Abstract:In this paper, we reported a simple strategy for synthesizing well-defined TiO2NTs-Au@Pd hybrid nanostructures with prior TiO2 nanotube functionalization (F-TiO2NTs). TiO2NTs with larger surface area (BET surface area is 184.9m(2)g(-1)) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the NTs are anatase phase with a range of 2-3μm in length and 30-50nm in diameter after calcined at 400°C for 3h. 3-Aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane (APTMS) as a coupling agent was reacted with the surface hydroxyl groups as anchoring sites for flower-shaped bimetallic Au@Pd nanostructures, self-assembling amine functionality on the surface of TiO2NTs. Note that two faces at the interface between F-TiO2NTs with (004) plane and Au@Pd nanostructures with (111) one of cubic Au and Pd nanoparticles are compatible, benefiting to the charge transfer between two components due to their crystalline coordination. The results showed that as-prepared F-TiO2NTs-Au@Pd hybrid nanostructures modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits high electrocatalytic activity toward hydrazine (N2H4) at low potential and a linear response from 0.06 to 700μM with the detection limit for N2H4 was found to be 1.2×10(-8)M (S/N=3). Based on scan rate effect during the hydrazine oxidation, it indicates that the number of electrons transferred in the rate-limiting step is 1, and a transfer coefficient (α) is estimated as 0.73. The self-assembled F-TiO2NTs-Au@Pd hybrid nanostructures as enhanced materials present excellent electrocatalytic activity, fast response, highly sensitive and have a promising application potential in nonenzymatic sensing.
Electrochemical sensors based on platinum-coated MOF-derived nickel-/N-doped carbon nanotubes (Pt/Ni/NCNTs) for sensitive nitrite detection

Abstract:As excess nitrite has a serious threat to the human health and environment, constructing novel electrochemical sensors for sensitive nitrite detection is of great importance. In this report, platinum nanoparticles were deposited on nickel-/N-doped carbon nanotubes, which were obtained through a self-catalytically grown process with Ni-MOF as precursors. The as-prepared Pt/Ni/NCNTs were applied as amperometric sensors and presented superior sensing properties for nitrite detection. Benefiting from the synergy of Pt and Ni/NCNTs, Pt/Ni/NCNTs displayed much wider detection ranges (0.5–40 mM and 40–110 mM) for nitrite sensing. The sensitivity is 276.92 μA mM −1 cm −2 and 224.39 μA mM −1 cm −2 , respectively. The detection limit is 0.17 μM. The Pt/Ni/NCNTs sensors also showed good feasibility for nitrite sensing in real samples (milk and peach juice) analysis. The active Pt/Ni/NCNTs composites and facile fabrication technique may provide useful strategies to develop other sensitive nitrite sensors.

Abstract:Depositing composites of Ni-HHTP and MWCNTs on a glassy carbon electrode(GCE) have developed a sensitive and facile electrochemical sensor for nitrite detection. Ni-HHTP@MWCNTs composites were synthesized in situ using 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP), nickel acetate tetrahydrate Ni(OAc)2·4H2O and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by hydrothermal method. The composite electrode was prepared by the coating method. The synergistic combination of Ni-HHTP and MWCNTs enables the electrode to possess fast electronic conductivity and generate sensitive electrochemical signals for sodium nitrite (NaNO2). The controlled variable approach determines the best test conditions for the analyte and obtains a susceptible response signal. The composite electrode has an extensive linear response range of 1-10000 μM to NaNO2, with a detection limit of 0.95 μM and sensitivity of 0.96 mA·mM−1·cm−2, which shows excellent reproducibility and stability performance. There were no interferences from the most common ions. The electrochemical analysis method towards nitrite detection in actual water samples with a recovery rate was 97.2% -103.7%, indicating this composite material's practical application potential. The mechanism of the specific electrochemical process on the modified electrode was also explored. This work preliminary explored new electrochemical sensors for high-precision nitrite detection and precise sensing in analysis tests.

