Abstract:The configuration of marine towing cable changes significantly during the turning process, with the rotating procedure with fixed cable length being the most frequent. To overcome these challenges, the configuration and dynamic properties of the marine towing cable must be addressed. However, under some particular operating situations, the tugboat must release the marine towed cable during rotation, resulting in a constant change in the length of the marine cable. In view of this, the towed cable is discretized into a lumped mass model based on the lumped mass method, and the dynamic analysis model of the rotation process of towed cable with variable length under different release speeds and different depths is established. This is done with reference to the specific parameters of a towed system, combined with the specific sea conditions of a particular sea area. Time-domain coupling analysis is used to determine the dynamic changes in configuration and stress of marine towing cable at various release speeds and depths. The results of the calculations have some guiding relevance for a certain engineering practice.
Influence of changes of Rayleigh damping coefficient on dynamic vibration response of towed cable during rotation process in towed system

Abstract:The marine towed system is a typical rigid-flexible multi-body system.It should be pointed out that up to now,the damping effect on dynamics of marine towed cable system has not been fully considered in most of the studies.However,in the structural dynamic analysis of marine towed system,especially in the dynamic response analysis of towed cable rotation process,the damping effect cannot be ignored.The modal characteristics of the cables are also highly complex due to damping.In order to study the influence of Rayleigh damping on the rotation process of towed cable,with the basis of the lumped mass method,the expression form of Rayleigh damping in towed cable system is further sorted and decomposed,and the influence of each damping component is summarized.Some general conclusions are obtained,which have certain guiding significance for actual towing operation at sea.
Hydrodynamic Response of Ocean-Towed Cable-Array System under Different Munk Moment Coefficients

Abstract:The ocean towing system plays an important role in the ocean development process. The motion of a towed body is closely coupled with the motion of a towing cable. In this paper, the lumped mass method is used to discrete a towing cable into a lumped mass model. At the same time, on the basis of some assumptions, the relationship between the expression of Munk moments in the classical towed body kinematics and the expression of the Munk moments in the hydrodynamic analysis software OrcaFlex is established. Based on the above assumptions and the derivation, combined with the specific parameters of a certain sea state and a certain towing system, the dynamic simulation of the towing system is made by OrcaFlex. By changing the different Munk moment coefficients, the real-time response of the cable tension and the towed underwater body under different Munk moments is achieved. The effects of different Munk moment coefficients on the change of the tension are obtained; the six degrees of freedom of the towed body under the action of different Munk moment coefficients are shown. To obtain the spectral density of the six degrees of freedom of the towed body under the action of different Munk moment coefficients, Fast Fourier Transform is performed on the calculated results of the towed body in the time domain. The results provide a theoretical basis for the optimal design of a cable and towed body.

Abstract:The trawl system plays an irreplaceable role in deep-sea fishing. In the towing process of the trawl system, many complex mechanical phenomena occurs, so it is necessary to analyze the dynamic response of the deep-sea trawl system during the towing process. In this paper, an equivalent mathematical model for predicating the movement of the ocean trawl system is established based on the equivalent net theory. In the proposed method, the lumped mass method is used to simulate the towed cable and some lines with hydrodynamic characteristics are used to simulate the fishing net. The effects of towing speeds on the dynamic characteristics of a rigid truss trawl system and a flexible trawl system during straight-line towing and rotation towing are studied. The results show that it is possible to simulate trawl motion, and the trawling process is well-presented using this equivalent mathematical model. The disadvantage of this method is also obvious, that is, it cannot simulate trawls with a large number of meshes because the proliferation of mesh numbers can lead to difficult computational convergence. The results also demonstrate that during straight-line towing, the higher the speed, the greater the tension of the cable. Due to the rigid truss, the shape of the rigid truss trawl under different towing speeds is not much different, while the shape of the flexible trawl system changes greatly. During rotating towing, the tension of the cable changes abruptly in the initial stage, and then fluctuates periodically in the time domain. With the increase of towing speed, the overall outward floating distance of the trawl increases gradually. This study has a certain reference and guiding role for deep-sea fishing operations.

