Abstract:A modified quasi-quantum treatment (MQQT) of molecular scattering has been developed to account for the softness of the repulsive part of the anisotropic atom-molecule PES. A contour of the PES is chosen such that the barrier height is just large enough to reflect the incoming kinetic energy, directed anti-parallel to the hard shell normal at the site of impact. The resulting rotationally inelastic quantum state resolved DCSs and ICSs of He + NO(X) at E-col = 508 cm(-1) are compared to those obtained from regular QQT and from quantum mechanically exact calculations performed on the full highest quality ab initio Vsum PES. The MQQT parity changing DCSs for Delta j <= 4 exhibit much better agreement with the QM DCSs than is obtained using regular QQT, particularly in the forward scattered direction. The improvements upon the remaining MQQT DCSs with respect to the regular QQT were minor, due to the near incompressible hard shell character of the n not equal 1 or 3 anisotropic Legendre polynomial terms of the PES.
A General Scaling Rule for the Collision Energy Dependence of a Rotationally Inelastic Differential Cross-Section and Its Application to NO(X) + He.

Abstract:The quasi-quantum treatment (QQT) (Gijsbertsen et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 8777) provides a physically compelling framework for the evaluation of rotationally inelastic scattering, including the differential cross sections (DCS). In this work the QQT framework is extended to treat the DCS in the classically forbidden region as well as the classically allowed region. Most importantly, the QQT is applied to the collision energy dependence of the angular distributions of these DCSs. This leads to an analytical formalism that reveals a scaling relationship between the DCS calculated at a particular collision energy and the DCS at other collision energies. This scaling is shown to be exact for QM calculated or experimental DCSs if the magnitude of the (kinematic apse frame) underlying scattering amplitude depends solely on the projection of the incoming momentum vector onto the kinematic apse vector. The QM DCSs of the NO(X)-He collision system were found to obey this scaling law nearly perfectly for energies above 63 meV. The mathematical derivation is accompanied by a mechanistic description of the Feynman paths that contribute to the scattering amplitude in the classically allowed and forbidden regions, and the nature of the momentum transfer during the collision process. This scaling relationship highlights the nature of (and limits to) the information that is obtainable from the collision-energy dependence of the DCS, and allows a description of the relevant angular range of the DCSs that embodies this information.
On Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory for Rotationally Inelastic Scattering of Identical Collision Partners

The treatment of two molecules as indistinguishable includes symmetrization of rotational wavefunctions, introduces exchange parity, and gives state-to-state transition matrix elements different from those in the straightforward treatment of molecules as distinguishable. Moreover, the treatment of collision partners as indistinguishable is eight times faster. Numerical results, presented for $H_2 + H_2$, CO + CO and $H_2O + H_2O$ systems, indicate good agreement of MQCT calculations with full-quantum calculations from literature and show that an a posteriori correction, applied after the treatment of collision partners as distinguishable, generally produces good results that agree well with the rigorous treatment of collision partners as indistinguishable. This correction for cross section includes either multiplication by 2, or summation over physically indistinguishable processes, depending on the transition type. After this correction, the results of two treatments agree within 5% for most but may reach 10-20% for some transitions. At low collision energies dominated by scattering resonances these differences can be larger, but they tend to decrease as collision energy is increased. It is also shown that if the system is artificially forced to follow the same collision path in the indistinguishable and distinguishable treatments, then all differences between the results of two treatments disappear. This interesting finding gives new insight into the collision process and indicates that indistinguishability of identical collision partners comes into play through the collision path itself, rather than through matrix elements of inelastic transitions.

Abstract:The quantum state-to-state rotationally inelastic quenching of N2O by colliding with a He atom is studied on an ab initio potential energy surface with N2O lying on its vibrational ground state. The cross sections for collision energies from 10−6–100 cm−1 and rate constants from 10−5–10 K are calculated employing the fully converged quantum close-coupling method for the quenching of the j = 1–6 rotational states of N2O. Numerous van der Waals shapes or Feshbach resonances are observed; the cross sections of different channels are found to follow the Wigner scaling law in the cold threshold regime and may intersect with each other. In order to interpret the mechanism and estimate the cross sections of the rotational energy transfer, we propose a minimal classical model of collision between an asymmetric double-shell ellipsoid and a point particle. The classical model reproduces the quantum scattering results and points out the attractive interactions and the potential asymmetry can affect the collision process. The resulting insights are expected to expand our interpretations of inelastic scattering and energy transfer in molecular collisions.