Abstract:An efficient non-noble metal eletrocatalyst, nickel hydroxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (Ni(OH)(2)/sr-GO), is synthesized in the absence of reductants and alkali by a simple one-step solvothermal method. The morphology, structure, and composition of the Ni(OH)(2)/sr-GO nanocomposite is characterized by various analytical techniques like scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The Ni(OH)(2)/sr-GO nanocomposite is then used to construct a nonenzymatic amperometric sensor for highly sensitive detection of nitrite. The result shows that the Ni(OH)(2)/sr-GO nanocomposite possesses superior electrocatalytic ability toward nitrite. The electrochemical performance of the Ni(OH)(2)/sr-GO is evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, chronocoulometry, and cyclic voltammetry. Under the optimal conditions, the electrochemical sensor for nitrite detection exhibits a linear range from 0.1 to 663.6 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.07 mu M (S/N=3). In addition, the sensor provides favorable selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, and can be successfully applied for the detection of nitrite in spiked water samples. Recoveries range between 95 and 108 %.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) decorated bimetallic CuNi-based hollow nanoarchitecture (CNHN) are reported for the first time as a nonenzymatic sensor for the quantification of nitrite in neutral solution . The CNHN was prepared via a convenient calcining routine using the bimetallic CuNi-MOFs as a coprecursor. The unique chemical structure of hollow CNHN with high specific surface area and abundant terminal amino groups effectively avoid the aggregation of AuNPs and facilitate the subsequent adsorption of nitrite. The Au/CNHN exhibited high electrocatalytic activity towards nitrite oxidation due to the synergetic catalytic effect of AuNPs and CNHN. Chronoamperometric detection of nitrite at the Au/CNHN/GCE achieved a lower linear calibration range of 0.05 to 1.15 mM, with an LOD of 0.017 μM compared with previous reports. The proposed method obtained satisfactory recoveries for nitrite determination in practical applications, which was verified by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The prepared sensor based on Au/CNHN featured favorable selectivity and stability, which provides a promising approach for real sample analysis.

Abstract:We describe a highly sensitive and selective amperometric sensor for the determination of nitrite. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with a composite made from gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and sulfonated graphene (SG). The modified electrode displays excellent electrocatalytic activity in terms of nitrite oxidation by giving much higher peak currents (at even lower oxidation overpotential) than those found for the bare electrode, the AuNPs-modified electrode, and the SG-modified electrode. The sensor has a linear response in the 10 μM to 3.96 mM concentration range, a very good detection sensitivity (45.44 μA mM −1 ), and a lower detection limit of 0.2 μM of nitrite. Most common ions and many environmental organic pollutants do not interfere. The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of nitrite in water samples, and the results were found to be consistent with the values obtained by spectrophotometry. Abstract:An ultrasensitive and high-performance electrochemical nitrite sensing platform based on gold nanoparticles deposited on poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride)-decorated MXene (Ti3C2Tx) (AuNPs/Ti3C2Tx-PDDA) was constructed. AuNPs/Ti3C2Tx-PDDA on the surface of electrode displayed synergetic catalytic effect for oxidizing NO2‾ originating from especially catalytic activity of AuNPs, large area and excellent conductivity of Ti3C2Tx, as well as electrostatic interaction of PDDA. The amperometry technique was employed for quantitative determination of nitrite, in which the AuNPs/Ti3C2Tx-PDDA/GCE sensing platform showed outstanding linear relationship in 0.1–2490 μM and 2490–13490 μM for nitrite, meanwhile the detection limit of 0.059 μM. Besides, the prepared sensor possessed high sensitivity of 250 μA mM−1 cm−2 yet excellent selectivity, stability and reproducibility. Furthermore, this platform also exhibited satisfactory feasibility of nitrite sensing in running water and ham sausage sample. This work would broaden a facile approach to construct high sensitivity electrochemical sensing platform via two-dimension materials and its nanocomposites.

Bone graft materials in fixation of orthopaedic implants in sheep.

