Abstract:Self -assembled films of phosphonic acid on Ti6Al4V surfaces can improve the interface properties, mainly in terms of biocompatibility. In this study, different phosphoric acid films were formed on Ti6Al4V surfaces and the intermolecular forces in the films were explored by sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy due to its intrinsic sub-monolayer interfacial selectivity. With the surface and interface resonance signals ana- lysis and theoretical calculation, it is found that when the molecular polarity is the same, there is an extreme value of carbon chain length, near which van der Waals (vdW) forces can more effectively drive the self -as- sembly arrangement. However, for the phosphonic acids with polarity groups, the stronger polarity of the terminal functional groups generated the electrostatic interactions between the phosphonic acid molecules, further enhancing the distance between molecules and weakening the vdW interactions. Moreover, the new electrostatic force participated in the final molecular interactions. The synergistic effect of vdW and electrostatic forces constituted the final molecular interaction force, driving the molecular arrangement. A larger molecular interaction force results in lager inclination angles of the carbon chains, which is beneficial to resisting molecular collapse within the films. This research can be an effective guidance for improving SAMs properties.
Excellent tribological behavior of hexadecylphosphonic acid films formed on titanium alloy

Abstract:Titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surfaces are generally modified to achieve some specific surface properties to satisfy requirements of clinical medicine. In our work, hexadecylphosphonic acid (HDPA) films were successfully formed on Ti6Al4V and subsequently confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. The tribological properties of the HDPA-modified Ti6Al4V were investigated using a ball-on-disk tribometer with a linear reciprocating movement. Experimental results indicate that the HDPA-modified Ti6Al4V can maintain a low friction coefficient (approximately 0.06) for 4 h when sliding against polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) balls under a load of 0.8 N in comparison to bare Ti6Al4V (approximately 0.2); the friction coefficient of the HDPA-modified Ti6Al4V shows a 70% decline. In addition, the wear rate of PTFE balls sliding against bare Ti6Al4V was almost twenty times that of PTFE balls sliding against the HDPA-modified Ti6Al4V. Moreover, results of tribological experiments for different speeds (from 3 to 24 mm/s) and loads (from 0.8 to 3.2 N) proved that the HDPA-modified Ti6Al4V was not sensitive to both velocity and load. The friction coefficients were still low and stable even under a high load of 3.2 N or at a high speed of 24 mm/s. This indicates that this soft modification is an optional method of improving tribological properties of Ti6Al4V.
Influence of multi-interfacial structure on mechanical and tribological properties of TiSiN/Ag multilayer coatings

Abstract:The TiSiN/Ag multilayer coatings with bilayer periods of ~50, 65, 80, 115, 150, and 410 nm have been deposited on Ti6Al4 V alloy by arc ion plating. In order to improve the adhesion of the TiSiN/Ag multilayer coatings, TiN buffer layer was first deposited on titanium alloy. The multi-interfacial TiSiN/Ag layers possess alternating TiSiN and Ag layers. The TiSiN layers display a typical nanocrystalline/amorphous microstructure, with nanocrystalline TiN and amorphous Si 3 N 4 . TiN nanocrystallites embed in amorphous Si 3 N 4 matrix exhibiting a fine-grained crystalline structure. The Ag layers exhibit ductile nanocrystalline metallic silver. The coatings appear to be a strong TiN (200)-preferred orientation for fiber texture growth. Moreover, the grain size of TiN decreases with the decrease of the bilayer periods. Evidence concluded from transmission electron microscopy revealed that multi-interfacial structures effectively limit continuous growth of single (200)-preferred orientation coarse columnar TiN crystals. The hardness of the coatings increases with the decreasing bilayer periods. Multi-interface can act as a lubricant, effectively hinder the cracks propagation and prevent aggressive seawater from permeating to substrate through the micro-pores to some extent, reducing the friction coefficient and wear rates. It was found that the TiSiN/Ag multilayer coating with a bilayer period of 50 nm shows an excellent wear resistance due to the fine grain size, high hardness, and silver-lubricated transfer films formed during wear tests.
Tensile Properties and Fracture Mechanism of the Ti2AlC(0001)/TiAl(111) Interface: Insights from a First-Principles Study

