Abstract:Background Sulfonamides (SAs) are a class of synthetic antibacterial agents that are diffusely used in the medical industry and animal husbandry. Their prevalence in the influents and effluents of water treatment plants, as well as in rivers and groundwater, has provoked worldwide concern. Monitoring SAs in environmental water is of great significance for public health. However, most of the available detection techniques for SAs are cumbersome and time-consuming. With the increasing number of actual samples, simple, fast and environmentally friendly analytical methods are always in demand. Results Herein, we describe a highly efficient micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) sample preparation technique based on a novel thiol and ionic liquid bi-functional nanofibers membrane (IL-SH-PAN NFsM) for multi-residue detection of sulfonamides (SAs) in water samples. By the synergistic effect of -SH and -IL, the as-prepared IL-SH-PAN NFsM demonstrated high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity for SAs. The water samples can be directly used for μ-SPE without pH and ionic strength adjustment, and the eluent can be directly collected for HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Compared with other methods reported in the literature, this method required much shorter extraction time (2 min for a batch), much less amount of adsorbent (4.0 mg) and organic solvent (0.5 mL), while providing much higher sensitivity (1.4–3.9 ng L −1 ), and fine recoveries (88.8%–117.7%) with relative standard deviations less than 4.26%. Significance and novelty A bi-functional nanofibers membrane was prepared for efficient extraction of SAs. The adsorbent exhibited superior adsorption performance and excellent selectivity. The underlying interaction mechanisms derived from -SH and -IL were proposed, which provide a new idea for preparing versatile adsorbents. Rapid, efficient and sensitive detection of SAs in water was achieved. The novel sample preparation technique can be expected as an efficient method for routine trace SAs residue monitoring in various water samples.

Abstract:In this study, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were grown in situ on magnetic nitrogen-doped graphene foam (MNGF), and the resulting composite of COFs-modified MNGF (MNC) was wrapped by molecularly imprinted polymers (MNC@MIPs) for specifically capturing SAs. A magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method for SAs was established using MNC@MIPs with good magnetic responsiveness. The adsorption performance of MNC@MIPs was superior to that of non-molecularly imprinted polymers (MNC@NIPs), with shorter adsorption/desorption time and higher imprinting factors. A high-efficiency SAs analytical method was developed by fusing HPLC and MNC@MIPs-based MSPE. This approach provides excellent precision, a low detection limit, and wide linearity. By analyzing fish samples, the feasibility of the approach was confirmed, with SAs recoveries and relative standard deviations in spiked samples in the ranges of 77.2-112.7 % and 2.0-7.2 %, respectively. This study demonstrated the potential use of MNC@MIPs-based MSPE for efficient extraction and quantitation of trace hazards in food.

Abstract:In this study, we designed a molecularly imprinted polymers-dispersive solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography (MIPs-DSPE-HPLC) method, as a simple and efficient platform for the sensitive detection of two sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) of sulfamethoxine (SMM) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) in environmental water samples. Using SMM and SMZ as templates, methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent, and azodiisobutyronitrile as the catalyst, the dual-template molecularly imprinted polymers (dt-MIPs) were successfully synthesized via surface imprinting technology and multi-template imprinting strategy. The adsorption properties of the prepared MIPs were characterized, and the adsorption capacities of MIPs towards SMZ and SMM were 27.35 mg/g and 30.92 mg/g, respectively. The detection limits of the method in three environmental water samples were in the range of 0.23–1.74 μg/L, and the recoveries were between 82.7 and 110.3%, with relative standard deviations less than 5.93%. The construction process of this MIPs-DSPE-HPLC method is straightforward, exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity, and thus provides a versatile method for the quantification of SAs in complex matrices.

