Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.

Abstract:In this paper, we developed a portable laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) using an optical fiber to deliver laser energy and used it to quantitatively analyze minor elements in steel. The R-2 factors of calibration curves of elements Mn, Ti, V, and Cr in pig iron were 0.9965, 0.9983, 0.9963, and 0.991, respectively, and their root mean square errors of cross-validation were 0.0501, 0.0054, 0.0205, and 0.0245 wt%, respectively. Six test samples were used for the validation of the performance of the calibration curves established by the portable LIBS. The average relative errors of elements Mn, Ti, V, and Cr were 2.5%, 11.7%, 13.0%, and 5.6%, respectively. These results were comparable with most results reported in traditional LIBS in steel or other matrices. However, the portable LIBS is flexible, compact, and robust, providing a promising prospect in industrial application.

Abstract:The Si and Mn contents in steel alloys are important characteristic indexes that influence the plasticity and welding properties of these alloys. In this work, the quantitative analysis methods for trace elements under complex alloy matrices by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) are studied, which provide a foundation for utilizing LIBS technology in the rapid online detection of steel alloy properties. To improve the quantitative analysis accuracy of LIBS, deep learning algorithm methods are introduced. Given the characteristics of LIBS spectra, we explore multi-perspective feature extraction and backward differential methods to extract the spatio-temporal characteristics of LIBS spectra. The Text Convolutional Neural Network (TextCNN) model, combined with multi-perspective feature extraction, displays good stability and lower average relative errors (6.988% for Si, 6.280% for Mn) in the test set compared to the traditional quantitative analysis method and deep neural network (DNN) model. Finally, the backward differential method is employed to optimize the two-dimensional LIBS spectral input matrix, and the results indicate that the average relative errors of Si and Mn elements in the test set decrease to 5.139% and 3.939%, respectively. The method proposed in this work establishes a theoretical basis and technical support for precise prediction and online quality monitoring.

Abstract:The determination accuracy of alloying elements in high alloy steel is generally poor in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) due to their matrix effect. To solve this problem, an image quantitative analysis (IQA) method was proposed and verified by determining nickel (Ni) in 17 stainless steel samples in this work. The results showed that the coefficient of determination (R2) was increased from 0.9833 of a conventional spectrum quantitative analysis (SQA) method to 0.9996 of the IQA method, and the average relative error of cross-validation (ARECV) and root mean squared error of cross-validation (RMSECV) were decreased from 56.80% and 1.0818 wt% to 15.93% and 0.9866 wt%, respectively. Besides, the determinations of chromium (Cr) and silicon (Si) demonstrated the generalization ability of the IQA. This study provides an effective approach to improving the quantitative performance of LIBS through the combination of image processing and computer vision technology.

Abstract:Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy is an emerging elemental analytical technique with the advantage of fast response, minimal sample preparation and multi-element analysis capacities. This work studied practical use of LIBS for rapid quantification of 4 (Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb) heavy metal elements in 169 agricultural soil samples. The objective is to conclude an appropriate method to reduce the interference of matrix effect in soils within the scope of data analysis, by comparing several univariate and multivariate methods of LIBS data interpretation (full spectrum and emission lines). The proposed multivariate methods, such as the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and principal components regression were found to be effective in reducing the matrix interference and the predictive performance was stable in our experiment, approaching normalized root mean squared error of 6.84%, 8.87%, 9,71%, 10.76% for Cu, Ni, Cr and Pb, respectively. Meanwhile, the performance of univariate analysis suffered from such effect. The results showed the importance of utilizing proper multivariate chemometrics for LIBS data interpretation when quantifying the heavy metals in soils.

Abstract:Spectral interference and self-absorption seriously affect the accuracy of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, we used LIBS assisted with laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) to solve these problems. Taking nickel (Ni) in the alloy structural steel as an example, the results show that the spectral interference of Ni lines was eliminated, the self-absorption factor of the Ni I 341.47 nm line was reduced by 85%, and the average relative error for determination of Ni element was reduced by 83% using LSA-LIBS. The results indicate that spectral interference and self-absorption can be reduced simultaneously in LSA-LIBS.

Abstract:The existence of the background signal is one of the factors leading to the uncertainty of spectral intensity, which dramatically affects the stability, repeatability, and quantitative accuracy of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurements. In this work, the polarization-resolved LIBS (PR-LIBS) and partial least squares (PLS) regression models were proposed to improve the stability and accuracy of qualitative and quantitative analysis of steel alloy elements. The obtained spectra were pre-processed to select an appropriate number of variables, and the relationship between the spectral intensity and the certified concentration information of steel alloy samples was modeled using PLS. Compared to LIBS measurements, the relative standard deviation (RSD) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of PR-LIBS decreased, while the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) and coefficient of determination (R2) increased. Finally, the quantitative results of LIBS and PR-LIBS of Si, Mn, Cr, and Ni in steel alloy samples using PLS were displayed and discussed. For the PR-LIBS dataset, the R2 has increased by at least 3.4%, and the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) have improved by at least 6.3% and 19.0%, respectively. These findings coupled with the simplicity of the experimental process indicate that PR-LIBS is a simple and low-cost solution that can increase the stability and accuracy of LIBS measurements.

