Abstract:The aim of this paper is to construct a non-standard finite difference (NSFD) scheme that can be used to calculate numerical solutions for an epidemic model with vaccination. Here, the NSFD method is employed to derive a set of difference equations for the epidemic model with vaccination. We show that when , the discretized model preserves positivity and global dynamics of the continuous model. Numerical simulation illustrates the effectiveness of our results.

Abstract:An SEIV epidemic model for childhood disease with partial permanent immunity is studied. The basic reproduction number R0 has been worked out. The local and global asymptotical stability analysis of the equilibria are performed, respectively. Furthermore, if we take the treated rate τ as the bifurcation parameter, periodic orbits will bifurcate from endemic equilibrium when τ passes through a critical value. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to support our analytic results.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a numerical threshold for a coupled age-structured SIS epidemic model. We deal with the existence, convergence and stability of a linearly implicit Euler method for an age-independent SIS model firstly. It is shown that the numerical processes replicate the global dynamical behaviors of SIS model for any time-step size. We continue analyzing an age-structured SIS model similarly by introducing the numerical total population to overcome the coupling. With the help of Krein–Rutman's theorem, the numerical basic reproduction numbers and are presented, which play a decisive role in the numerical dynamical behavior of disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium. Moreover, instead of the convergence of numerical solutions, it is much more interesting that the numerical basic reproduction numbers converge to the exact ones with accuracy of order 1. Finally, numerical applications to SIS epidemic models illustrate the verification and the efficiency of our results.

Abstract:This work is devoted to the proposal and analysis of a new mathematical study of the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. First, a generalized SEIR epidemic model is presented that uses general nonlinear incidence rates to describe the 'psychological' effect. Then, a rigorous mathematical analysis is performed for the proposed SEIR model. We establish positivity and boundedness, calculate the basic reproduction number, determine possible equilibrium points (disease-free and endemic), and investigate their asymptotic stability properties of the SEIR model. The obtained results improve and extend a SEIR model constructed in a recent work; moreover, the proposed model is useful for studying the COVID-19 epidemic in particular and other infectious diseases in general. For the purpose of numerical simulation, the Mickens method is applied to construct a dynamically consistent non-standard finite difference (NSFD) model for the proposed SEIR epidemic model. The constructed NSFD scheme is able to provide reliable approximations that not only preserve the dynamic properties of the SEIR model for all values of the step size, but also are easy to implement. Finally, a series of illustrative numerical experiments are performed to support the theoretical findings and confirm the advantages of the NSFD scheme over some well-known standard methods.

Abstract:Ordinary differential equations (ODE) are a popular tool to model the spread of infectious diseases, yet they implicitly assume an exponential distribution to describe the flow from one infection state to another. However, scientific experience yields more plausible distributions where the likelihood of disease progression or recovery changes accordingly with the duration spent in a particular state of the disease. Furthermore, transmission dynamics depend heavily on the infectiousness of individuals. The corresponding nonlinear variation with the time individuals have already spent in an infectious state requires more realistic models. The previously mentioned items are particularly crucial when modeling dynamics at change points such as the implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions. In order to capture these aspects and to enhance the accuracy of simulations, integro-differential equations (IDE) can be used. In this paper, we propose a generalized model based on integro-differential equations with eight infection states. The model allows for variable stay time distributions and generalizes the concept of ODE-based models as well as IDE-based age-of-infection models. In this, we include particular infection states for severe and critical cases to allow for surveillance of the clinical sector, avoiding bottlenecks and overloads in critical epidemic situations. We will extend a recently introduced nonstandard numerical scheme to solve a simpler IDE-based model. This scheme is adapted to our more advanced model and we prove important mathematical and biological properties for the numerical solution. Furthermore, we validate our approach numerically by demonstrating the convergence rate. Eventually, we also show that our novel model is intrinsically capable of better assessing disease dynamics upon the introduction of nonpharmaceutical interventions.