Abstract:This research, described ultrasound-assisted dispersive magnetic solid-phase microextraction, which is efficient for the enrichment and determination of sulfamethoxazole, based on magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (USA-DMSPME-MIP). Meanwhile, the initial characterization of Fe 3 O 4 -MIP was completed by conventional methods and well-known protocols to obtain recognition and adsorbing performance at pre-specified optimum conditions. Fe 3 O 4 -MIP exhibited information regarding its selective recognition pattern towards sulfamethoxazole. The USA-DMSPME-MIP parameters were optimized by response surface methodology, and based on optimum conditions, this efficient method for the extraction and enrichment of sulfamethoxazole from spiked water samples and quantification by HPLC-UV was used. The enhanced technique indicates the limit of detection is 2 ng mL −1 for sulfamethoxazole, along with excellent linear range with coefficients of determination >0.99 and good recoveries for spiked water samples (94.2 and 98.2%) with RSDs less than 3.5%.

Abstract:Based on multiple ligands strategy, a series of multivariate metal organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs) named as PCN-224-DCDPSx were prepared using one-pot solvothermal method to extract and remove sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). The pore structure and adsorption performance can be further regulated by modulating the doping ratios of medium-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl) porphyrin and 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenyl sulfones. The MTV-MOFs of PCN-224-DCDPS1.0 possesses very large specific surface area (1625 m2/g). Using PCN-224-DCDPS1.0 as sorbent, a dispersive solid-phase extraction method was developed to extract and preconcentrate SAs from water, eggs, and milk prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis. The limits of detection of method were determined between 0.17 and 0.27 ng/mL with enrichment factors ranging 214-327. The adsorption can be finished within 30 s, and the recovery rate remains above 80 % after 10 repeated uses. The adsorption capacities of sorbent were determined from 300 to 621 mg/g for sulfadiazine, sulphapyridine, sulfamethoxydiazine, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfabenzamide, and sulfadimethoxine. The adsorption mechanisms were investigated and can be attributed to π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions. This work represents a method for preparation of MTV-MOFs and uses as sorbent for extraction and enrichment of trace pollutants from complex samples.

Abstract:We have described a sulfonamide-selective ambient ion source coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) for selective extraction and determination of trace sulfonamide antibiotics. It is obtained by modifying an iron sheet with a sulfadiazine-templated hydrophilic molecularly imprinted polymer (SF-HMIP). It behaves as both an online extractor and a MS ion source. Five sulfonamide antibiotics, including sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfisoxazole (SIZ), sulfathiazole (ST), and sulfameter (SMD), were chosen to evaluate SF-HMIP coupled with ESI-MS, which showed good linearity in the range of 0.2-1000 ng/mL with correlation coefficient values (R2) over 0.9946. The limits of detection (LODs) for analysis of pure water and honey were in the range of 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-1.5 ng/mL, respectively. Limits of quantitation (LOQs) for analysis of pure water and honey were in the range of 0.3-0.5 and 1.0-5.0 ng/mL, respectively. The results demonstrated that SF-HMIP combined with ESI-MS could be applied for the direct analysis of five trace sulfonamide compounds in honey and pure water with recoveries ranging from 76 to 129%.

Abstract:A twin enrichment method based on offline dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) coupled with online field-amplified sample injection (FASI) was developed for the simultaneous determination of four sulfonamide (SA) antibiotics, including sulfamethazine (SMZ), sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfadizine (SDZ) and sulfacetamide (SFA), in different environmental waters, followed by capillary electrophoresis (CE). Various parameters that affected the separation performance of CE and the enrichment efficiencies of DLLME and FASI were optimized in detail, and excellent CE separation was attained within 6 min. The DLLME-FASI-CE offered high sensitivity enrichment factors of 206, 166, 185 and 150 for SMZ, SMR, SDZ and SFA, respectively. Highly sensitive detection was realized with low limits of detection (LODs), which ranged from 2.0-23.0, 2.2-26.0 and 4.3-63.0 ng mL-1 in tap water, lake water and seawater, respectively, as well as limits of quantification (LOQs) within 6.0-63.0, 7.4-96.0 and 14.0-201.0 ng mL-1, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries in the range of 91-108% were obtained with the three spiked environmental water samples, and the relative standard deviations were from 1.09-7.45%. The simple effective twin enrichment method provided promising perspective for CE determination of SAs in complicated aqueous matrices, with rapidity, sensitivity, and accuracy.