Abstract:Quantum close-coupling computations of the rotational quenching of H-2 and its isotopologues due to He impact a re performed using a highly accurate potential energy surface. State-to-state cross sections are obtained in a wide range of collision energies between 10(-5)cm(-1 )and 10(-4)cm(-1), and the th eoretical rate coefficients are reported for temperatures ranging from 10(-4) K to 3000 K. Compared with previous studies, the well depth of the potential adopted in this study is larger, leading to stronger resonance effects in the cross sections of He-HD. The accurate potential was employed to investigate the isotope effects of H-2 in detail. The cross-section resonances shift towards lower collision energies and become stronger with increasing reduced mass. The calculated cross sections and rate coefficients of H-2 and its isotopic variants in collisions with He are provided to study the energy transfer in these systems.

Abstract:The integral cross sections and rate constants of pure rotational and ro-vibrational energy transfer processes for the Ar-HF system are thoroughly studied by using the time-independent close coupling method based on our newly constructed potential energy surface. Compared to previous theoretical results, pure rotational transitions in this work achieve better agreement with the experimental data. For ro-vibrational energy transfer, it is found that quasi-resonant transitions dominate the cross sections in all cases. Furthermore, the vibrational-resolved rate constant of transition v=1→v=0 increases very quickly with the temperature from 100 K to 1500 K and is also in good agreement with the available experimental results.

Abstract:This paper describes a dynamical Lie algebraic method that we have developed in the application of the theory of Alhassid and Levine [Phys. Rev. A 18 (1978) 89] to rotationally inelastic molecule-surface scattering. Transition probabilities and their dependence on main dynamics variables of the collision system can be given analytically. An application of the method to direct rotationally inelastic scattering of NO molecules from a static, flat Ag(lll) surface is made. Calculations performed for this model system yield snapshots of the probability current density and those of the rate of change of probability density that provide an insight into the intimate details of the scattering dynamics in time. Abstract:We present state-to-state differential cross sections for rotationally inelastic collisions of vibrationally excited NO X2Π (ν = 9) with Ar using a near-counterpropagating molecular beam geometry. These were obtained using the stimulated emission pumping technique coupled with velocity map imaging. Collision energies well over ~1 eV were achieved and rotational excitations up to ~ Δj = 60 recorded for the first time for inelastic collisions. This allowed us to investigate scattering of a diatomic molecule in a 2Π state which is initially well described by Hund's case (a) into final states well described by Hund's case (b) as the rotational level splitting becomes larger than the spin-orbit splitting. Differential cross sections for both parity-changing and parity-conserving collisions exhibit very similar structures at the high collision energies. Quantum scattering calculations have been carried out to obtain approximate integral cross sections, which confirm the high rotational excitation. These studies will take the arena of rotationally inelastic collisions to a new regime while providing insight into dynamics in extreme non-equilibrium conditions. Furthermore, these present a unique challenge to both quantum and quasiclassical scattering calculations to validate the methods and the potential energy surfaces used to assess their applicability in extreme conditions.

Abstract:We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of rotationally inelastic transitions of OH, prepared in the X-2 Pi, v = 0, j = 3/2 F(1)f level, in collisions with molecular hydrogen (H-2 and D-2). In a crossed beam experiment, the OH radicals were state selected and velocity tuned over the collision energy range 75-155 cm(-1) using a Stark decelerator. Relative parity-resolved state-to-state integral cross sections were determined for collisions with normal and para converted H-2. These cross sections, as well as previous OH-H-2 measurements at 595 cm(-1) collision energy by Schreel and ter Meulen [J. Chem. Phys. 105, 4522 (1996)], and OH-D-2 measurements for collision energies 100-500 cm(-1) by Kirste et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 042717 (2010)], were compared with the results of quantum scattering calculations using recently determined ab initio potential energy surfaces [Ma et al., J. Chem. Phys. 141, 174309 (2014)]. Good agreement between the experimental and computed relative cross sections was found, although some structure seen in the OH(j = 3/2 F(1)f -> j = 5/2 F(1)e) + H-2(j = 0) cross section is not understood. Abstract:A full-dimensional time-independent quantum mechanical theory for ro-vibrationally inelastic scattering of triatomic molecules with atoms is formulated. The Jacobi-Radau coordinate system used in the calculation allows not only a near perfect description of the vibrational problem but also the adaptation of the exchange symmetry for A(2)B type triatoms. The S-matrix elements are obtained by solving the close-coupling equations with contracted basis using the log-derivative method. This method is applied to the inelastic scattering of the water molecule by a chlorine atom, which sheds light on the energy gap law in energy transfer in atom-triatom collisions.

