Abstract:Organic charge-transfer superstructures are enabling new interfacial electronics, such as organic thermoelectrics, spin-charge converters, and solar cells. These carbon-based materials could also play an important role in spin-based electronics due to their exceptionally long spin lifetime. However, to explore these potentials a coherent design strategy to control interfacial charge-transfer interaction is indispensable. Here we report that the control of organic crystallization and interfacial electron coupling are keys to dictate external stimuli responsive behaviors in organic charge-transfer superstructures. The integrated experimental and computational study reveals the importance of chemically driven interfacial coupling in organic charge-transfer superstructures. Such degree of engineering opens up a new route to develop a new generation of functional charge-transfer materials, enabling important advance in all organic interfacial electronics.

Abstract:Supramolecular assembly utilizing noncovalent interaction to construct ordered molecular charge-transfer solids has led to significant advancement and breakthrough in energy-efficient molecular electronics, memories and solar cells. However, to exploit the coupling across these different energy regimes, the method that is capable of manipulating charge-spinlattice interactions is indispensable. Here, by rational chemical design of the supramolecular assembled charge-transfer networks, opto-ferroic properties can be coupled, in which a collective electron transfer and ordering strongly influence the dipole and spin orders, as well as their coupling. The supramolecular charge-transfer crystal presented here opens up a new route for the development of multifunctional organics that can lead to significant advancement in molecular ferronics.

Abstract:Multiferroics are materials that simultaneously exhibit more than one ferroic order parameters, such as ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism. Recently, multiferroicity has received a significant revival of interest due to the colossal magnetoelectric coupling effect for the development of nano-ferronics. In this mini-review, we focus on a recent study of ferroelectricity, magnetism and magnetoelectric coupling within the newly discovered organic charge-transfer complexes. A systemic understanding of the origin of organic ferroelectricity and magnetism is provided. Furthermore, based on the recent mechanism of the magnetoelectric coupling effect: spin-ordering-induced electric polarization and ferroelectricity-induced spin alignment, we further present the recent progress in organic charge-transfer multiferroics and metal-organic framework multiferroics. The coexistence of polarization and magnetism at room temperature of organic charge-transfer complexes will be critical for the development of all-organic multiferroics.

Abstract:Comprehensive SummaryOrganic heterostructures that can integrate the physiochemical properties of two or more substances have attracted widespread attention in the field of optoelectronics. However, the epitaxial growth process between different organic material molecules is unpredictable, and the precise synthesis of organic heterostructures is still particularly challenging. Herein, through the synergy approach of polymorphism and cocrystal engineering, a series of organic branched heterostructures have been successfully prepared. Interestingly, by simply adjusting the solvent ratio, different crystalline phases of perylene microplates can be epitaxially grown on the perylene‐OFN cocrystal microwires, which provides a feasible approach for the preparation of organic heterostructures. Meanwhile, these as‐prepared organic branched heterostructures can realize multi‐channel and multi‐color emission, and act as optical logic gates, which promotes the multifunctional integrated optoelectronics.

Abstract:Self-assembly is a bioinspired strategy to craft materials for renewable and clean energy technologies. In plants, the alignment and assembly of the light-harvesting protein machinery in the green leaf optimize the ability to efficiently convert light from the sun to form chemical bonds. In artificial systems, strategies based on self-assembly using noncovalent interactions offer the possibility to mimic this functional correlation among molecules to optimize photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and energy storage. One of the long-term objectives of the field described here as supramolecular energy materials is to learn how to design soft materials containing light-harvesting assemblies and catalysts to generate fuels and useful chemicals. Supramolecular energy materials also hold great potential in the design of systems for photovoltaics in which intermolecular interactions in self-assembled structures, for example, in electron donor and acceptor phases, maximize charge transport and avoid exciton recombination. Possible pathways to integrate organic and inorganic structures by templating strategies and electrodeposition to create materials relevant to energy challenges including photoconductors and supercapacitors are also described. The final topic discussed is the synthesis of hybrid perovskites in which organic molecules are used to modify both structure and functions, which may include chemical stability, photovoltaics, and light emission.

Abstract:Recently many efforts have been devoted to the investigation of organic nano- and micro-materials due to their unique properties and broad applications in organic field-effect transistors, organic light-emitting diodes, organic photovoltaics, photodetectors and superhydrophobic materials. In comparison with physical vapour deposition, solution processing provides a more convenient and cost-effective approach to obtain organic nano- and micro-materials with various morphologies, including wires, sheets and flowers. In this review, we use the basic concepts of supramolecular chemistry to discuss the molecular design strategy and growth mechanisms of various organic nano- and micro-structures, and their relationship with the corresponding applications.