Abstract:A mesoporous silica Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15) has been first functionalized with 3-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane (a silane with three amines) and then reacted with an excess of phenyl glycidyl ether to generate a mixed-mode anion-exchanger containing both anion-exchange (three amines) and reversed-phase (multiple ether-linked phenyls) functionalities in a single branched ligand. The resulting material has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The results obtained indicated a BET specific surface area (SBET) of 362.5m2g-1, a pore volume of 0.70cm3g-1 with a narrow pore size distribution centered at 6.6nm, and carbon and nitrogen contents of 28.30% and 2.84%, respectively. The dimensions of these particles (∼5μm diameter, ∼60μm length), their large surface areas, their high-density functionalities and anion-exchange mixed-mode characteristics make them very attractive for highly effective solid phase extraction (SPE) of acidic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The important parameters on extraction efficiency including sample pH, breakthrough volume, type and volume of eluent were optimized. A simple and sensitive analytical method based on mixed-mode SPE coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was developed and successfully applied to the analysis of four NSAIDs (ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen) in spiked real water samples with satisfactory recoveries (80.6-110.9%) and repeatability (relative standard deviation <11.3%, n=3). The limit of detections of four NSAIDs were 0.006-0.070μgL-1 for tap water, and 0.014-0.16μgL-1 for river water and wastewater, with the enrichment factors of 806-1109-fold.

Abstract:Consuming foods with excess sulfonamide residues threatens human health, underscoring the importance of their detection in food. This study presents an innovative one-pot derivatization/magnetic solid-phase extraction (OPD/MSPE) method for sulfonamides analysis. This approach integrates the derivatization and extraction steps into a single process. The sample solution, along with the derivatization reagent fluorescamine and the sorbent magnetic hydroxyl multi-walled carbon nanotubes, is mixed and vortexed for 3 min. This procedure simultaneously conducts derivatization and extraction, with easy phase separation using an external magnet. This streamlined sample preparation method is completed in only 5 min and, when combined with liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (LC-FLD), demonstrates excellent linearity (R2 > 0.99) and satisfactory detection limits (0.004-0.04 ng/g) for the quantification of nine sulfonamides in honey samples. The proposed OPD/MSPE-LC-FLD method is distinguished by its simplicity, rapidity, high sensitivity, and specificity, making it an outstanding advancement in the field of food safety analysis.
Simultaneous Determination of Sulfonamides and Metabolites in Manure Samples by One-Step Ultrasound/microwave-Assisted Solid–liquid–solid Dispersive Extraction and Liquid Chromatography–mass Spectrometry

Abstract:An in-line matrix cleanup method was used for the simultaneous extraction of 15 sulfonamides and two metabolites from manure samples. The ultrasound/microwave-assisted extraction (UMAE) combined with solid–liquid–solid dispersive extraction (SLSDE) procedure provides a simple sample preparation approach for the processing of manure samples, in which the extraction and cleanup are integrated into one step. Ultrasonic irradiation power, extraction temperature, extraction time, and extraction solvent, which could influence the UMAE efficiency, were investigated. C18 was used as the adsorbent to reduce the effects of interfering components during the extraction procedure. The extracts were concentrated, and the analytes were analyzed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) without any further cleanup. The isotopically labeled compounds sulfamethoxazole-d 4, sulfamethazine-d 4, sulfamonomethoxine-d 4, and sulfadimethoxine-d 6 were selected as internal standards to minimize the matrix effect in this method. The recoveries of the antibiotics tested ranged from 71 to 118 % at the three spiking levels examined (20, 200, and 500 μg · kg-1). The limits of detections were 1.2–3.6 μg · kg-1 and the limits of quantification were 4.0–12.3 μg · kg-1 for the sulfonamides and their metabolites. The applicability of the method was demonstrated by analyzing 30 commercial manure samples. The results indicated that UMAE–SLSDE combined with LC–MS/MS is a simple, rapid, and environmentally friendly method for the analysis of sulfonamides and their metabolites in manure, and it could provide the basis for a risk assessment of the antibiotics in agricultural environments.
Green application of surfactant modified silica as effective sorbent for extraction and preconcentration of sulfonamide residues in environmental water and honey samples