Abstract:The close coupling calculation of rotationally inelastic collision of Ne with LiH is first performed.A recently computed ab initio potential energy surface is employed.State-to-state differential,partial and integral cross sections are calculated.The influence of the long-range attractive and the short-range anisotropic interaction on the inelastic scattering dynamics are discussed in detail.The results in case of 500 cm~(-1) collision energy shows: ① A perfect compensation between the short-range anisotropic,which is predominantly repulsive,and the long-range attractive interaction and cancel each other out result in a pronounced minimum in the opacity function.This minimum approximately divide potential surface into two parts mentioned above.② both long-range attractive and short range anisotropic interaction are found to contribute to inelastic excitation of the low rotational states.In fact,for Δj=1 and 2,long-range attraction is the important but not exclusive excitation mechanism.Specially,attractive interactions are responsible for about 30% of the integral cross sections for Δj=1 excitation.As for Δj≥3,whereas,scattering is dominated by short-range(repulsive and the attractive) interaction as if the long-range attraction hardly matter. It is of advantage to Δj=1 transition for Ne atom closing to the LiH molecule from the Li-side in the manner of approximate collinearity,and advantage to higher Δj excitation for striking from Jacobi angle 90°.③The differential cross sections for transitions with low Δj are concentrated below 30° center-of-mass scattering angles.For Δj=2～4 it show prominent impact parameter rainbow but present the characteristic of rotational rainbow for Δj=6,7.Long-range attraction contribution to the angle distribution is only below 10° scattering angles for Δj=1 and 2.Short-range interaction appears approximately pure repulsion for Δj=1,whereas presents the important influence of its attractive components besides its repulsive components for excitation Δj≥2.

Abstract:Rotational quenching of LiH by Ne at low energy is first studied using the close coupling approach. At incident energies below 10-4 cm-1, the inelastic quenching cross sections are found to be inversely proportional to the velocity of the incoming Ne atom in agreement with Wigner threshold law, and the elastic cross sections are found to tend to constant limiting values. For a given energy, the total quenching cross sections decrease in general with increasing initial j. In the energy range Ej=0.01-100 cm-1 the elastic and inelastic cross sections show more complicated oscillational behaviors than other studied systems, due to the stronger anisotropy and two attractive wells of the interaction potential. The calculations show the quenching rate coefficients attain their values of the order of 10-11 cm3 s-1 at zero temperature limiting. For j=7 the rate coefficient presents upturn structure.

Abstract:The state-to-state differential cross sections of rotational excitation at incident energy 64.0meV and elastic,inelastic and total differential cross sections are calculated for He atom collision with ground state N_2 molecule by employing accepted exact close-coupling approximation method at incident energy of 27.3,40.0,64.0 and 80.0meV,respectively.Then the changing regularities of differential scattering cross sections are summed up.It shows by investigation that elastic scattering takes place mainly at small angle,at the same time,inelastic scattering of rotational excitation chiefly at large angle while low-energy scattering for He-N_2 system.
Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory for Rotational Energy Exchange in Symmetric-Top-Rotor + Linear-Rotor Collisions and a Case Study of $ \rm ND_3 + \rm D_2$ System

Abstract:The extension of mixed quantum/classical theory (MQCT) to describe collisional energy transfer is developed for symmetric-top-rotor + linear-rotor system type and is applied to $ \rm ND_3 + \rm D_2 $. State-to-state transition cross sections are computed in a broad energy range for all possible processes: when both $ \rm ND_3$ and $ \rm D_2$ molecules are excited or both are quenched, when one is excited while the other is quenched and vice versa, when $ \rm ND_3 $ state changes its parity while $ \rm D_2 $ is excited or quenched, and when $ \rm ND_3 $ is excited or quenched while $ \rm D_2 $ remains in the same state, ground or excited. In all these processes the results of MQCT are found to approximately satisfy the principle of microscopic reversibility. For a set of sixteen state-to-state transitions available from literature for collision energy $ \rm 800 cm^{-1} $ the values of cross sections predicted by MQCT are within 8% of accurate full-quantum results. A useful time-dependent insight is obtained by monitoring the evolution of state populations along MQCT trajectories. It is shown that, if before the collision, $ \rm D_2 $ is in its ground state, the excitation of to $ \rm ND_3 $ rotational states proceeds through a two-step mechanism in which the kinetic energy of molecule-molecule collision is first used to excite $ \rm D_2 $ and only then is transferred to the excited rotational states of to $ \rm ND_3 $. It is found that both potential coupling and Coriolis coupling play important roles in $ \rm ND_3 + \rm D_2 $collisions.