Abstract:In the field of quantitative analysis utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), ensuring the stability and precision of the technique is a crucial consideration. This is particularly pertinent for certain engineering applications, where utilizing electric translation stages for sample scanning is not feasible. In this study, a compact optical scanning LIBS analysis system was developed using a deflection mirror design to replace the translation platform. The system achieved rapid scanning and precise analysis, with a total weight of less than 5 kg. Moreover, to quantitatively analyze Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, and other elements in various alloy steels, a general method for selecting spectral analysis line combination was proposed. The calibration model was established utilizing 16 alloy steel samples, and its validity was assessed through a verification set of seven samples (with element content ranging from 0.021 to 2.0 wt%). The results indicate a high degree of accuracy. The calibration model determination coefficients ( ) for Mn, Ni, Cr, and Cu elements exceeded 0.99. The root-mean-square error of validation (RMSEV) was less than 0.05, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was not more than 4%. Additionally, the relative prediction errors for Mn range from 2.98% to 67.44%, for Ni range from 0.57% to 15.93%, for Cr range from 3.91% to 55.56%, and for Cu range from 0.95% to 38.1%.

Abstract:In this work, a genetic algorithm (GA) was employed to select the intensity ratios of the spectral lines belonging to the target and domain matrix elements, then these selected line-intensity ratios were taken as inputs to construct an analysis model based on an artificial neural network (ANN) to analyze the elements copper (Cu) and vanadium (V) in steel samples. The results revealed that the root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEPs) for the elements Cu and V can reach 0.0040 wt. % and 0.0039 wt. %, respectively. Compared to 0.0190 wt. % and 0.0201 wt. % of the conventional internal calibration approach, the reduction rates of the RMSEP values reached 78.9% and 80.6%, respectively. These results indicate that the GA combining ANN can excellently execute the quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for steel samples and further improve analytical accuracy.

Abstract:Although histologic heterogeneity of lung cancer is well recognized, little information is avilable related to possible effects of this heterogeneity on prognosis. We collected 100 consecutive lung cancer cases, including 35 autopsies and 65 surgical resections, which were extensively sampled (average, ten blocks per case) and analyzed for histologic heterogeneity. Slides were randomized and classified by five pathologists using the 1981 World Health Organization (WHO) classification scheme. Five‐year follow‐up data were obtained for the surgical cases, and detailed information on staging and survival from time of diagnosis was available in 91 cases. Survival time was analyzed with respect to the patient's age, sex, stage, predominant histologic pattern, and presence or absence of major heterogeneity. The latter is defined as the presence on at least one slide of a major histologic pattern different from that of the remaining slides for that case. The only statistically significant predictor of survival was tumor stage (P < 0.0001). Heterogeneous tumors appeared to have a worse survival, but this did not reach statistical significance. There was no relationship between survival and predominant histologic pattern (cell type), sex, or age.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, a laser-induced breakdown spectrometer (LIBS) combined with machine learning has been widely developed for steel classification. However, the much redundant information of LIBS spectra increases the computation complexity for classification. In this work, restricted Boltzmann machines (RBM) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used for dimension reduction of datasets, respectively. Then, a support vector machine (SVM) was adopted to process feature information. Two models (RBM-SVM and PCA-SVM) are compared in terms of performance. After optimization, the accuracy of the RBM-SVM model can achieve 100%, and the maximum dimension reduction time is 33.18 s, which is nearly half of that of the PCA model (53.19 s). These results preliminarily indicate that LIBS combined with RBM-SVM has great potential in the real-time classification of steel.

Abstract:In this work, use of a low pulse energy and high repetition rate diode pumped solid state laser has been investigated for trigger-free laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) based quantitative analysis of commonly used steel grades. Due to the low pulse energy of 2 mJ, signal was accumulated over large number of pulses to have good signal quality and was acquired in a free-running mode i.e. without any triggering. Thuough, the trigger-free signal acquisition lacked continuum suppression capability, weak plasma events caused by the low pulse energy did not produce significant continuum and hence continuum suppression was not an issue. Further, the 2 kHz repetition rate of laser required that the sample be continuously scanned to avoid signal decay as a result of formation of excessively deep craters. As scanning could introduce additional signal fluctuations therefore, a combination of sample scanning velocity and pulse energy which led to least signal fluctuations, was used to acquire LIBS spectra from steel samples. Of the total 19 samples, 15 steel samples were used to train random forest regression models for quantitative analysis of various elements including C, Si, Mn, Cr, Ni, Mo, Cu and Co. Remaining 4 samples were used for testing/validating the models. It was observed that as compared to the full spectral range of ~ 185 nm - 545 nm, a smaller and information rich spectral range of ~185 nm - 310 nm produced better results. With the selected spectral range, the relative mean error (RME) ranged from 1.4% to 15.77 %, with lower values belonging to major elements and higher values to minor elements. The root mean square error (RMSE) values were found to range from 0.014 wt.% for C to 0.26 wt.% for Ni. The R2 values, which indicated correlation between predicted and reference concentrations, were found to be > 96% for all the elements except Si and Cu. These results suggested that a trigger-free LIBS based on a low pulse energy, high repetition rate laser and a single channel spectrometer covering a narrow spectral range, in combination with machine learning techniques is suitable for quantitative analysis of steel elements.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has emerged as a promising technique for both quantitative and qualitative analysis of elements in a wide variety of samples. However, conventional LIBS suffers from a high limit of detection (LoD) compared with other analytical techniques. This review briefly discusses several methods that demonstrate the applicability and prospects for trace element detection while lowering the LoD when coupled with LIBS. This review compares the enhancement mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of these techniques. Finally, the recent development and application of LIBS coupled techniques for trace element detection are also discussed for various samples such as metal alloys, biomaterials, rare earth elements, explosives, drinking water, and water bodies.