Abstract:Micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) using surfactant coated silica for extraction and preconcentration of sulfonamide residues at trace levels in environmental water and honey samples prior their analysis by high performance liquid chronatography coupled with photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA). The sample solution were dispersed in a small amounts of solid sorbent by vacuum manifold for sample preparation, and extraction occurred by adsorption in a short time. Finally, the analytes were subsequently desorbed using an appropriate solvent. The pure and coated silica were physicochemically and morphologically characterized by nittrogen (N 2 ) sorptions analyses, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Parameters influencing extraction efficiency, such as amount of sorbent, kind, concentration and volume of surfactant, and kind and volume of desorption solvent, were investigated. The optimum conditions of the proposed method, were mixed standard/sample solution (10 mL), 0.4 g silica, 0.03 M CTAB (150 μL), and 500 μL methanol (as elution solvent). The proposed method, under optimal conditions, showed excellent linearity in different ranges (9–300 μg L −1 , the a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) of greater than 0.99), good repeatability (RSD < 6.72%), good sensitivity (LODs in the range of 1 to 3 μg L −1 ), high enrichment factor (5.63–13.33), and acceptable relative recoveries (61.0–121.4%). The developed μ-SPE method was applied to analyze sulfonamide residues in water and honey samples with relative recoveries of 60.9–119.4% were obtained. This alternative method is simple and is also environmentally friendly which assessed using Analytical Eco-scale and Analytical GREEnness metric (AGREE).

Abstract:In this study, surface imprinted particles were synthesized by precipitation polymerization using silica microspheres as carrier for adsorbing sulphamethoxazole (SMO) from aqueous media. Different functional monomers (4-vinylpyridine, acrylamide and methacrylic acid) and different cross-linkers (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide) were selected to synthesize different kinds of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and their corresponding non-imprinted polymers. The MIP with the best adsorption performance in aqueous media was identified by adsorption experiments. Various kinds of kinetic models and isotherm models were fitted, and the kinetic and isotherm properties of MIPs in selective adsorption were studied and analyzed in depth. Advanced characterization methods were applied to demonstrate the successful preparation of the imprinted materials, and expound their physical and chemical properties. In addition, the concentration of SMO in aqueous media was determined by solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography.
Disposable MoS 2 -Arrayed MALDI MS Chip for High-Throughput and Rapid Quantification of Sulfonamides in Multiple Real Samples.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate, for the first time, the development of a disposable MoS-arrayed matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) chip combined with an immunoaffinity enrichment method for high-throughput, rapid, and simultaneous quantitation of multiple sulfonamides (SAs). The disposable MALDI MS chip was designed and fabricated by MoS array formation on a commercial indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slide. A series of SAs were analysed, and clear deprotonated signals were obtained in negative-ion mode. Compared with MoS-arrayed commercial steel plate, the prepared MALDI MS chip exhibited comparable LDI efficiency, providing a good alternative and disposable substrate for MALDI MS analysis. Furthermore, internal standard (IS) was previously deposited onto the MoS array to simplify the experimental process for MALDI MS quantitation. 96 sample spots could be analysed within 10 min in one single chip to perform quantitative analysis, recovery studies, and real foodstuffs detection. Upon targeted extraction and enrichment by antibody conjugated magnetic beads, five SAs were quantitatively determined by the IS-first method with the linear range of 0.5-10 ng/mL (R >0.990). Good recoveries and repeatability were obtained for spiked pork, egg, and milk samples. SAs in several real foodstuffs were successfully identified and quantified. The developed method may provide a promising tool for the routine analysis of antibiotic residues in real samples.
Student Nurses' Perceptions of a Good Mentor: A Questionnaire Survey of Student Nurses in the UK, USA and Jordan

Abstract:Aims and Objectives: In 1995, students in the UK identified five characteristics of a good mentor. After 14 years, the author repeated the study to investigate whether students still identify the same characteristics of a good mentor. Design: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Methods: The study was conducted in the UK, USA and Jordan to validate the previous study in countries with different cultures and different mentorship systems. After ethical approval was granted, a structured questionnaire was distributed to a convenience sample of nursing students from one university in each country. Results: A total of 336 students participated in the study: 38.7% from the UK, 10.7% from the USA and 50.6% from Jordan. Comparing the mean and median scores for each of the five qualities for the three countries, the highest means and medians were for the quality “has relevant knowledge and skills”. For the four other qualities, there were similarities between UK and the USA, while the Jordanian nursing students had different mean and median scores.