A new potential energy surface for vibration–vibration coupling in HF–HF collisions. Formulation and quantal scattering calculations

Abstract:We present new ab initio calculations of the HF–HF interaction potential for the case where both molecules are simultaneously displaced from their equilibrium internuclear distance. These and previous ab initio calculations are then fit to a new analytic representation which is designed to be efficient to evaluate and to provide an especially faithful account of the forces along the vibrational coordinates. We use the new potential for two sets of quantal scattering calculations for collisions in three dimensions with total angular momentum zero. First we test that the angular harmonic representation of the anisotropy is adequate by comparing quantal rigid rotator calculations to those carried out for potentials involving higher angular harmonics and for which the expansion in angular harmonics is systematically increased to convergence. Then we carry out large-scale quantal calculations of vibration–vibration energy transfer including the coupling of both sets of vibrational and rotational coordinates. These calculations indicate that significant rotational energy transfer accompanies the vibration-to-vibration energy transfer process.

Abstract:A crossed beam velocity-map ion-imaging appratus has been used to determine differential cross sections (DCSs) for rotationally inelastic scattering of NO(A 2 Σ + , v = 0, j = 0.5) with CO 2 , as a function of both NO(A, v = 0, N ′) final state and the coincident final rotational energy of the CO 2 . The DCSs are dominated by forward-peaked scattering for all N ′, with significant rotational excitation of CO 2 , and a small backward scattered peak is also observed for all final N ′. However, no rotational rainbow scattering is observed and there is no evidence for significant product rotational angular momentum polarization. New ab initio potential energy surface calculations at the PNO-CCSD(T)-F12b level of theory report strong attractive forces at long ranges with significant anisotropy relative to both NO and CO 2 . The absence of rotational rainbow scattering is consistent with removal of low-impact-parameter collisions via electronic quenching, in agreement with the literature quenching rates of NO(A) by CO 2 and recent electronic structure calculations. We propose that high-impact-parameter collisions that do not lead to quenching experience strong anisotropic attractive forces that lead to significant rotational excitation in both NO and CO 2 , depolarizing product angular momentum while leading to forward and backward glory scattering

Differential Cross Sections for Pair-Correlated Rotational Energy Transfer in NO(A2Σ+) + N2, CO, and O2: Signatures of Quenching Dynamics

Abstract:A crossed molecular beam, velocity-map ion-imaging apparatus has been used to determine differential cross sections (DCSs), as a function of collider final internal energy, for rotationally inelastic scattering of NO(A2Σ+, v = 0, j = 0.5f1) with N2, CO, and O2, at average collision energies close to 800 cm-1. DCSs are strongly forward scattered for all three colliders for all observed NO(A) final rotational states, N'. For collisions with N2 and CO, the fraction of NO(A) that is scattered sideways and backward increases with increasing N', as does the internal rotational excitation of the colliders, with N2 having the highest internal excitation. In contrast, the DCSs for collisions with O2 are essentially only forward scattered, with little rotational excitation of the O2. The sideways and backward scattering expected from low-impact-parameter collisions, and the rotational excitation expected from the orientational dependence of published van der Waals potential energy surfaces (PESs), are absent in the observed NO(A) + O2 results. This is consistent with the removal of these short-range scattering trajectories via facile electronic quenching of NO(A) by O2, in agreement with the literature determination of the coupled NO-O2 PESs and the associated conical intersections. In contrast, collisions at high-impact parameter that predominately sample the attractive van der Waals minimum do not experience quenching and are inelastically forward scattered with low rotational excitation.
QUASICLASSICAL TRAJECTORY STUDY OF PRODUCT POLARIZATIONS IN THE H(2S) + NH → N(4S) + H2 REACTION

Abstract:Based on the DMBE potential surface of the 4 A ″ ground-state, the product rotational polarizations in the title reaction are studied by using quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculation method. Three angular distributions of P(θr), P(Φr), P(θr, Φr) and the four polarization-dependent differential cross sections (PDDCSs) were calculated for the collision energy range of 1–20 kcal/mol. The results revealed that the product is backward-scattering and the product rotational angular momentum j′ is aligned and oriented. With the increment of collision energy, the degree of the product alignment and orientation is enhanced, showing the collision energy-dependent behaviors of the product polarizations.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the impact of rotation on the thermodynamic characteristics of QCD matter using the three-flavor NJL model. We examine the temperature, quark chemical potential, and angular velocity dependencies of key thermodynamic quantities, such as the trace anomaly, specific heat, speed of sound, angular momentum, and moment of inertia. As the main finding of our analysis, we observe that the speed of sound exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior as the angular velocity changes.