Abstract:In the process of theoretical analysis of dynamic model of epidemic, using computers for simulation is also a vital research method. However, considering SIV epidemic model with impulsive vaccination and infection-age is a kind of model which has integro-differential initial-boundary value problem with pulse. Its theoretical analysis is relatively complicated. Therefore, taking advantage of implicit Euler, the low order formula of Newton-Cotes method and finite differences may lead to a new numerical simulation method. Numerical results show that this method is effective and possesses potential value of application.

Abstract:This paper presents the numerical properties of a reaction–diffusion susceptible–infected–susceptible epidemic model. Comparing with existing literature, our numerical scheme gains advantage in terms of preserving the biological meanings (such as positivity or invariance of total population) unconditionally. An implicit–explicit technique is implemented in the time integration, which ensures the numerical positivity without CFL conditions while reducing the computation complexity. The solvability, convergence in finite time and the long-time behaviors of numerical solutions are investigated. A threshold value for the long-time dynamics of numerical solutions is proposed, which is named as a numerical basic reproduction number. It is proved that the numerical disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable if and unstable if . It is presented that shares the same monotonicity and limits as the basic reproduction number of the underlying model and converges to the exact one. Some numerical experiments are given in the end to confirm the conclusions and explore the stability of the endemic equilibrium.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct and analyze nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) schemes for a computer virus propagation model. We prove theoretically that the proposed NSFD schemes preserve essential qualitative properties of the continuous model. These properties are positivity and boundedness of solutions, equilibria and their stability properties. The performed numerical simulations support the theoretical results. The numerical experiments also show that standard finite difference schemes fail to preserve the essential properties of the continuous model for large step sizes.

Abstract:Since the stochastic age-structured multigroup susceptible-infected-recovering (SIR) epidemic model is nonlinear, the solution of this model is hard to be explicitly represented. It is necessary to construct effective numerical methods so as to predict the number of infections. In addition, the stochastic age-structured multigroup SIR model has features of positivity and boundedness of the solution. Therefore, in this article, in order to ensure that the numerical and analytical solutions must have the same properties, by modifying the classical Euler-Maruyama (EM) scheme, we generate a positivity and boundedness preserving EM (PBPEM) method on temporal space for stochastic age-structured multigroup SIR model, which is proved to have a strong convergence to the true solution over finite time intervals. Moreover, by combining the standard finite element method and the PBPEM method, we propose a full-discrete scheme to show the numerical solutions, as well as analyze the error estimations. Finally, the full-discrete scheme is applied to a general stochastic two-group SIR model and the Chlamydia epidemic model, which shows the superiority of the numerical method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) method for a class of delay differential equations. We prove that, for any step size h=1/m (m∈Z+), this numerical method could intrinsically preserve the qualitative behavior of the dynamical system, including the local stability of equilibrium, the existence and the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcating periodic solution. Finally, to illustrate the analytic results, the NSFD method is used for a model of the survival of red blood cells in animals.

Abstract:We construct a non-standard finite difference (NSFD) scheme for an SIRS mathematical model of respiratory virus transmission. This discretization is in full compliance with the NSFD methodology as formulated by Mickens. By use of an exact conservation law satisfied by the SIRS differential equations, we are able to determine the corresponding denominator function for the discrete first-order time derivatives. Our scheme is dynamically consistent with the SIRS differential equations, since the conservation laws are preserved. Furthermore, the scheme is shown to satisfy a positivity condition for its solutions for all values of the time step size.

Abstract:This work deals with the relationship between a dengue disease transmission model and numerical methods for its computer simulations, viewed as discrete dynamical systems. Dynamic consistency is defined with respect to particular properties of a system and generally these properties will vary from one system to another. Here, this concept means that discretization scheme preserves correct number and stability of the equilibria, the positivity and the boundedness of the solutions for the corresponding continuous-time model. Using discrete-time analogue of Lyapunov functions, the global asymptotic stability of the equilibria is fully determined by the basic reproduction number independent of the time step size h, which is consistent with the corresponding continuous system. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate our theoretical results.