Abstract:A combination of three methods, Griffith theory, work of interface separation, and first-principles tensile simulations, has been applied to uncover the Ti2AlC/TiAl interface’s tensile properties and fracture mechanisms. The results show that the three methods give consistent fracture locations when considering the interface elastic energy for work of interface separation, i.e., C-hcp-hollow-BCA fractures inside the TiAl bulk, while Al-fcc-hollow-ACB, Ti(C)-hcp-hollow-ABC, and Ti(Al)-hcp-hollow-BAC all fracture at the interface; Ti(C)-hcp-hollow-ABC has a maximum critical strain (20%) and the strongest ideal tensile strength (29.32 GPa), because it has a greater deformation energy at the inflection point and it doesn’t fracture when Ti(Al)-hcp-hollow-BAC is fully fractured, and the PDOS shape of the interface’s Ti atoms exhibits a higher degree of consistency during the tensile process, and the C atoms of the Ti2AlC-2 layer in the Ti(C)-hcp-hollow-ABC exert a strong influence on the Ti atoms at the interface; the fracture mechanism of the Ti2AlC/TiAl interface structure includes the formation of electron holes, the holes increasing, the formation of microcracks, microcracks increasing, the formation of electron depletion region due to a sharp increase in the bond length and the interlayer spacing, followed by a complete fracture.
Formation of Highly Stable Self-Assembled Alkyl Phosphonic Acid Monolayers for the Functionalization of Titanium Surfaces and Protein Patterning

Abstract:A protocol for the preparation of improved phosphonate monolayers on a titanium (Ti) substrate is presented. Zirconium ions were used to enhance the bonding between the phosphonate headgroup and the pretreated Ti surface. Contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkylphosphonic acid that formed spontaneously on Zr-mediated Ti (Zr/Ti) surfaces. The surfaces that were treated with an aqueous solution of zirconium oxychloride showed significantly enhanced stability in buffer compared with those formed directly on the native oxidized Ti. A bifunctional molecule, 10-mercaptodecanyl phosphonic acid (MDPA), was also used to form SAMs on Zr/Ti surfaces using an identical method, which enabled us to regulate the surface functionality through the terminal functional group. Protein patterning on the surface was carried out using UV irradiation through a mask to selectively degrade regions of the MDPA molecules. The surface was then backfilled with a protein-resistant molecule in the exposed regions followed by selective immobilization of proteins to the unexposed areas using a heterobifunctional linker molecule. The presented strategy significantly improved the stability of the phosphonate SAMs on oxidized Ti surfaces, which provided an ideal approach foundation for biomolecular immobilization and patterning onto the Ti surfaces. Thus, this method provided a versatile platform to activate the surfaces of biomedical Ti implants.

Abstract:<p>The Ti-45Al-7Nb-4V, Ti-45Al-7Nb-4Cr, Ti-45Al-7Nb-2V-2Cr alloy coatings were prepared on the surface of the aluminum alloy by high-velocity-air-fuel (HVAF). The surface and cross-section of three kinds of titanium aluminum alloy coatings and the micromorphology of the bonding interface between the coating and substrate were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The deformation behavior of titanium aluminum alloy particles and the phase composition of the titanium aluminum alloy coating were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDAX). The results show that the coordinated deformation between TiAl particles and Al alloy matrix is a necessary condition for the deposition of the first layer of titanium‑aluminum alloy particles. The bonding mechanism of the TiAl coating and the matrix is mechanical bonding, and there are both mechanical bonding and metallurgical bonding between spraying particles. In the process of coating deposition and formation, the β phase grains undergo coordinated deformation to form typical structures such as striped grains and circular columnar crystals. The deformation mechanism of the titanium aluminum alloy particles is the slip and kink mechanism in the grains, and the sliding and rotation mechanism of the grain boundary and the phase boundary. Adiabatic shear instability and dynamic recrystallization occurred during the formation of titanium aluminum alloy coating.</p>

