliability analysis method is proposed for structures with both random and interval variables. Firstly, a single‐loop procedure is proposed by performing probabilistic analysis and interval analysis simultaneously in each most probable point search process. Then an improved conjugate sensitivity factor method based on hybrid conjugate gradient direction and adaptive finite step length is developed for probabilistic analysis. Meanwhile, the hybrid conjugate gradient direction together with active set are introduced into the projected gradient method for interval analysis. Finally, a comparison analysis with six numerical examples is provided to validate the performance of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is better than the existing methods in terms of efficiency and robustness for hybrid reliability analysis with random and interval variables.</p>

Abstract:The global reliability analysis of complex engineering structures considering the correlations between basic random variables remains a challenge, especially for nonlinear correlation problems. In this work, to take into account the influence of nonlinear correlation between random variables, an enhanced high-order moment method is proposed for structural global reliability analysis. Firstly, the traditional Nataf transformation is reviewed, and the generalized Nataf transformation is presented by introducing the Copula theory. Secondly, the corresponding performance functions of global reliability problems are described uniformly by the state variable description method, and the GL 2 -discrepancy point set is developed for the high-order moments estimation and sensitivity analysis of the state variable. Thirdly, the global reliability of the structures is accurately determined by using the improved maximum entropy method (IMEM). Finally, two examples, including one static and one dynamic, are investigated to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method and the influence of nonlinear correlation between random variables on the global reliability of the structures, in which the results obtained from the proposed method are compared with Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method. The results of the examples show the nonlinear correlation between random variables has a significant impact on the global reliability of structures, and the proposed method has fairly high accuracy and efficiency for structural high-order moments estimation and global reliability analysis.

Abstract:A novel method for analyzing the reliability of structures under non-stationary stochastic seismic excitations, considering the combined effect of multiple structural demand extreme values, is proposed. The spectral representation method is employed to establish a non-stationary stochastic seismic excitation model, and based on the theory of first-passage probability, multiple integral formulas for seismic reliability under multidimensional limit states are derived. The extreme value distribution is established using the Gamma mixture model (GMM). The equations for estimating the model parameters are derived based on both fractional moments and moment-generating functions, while the determination of the number of gamma distribution components is guided by the probability distribution and statistical characteristics of the samples. The joint probability density function (JPDF) for multiple demand extreme values is established by incorporating copula functions to account for correlation, and the fitting accuracy of different copula functions is assessed. The proposed method is illustrated using reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures. The results demonstrate that the fitting accuracy of extreme value distribution can be enhanced by adjusting the number of gamma distribution components in the GMM, which exhibits high accuracy in fitting both the main and tail regions. The presence of correlation can induce variations in the JPDF, thereby exerting an influence on the failure probability. Consequently, disregarding correlation is not conducive to reliability analysis.

Abstract:An analytical moment-based method for calculating structural first failure times under non-Gaussian stochastic behavior is proposed. In the method, a power series that constants can be obtained from response moments (skewness, kurtosis, etc.) is used firstly to map a non-Gaussian structural response into a standard Gaussian process, then mean up-crossing rates, mean clump size and the initial passage probability of a critical barrier level by the original structural response are estimated, and finally, the formula for calculating first failure times is established on the assumption that corrected up-crossing rates are independent. An analysis of a nonlinear single-degree-of-freedom dynamical system excited by a Gaussian model of load not only demonstrates the usage of the proposed method but also shows the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method by comparisons between the present method and other methods such as Monte Carlo simulation and the traditional Gaussian model.

Abstract:In this paper, the eigenvalue problem with multiple uncertain parameters is analyzed by the sparse grid stochastic collocation method. This method provides an interpolation approach to approximate eigenvalues and eigenvectors’ functional dependencies on uncertain parameters. This method repetitively evaluates the deterministic solutions at the pre-selected nodal set to construct a high-dimensional interpolation formula of the result. Taking advantage of the smoothness of the solution in the uncertain space, the sparse grid collocation method can achieve a high order accuracy with a small nodal set. Compared with other sampling based methods, this method converges fast with the increase of the number of points. Some numerical examples with different dimensions are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the sparse grid stochastic collocation method.