Abstract:Efficient extractions of trace antibiotic residues in the environment are a key factor for accurate quantification of the residues. A new nanoporous material, namely, magnetically covalent organic polymer (MCOP, Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-COP) was synthesized in this work and was used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The combination of MSPE with high-performance liquid chromatography separation together with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was established as an effective method for the determination of four sulfonamide (SA) residues in surface water surrounding a cattle farm. The synthesized magnetic material was characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, magnetic properties measurement system (MPMS), and nitrogen gas porosimetry. The material possessed many attractive features, such as a unique microporous structure, a larger specific surface area (137.93 m2·g−1) than bare Fe3O4 (24.84 m2·g−1), high saturation magnetization (50.5 emu·g−1), open adsorption sites, and high stability. The influencing parameters, including pH, the used amount of MCOPs, the type of eluent, adsorption solution, and desorption time, were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the method conferred good linearity ranges (R2 ≥ 0.9990), low detection limits (S/N = 3, LOD, 0.10–0.25 μg·L−1), and satisfactory recoveries (79.7% to 92.2%). The enrichment factor (EF) for the four SAs was 34.13–38.86. The relative standard deviations of intraday (n = 5) and of interday (n = 3) were less than 4.8% and 8.9%, respectively. The equilibria between extraction and desorption for SAs could be reached within 150 s. The proposed method was sensitive and convenient for detecting SA residues in complex environmental matrices, and the successful application of the new MCOPs as an adsorbent was demonstrated.

Abstract:Sulfonamides, the most frequent antibacterial agent, are widely used due to their low cost and excellent antibacterial effect. With the emergence of the environment, the potential hazard to the ecological environment has attracted the great attention of humans. Based on matrix solid‐phase dispersion coupled with high‐performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry, an accurate, fast, and sensitive analytical method was developed for the determination of sulfonamides (SAs) in soil. Several influencing factors including the type of dispersants, the ratio of sample‐to‐sorbent, eluents, and solvent volume were investigated, and the matrix effects were evaluated. Under optimized conditions, the calibration curves exhibited excellent linearity with correlation coefficients (r) exceeding 0.996. The limit of detection (based on signal‐to‐noise ratio [S/N] = 3) and limit of quantification (based on S/N = 10) were 0.024–0.058 and 0.079–0.195 μg/kg, respectively. The recoveries ranging from 70.12% to 123.63% were obtained with a relative standard deviation of less than 15% at three levels (20, 40, and 200 μg/kg). The developed method was successfully applied to analyze 13 SAs at trace levels in a real soil sample. This proposed method would be an alternative and suitable for routine application in the future owing to its rapidity, sensitivity, and affordability.

Abstract:In this work, the effect of a carrier modified with a carbon-carbon double bond (C=C) on preparing multi-templates surface molecularly imprinted polymer MIP (C=C@MIP) for simultaneous detection of sulfonamides and quinolones was investigated. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of the C=C@MIP were obviously higher than those of MIP, which is the carrier without modified C=C, suggesting that C=C played a key role in preparing MIP with higher adsorption capacities. Then, C=C@MIP was used as adsorbents for solid-phase extraction (SPE) and coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the simultaneous determination of sulfonamides and quinolones in water. The method showed excellent applicability, with the adsorption capacities of 19.92, 16.38, 12.92, 18.37, 14.49, 12.01, 16.98, 23.33, and 14.29 mg/g for SDZ, STZ, SMZ, SMX, SDM, ENRO, OFL, LOME, and GATI, respectively. The spiked recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of sulfonamides and quinolones using C=C@MIP were 81.59–100.7 % and 3.75–7.37 %, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) for SDZ, STZ, SMZ, SMX, SDM, ENRO, OFL, LOME, and GATI were 0.013, 0.012, 0.012, 0.013, 0.014, 0.012, 0.013, 0.015, and 0.015 μg/L, respectively.