Abstract:Securing high-performance bonding between metals and non-polar polymers presents a significant challenge. Existing research mainly focused on the metal surface treatments to modify the morphology and chemical components, or introducing polar groups on the non-polar polymer via complicated modifications. This study introduced a novel interface engineering strategy involving metal surface amorphization, aimed at producing a high-performance hybrid structure of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy (TC4) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for applications in artificial joint prostheses. The amorphous oxide layer grown on the TC4 surface significantly enhanced its chemical reactivity, facilitating interfacial chemical bonding between TC4 and in-situ functionalized UHMWPE during thermal-direct bonding. High-performance TC4-UHMWPE hybrid structures with lap-shear strength reaching 17.77 MPa (lap-shear force of 3732.4 N) were obtained using friction spot joining, underscoring the effectiveness of chemical bonding as the primary interfacial bonding mechanism. Meanwhile, both the chemical bonding type and the reaction mechanism were revealed with solid experimental evidence and density functional theory calculations for the first time. More importantly, the differences in bonding characteristics between amorphous and crystalline titanium oxides were revealed. This research not only deepens the understanding of interfacial bonding mechanisms and behaviors between different titanium oxides and polar groups but also provides a pioneering insight into manufacturing high-performance metal-polymer hybrid structures.
Insight into the Tribological Behavior of Liposomes in Artificial Joints.

Abstract:Liposomes are widely used in drug delivery and gene therapy, and their new role as boundary lubricant in natural/artificial joints has been found in recent years. In this study, the tribological properties of liposomes on titanium alloy (Ti6Al4 V)/UHMWPE interface were studied by a ball-on-disc tribometer. The efficient reduction of friction coefficient and wear on both surfaces under various velocities and loads is found. A multilayer structure of physically adsorbed liposomes on Ti6Al4 V surface was also observed by atomic force microscope (AFM). Except for the hydration mechanism by phosphatidylcholine (PC) groups, the well-performed tribological properties by liposomes is also attributed to the existence of adsorbed liposome layers on both surfaces, which could reduce asperities contact and show great bearing capacity. This work enriches the research on liposomes for lubrication improvement on artificial surface and shows their value in clinical application.

Abstract:The wide industrial application of titanium alloys requires lubricating materials with superior performance. Although ionic liquids have been recognized as potential choices for excellent lubricants, research on their tribological properties as applied to titanium alloys is not mature and systematic. In this work, a series of halogen-free sulfonate IL lubricants with different anions and cations were designed, synthesized, and applied to the titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) friction pairs. From the perspective of molecular structure, the influencing factors on their physicochemical properties (thermal stability, viscosity) and tribological performances (friction-reducing and anti-wear performances) were explored, including the influences derived from their active element, chain length, molecular rigidity and branched chain structure. The lubricating mechanism contributed by the IL molecules and the Ti surfaces during sliding were analyzed by means of SEM, XPS, ECR and QCM. The results showed that physical adsorption and tribo-chemical reactions were involved during the sliding process. And the lubricating performances of the synthesized ILs may largely depend on their ability to form physical/chemical adsorption films on the titanium interfaces. The rigid benzene ring structure and flexible alkyl chain are conducive to strengthening the stability and efficiency of the formed interfacial tribo-film.

Surface and interface analysis of HAP/TiO2 composite films on Ti6Al4V

Abstract:The composite films constituted of hydroxyapatite (HAP) submicron particles embedded in the gel composed of the titania nanoparticles were prepared on commercial Ti6Al4V plates with titania buffer layer obtained by a spin-coating technique. The films were annealed in air at 450 ℃, 550 ℃ and 650 ℃, respectively. The phase formation, surface morphology, andinterfacial microstructure of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission-scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis. The results show that the as-prepared films are all well-crystallized, dense,homogeneous, and there was a close interfacial bond between the film and the substrate. The results of adhesion test indicate that there is a good bonding strength between the film and the substrate. The bone-like apatite formation on the surface of the films after immersion in acellular simulatedbody fluid(SBF) validated their bioactivities.

Abstract:Electrochemically formed passive film on titanium in 1.0 M H2SO4 solution and its thickness, composition, chemical state, and local fine structure are examined by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption fine structure. AES analysis reveals that the thickness and composition of oxide film are proportional to the reciprocal of current density in potentiodynamic polarization. XPS depth profiles of the chemical states of titanium exhibit the coexistence of various valences cations in the surface. Quantitative X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis of the local electronic structure of the topmost surface (∼5.0 nm) shows that the ratio of [TiO2]/[Ti2O3] is consistent with that of passivation/dissolution of electrochemical activity. Theoretical calculation and analysis of extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra at Ti K-edge indicate that both the structures of passivation and dissolution are distorted caused by the appearance of two different sites of Ti-O and Ti-Ti. And the bound water in the topmost surface plays a vital role in structural disorder confirmed by XPS. Overall, the increase of average Ti-O coordination causes the electrochemical passivation, and the dissolution is due to the decrease of average Ti-Ti coordination. The structural variations of passivation in coordination number and interatomic distance are in good agreement with the prediction of point defect model.