Abstract:An improved reliability method, i.e., AL-AS-GPR-MCS, is developed taking advantage of active subspace (AS)-based dimension reduction technique, Gaussian process regression (GPR) surrogate model, active learning (AL)-based sampling strategy, and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). In this method, the AL sampling strategy and the AS-based dimension reduction are incorporated into the GPR construction, allowing that the newly added sample in each iteration can be employed simultaneously to update the identified AS of original high-dimensional space and to refine the low-dimensional GPR model over the discovered AS. The failure probability is then estimated by the MCS using the constructed GPR model. In order to verify the versatility of the proposed method, four numerical examples are investigated, involving reliability analyses of both explicit performance functions and shear frame structures with implicit performance functions. It is revealed that satisfactory accuracy enhancement and computational cost savings are achieved by the AL-AS-GPR-MCS, since it is capable of discovering the latent AS of the original high-dimensional space which alleviates the curse of dimensionality, and refining the low-dimensional GPR construction within the discovered AS by the AL sampling strategy. Therefore, the proposed method is a powerful and promising tool for dealing with structural reliability problems with strong nonlinearities and high stochastic dimensions.

Abstract:Compared with a probability model, a non-probabilistic convex model only requires a small number of experimental samples to discern the uncertainty parameter bounds instead of the exact probability distribution. Therefore, it can be used for uncertainty analysis of many complex structures lacking experimental samples. Based on the multidimensional parallelepiped convex model, we propose a new method for non-probabilistic structural reliability analysis in which marginal intervals are used to express scattering levels for the parameters, and relevant angles are used to express the correlations between uncertain variables. Using an affine coordinate transformation, the multidimensional parallelepiped uncertainty domain and the limit-state function are transformed to a standard parameter space, and a non-probabilistic reliability index is used to measure the structural reliability. Finally, the method proposed herein was applied to several numerical examples.

Abstract:The traditional reliability analysis method of structural system mainly depends on the branch and bound technology of the structure failure path,leading to that identifying the main failure mode is very difficult and the calculation work of the system failure probability is huge.In view of this,combined with the beta bound method and the joint failure probability branch bound method,a new method that could fastly and efficiently solve the structural system reliability was put forward.Firstly,the safety margin functions of structural element and the corresponding failure probability were determined by applying the structure analysis principle,and the element with the maximal value of failure probability was then removed and substituted by virtual force to form a new structure,and then the reanalysis for the new structure was carried out.The steps above was recycled until the mechanism was formed,and then the structure system reliability was finally calculated by using the failure probability of the component.The comparative analysis of the cases show that the proposed method is simple,less calculating workload,high efficient calculation accuracy and available failure path available,which is very suitable to calculate the system reliability calculation for large scale structure.

Abstract:The multi‐output structural system with implicit function widely exists in actual engineering, which refers that the multiple output responses of structural system can be obtained by one experiment or finite element simulation. Considering the correlation of multiple output responses and the small failure probability involved in multi‐output structural system, this article proposes a novel active learning Kriging (ALK) based reliability method for multi‐output structural system by combining multiple response Gaussian process (MRGP) and importance sampling (IS). First, due to the Kriging model can only construct the surrogate model under the single‐output variable, the MRGP model is introduced to substitute the Kriging model and thus the correlation in multiple output responses can be efficiently described by a correlation matrix in MRGP model. Second, for the case that the distance information of new iterated sample point is not considered by the commonly used learning functions (U‐function, EFF‐function and H‐function) in ALK, three improved learning functions are correspondingly proposed. Finally, aiming at the problem that the small failure probability leads to the increasing of candidate sample pool and further results in low computational efficiency, the IS method is combined with the MRGP model to efficiently accomplish the reliability analysis for multi‐output structural system. Several examples are also provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A new structural reliability analysis framework is developed to extend the performance of first-order reliability method, which is low robustness and poor accuracy when dealing with highly nonlinear functions. Initially, an improved conjugate sensitivity factor method is proposed to find the most probable point. The method enhances its robustness of convergence by introducing a conjugate gradient direction based sensitivity factor technique and improves its computational efficiency by putting forward a hybrid conjugate gradient factor and an adaptive step length strategy. Subsequently, the dimension reduction-based saddlepoint approximation method is developed, which uses the dimension reduction approach to construct the limit state function as the additive univariate quadratic functions and applies saddlepoint approximation to obtain the result with higher precision. A comparison analysis from five mathematical and structural examples illustrates that the proposed method is better than most existing methods in terms of robustness, efficiency and accuracy for estimating the failure probability of structures.