Abstract:The content of chromium (Cr) affects the mechanical and wear resistance of steel. Hence, the determination of Cr in steel is of great significance to determine the quality. In this study, a new method based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with extreme random tree (ERT) is reported to determine Cr in steel. First, the Cr I 425.43 nm line was selected for univariate quantitative analysis. Next, multivariate analysis of Cr was performed using partial least squares regression (PLSR), random forest (RF), and ERT. The abilities of the models for the determination were validated by the fitting coefficient ( R 2 ), root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC), root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), and average relative error (ARE). The R 2 , RMSEC, RMSEP, and ARE values of ERT were 0.9984, 0.0274 wt.%, 0.0299 wt.%, and 2.43%, respectively. Compared with the univariate model, PLSR, and RF models, the R 2 of ERT increased by 0.1317, 0.0306, and 0.013, respectively; RMSEC decreased by 0.0987, 0.0955, and 0.0174 wt.%; RMSEP decreased by 0.1463, 0.0876, and 0.002 wt.%; and ARE decreased by 17.88%, 16.98%, and 5.95%, respectively. The results show that combining LIBS with the ERT model for multivariate analysis improves the elemental analysis of steel.

Standardless Semi-quantitative Elemental Analysis of Steel Using Laser Ablation Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:A small high irradiance laser ablation and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer with orthogonal sample introduction was described. Nearly uniform relative sensitivity coefficients as well as satisfactory resolving power(similar to 2200) were achieved for most if metal elements. Fairly good signal stability was obtained by automated step moving of the sample stage in short time intervals. Interferences of multiply charged ions and polyatomic ions were nearly eliminated in the spectrum by utilizing helium as the buffer gas in the ion source, which resulted In a relative clean background. Standardless semi-quantitative analysis of steel was realized and the limits of detection are about 10(-6) g/g for most of metal elements.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser-ablation spark-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LA-SIBS) and out-of-bag random forest regression (OOB-RFR) were developed for accurate quantitative analysis of the elements manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni) in steel alloys. A femtosecond laser operating at 1 kHZ was used as the laser ablation source and a spark discharge unit was utilized to enhance the peak intensity of atomic emission. The characteristic lines of Mn, Cr, and Ni elements in steel alloys were determined using the NIST database. The two hyperparameters n tree and m try of RFR were optimized through OOB error, and the OOB-RFR model was obtained. In the experiment, the predictive performance of OOB-RFR, support vector machine (SVM) regression, and partial least squares regression (PLS) on steel alloy spectral data was compared and analyzed. The results indicate that the OOB-RFR model exhibits lower computational iterations and higher performance than other models in regression prediction of Mn, Cr, and Ni elements. In the OOB-RFR model, the root mean square error (RMSE), the average relative error (MRE) and the coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) of Mn, Cr, and Ni elements in the training samples were 0.0051, 0.0018 and 0.9976, respectively, and the RMSE, MRE and R 2 of the three elements in testing samples were 0.0018, 0.0009 and 0.9369, respectively. Therefore, the combination of the fs-LA-SIBS technique and OOB-RFR has great potential in the rapid determination of elements in steel and even in the metallurgical field.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising method for the rapid determination of compositions of stainless steels in steel scrap. LIBS is widely known as a method for very rapid elemental analysis in open-air without any pretreatment. We applied a laboratory-build LIBS system for mutual identification of 5 types of austenitic stainless steels, SUS304, SUS310, SUS316, SUS321, and SUS347. The certified reference materials of JSM M 200 were employed for establishing supervised models, conducting partial-least-square regression (PLSR) for the determination of Cr, Ni, Mo, Ti, and Nb. Since it needed more than 10 minutes of calculation time when all the wavelength range were utilized for PLS2 regression, suitable emission lines in the determination were picked up for the reduction of calculation amount and time. When we select single emission lines having higher excitation levels to avoid an affection by self-absorption, the good determination results for Cr, Ni, Mo, and Nb could be obtained with reasonable accuracy and precision by the calculation with PLS1 regression.