Abstract:In this work, melamine/o-phthalaldehyde covalent organic framework was used as a novel trapping media in solid-phase extraction of sulfonamides at ultra-trace levels in real water samples. Six sulfonamides, including sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfathiazole (ST), sulfapyridine (SPD), sulfamethyldiazine (SM1), sulfamethazine (SM2), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), were absorbed on the SPE cartridge. Important factors affecting extraction effect were optimized by single factor optimization method, and the optimized relevant parameters were as follows:eluent and its volume, 8 mL MA; sample flow rate, 3 mL/min; sample pH, pH=4 and sample volume, 200 mL. Sulfonamide antibiotics were detected and quantified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Low limits of detection (0.05-0.36 ng/L), wide linearity range (0.25-1000 ng/L), good repeatability and high recovery (82.5%-104.8%) for sulfonamides were obtained under the optimized conditions. The optimized method was used in the analysis of sulfonamides in real environmental water samples (drinking water, tap water and pool water) successfully. The novel COFs as a solid phase trapping material was a good choice for the rapid and effective analysis of sulfonamides at ultra trace levels in environmental water samples.
Trace-level detection of sulfonamide antibiotics using quaternary ammonium polymeric ionic liquid-based effervescence-enhanced dispersive solid-phase extraction followed by LC-DAD analysis in environmental waters

Abstract:Conventional ionic liquids possess several disadvantages, such as high viscosity, difficult sampling/retrieval, and great loss in aqueous solution, limiting their wide applications in the pretreatment field. To solve these drawbacks, we synthesized a quaternary ammonium polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) and pressed it into an effervescent tablet for developing an effervescence-enhanced dispersive solid-phase extraction method (QAP-EDSE). The pressed effervescent tablet was composed of PIL as an extractant, tartaric acid as an acidic source, NaHCO 3 as an alkaline source, and water-soluble starch as a filler, respectively. Under the CO 2 -driven dispersion, the QAP-EDSE method integrated rapid enrichment, extraction, and dispersion into one synchronous step. Employing the one-factor-at-a-time approach, several important variables were optimized as follows: 200 mg of P[VBTHEA]Cl as sorbent, 400 μL of acetone as elution solvent, 5 min of elution, solution pH 9.0, and 1 : 1.25 molar ratio of alkaline to acidic sources. Combining LC-DAD analysis, this proposed approach offered the limits of detection as low as 0.11–0.31 μg L −1 and satisfactory recoveries of 81.40–102.62% for five sulfonamides (SAs) in environmental waters. The lower relative standard deviations (1.9–6.7%) evidenced the higher intraday and interday experimental precision by this method. Overall, the newly developed method is environmentally benign, time-saving, and easy to operate with low detection limit and high recovery and thus shows excellent prospects in the trace-level detection of SAs in environmental waters.

Abstract:The large-scale use of sulfonamide antimicrobials in human and veterinary medicine has seriously endangered the ecological environment and human health. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a simple and robust method for the simultaneous determination of seventeen sulfonamides in water using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry coupled with fully automated solid-phase extraction. Seventeen isotope-labeled internal standards for sulfonamides were used to correct matrix effects. Several parameters affecting extraction efficiency were systematically optimized, and the enrichment factors were up to 982−1033 and only requiring about 60 min per six samples. Under the optimized conditions, this method manifested good linearity (0.05–100 μg/L), high sensitivity (detection limits: 0.01–0.05 ng/L), and satisfactory recoveries (79–118%) with acceptable relative standard deviations (0.3–14.5%, n = 5). The developed method can be successfully utilized for the determination of 17 sulfonamides in pure water, tap water, river water, and seawater. In total, six and seven sulfonamides were detected in river water and seawater, respectively, with a total concentration of 8.157–29.676 ng/L and 1.683–36.955 ng/L, respectively, and sulfamethoxazole was the predominant congener.