Abstract:We numerically address the stability analysis of linear age-structured population models with nonlocal diffusion, which arise naturally in describing dynamics of infectious diseases. Compared to Laplace diffusion, models with nonlocal diffusion are more challenging since the associated semigroups have no regularizing properties in the spatial variable. Nevertheless, the asymptotic stability of the null equilibrium is determined by the spectrum of the infinitesimal generator associated to the semigroup. We propose a numerical method to approximate the leading part of this spectrum by first reformulating the problem via integration of the age-state and then by discretizing the generator combining a spectral projection in space with a pseudospectral collocation in age. A rigorous convergence analysis proving spectral accuracy is provided in the case of separable model coefficients. Results are confirmed experimentally and numerical tests are presented also for the more general instance.

Abstract:An age-dependent SIR model is considered with the aim to develop a state-feedback vaccination law in order to eradicate a disease. A dynamical analysis of the system is performed using the principle of linearized stability and shows that, if the basic reproduction number is larger than 1, the disease free equilibrium is unstable. This result justifies the developement of a vaccination law. Two approaches are used. The first one is based on a dicretization of the partial integro-differential equations (PIDE) model according to the age. In this case a linearizing feedback law is found using Isidori's theory. Conditions guaranteeing stability and positivity are established. The second approach yields a linearizing feedback law developed for the PIDE model. This law is deduced from the one obtained for the ODE case. Using semigroup theory, stability conditions are also obtained. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to reinforce the theoretical arguments.

Abstract:This paper analyzes an age-group susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model. Theoretical results concerning the conservation of the total population, the positivity of the analytical solution, and the final size of the epidemic are derived. Since the model is a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), a numerical approximation is considered, based on Standard and non-Standard Finite Difference methods, and on a Modified Patankar-Runge–Kutta (MPRK) method. The numerical preservation of the qualitative properties of the analytical solution is studied. The obtained results are applied to the diffusion of information in social networks, and the effectiveness of the different numerical approaches is shown through several numerical tests on real data.

Abstract:In this work, the susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) dynamics are considered in relation to the effects on the health system. With the help of the Caputo derivative fractional-order method, the SIR epidemic model for childhood diseases is designed. Subsequenly, a set of sufficient conditions ensuring the existence and uniqueness of the addressed model by choosing proper fuzzy approximation methods. In particular, the fuzzy Laplace method along with the Adomian decomposition transform were employed to better understand the dynamical structures of childhood diseases. This leads to the development of an efficient methodology for solving fuzzy fractional differential equations using Laplace transforms and their inverses, specifically with the Caputo sense derivative. This innovative approach facilitates the numerical resolution of the problem and numerical simulations are executed for considering parameter values.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the numerical representation of the linearly implicit Euler method for an age-structured HIV infection model with a general transmission mechanism. We first define the basic reproduction number of the continuous model, and present the stability results of the equilibriums. For the numerical process, we establish the solvability of the system and the non-negativity and convergence of numerical solutions. In the analysis of the long-term dynamical behavior, this paper mainly focus on the existence of the infection equilibrium determined by the numerical reproduction number R0Δt . To overcome the difficulty caused by the complexity of epidemic transmission mechanisms, the 1-order convergence analysis of numerical basic reproduction numbers R0Δt is implemented by using the properties of the fundamental solution matrix. By a comparison principle, we show that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R0Δt<1 . Moreover, for R0Δt>1 , a unique numerical endemic equilibruim exists, which converges to the exact one, is locally asymptotically stable. Hence, numerical processes visually represent the dynamic properties of nonlinear age-structured HIV models. Finally, some numerical experiments demonstrate the verification and the efficiency of our results.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate a susceptible-infected (SI) model with the saturated treatment, the non-monotonic incidence rate, the logistic growth, and the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The global existence and the uniform boundedness of the parabolic system are performed. After that, we investigate the global stability of the disease free equilibrium (DFE) and the endemic equilibrium (EE), respectively. In the end, we give a priori estimates, some propositions of the nonconstant steady states to the elliptic system. Meanwhile, we find that the diffusion rates of the susceptible and the infected population can affect the nonexistence of the nonconstant steady states. An interesting finding is DFE and basic reproduction number do not exist when the intrinsic growth rate of the susceptible class less than the rate of susceptible individuals being vaccinated.