Abstract:An intricate understanding of the fundamental β→α phase transformation upon the presence of metastable ω phase is vital for tailoring the multiphase microstructures of titanium and titanium alloys for various specific applications. To approach this, the structures and energetics of heterophase interfaces among α, β, and ω in titanium were thoroughly investigated, using the combination of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and first-principles density functional theory calculations. The results strongly suggest that metastable ω does not necessarily act as the precursor of α but can reduce the energy barrier for α nucleation in β. The ω/β interfaces acts as favorable nucleation sites for α which, once forms, tends to grow favorably into the β matrix. These findings validate the ω-assisted α nucleation mechanism, and adequately rationalize many TEM observations on titanium alloys.

Formation mechanism of lamellae during ¡ transformation in polycrystalline dual-phase Ti alloys

Abstract:Phase field simulations incorporating contributions from chemical free energy and anisotropic interfacial energy are presented for the beta ->alpha transformation in Ti-6Al-4 V alloy to investigate the growth mechanism of alpha lamellae of various morphologies from undercooled beta matrix. The alpha colony close to realistic microstructure was generated by coupling the Thermo-Calc thermodynamic parameters of alpha and beta phases with the phase field governing equations. The simulations show that alpha lamellar side branches with feathery morphology can form under a certain combination of interfacial energy anisotropy and temperature. alpha lamellae tend to grow slowly at high heat treatment temperature and become wider and thicker as temperature increase from 800 to 900 degrees C provided that the interfacial energy anisotropy ratio k(x): k(y) was set as 0.1: 0.6. Besides, higher interfacial energy anisotropy can accelerate the formation of alpha lamellae, and the equilibrium shape of alpha lamellae changes from rod to plate as the interface energy anisotropy ratio kx: ky vary from 0.1: 0.4 to 0.1: 0.8 under 820. C. Experiments were conducted to study the alpha lamellar side branches in Ti-6Al-4 V (Ti-6.01Al-3.98 V, wt.%) and Ti-4211 (Ti-4.02Al-2.52V1.54Mo-1.03Fe, wt.%) alloys with lamellar microstructure. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) results show that alpha lamellar side branches and their related lamellae share the same orientation. The predicted temperature range for alpha lamellar side branches formation under various interfacial energy anisotropy is consistent with experimental results. Abstract:An atomic intermixing layer, 25 nm in width, has been identified by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis at the ceramic/metal interface of a hydroxyapatite (HA) coating/titanium implant prepared by an ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) technique and post-heat-treatment process. The detailed interfacial microstructure revealed a gradient evolution of both the structure and composition of the interfacial phases from the titanium substrate to HA coatings. An enhancement of the tensile bond strength was found and was attributed to the possible chemical bonding at the ceramic/metal interface. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:The alpha/beta interface in Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo (Ti-6246) was investigated via center of symmetry analysis, both as-grown and after 10% cold work. Semicoherent interface steps are observed at a spacing of 4.5 +/- 1.13 atoms in the as-grown condition, in good agreement with theory. Lattice accommodation is observed, with elongation along [(1) over bar2 (1) over bar0](alpha) and contraction along [10 (1) over bar0](alpha). Deformed alpha exhibited larger, less coherent steps with slip bands lying in {111}(beta). This indicates dislocation pile-up at the grain boundary, a precursor to globularization during heat treatment. Atom probe tomography measurements of secondary alpha plates in the fully heat-treated condition showed a Zr excess at the interface, which was localized into regular structures indicative of Zr association with interface defects, such as dislocations. Such chemo-mechanical stabilization of the interface defects would both inhibit plate growth during elevated temperature service and the interaction of interface defects with gliding dislocations during deformation.
Designing ultra-strong and ductile hierarchical titanium alloys via interstitial solute-mediated multi-morphologic α-nanoprecipitates

