Abstract:The axion is a Goldstone par1cle resul1ng from a broken global U(1) global symmetry in the theore1cal proposal by Roberto Peccei and Helen Quinn. Their theore1cal approach cancels the anomalous CP-viola1ng term in the Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) Lagrangian, making QCD CP-conserving. Axions interact with electromagne1sm and are proposed as candidates for cold dark maKer, as well as par1cipa1ng in other phenomena, including contribu1ng to stellar cooling by their emission. In another example, axions or axion-like par1cles (alps) could explain the mystery of how ultra-high energy gamma rays, emiKed from Blazars many mega-parsecs from earth, survive pair-produc1on ex1nc1on in the background radia1on during their transit. In a series of publica1ons, Pierre Sikivie formulated the principles governing their interac1on with electromagne1sm resul1ng in many of the search techniques used to date. Yet, aRer almost forty years of experimental searches, axion dark maKer has eluded detec1on. The ar1cles presented herein represent advances in experimental techniques intended to increase the sensi1vity of axion-photon coupling of several search techniques in several axion-mass regions.Axion Haloscopes are tuned RF cavi1es that absorb increased energy when the tuned frequency matches the axion mass; they have been very successful in searching for axion/alp dark maKer in the mass range of □□□□□□mass region. More recent cosmological es1mates predict that the interes1ng mass region could be of order 10 2 □□□□□□. Sensi1vity in this mass region requires higher frequency waves and smaller resonant cavi1es. The ar1cle, "Development of axion haloscopes for high-mass search at CAPP," presents new approaches for solving the challenging problem of sensi1ve higher frequency resonant cavi1es for moving the dark-maKer axion searches to higher mass ranges.The ar1cle, "GrAHal-CAPP for axion dark maKer search with unprecedented sensi1vity in the 1-3 □□□□□□ mass range," describes a detector under design by a CNRS-Grenoble -IBS-CAPP Daejeon Collabora1on. The device's hybrid magnet has been tested up to 8.5T of the final design 9T field. This haloscope will operate in the light axion-dark maKer range, but with double-dilu1onrefrigerator cooling for noise reduc1on. While this mass range is already being covered by other experiments, this design is predicted to enter a new range of sensi1vity in axion-photon coupling. If the design results in an instrument with the design sensi1vity, it would represent an improved technique for tes1ng the DFSZ axion-model in this mass range.Haloscopes in general represent a well-established technique for searching for the axion cold dark maKer in our corner of the galaxy. While there are a number of haloscopes opera1ng already, the main goal of three of the ar1cles in this collec1on is to inves1gate new designs to increase the search sensi1vi1es. Tradi1onally, the cavi1es are tuned by introducing dielectric rods of various geometries into the tuned cavity. This introduces small distor1ons in the resonance behaviors. The ar1cle, "Split-cavity tuning of a rectangular axion haloscope opera1ng around 8.4 GHz," represents an innova1ve design to minimize the nega1ve effects suffered with conven1onal tuning methods that introduce various geometric shapes of dielectric materials into the cavity.The most sensi1ve experiment to search for axion-photon coupling was the CERN Axion Solar Telescope "CAST," which was a 10-meter 9T magnet that tracked the sun part of the day searching for axion/alps emiKed from the solar core. CAST resulted in the most sensi1ve limit on axion/alp coupling to photons to date. Many members of the CAST collabora1on formed a larger group in proposing the Interna1onal Axion Observatory (IAXO). The IAXO design has eight, 20m long magnet bores, represen1ng a giant investment; accordingly, BabyIAXO, a version with two 10-m magnets to be located at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, was proposed and approved. It is designed to test all IAXO systems and will increase the sensi1vity of axion-photon coupling significantly. One of the cri1cal components is the low-background x-ray detectors called Micromegas gas-filled 1me projec1on chambers to record the x-rays from solar axions converted to photons in the magne1c field of one of the magne1cs. The background in the detector would be a serious threat to sensi1vity. The ar1cle, "Background discrimina1on with a Micromegas detector prototype and veto system for BabyIAXO," describes experimental efforts to test the backgrounds in the detectors of the type that will be used in the actual axion searches.The applica1on of haloscopes to search for cold dark maKer axions has been described in three other ar1cles in this collec1on. Several developments in sensi1vity improvement have been described.