Abstract:Bone graft is widely used within orthopaedic surgery especially in revision joint arthroplasty and spine fusion. The early implant fixation in the revision situation of loose joint prostheses is important for the long-term survival. Bone autograft has been considered as gold standard in many orthopaedic procedures, whereas allograft is the gold standard by replacement of extensive bone loss. However, the use of autograft is associated with donor site morbidity, especially chronic pain. In addition, the limited supply is a significant clinical challenge. Limitations in the use of allograft include the risk of bacterial contamination and disease transmission as well as non-union and poor bone quality. Other bone graft and substitutes have been considered as alternative in order to improve implant fixation. Hydroxyapatite and collagen type I composite (HA/Collagen) have the potential in mimicking skeletal bones. The osteoconductive properties of the composite might be improved by adding bone marrow aspirate (BMA), which can be harvested during surgery. Other alternatives to bone graft are demineralised bone matrix (DBM) and human cancellous bone (CB). DBM is prepared by acid extraction of human bone and includes bone collagen, morphogenetic proteins and growth factors. The combination of DBM with CB and with allograft might improve the healing potential of these grafts around non-cemented orthopaedic implants and thereby the implant fixation. Study I investigates the effect of HA/Collagen composite alone and in combination with BMA on the early fixation of porous coated titanium implants. In addition, the study compares also the effect of autograft with the gold standard allograft. By using a sheep model, the implants were inserted in the trabecular bone of femoral condyles. The test biomaterials were placed in a well defined peri-implant gap. After the observation period, the bone-implant specimens were harvested and evaluated mechanically by a destructive push-out test and analyzed histologically qualitatively and quantitatively. Study II investigates the effect of DBM alone and in combination with CB or allograft. The control group in study I and II was allograft. Study III is a methodological study and investigates the potential systematic bias by applying the traditional sampling method, which includes evaluating the mechanical fixation by using the superficial part and the histological analysis by using the profound part of the implant. The implants in this study were inserted in the proximal humerus and only allograft was used in the peri-implant gap. In study I, the mechanical testing showed failure by the preloading in the composite group with and without BMA. There were no bone ongrowth and sparely bone formation in the gap by the composite group. Adding BMA to the composite has no beneficial effect on implant fixation. No significant difference between autograft and allograft on mechanical fixation, bone ongrowth and bone formation. In study II the combination of DBM with CB or allograft showed no significant differences on the mechanical testing and histological analysis to the control group, whereas DBM alone showed significant low mechanical fixation, low bone ongrowth and low bone formation. Study III showed no significant difference between the sampling methods. In conclusion, HA/Collagen composite alone or in combination with BMA has no effect on the early fixation of porous coated titanium implants. Autograft has comparable effect on allograft with regard to early implant fixation. The combination of DBM with CB may represent an alternative to allograft. In study III, mechanical testing and histological analysis can be applied either from the superficial or the profound part of the implant. By applying the histological analysis from the superficial part and the mechanical testing from the profound part, an extra section is required.
Detection of Nitrite Based on Ni/Ag/MWNTs Modified Electrode

Abstract:A Ni/Ag/multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified electrode was fabricated by electrodeposit method and ionic liquids ( ILs) was used to increase the electrical conductivity. This electrode was used to detect nitrite in drinking water. This modified electrode showed an obvious electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of nitrite, and a response on low concentration of NO-2 . The response of current was linear with the concentration of nitrite from 1 μmol · L-1 to 0. 05 mmol·L-1 , and the limit of detection was 4. 6 × 10-7 mol · L-1 . In addition, this modified electrode exhibited excellent stability and repeatability, and was applied to detect nitrite in real sample with a satisfactory result.
Mesoporous CoOx/C Nanocomposites Functionalized Electrochemical Sensor for Rapid and Continuous Detection of Nitrite

Abstract:Nitrite is widespread in the environment, and is frequently used as an additive to extend the shelf life of meat products. However, the excess intake of nitrite can be harmful to human health. Hence, it is very important to know and control the content of nitrite in foodstuffs. In this work, by the means of self-assembly induced by solvent evaporation, we used the amphiphilic PEO-b-PS diblock copolymers resol and cobalt nitrate as a template to synthesize ordered mesoporous CoOx/C nanocomposites. Then, the CoOx/C nanocomposites were modified on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which showed excellent sensitivity, good selectivity, and a wide detection range for nitrite. Through cyclic voltammetry and current–time techniques, the electrochemical performance of the GCE modified with CoOx/C nanocomposites was analyzed. Under the optimized conditions, we found that anodic currents were linearly related to nitrite concentrations with a regression equation of lp (μA) = 0.36388 + 0.01616C (R2 = 0.9987) from 0.2 μM to 2500 μM, and the detection limit was 0.05 μM. Furthermore, the electrochemical sensor behaved with high reproducibility and anti-interference ability towards various organic and inorganic ions, such as NO3−, SO42−, Cl−, COOH− (Ac−), Na+, K+, Mg2+, and NH4+. Our results indicated that these CoOx/C nanocomposites could be applied in electrochemical sensors for the rapid and sensitive detection of the food preservative nitrite.