Abstract:In order to explore changing conditions of the motion characteristics of towed vehicles and cable configuration during towing ship turning maneuvers,the mathematical model of two-part towed system is established using lumped mass method.The change rule of motion state of the two towed vehicles is analyzed using simulation method,and the cable configuration at both transient and steady state is obtained The result shows that the turning radius and towing speed of the towing ship has great influence on the depth change and steady properties of both towed vehicles during 360° steady-state and a single 360° turning maneuver.Turing radius and depth of the two towed vehicles changes greatly when mother ship turns at a small radius and large towing speed,which should be paid special attention.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new numerical simulation method for analyzing the parametric vibration of stay cables based on the theory of nonlinear dynamic response of structures under the asynchronous support excitation. The effects of important parameters related to parametric vibration of cables, i.e., characteristics of structure, excitation frequency, excitation amplitude, damping effect of the air and the viscous damping coefficient of the cables, were investigated by using the proposed method for the cables with significant length difference as examples. The analysis results show that nonlinear finite element method is a powerful technique in analyzing the parametric vibration of cables, the behavior of parametric vibration of the two cables with different Irvine parameters has similar properties, the amplitudes of parametric vibration of cables are related to the frequency and amplitude of harmonic support excitations and the effect of distributed viscous damping on parametric vibration of the cables is very small.

Abstract:As the demand of marine resources is continuously growing, more and more people are focusing on the study of underwater towed system for marine survey, in which mastering and predicting the dynamic characteristic of the system is the key problem. Based on the parameters of a certain underwater system, combined with the lumped mass method, the underwater cable-body 3D motion mathematical model has been established by OrcaFlex, in which the variation of the tension of the towed cable and the variation of the depth of the towed body have been given and the effect of the towed speed on critical radius in the process of the 360 rotary motion has been discussed. The results show a good agreement with previous research results. At the same time, we also make a research on the effects of the change of the hydrodynamic coefficients and the parameters of towed cable on variation of the tension and towed depth. These studies can provide a basis for the selection of cable in the system.

Abstract:This paper aims to research the cable-lead-in rod effect on a towed system through mathematical modeling and numerical simulations. The rod dynamics, as a key part of this study, is modeled using the combination of cable node governing equations and kinematic constraint conditions. As the first attempt to analyze such a problem, the rod is simply treated as an elastic cable segment so as to be incorporated into the dynamics of the cable, and a set of algorithm is then proposed based on the kinematic constraint conditions to fully describe its motions. Meanwhile, the cable and the underwater vehicle are modeled by the traditional lumped mass method and the 6 degree-of-freedom maneuverability equations for submarines respectively; the coupling boundary conditions besides the rod dynamics are also given to form the whole system’s model. Several numerical cases are performed to investigate the rod effect on the system in different maneuver situations. Some meaningful conclusions are drawn through comparative analysis.

Abstract:A semi-active optimal control method for the parametrically excited instability of stay cables is developed based on the LQR control and the Bingham model of MR dampers, and the instability of controlled inclined stay cables under support motions is studied through the cable structure and control factor effects. The partial differential equation of the parametrically excited transverse vibration of a controlled inclined stay cable with sag under support motions is derived by using two transformations of displacements and converted into ordinary differential equations for the cable mode vibration according to the Galerkin method. The optimal control law is obtained by applying the linear quadratic regulation control method to the multi-degree-of-freedom cable system and matched with the MR damper dynamics to determine the semi-active optimal control force. Then the unstable regions of the parametrically excited vibration of the controlled cable are calculated by using the direct numerical approach based on the generalized eigenvalue analysis and revised through numerical simulation to illustrate more effective stability or large-amplitude vibration suppression. The influences of the cable structure parameters and control factors on the parametrically excited instability are analyzed based on large numerical results in terms of unstable regions and minimum parameter-excitation amplitude. The parametrically excited instability of the cable vibration is noticeably affected by decreasing the inclination angle close to the support-motion direction and increasing the time delay in control over a certain value, which effects need to be taken into account for the cable instability control.
Simulation of the dynamic retrieval process of a towed target system under towing airplane’s wake and atmospheric turbulence