Abstract:This study investigates a supramolecular approach to elucidate the interaction between an organic semiconducting molecule, specifically butyric acid-functionalized perylene diimide, and a block copolymer comprising poly-3-hexyl thiophene-b-polyethylene glycol. This interaction results in the formation of a precisely structured nanoarchitecture within the supramolecular block copolymer, driven by the ionic interplay between the block copolymer and small organic molecules. The optical properties of the synthesized supramolecular block copolymer were characterized by using ellipsometry. Additionally, further characterization employing atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction provided detailed insights into the crystallinity and morphology of the nanostructure. The characterization data showed that this approach significantly influenced the tuning of morphology, crystallinity, and optical and electronic properties of the resulting nanostructure. The demonstrated methodology holds considerable promise as a strategic tool for broadening the spectrum of attainable nanomorphologies in semiconducting polymers, particularly for applications in electronics or photovoltaics.

Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry protocols applied on surfaces offer compelling avenues for atomic scale control over organic-inorganic interface structures. In this approach, adsorbate-surface interactions and two-dimensional confinement can lead to morphologies and properties that differ dramatically from those achieved via conventional synthetic approaches. Here, we describe the bottom-up, on-surface synthesis of one-dimensional coordination nanostructures based on an iron (Fe)-terpyridine (tpy) interaction borrowed from functional metal-organic complexes used in photovoltaic and catalytic applications. Thermally activated diffusion of sequentially deposited ligands and metal atoms, and intra-ligand conformational changes, lead to Fe-tpy coordination and formation of these nanochains. Low-temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Density Functional Theory were used to elucidate the atomic-scale morphology of the system, providing evidence of a linear tri-Fe linkage between facing, coplanar tpy groups. Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy reveals highest occupied orbitals with dominant contributions from states located at the Fe node, and ligand states that mostly contribute to the lowest unoccupied orbitals. This electronic structure yields potential for hosting photo-induced metal-to-ligand charge transfer in the visible/near-infrared. The formation of this unusual tpy/tri-Fe/tpy coordination motif has not been observed for wet chemistry synthesis methods, and is mediated by the bottom-up on-surface approach used here.

Abstract:Understanding how chemical modifications alter the atomic‐scale organization of materials is of fundamental importance in materials engineering and the target of considerable efforts in computational prediction. Incorporating covalent and noncovalent interactions in designing crystals while “piggybacking” on the driving force of molecular self‐assembly has augmented efforts to understand the emergence of complex structures using directed synthesis. In this work, microcrystalline powders of the silver 2‐, 3‐, and 4‐fluorobenzenethiolates are prepared and their structures are resolved by small‐molecule serial femtosecond X‐ray crystallography. These three compounds enable the emergence and role of supramolecular synthons in the crystal structures of 3D metal‐organic chalcogenolates to be examined. The unique divergence in their optoelectronic, morphological, and structural behaviors is assessed. The extent of CHF interactions and their influence on the structure and the observed trends in the thermal stability of the crystals are quantified through theoretical calculations and thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract:Electrochemical stimuli have attracted much attention in recent years as they are simple, clean and can be widely applied in biological systems and material science. As one type of common guest molecules, ferrocene and its derivatives have been well studied with different host molecules, mainly including cyclodextrins, cucurbiturils, pillararenes and calixarenes. This article generally summarizes the recent work on the host-guest interactions between ferrocene derivatives and their host molecules, as well as various supramolecular systems based on these interactions. In addition, the development and outlook of electrochemical responsive systems are also discussed.

Abstract:To overcome the energy and environmental crisis, the development of efficient, sustainable photocatalysts to convert inexhaustible solar energy into chemical energy is of great significance. Due to their unique optoelectronic properties, organic electronic materials have been translated into the photocatalytic field. These emerging photocatalysts are attractive because of their metal-free nature, chemical stability, and structural diversity. However, as many small molecules fail to absorb visible light solely, incorporating them into crosslinked frameworks is found to be an effective strategy to extend the conjugation and enhance visible-light absorption. In addition, the photophysical properties of these heterogeneous materials can be adjusted through structural modification and linkage engineering. Finally, these insoluble photocatalysts exhibit good recyclability and reusability. As a representative illustration, this feature article describes recent examples of the use of two types of organic electronic materials including phenothiazine and truxene in heterogeneous photocatalytic organic transformations. The synthesis and key photophysical properties of both organic electronic material-based photocatalysts are discussed combined with specific synthetic applications. We anticipate this feature article will stimulate the implementation of more diverse organic electronic materials in the field of photocatalysis, which may lead to unprecedented synthetic applications.