Abstract:In conventional duplex titanium (Ti) alloys, the soft primary α-precipitates (α p ) are beneficial to ductility with the loss of high yield strength, while the continuous α-precipitates at grain boundaries (GBs, α GBs ) often accompanied with α precipitate-free zones (α-PFZs) renders the strain incompatibility for limited ductility. Here, to overcome this long-standing issue, we utilize interstitial (O and N) atoms to notably strengthen the α-phase, and simultaneously architect the multi-morphologic secondary α-precipitates (α s ) so as to improve the strain compatibility nearby GBs, thus develop a Ti-4.1Al-2.5Zr-2.5Cr-6.8Mo (wt.%) alloy with ultra-high yield strength of ∼1580 MPa and good ductility of ∼8.2%. The phase boundaries between the hard α-precipitates and the soft β-matrix not only act as dislocation barriers for strengthening, but also as sustainable dislocation sources for ductilizing to achieve a good combination of strength and ductility in our Ti alloys. This strategy not only sheds light on the understanding of the strength-ductility synergy of duplex Ti alloys, but also offers an available pathway to design ultra-strong and ductile alloys.

Abstract:The complex composition, size, and distribution of microstructures of titanium (Ti) alloy affect the mechanical properties of titanium alloy and its application in aerospace, ocean technology, and bioengineering. In this paper, the microstructural components and mechanical behavior of Ti80 are first investigated experimentally. According to the experimental observations of the dual-phased microstructures, a mechanism and microstructurebased constitutive model of Ti80 is established to study the quantitative relationship between mechanical behavior and equiaxed alpha(p)+ lamellar alpha(s)+ beta microstructures of titanium alloys. And the influence of dislocation evolution and accumulation on the strengthening and work-hardening of materials is also explored in detail, especially the contribution of dislocation pile-up zone at the phase boundary between a phase and beta phase on the strengthening of materials. Numerical results show that the proposed model can describe the constitutive behavior of Ti80 very well, including yield stress and strain hardening. And various strengthening mechanisms originated from the grain boundaries, phase boundaries of beta transformation structure and beta precipitation are analyzed. The proposed model is further applied to predict the constitutive behaviors of the titanium alloy with different sizes and various volume fractions of microstructure.
Highly adhesive hydroxyapatite coatings on titanium alloy formed by ion beam assisted deposition

Abstract:A compact crystalline hydroxyapatite coating on Ti–6Al–4V substrate with an atomic intermixed coating/substrate interface about 27 nm in width was synthesized by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) and a following post-treatment. The coating after post-treatment was identified by X-ray diffraction as crystalline hydroxyapatite. The interface between coatings and substrates was studied by Auger electron spectroscopy. The adhesive strength between coatings and substrates was measured by scratch tester. The results showed that the adhesive strength of IBAD coatings is nearly twice that of ion beam sputtered coatings. The study also showed that coatings prepared by IBAD eliminated the interfacial deficiencies existing in plasma-sprayed coatings.
Influence of α+β solution treatments on Ti65 ultrathin sheets: Silicide precipitation, mechanical behaviour and novel { 10 1 ̄ 1 } twinning system

Abstract:To cope with the urgent demands of the aerospace industry for lightweight and excellent high-temperature performance titanium alloy components, the microstructure evolution, silicide precipitation and mechanical behaviour of a novel high-temperature Ti65 titanium alloy ultrathin sheet with different heat treatments were systematically investigated. Submicron (Ti,Zr)6Si3 silicides are observed after solution treatments followed by air cooling, leading to a decline and significant fluctuations in tensile properties. For furnace cooling samples, (Ti,Zr)5Si3 silicide crossing grain boundaries and (Ti,Zr)6Si3 silicide near grain boundaries are observed after solution treatment at 950 °C. When the solution temperature increases to 1010 °C, the third silicide (Ti,Zr)3Si appears near dislocations. The combined effect of the strong size effect of the alloy ultrathin sheet and silicide precipitation results in great performance fluctuation, sharp drop of ductility and even brittle fracture. In addition, silicide precipitation differs little with various holding time during low-temperature solution treatment. Moreover, novel { 10 1 ¯ 1 } twins appear after the rolling process at 990 °C and are only inside coarse basal texture α grains, with an axis—angle pair of 65° 〈 8 44 ¯ 3 〉 .