Abstract:This paper studies the dynamic retrieval process of a towed target system under perturbation by simulating the reel-in operation under the towing airplane’s wake and atmospheric turbulence. To settle the computational problem of cable tension, the constant-length method is proposed to transform this variable-mass problem into a constant-length problem based on a mass-spring model that discretizes the cable. A three-dimensional atmospheric turbulence field is built using a recursive function to model the complex perturbation field along the cable. A horseshoe vortex model is adopted to simulate the towing airplane’s wake. Simulation analysis shows that both the reel-in speed and turbulence significantly affect the retrieval deviation, whereas the airplane’s wake has little influence. The reel-in speed should be chosen in concert with the turbulence intensity to achieve a high retrieval success rate. Moreover, a higher reel-in speed is preferred to maintain cable strain and smoothen the process when the retrieval tolerance is satisfied.

Abstract:Base on MMG(Ship Maneuvering Model Group) mathematical model and the catenary model of towing rope,a set of maneuvering motion equations of the towing system which consists of one tow vessel,one towing rope and one towed vessel is given.Maneuvering motion simulation of the towing system was carried out by numerical calculation.The items of the simulation include motions when the towing system changing course and the vessel suffered small disturbance.By simulation,the factors such as towing rope length,towing speed and towing point position which effect towing system performance are studied.Also,the influence of water depth on towing system,i.e.shallow water effect,and the method for improving course stability by changing the PD control parameters are preliminarily discussed and some useful conclusions are obtained.

Abstract:The effect of variable-length towed cable on the motion of the secondary towed vehicle should be taken into consideration during its deployment. In order to predict the motion state of the secondary towed vehicle during deploying stage and obtain the position of it and the configuration of towed cable precisely and timely, an upgraded Lagrangian method is adopted. The movement of towed cable's particles in the stages of both deploying and fixed-length is described. By the using of lumped-mass method, the kinetic model of the two-part underwater towed vehicle system is built. The towed cable configuration and the motion response of the secondary towed vehicle are calculated at different towing and deploying speed. Simulation results show that both towing speed and deploying speed have remarkable influence on the configuration and tension of towed cable and the motion state of towed vehicle, and the calculating results would also provide a theoretical basis to forecast the motion state of towed vehicle.

Abstract:As an important premise of the design of underwater towed cable real-time control strategy,the study on the dynamic characteristics of underwater towed cable is crucial.Due to the towed cable is usually about thousands of meters long,using computational simulation technology to study cable brings benefits on the cost and the efficiency of the study.In this paper,a three dimensional dynamic towed cable model is established on the basis of the classic model set by Ablow and Schechter[1].The model was solved in generalized-α algorithm.By programming,the simulation of dynamic characteristics of towed cable in towed boat' s speed changing motion and heaving motion is accomplished,which contribute to the further study on control strategy of towed cable.

Abstract:Marine towing cable is a crucial equipment of the underwater towing system which can acquire the marine resources distribution in the sea. The marine towing cable will experience nonlinear dynamic problems due to the vortex shedding and vessel motion during the towing movement. In order to investigate the dynamic response characteristics of the towing cable during the working process, a set of experimental devices for towing cable is designed and a PPR (Polypropylene-Random) pipe with the aspect ratio of 150 is tested with coupled uniform towing and vessel motion. The characteristics of response amplitude and frequency under uniform towing are compared and analyzed comprehensively with different towing speeds and towing depths. The key characteristics of nonlinear dynamic response under vessel motion are then discussed. Some phenomena involving multi-modal participation, frequency transition and amplitude modulation are captured. The vessel motion will excite wCT -wT, wCT + wT, wT frequency components in the CF (cross-flow) direction which may be caused by the parametric excitation, and wave frequency wT dominates the IL (in-line) direction response. Some extreme motion conditions may enlarge the response displacement in the IL and CF direction. It is suggested that the vessel motion should be taken into account in the evaluation of the nonlinear dynamic analysis of marine towing cable.
Dynamic Simulation of A Multi-Cable Underwater Towed System

Abstract:In this paper, a numerical method for dynamic simulation of a multi-cable underwater towed system is proposed. The system consists of a tow cable, a towed body and two arrays. The equations of motion for cables are based on Ablow and Schechter (1983) and the six-degree-of-freedom ordinary differential equations are used in analyzing motion of a towed body. The boundary conditions of the system are derived. The numerical scheme is based on a finite difference method. A number of runs are simulated including maneuvers such as turns and sudden velocity changes. The results show that the numerical method is stable in the whole range of simulation and effective in predicting the motion of a multi-cable underwater towed system.