Abstract:To develop simple and sensitive electrocatalytic technique for toxic nitrite determination is significantly important. Electrochemical nitrite sensor has attracted tremendous attention owing to its high sensitivity, selectivity and short response time. Here, we report the highly sensitive nitrite sensor based on poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA)-coated Fei.833 (OH)(0.5)O-2.5-decorated N-doped graphene (NG) ternary hierarchical nanocomposite (Fe-1.833(OH)(0.5)O-2.5/NG@PDDA). Differing from complicated synthetic routes for the reported ternary systems, the Fe-1.833(OH)(0.5)O-2.5/NG@PDDA composite can be effectively constructed by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The electrochemical performance of Fe-1.833 (OH)(0.5)O-2.5/NG@PDDA composite film modified glassy carbon electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and amperometric techniques. The experimental results indicate that synergistic effect of Fe-1.833(OH)(0.5)O-2.5 as catalytic center, NG as conductive platform and PDDA as nitrite adsorbent can significantly enhance the electrochemical response. The fabricated sensor exhibits the excellent analytical performance for nitrite detection linearly over two different concentration ranges, which are from 0.1 to 347 jiM and from 347 to 1275 p,M with a detection limit of 0.027 p.M (S/N=3). The value is very much comparable to the recent literature ones. Moreover, the proposed electrochemical sensor also shows good stability, reproductivity and excellent anti-interference ability against metal ions and electroactive species, and exhibits satisfactory recovery for detecting nitrite in drinking water. Formation of PtCuCo Trimetallic Nanostructures with Enhanced Catalytic and Enzyme-like Activities for Biodetection

Abstract:The unique enzyme-like properties of metal nanoparticles (NPs) hold great promise for chemical and biomedical applications; implementation relies on improvements in their catalytic efficiency. We have constructed PtCuCo nanostructures using hydrothermal treatment of Co3O4, Cu2+, and Pt2+ in aqueous solutions, resulting in PtCuCo trimetallic alloy NPs having hollow structures, as confirmed by TEM, XRD, XPS, and EDS analyses. These PtCuCo NPs are capable of oxidizing 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-benzidine (TMB) in either the absence or presence of hydrogen peroxide, suggesting efficient peroxidase- and oxidase-like activity. These NPs could also catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH4. We believe that the combination of Pt and oxidized Cu and Co species results in surfaces with rich active sites possessing a wide range of electronic variation, which promotes both generation of hydroxyl radicals and electron transfer. Consequently, the catalytic capabilities of our PtCuCo NPs are greater than those of either Pt or PtCu NPs. Building upon the peroxidase-like activity of PtCuCo NPs, we developed a colorimetric method not only capable of specifically detecting glucose, but also able to detect rongalite and HS-, on the basis of the inhibitory effect of these substances upon PtCuCo nanoperoxidase.

Abstract:A novel electrochemical sensor was prepared using N-doped carbon mesoporous materials supported with nickel nanoparticles (Ni–NCs) for environmental p-nitrophenol (p-NP) detection in a specific geographical area. These as-prepared Ni–NCs were dispersed in polyethyleneimine (PEI) solution and modified onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for electrocatalytic reduction of p-NP. The Ni–NCs-PEI/GCE showed a high Faraday current at −0.302 V during p-NP reduction, because of the synergistic effect between Ni–NCs and PEI. Under ideal conditions, the Ni–NCs-PEI/GCE was used in the voltametric determination of p-NP, with high sensitivity. The linear ranges for p-NP are 0.06–10 μM and 10–100 μM with low detection limit (4.0 nM) and high sensitivity (1.465 μA μM−1 cm−2). In the presence of other phenolic compounds, this sensor showed good selectivity for p-NP detection. The Ni–NCs-PEI/GCE was also used to determine p-NP in environmental water samples of a specific geographical area, with recoveries ranging from 95.9% to 109.4%, and an RSD of less than 3.6%. Therefore, this novel Ni–NCs-PEI/GCE provides a good example for the design of other carbon-based nanocomposite materials, for electrochemical detection of trace p-NP in a specific geographical area.

Abstract:Nitrite exists in the natural environment widely and is often used in human daily life. It causes varying degrees of harm to the water ecosystem and human health when the nitrite concentration exceeds the standard. Therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable nitrite detection methods. Compared with others, the electrochemical method for detecting nitrite has a series of advantages such as easier, lower cost, and faster analysis. The present research on the detection of nitrite by electrochemical methods focuses on the modification of electrodes. Numerous studies have shown that the addition of precious metals can increase the electronic transfer rate and the electrocatalytic active sites of the electrode, significantly improving the catalytic oxidation ability of the modified electrode for nitrite. This article reviews the research progress of precious metals (Au, Pd, Ag, Pt) in the preparation of nitrite electrochemical sensors in the past 10 years, including the application of single metal nanomaterials and bimetal or alloy materials. The performance and advantages of precious metal nanomaterials in the development of nitrite electrochemical sensors are discussed in detail. CdS/TiO2 Nanocomposite-Based Photoelectrochemical Sensor for a Sensitive Determination of Nitrite in Principle of Etching Reaction