Thus they have attracted more and more attentions in recent years. In comparison with traditional inorganic micro- and nano-materials, organic micro- and nano-materials possesses some merits such as unlimited choice of building blocks, low-cost, ease for large-area fabrication, and they have been applied in organic field-effect transistors, organic photovoltaic solar cells and so on. In this paper, we summarizes recent development of organic micro- and nano-materials. Abstract:There has been a surge of interest in light-driven chemical transformations using organic photoredox catalysts, whereby a suitable energy alignment and efficient exciton migration are crucial for achieving high efficiency. We show here that covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer the flexibility required to be ideal platforms for photocatalyst design, lending themselves to fine control over photoreactivity. To understand the factors that dictate photoreactivity, we explore a comparative study of a series of porous materials built with amine bonds with varied composition, crystallinity, and topology, in the efficiency of photogenerated reactive oxygen species. Combined spectroscopies, density functional theory calculations, and catalytic evaluations revealed an essential interplay among these parameters and the photoreactivity of the resulting materials. Beyond basic considerations, such as spectral absorption and crystallinity, the material's lattice symmetry has a significant impact on photoreactivity. We anticipate that the structure-performance relationships developed will provide a robust rule of thumb for designing COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:van der Waals heterostructures, composed of vertically stacked inorganic 2D materials, represent an ideal platform to demonstrate novel device architectures and to fabricate on-demand materials. The incorporation of organic molecules within these systems holds an immense potential, since, while nature offers a finite number of 2D materials, an almost unlimited variety of molecules can be designed and synthesized with predictable functionalities. The possibilities offered by systems in which continuous molecular layers are interfaced with inorganic 2D materials to form hybrid organic/inorganic van der Waals heterostructures are emphasized. Similar to their inorganic counterpart, the hybrid structures have been exploited to put forward novel device architectures, such as antiambipolar transistors and barristors. Moreover, specific molecular groups can be employed to modify intrinsic properties and confer new capabilities to 2D materials. In particular, it is highlighted how molecular self-assembly at the surface of 2D materials can be mastered to achieve precise control over position and density of (molecular) functional groups, paving the way for a new class of hybrid functional materials whose final properties can be selected by careful molecular design.

Abstract:The aromatic chromophores, for example, perylene diimides (PDIs) are well known for their desirable absorption and emission properties. However, their stacking nature hinders the exploitation of these properties and further applications. To fabricate emissive aggregates or solid-state materials, it has been common practice to decrease the degree of stacking of PDIs by incorporating substituents into the parent aromatic ring. However, such practice often involves difficultorganic synthesis with multiple steps. A supramolecular approach is established here to fabricate highly fluorescent and responsive soft materials, which has greatly decreases the number of required synthetic steps and also allows for a system with switchable photophysical properties. The highly fluorescent smart material exhibits great adaptivity and can be used as a supramolecular sensor for the rapid detection of spermine with high sensitivity and selectivity, which is crucial for the early diagnosis of malignant tumors.

Abstract:Photosynthetic organisms harness solar radiation to produce energy-rich compounds from water and atmospheric CO2 via exquisite supramolecular assemblies, which offers a design principle for highly efficient artificial photocatalytic systems. As an emerging research field, significant effort has been devoted to self-assembled supramolecular materials for photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction. In this review, we introduce the basic concepts of supramolecular photocatalytic materials. After that, we will discuss recent advances in the preparation of supramolecular photocatalytic materials from zero-dimension to three-dimension which include molecular assemblies, micelles, hybrid nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanosheets, microcrystals, lipid bilayers, supramolecular organic frameworks, supramolecular metal-organic frameworks, gels, and host-guest metal-organic frameworks, etc. Furthermore, we show the recent progress in the photocatalytic properties of supramolecular photocatalytic materials, i.e., photocatalytic proton reduction, water splitting, CO2 to HCOOH, CO2 to CO, CO2 to CH4 conversions, etc. Finally, we provide our perspective for the future research, with a focus for the development of new structures and highly efficient photocatalysis.