Abstract:The optimal control of self-excited oscillation of an inclined taut cable with multi-modes under wind loading is studied.The nonlinear equations of motion are derived for the cable with control and wind forces.The partial differential equation for transverse cable vibration is obtained and converted into ordinary differential equations by using the Galerkin method,that describe the self-excited oscillation of the multi-mode system.Then based on the dynamical programming principle,the HJB equation is established and the optimal nonlinear control force is determined.The analytical solutions of the controlled system in self-excited oscillation are obtained by using the averaging method.The analytical and numerical results show that the proposed control can effectively suppress the self-excited oscillation of the cable.

Abstract:The semi-active optimal control for the parametrically excited instability of a stay cable subjected to a support motion excitation was investigated.The multi-degree-of-freedom parameter-excitation vibration equations of the cable are established.An optimal control law is determined according to the dynamical programming principle.Then the semi-active optimal control force and its implementing condition are obtained in terms of the Bingham model of MR dampers.The influences of the control force bound,control time-delay and system observation error on controlling the cable instability are analyzed.Numerical results show that the semi-active optimal control can enhance the stability of the parametrically excited cable very much.The time-delay in control beyond a critical value will cause the cable completely unstable.

Abstract:New types of high-speed and near surface towing technology are getting attentions, and the prospect of adopting a high-speed small craft as the towing ship for towed system has been studied recently. The paper aims to investigate the effect of the towed cable on the dynamic behavior of the high-speed towing planing hull. In order to gain a better understanding of the effect of the stern towing force induced by the drag cable on the hydrodynamic performance of the planing hull, especially in the condition that the volume-Froude number is not larger than 3.0, the resistance, attitude and motion of a planing hull with and without towing force is investigated by model test in the condition of calm water and regular waves of different wave heights, and the effect of stern towing force is analyzed. The flow phenomena around the hull in calm water and the accelerations of the hull in regular waves are studied. It is found in the model test that, the planing hull's resistance could be reduced by the stern towing force around the velocity condition at which the volume-Froude number is close to 3.0. The motion of the planing hull is not obviously influenced by the towing force, but the accelerations are susceptible to the towing force.

Abstract:The discrete cable dynamics model is established in the paper based on the bending moment balance and FEM discrete element method.By the discrete linearization processing,the nonlinear dynamics problem is transformed into linear equations about angle accelerations.The towing system stable configuration is obtained by solving the linear equations via time iteration with the initial state of the towed cables.In the case of heave motion of the mother ship which has coupling influence on the underwater towed cables,the cable steady state will be disturbed and the towed forces will change so that the system may be in danger.Considering the impacts of random waves on the mother ship,the motion parameters and tension response of the cable are gained by MATLAB simulation calculating the towing system.The results offer references to the towed systems in real operations.

Abstract:A direct numerical approach for solving the instability problem of multi-degree-of-freedom dynamic systems with general period-parameter excitation is developed based on the Floquet theory, Fourier series and generalized eigenvalue analysis. The developed direct numerical approach to the instability is applied to an inclined stay cable with sag under periodic two-support-motion excitation. The partially differential equation for the parametrically excited vibration of the cable is derived by using the transformation of displacements and converted into ordinary differential equations according to the Galerkin method. The unstable regions for parametrically excited vibration of the damped cable system with multi-degree-of-freedom are obtained to illustrate its overall instability. The effects of each mode vibration and parameters of the cable on the unstable regions are analyzed. The developed direct numerical approach to the parametrically excited instability is applicable to more general periodic parameter-excited systems.