Abstract:The CdS/TiO2 nanocomposite (NC) photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was constructed based on a new sensing strategy for nitrite assay. The CdS etching process caused by nitrite-in-acid solution was confirmed and applied to nitrite sensing. The CdS etching phenomenon occurring on the sensor led to an obvious reduction in the photocurrent response under visible-light irradiation, which responded to the nitrite concentration. The CdS/TiO2 NC-based PEC sensor exhibited excellent performance on nitrite detection. The linear range for nitrite determination was from 1-100 and 100-500 μM, and the sensitivity of the PEC sensor was 2.91 and 0.186 μA μM-1 cm-2, respectively. The detection limit of the sensor was 0.56 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the PEC sensor was also equipped with advantages such as good selectivity, excellent stability, low background, and recyclability. Satisfying results were obtained for the nitrite assay in real samples by such a PEC sensor. In summary, this work contributed a fresh idea to precisely determinate nitrite through PEC sensing.

Abstract:Pt-based electrochemical ammonia-nitrogen sensors played a significance role in real-time monitoring the ammonia-nitrogen concentration. The alloying of Pt and transition metals was one of the effective ways to increase the detectability of the sensitive electrode. In this paper, a self-supported electrochemical electrode for the detection of ammonia nitrogen was obtained by the electrodeposition of PtNi alloy nanoleaves on a carbon cloth (PtNi-CC). Experimental results showed that the PtNi-CC electrode exhibited enhanced detection performance with a wide linear range from 0.5 to 500 μM, high sensitivity (7.83 μA μM−1 cm−2 from 0.5 to 150 μM and 0.945 μA μM−1 cm−2 from 150 to 500 μM) and lower detection limit (24 nM). The synergistic effect between Pt and Ni and the smaller lattice spacing of the PtNi alloy were the main reasons for the excellent performance of the electrode. This work showed the great potential of Pt-based alloy electrodes for the detection of ammonia-nitrogen.

Abstract:Nanozymes have emerged as the forefront of research in analytical sensing due to their promising applications. In this study, we utilized polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified Pichia pastoris residue to synthesize microbial-based palladium nanocomposites (Pd/MMR) through simple in-situ reduction methods. The dispersed active sites of Pd nanoparticles with a size of 2.12 ± 0.49 nm that were supported by microbial biomass provided excellent oxidative enzyme-mimicking activity to Pd/MMR. The catalytic mechanism of Pd/MMR involved the combined action of 1 O 2 , ·OH, and · O 2 – , and possible reaction pathways and corresponding energy barriers were also revealed using DFT calculations. We also established a quantitative detection platform for nitrite using Pd/MMR. The platform could detect nitrite at concentrations of 10–300 μM with a detection limit of 0.27 μM, and was successfully applied to detect nitrite in real samples. These findings serve as a reference for the synthesis and application of metal nanocomposites using microorganisms.

Abstract:The synthesis of rare earth oxide based Dy2O3-AuNPs nanocomposites via solvothermal and in-situ reduction method for the electrochemcial oxidation of nitrite on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with high catalytic activity has been reported. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis absorption and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical behavior of the Dy2O3-AuNPs modified GCE was investigated. The effect of pH value on the response current of the sensor was examined. The fabricated enzyme-free sensor achieved a wide linear range of 0.01 similar to 1.0 mmol . L-1 with the detection limit of 3.3 mu mol . L-1. The linear regression equation is Ipa (mu A) = 6.70 + 51.1 C (mmol . L-1) with the square of correlation coefficient R-2 = 0.965. Furthermore, the sensor exhibited the excellent selectivity and reproducibility. When employed for the real sample analytical application, it owned appropriate recovery of nitrite in water samples, indicating the potential application in real sample analysis. Abstract:Novel N-doped carbon nanotube/polyaniline/Au (N-CNT/PANI/Au) composite nanotubes with an average diameter about 60 nm were synthesized. The morphology, composition, optical properties, and conductivity of the resulting composites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorption spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetric experiments indicated that this nanocomposite showed excellent redox ability not only in acidic solution but also in neutral solution. Based on the good biocompatibility, the higher conductivity and excellent redox ability, a H2O2 sensor was constructed and the corresponding electrochemical properties were investigated in detail. The results confirmed that N-CNT/PANI/Au possessed an excellent catalytic activity toward the redox reaction of H2O2 at low reduction and oxidation overpotential. The biosensor exhibited good reproducibility, stability and a super highly sensitive response to H2O2 with a detection limit of 1.4 mu M. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
